Info: Can't find a dvd? HP will make it for you!
Time

http://imdb.com/news/sb/2008-01-24/

Hewlett-Packard has signed a deal with Sony Pictures to turn out DVDs from the studio’s library whenever customers request them, the Los Angeles Times reported today (Thursday). The deal will allow consumers to order movies that ordinarily would not be stocked by dealers because they are too obscure or too old. HP indicated that it expects to sign similar deals with other studios. “We’re hoping this provides another option to make available products that wouldn’t necessarily garner widespread retail shelf space,” Jason Spivak, head of strategic development at Sony Home Entertainment, told the Times.Added Doug Warner, head of HP’s digital content business, “If studios can sell more catalog than previously, they can generate more money.”

Personally I’m excited about this, but also afraid that we may only get cropped and/or non-anamorphic and/or non-remastered transfers

Any opinions?

Star Wars: REBORN - The Complete Saga (* unfinished project *)
Time
I just read this entire thread, watched all the trailers and got done downloading the windu duel... I can't wait to not see this!

To everyone not involved, this is perhaps the most original edit I've ever heard of - sorry about your run in's with the media, they can be pesky. Something similar happened to me last year where I was contacted by Axl Rose's (of Guns n Roses) attorney via a C&D letter and then some radio stations in California who wanted to chat with me and put them in contact with Greg Gabriel (the attorney) - all over some stuff that will never see the light of day...

In any case I hope all of this attention is actually more encouraging than hindering - it just means more people want to see what you're capable of, and in some ways maybe even feel threatened by, especially if LFL was the one who tried to put the kibosh on it (which they unsuccessfully didn't not )

cool, I'll have to look into that

Also, I think I might rip the star field from one of the GOUT dvds crawl and loop it for a minute, as long as there's no real discernible movement, and use it as the background for the opening crawl/credits as well as a new reconstructed end credits, maybe done to match the credits of the movies? IDK, just tossing ideas out here

Ok, I did that - what do you render as once you're done?

As for "SWHS in 60 Seconds" - don't you think that 60 seconds is too much? ;-)

I'm just kidding - I think it's a great idea!

Cool! Now your doing a Holiday Special Edit. The only thing I need to to to my edit is to make a nice opening crawl. The inly diffrence I'm going to do is that I'm going to have white letters scroll on the screen instead of yellow to match the Special. I also am using the KCCI Version of the Special, and also quite possibly going to change some of the background music with my Dads 1977 2 Record set of the Star Wars OST.

Mine's been "done" since the other day, but I really want to make this dvd quality (at least as good quality as the AngrySun transfer) - what program did you use to edit?

I also changed some music - notably the intro music and the pan into Chewie's house, as well as the end creits, but nothing really too major - just enough to add a bit of consistency

My crawl will be yellow since I'm going to change the opening title scene anyways - or maybe I'll just render a new white title and do the crawl in white as well - who knows?!

The Star Wars Holiday Special: A New Hope (Released)
Time

I know there’s a few of these going on right now (the preservation project, and the “decampified” edit) but I’m trying to do something completely different.

I’ve already done the basic editing, but I think I might have to go back to the source and re-edit from the beginning because I think I’ve messed up.

Here’s what I have at my disposal:
DVD Decrypter
KCCI AngrySun DVD
Vegas Video 8 Pro
Womble

*I ripped from the angrysun dvd with dvd decrypter to a pristine lossless rip of the video, and had to convert the ac3 to wav so that I could edit it in vegas. did the video and audio editing simultaneously in vegas and now when I try to render the new 30 min cut, i get terrible quality (with interlacing/deinterlaced) lines during the video

What would be the right way to go about doing an edit that won’t lose any quality (from an already fairly “bad” source - I’m using the term lightly here since the KCCI broadcast is wonderful quality for an old VHS tape)?

I’d like to continue editing in Vegas if possible (for both audio and video), so should I do a new rip from the AngrySun dvd using ADM’s guide, or try editing in womble or even something else entirely? I just don’t want to lose the control I have over fades and audio edits, as well as number of tracks I can edit on simultaneously

Thanks in advance for the replies, and I can also update here on the status of the edit!

Right now the editing is done and here’s what is left:

  • I want to add in an opening crawl detailing the new storyline that I’ve edited together

  • Need better star field background to use for intro and to superimpose opening crawl onto

  • Create new title screen instead of using that crap one from the video

  • Perhaps do new character intro title shots from video in the special (to match the existing one, but not so long and maybe better shots?)

  • patch up stormtrooper raid intro

  • one or 2 audio glitches to fix

  • convert to matted widescreen to get rid of top and bottom VHS lines (if it doesn’t look too bad to do that)

Maybe someone can help point me in the right direction with how to do this…

Great to see that we're all talking about the holiday special again - I got MattMahdi's disc in the mail a few weeks ago of the KCCI broadcast from AngrySun and as he said the quality is excellent

Here's the thing - I'm almost done with my edit, but the problem I'm running into is rendering

I'm cutting in Vegas Video 8 pro, using a rip of the video from the angrysun dvd, and after i render to mpeg i get shit quality video

I'll post more detail later about the problem, but I'd love for some other people to see this 30 min edit of the special, maybe Matt can include it on his preservation whenever he starts on it again

I just got done watching my edit - it's pretty good I think, I have a few things to fix but here's what I noticed immediately that I hadn't noticed during editing:

I completely removed Leia, Saundann (except in 2 spots) and almost all the wookie talking when there's no humans around

I have at least 3 or 4 edits I have to still make - mostly just repairs and better transitions

I adjusted the brightness/contrast/blue levels on the entire video to take out some of the orangey hue

There's others, I'll add it in a bit when I get to class

Also what else should I cut other than the stuff I listed?

Well, I just got done doing the main editing on my cut of the Holiday Special and I pretty much cut out as much of the wookie stuff as possible, then also got rid of all the musical numbers and tried to make a Readers Digest version of the "plot" (if you can call it that)

IMO, it's turned out pretty good so far - I've wittled it down to 30 mins from 2 hours

I should be done soon - Vegas 8 kicks ass for editing!

Thank you for all the support on this edit and I hope to see lots of replies.

Yea I'm going to fix 'em, these are just my Workprint copies. The final Version will be great.

I must say, I like the old shot better on the first one - the blue, dark tint is easier on the eyes (am I turning into George?) but the second shot's color correction looks pretty good.

Same here - the green tint is a bit much

If it contains one complete audio file (e.g. song) then its easy, but if there are lots of separate little audio segments in .swf then often times, the conversion goes out of sync. I use ADShareit as a first attempt to convert the files. I have found it to be the best out there. If I still get audio sync issues, I usually just do a screen capture. set the flash up to about the correct dimensions, and record it. I like Camtasia Studio for this. Another thing that can get tricky is if there is user interaction in the .swf file. Its best to practice just how you want it to go, and then use a screen recorder.

This is all for flash files (swf) which mostly store the images as vectors (thats why they can be scaled up very nicely), however if you have flash video (flv) thats a whole other story. You just convert it like it was any other video.

Thanks for the advice - it is a SWF but I think I'll have to do a screen capture since some of these have audience participation, and it's not just one song per file, most of the clips are a few mins long with lots of dialogue and background music

I'll try ADShareit first and let you know how it goes from there

Also, is there a specific size I should use if I have to screen capture? I know it shouldn't be 640x480 or anything like that. I want the best possible video and since it is SWF I wondered if there was a way to make this anamorphic fullscreen since it can be infinitely scaled (if that's even a real term and/or possibility)

Info: 'Camp Chaos - Napster Bad Edition'
Time

I’m a big fan of the Camp Chaos “Napster Bad” series that they did on Metallica back a few years - well, I ended up saving the Flash files from their site, and forgot about them - well, recently I checked their site again and they’ve converted to QT files - lower res, but better audio, whereas the Flash files are perfect resolution and can be scaled up or down without quality loss, but the sound is kinda bad… In any case, I have lots of the stuff they did, plus stuff that’s no longer on their site including games and I want to preserve these on DVD, the only problem I’m running into is converting the flash files to a workable video and possibly mixing the best video (Flash) with the best audio (QT).

So, the question is, has anyone else ever converted Flash Movie files to some other format without a loss in visual quality, and what would be the best way of going about doing it?

Also I realize the minigames probably won’t be a candidate for preservation (since they require a mouse) so is there any way I can include all the original files on the dvd, maybe as a DVD-ROM feature?

Thanks!
