Pretty good work here… the DNR and sharpening is VERY apparent in some scenes from the retail 4k release. On the last comparison screenshot, I noticed your upscale has a strange horizontal band that runs across Kong’s forehead. Is that an artifact from the 1080p source?

Thanks, it is in its final stage. Now we’ll have a pretty decent master to watch this masterpiece. Talking about the last screenshot, I don’t see what you’re talking about. Can you zoom in and share the example, please ? What I’m seeing near his forehead is the line of his shoulder. The bluray encode was indeed a great encode and shouldn’t have many artifacts.

I’m referring to the screenshot above the words “I’m also looking forward to a clean open matte version of the theatrical cut or the extended cut to create a hybrid open matte / scope release. If someone here has it, just let me know. The only “good” open matte I found is ripped from Starz and is watermarked with their logo on several scenes.”

There’s a little band that runs horizontally across the top of the frame. You can also see it somewhat running along the left side of the frame as well and a tiny bit on the right.

Now I see the horizontal band. It is unfortunately part of the 1080p master, don’t know where this is coming from.

Thanks for the insights regarding the Open Matte version. I think it would be too much work to put out a hybrid version, then.

Harry Potter Saga in 4K Hybrid Open Matte/Scope - Theatrical Cuts
Time

Thanks to nightstalkerpoet, a new version of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone 4K Filmized Open Matte is in the works. The main goal is to get rid of the macroblocking and banding (especially on night scenes), using a much better 1080p encode of the open matte version. Both THEATRICAL and EXTENDED cuts will get a V2 in the upcoming days.

On the side of the latter films, I’ve watched the whole saga in that format and I have some export issues with HP 7-8 that need to be fixed before it gets available. It is mainly frame drops between the Scope and the Open Matte switch, so it won’t take much time. Thanks for your patience.

EDIT 01.12.25

The 4K Filmized Hybrid Open Matte / Scope Remaster is also available.

EDIT : Hi, anyone needing an easier way to get the 4K Filmized Remaster can now PM me. All released 4K Filmized Remasters are upcoming as well. Thanks for your patience.

Hello there !

Upcoming in the 4K Filmized Remaster series, here is the extended cut of Peter Jackson’s King Kong remake, freshly restored from the untouched original bluray with my restoration process.

As a big Peter Jackson fan, I always felt disappointed with the Ultra HD Bluray remaster. The new yellow color grading and over lightened/sharpened image always felt kinda off to me. I decided to start the remastering process from the original bluray and applied further color grading to get rid of the yellow tint. Screenshots comparison might help you to understand what I’m talking about.

I’m also looking forward to a clean open matte version of the theatrical cut or the extended cut to create a hybrid open matte / scope release. If someone here has it, just let me know. The only “good” open matte I found is ripped from Starz and is watermarked with their logo on several scenes.

The final release will include untouched audio from the official 4K Ultra HD Bluray in English and Truefrench.

Stay tuned.

How does one get the links and was this exported with 35mm film stock - curious about the process

Sent you a PM. For the process, untouched bluray image and audio are used as reference, then upscaled in 4K using my best Topaz Video AI settings, and then re-exported with an extra grain layer of 35mm film stock (and in this case, Super 35mm film stock grain since there seems to be an Open Matte 35mm film scan available here).

Curious what your Topaz settings were for this one? Looks quite good from the stills. The increase in detail is maybe on the subtler side, but I don’t see many artifacts.

Still need to download your Titanic upscale. Looking forward to seeing how that looks.

Episode I is almost finished and Episode II is on the way. Will add more screenshots of the final render soon.

How is everyone watching this? I’ve tried in VLC on Windows and Xbox, Movies and TV app on Xbox, and Media Player Classic and VirtualDub2 on Windows, and I’m getting a lot of banding in the opening of Sorcerer’s Stone, most visible when Dumbledore lifts up the put-outer and it’s the only thing in the shot.
My TV is LCD 1080p, my computer screen is LED 3200x1800. Is this only visible from downscaling or on an SDR screen, or is anyone else seeing this too?

You need to read details of every released movie in the theatrical cuts thread. Later movies are not impacted by this problem.

Sorcerer’s Stone (Released)

Completely Open Matte
A few shots were zoomed in but offered more image on top and bottom, so I decided to keep them in
Bluray image is used for Warner logos and credits.
Note: there is still macroblocking and banding during selected sequences.
It is part of the open matte image master and has been altered as much as possible. But it might still be visible, especially on the opening scene (which was also horrible on the original bluray master)

Chamber of Secrets (Released)

Completely Open Matte
A few shots were zoomed in but offered more image on top and bottom, so I decided to keep them in
Bluray image is used for Warner logos and credits.
Note: It is part of the open matte image master and has been altered as much as possible. But it might still be visible.

I’m curious why you would upscale the Blu-Rays instead of simply using the existing 4K transfer that’s already on disc. Seems like you’re just making more work for yourself that way.

The answer is simple : the final original masters for Episode I - II - III will always be 1080p. And everything released from that point that is and considered “superior” to the 1080p versions will always be an upscale. Even the officially released 4K masters. I would have avoided a step for my 4K Filmized Remaster by using the 4K masters, for sure, but I think Disney did a pretty bad job with their upscaling method (on Episode I, at least).

Here is a quick and bad example of their process : wide shots almost always looks over-sharpened on the official 4K master, while my 4K Filmized Remaster off the 1080p master looks much more natural. See the screenshot below :

Finally got round to watching this and it is now my goto version of this movie, i think the colour grading is soooooo much better. I do think that the saturation could be just a fraction more but i have a TV setting for that, some scenes seem a touch duller due to the tint revision but that is me being super nitpicky. I actually like the slightly over sharpened look of the 4k version and some of the hair strands are not visable on this version probably due to the 3D Bluray source being one half side but the more accurate colour balance makes up for that in this, I can absolutely live with it and this is the best version of this movie i’ve seen since 1997, the audio is stellar too, great job MJBento many thanks!

I agree, the color grading is A+ work. Overall really nice presentation and solid 4k upscale. Great work all around!

Thank you so much.

Has anyone actually downloaded this yet? I got a bunch of random files by mistake.

I figured out what was the problem. The key I sent everyone in PM got a writing mode and someone deleted my original file and started to add his own files on MY folder. With the help of a kind member, I got the original file back for a day. I made a copy of it. Good for me because that someone deleted my file again. Now that I’ve figured it out, I’ll be sending PMs to everyone really soon with the updated Resilio keys that only allows you to grab the files and not overwrite them. Thanks for your patience.

EDIT : Prelogy 4K Filmized Remasters are now available.

Hello there !

Following the Harry Potter saga, Titanic and Scooby-Doo duology, I’m starting a new 4K Filmized Remaster of the entire Star Wars Prelogy. I’m using the untouched remastered bluray image as a source and I’m upscaling it to 4K, using my best Topaz Video AI settings. Then, I’m applying a film stock grain and I’m also using 35mm film stills available on this forum to match color grading of the final image with the 35mm version. Here are few screenshots of what I’m working on. Stay tuned

looking amazing, there is another open matte print floating around with the original colors taken from an old HDTV rip, could maybe use that as reference for some shots too, the dvd is way better balanced on color for sure, that yellow and green revisionist tint on the 3d bluray annoys me. Would love a link when finished.

EDIT : Hi, anyone needing an easier way to get the 4K Filmized Remaster can now PM me. All released 4K Filmized Remasters are upcoming as well. Thanks for your patience.

Hello there !

Following my Harry Potter 4K remasters series, I’m launching a 4K Filmized Open Matte version of James Cameron’s Titanic.

The goal is to preserve the now 1080p 3D-exclusive Open Matte version in 4K (with an appropriate layer of film grain), to restore the original color grading seen in theaters, and to get rid of the over-sharpened look of the official 4K release in Scope.

Original CinemaDTS audios will also be used in English and Truefrench.

Below are screenshots of what I’m working on. The image is already processed in 4K with film grain. I’m actually working on the color grading and using the original DVD as reference.
