Usually I am able to remember almost all movies and games that have come out in my lifetime, even if they came out almost 25 years ago and I didn’t see them, but this one is total news to me. Just so you know, movie-licensed games are rarely good.

Watched both of the Pixar Monsters movies today with my brother, which was fun, even though I don’t feel that they’re up to scratch with other Pixar efforts like Toy Story or WALL-E.

Just finished watching both Kill Bill films. Very satisfying. I love the moment in Volume 1 where The Bride finds out she has been in a coma for four years, and the bit in Volume 2 when Bill recites his speech on Superman. I love the characters and the direction is fantastic. The action scenes, particularly those in Volume 1, are some of the best ever put to film.

The Spy Who Loved Me (1977) - 8/10

Very great! I loved Moore as Bond and it was full of fun scenes. My favourite Bond film so far, with Skyfall coming in a close second.

I absolutely adore Toy Story 2 and it is within my favourite films of all time.

Of all the people to die in 2016 I never expected him to be one. What a damn shame.

The Man with the Golden Gun (1974) - 5/10

I felt wholly uninterested whenever Francisco Scaramanga wasn’t onscreen. Christopher Lee single-handedly brought this film up for a four to a five out of ten.

The Hateful Eight (2015) - 8/10

Ultimately Tarantino succumbs to his bloodlust by the end, which was rather predictable, and there is an overabundance of exposition scenes, but the characters are really great and memorable, and the cinematography and score are absolutely excellent. The writing and direction are also very great, as always with Tarantino. He really is a great director, and I don’t believe he has made a bad film (I have yet to see Death Proof, which some say is his worst). I loved this film.

I recently attempted to watch the 1967 Casino Royale movie, and it was complete trash. It had the barest of plot, characters, anything that makes a good movie, and the worst part was it wasn’t even funny. If it was at least funny I might have written it off as a good spoof (which I believe is what they were going for), but as it stands it is just dull.

I don’t think any film is worth a zero out of ten. Every film has at least some effort put in, like picking up a camera or opening an editing program.

10/10 = Perfect/nearly perfect
9/10 = Amazing
8/10 = Great
7/10 = Good
6/10 = Mostly good
5/10 = Okay
4/10 = Bad
3/10 = Terrible
2/10 = Horrendous
1/10 = No redeeming qualities

The Mankiewicz trilogy has never been fully appreciated and I don’t know if it ever will sadly.

In terms of the debate that rages here and other places: no. To change the character in such a dramatic fashion loses that character and their traits. Do another story that is your own and make your own decisions. Fleming created Bond for specific reasons and the films created their own version to suit cinema with varying degrees over time. But the character is the same. What they do now is off he deep end in terms of losing thre character so they might honestly give in to all this off base furor that has been raised.

And I get so tired of the psychoanalysis people do. 007 was created in the 50’s and has frequent sexual adventures yes. It was a combination of wish fulfillment and adventure writing yes. The idea goes all the way back to St. George and the dragon and winning the affections of the damsel in distress. But it does not make him a sexist or misogynist or a dinosaur despite what M said in Goldeneye which itself was too full of swipes at Bond to placate those in the 90’s who thought he couldn’t come back in the post Cold War landscape.

What people are actually criticizing is how the films frequently utilized cinematic shorthand or made Bond a ladykiller in ways reminiscent of classical adventure heroes onscreen. Fleming’s creation is far more human and his characterizations of women are truly grand. This is where I think the films failed: in that not making the female characters as strong as they were in the books it makes them seem more like appendages and rather useless and also serves to make Bond seem like what the analysts have claimed.

Why do you hate the Craig and Brosnan films? I really enjoyed most of them.

Live and Let Die (1973) - 7/10

My first foray into Moore territory, and I must say, it was quite an introduction. Fun action and beautiful locations punctuated by good characters and a charming performance by Roger Moore. It had flaws, but they weren’t many. Great song and villains too.

The Shining (1980) - 9/10

I liked it slightly less than the only other Kubrick film I’ve seen, 2001: A Space Odyssey. That’s not to say I didn’t like it; it was absolutely fantastic.

Just for the sake of torture, I went ahead and watched both of the DCCU films that currently exist.

Man of Steel (2013) - 2/10

I hate the Superman character in it, I hate the direction, the terrible camerawork, the atrocious editing, and the bland colour pallette. The characters are boring and poorly acted, and the end battle with Zod is laughably destructive. I guess I like the music, and a couple other assorted details, but this film is truly horrendous.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) - 2/10

The colour pallette has improved and Ben Affleck is okay, although he is given absolutely nothong to do. The music is good once again, bit the story is even worse than Man of Steel, and the character decisions are awful. The action scenes fall completely flat on their face and once more the editing, camerawork and direction are hopeless.

Those two films may well be my least favorite comic book movies, and I will never be watching them again.
