the titles on the forum?!
Time
I e-mailed Jay about a week ago, asking about an icon change, and havent gotten anything back yet. Anyone know about how long it takes, since im sure he is busy, and im just curious.

Just wondering. BTW, it would be really cool if after a certain number of posts you got to pick your own title. I wonder if we should move that over into the suggestions area?

The Quotable Quote

Isnt there a bit in the conversation before they drink, something like this:

Wesley after listening to Vizzini for a bit, "You have a truly dizzying intellect."
Vizzini, quickly replies, "Wait 'til I get started."

Or something to that effect. Thats really an incredible movie I think. Its not as true to the book as id like, but overall they are two different experiences for me. I can appreciate them both on their own merits.

I am eagerly anticipating his reply to that post Regicidal. Thats a lot more direct than most have been, so im not sure he can just rhetoric his way out...time will tell.
I do agree with you that the matter of when life begins (conception vs. birth vs. some point between) isnt settled. Most likely it wont be settled on this board . Jimbo, I really challenge you to offer proof that life begins at conception. Im not going to be an asshole about this, I just want to know what your justification is for that claim/stance/belief.

Id also venture to say that its incredibly naive to think that oil has nothing to do with the War in Iraq. Im not saying its the only reason, or even the main reason - its just not logical to deny its significance. I mean, why did we bail Kuwait out in the early 90's? You think that it might have had something to do with Saddam's forces torching vital oil fields? We have always had a vested interest in the middle east, and when that interest is threatened we get involved. And hey, if we get to knock around an insane dictator in the process why not? (I dont really know how to make sure that gets across as sarcastically as possible, a wink doesnt seem like enough).

HERO
Time
If thats in reference to Hero, I saw the VCD about a year ago. Most people are watching it for the first time now because it hadnt had a large release in the US. I know that some shops had VCDs and VHSs occassionally, but until this theatrical release most people hadnt even heard of it.
Shimraa, I dont usually tell people that they should see movies. But I feel like CTHD is really worth the effort. There are times where it is very true to its source material. Its part of a VERY large Chinese epic, so at times its extensively narrative. But I feel like its worth it, just an opinion. And its not like I have a problem with people who havent seen this film, or dont like it...im not like that. I just think there is a lot of great stuff underneath all that narrative. Not to mention its visually breathtaking, and yo-yo ma's score is amazing.

The Da Vinci Code (Movie)
Time
My gripe with Ron is similar to Gundark's, I dont think he very inventive. Thats not to say that he hasnt directed some great films. A Beautiful Mind was alright I think, but hardly worthy of all the acclaim. I think he has gotten somewhat formulaic, and most of his movies are made to appeal to the mainstream (and why not, its a business) but this makes them sort of stale, IMO.
If he stays close to the book, this wont really come into play. But if they start taking creative liberties with the adaptation, Im sure it will go downhill.

Unfortunately Warbler, most people dont mind taking their beliefs so seriously that they regard them as fact. Im not going to assume one way or the other with Regicidal, he may not be that silly. But if he did, hypothetically, I think he wouldnt be alone in that. I sincerely doubt Jimbo will confess that all he has are beliefs and not facts - there are very few people (I would assert) who are of the mindset you are. (Incidentally I am).
Im not telling you that you shouldnt think that way - but you call people to reason who have exhibited no interest in the stuff up to this point. (Thats not a blanket statement for everyone in this post, so hold your scathing retorts please)

Thats a well thought out post Regicidal. Bill Hicks definitely has some great thoughts. Its too bad that most people just write him off as an eccentric.

Jimbo, you consistently ignore questions posted to you by others. You neglect to pay attention to new challenges, and hide behind your rhetoric with ever increasing stubborness. Sound familiar?

Here is a concept Jimbo, the President appoints the Supreme Court. So what does that tell you. People he appointed himself dont agree with his/your position on abortion. OR if they do agree, they realize that it doesnt hold up as law.
Kerry supports the right of the people to choose for themselves. If you have a problem with the choices people make, attack them, but not the person who is maintaining the appropriate position of the government. When we start to lose our personal rights because of policy decisions from the President, thats a regretable day.

p.s. Ive never really taken a stance for or against either of these Candidates Jimbo, so ive never personally said that either candidate cares about life; if you'd like to know my opinion - its quite the opposite. I dont believe that either of these Candidates is overly concerned with the opinion of any single American who isnt contributing vast sums of money. If you believe otherwise, you are naive.

Jimbo, arguing that anyone who votes for Kerry has the blood of aborted children on their hands is really not very logical. I mean, abortion is legal now, but not because Kerry is president, so essentially, the blood is on every American's hands - already. Including yours. You support Bush, and he's been in office for 4 years - abortion is STILL legal, so is the blood on his hands? Is the blood on all his supporters hands?
The debate you need to be taking up is that life begins at conception. And im here to tell you thats a philisophical debate bub, so get ready for a long one. But until you establish that, on grounds other than religious, you have nothing to stand on.
I dont mean to be so closed minded about this, but there is no room in a discussion of potential law for religion. Thats just not the way this country works - or shouldnt be.

I would say if its to save the mothers life is the only time abortion should be legal. Even then I would disagree since the life of the child is more important.

Jimbo, do me a favor, and compare this statement to your current signiture (that Kerry quote). Let me know if you see any similarities.

And what if the mother's life is in danger because of the pregnancy? Well... it should be verified by doctors, and if the child would kill the mother AND himself, then an abortion would be inevitable...

Ric, I respect that you feel the way you do, and especially that you realize special scenarios. But I wonder how you feel about this scenario?
If a girl is 14 and raped by her father, and becomes pregnant, what then? Should she raise that child, the product of incest and abuse? I know this is strictly hypotheitcal, but I think that you have to maintain a position, we dont want any Kerry-esque waffling.

This isnt personal, but I think that its important to understand: passing a law about abortion will most likely be an "all or none" situation.
And for all those slutty whores attacks, here's something to chew on: A growing percentage of abortions in America are performed on women in marriages who dont like the sex of their unborn child.

I fear this thread has deteriorated, as predicted. Somehow Im not suprised by how simple a picture you paint Jimbo.

Getting into a discussion of what is morally correct or incorrect is really just an exercise in how much you want to type. Morality is definitively subjective.
It makes me happy to see people as opinionated as they are when it comes to this election. More sad than the choice we have to make in November is that so few people participate in our grand Democracy. I certainly hope that as polarized as people seem, we get more of a turn out at the polls.

Personally I dont think either of these candidates is going to be great for America. I think they are both dishonest and manipulative. And they both have far too much vested interest in Big Business.

One thing I feel is worthy of direct response is this: somebody listed a bunch of stuff that Kerry has waffled on, and in that list was his opinion about marriage and his opposition to a constitutional amendment. Man, if you call this waffling, you are missing something. This is preservation of a great document. Amending the constitution with such obvious bigotry goes against all that it stands for.
And here is a tired argument I cant seem to put down: for all you fundamentalists who think that homosexuality is so horrible - thats passing judgement. And making laws repressing that, something which is not harming you (or anyone else for that matter) is, frankly, inhumane.
