Bush and Nuclear Proliferation
Time
I was walking about my campus today, and saw some people registering students to vote/join the student Republican party. Now, I know full well that they are not there to debate...but I just had this nagging question, and I wanted to hear what they had to say.
So I walk over and ask if they would mind sharing their opinions - "What do you think about Bush supporting American development of new Nuclear weapons?"

One guy immediately says "If you are for unilateral disarm, it didnt work in the '80s and it wont work now!" and went back to handing out his fliers.
The other gent standing at the table said he didnt want to debate, and I told him i was just interested in hearing his opinion. He said that America has to defend itself, and its ok for us to have Nuclear weapons, but not for states like N. Korea, Iran, and *gasp* Iraq to have them. I didnt really think this made sense, and I guess he could tell...so he went on to say "I dont think its really that big of a deal."

I think Reg had/has a quote in his signiture about people believing a lie if its big enough and crammed down their throats enough...and this really drove that home for me.
Also, I just cant understand a person thinking that Nuclear proliferation is simply "not that big of a deal."

So maybe im overreacting, thats the purpose of this thread. Id like to know what you think. Not of Bush(specifically), not of Kerry. Dont tell me about WOMD in Iraq. I just want to know what you think of Nuclear Proliferation: IS it a big deal? Should any nation pursue the development of NEW Nuclear weapons? And finally, do you think any situation calls for the use of a Nuclear Weapon?

The Next Superman
Time
Forget Batman post Keaton (and I dont even really like returns that much). However, the new Batman, im excited about. Ive intentionally strayed from reading about it though...Im just excited about the casting and the bat-mobile. I guess we'll see.

A new Superman however. I think the casting can work, with Routh anyways. (And Topher). I really hope they move away from the old series more than you guys say they are going to...Its not that I dont trust you guys. I just hope they try and make something new, to get a new interest in the character/story/etc.

I agree that there are a lot of ways to interpret Superman. I think he is incredibly dense as a character. Id really like to see somebody tackle that aspect...Singer has the talent to do that story wise, I just dont know how the studio will want the movie to turn out? If they try to compete with Spiderman I dont think it will be as successful. They need to have their own style with this movie to make it work.

EDIT- Regicidal, did you not like the Punisher(recent)? Also, im glad to see some others who enjoyed the Hulk.

Maybe Chewie is like some other animals...there is a lipstick effect....or something...haha, I feel icky for posting this.

EDITED to include something on Topic - Leia in metal bikini = A+, 4 stars, etc. I dunno why, I dont think she is attractive in any other scene.
Also, aside from his getting chumped horribly on an undignified death (debatable), Boba Fett is so badass that its hot...

I wrote my senior research project on Kafka's Metamorphosis. His is excellent stuff. Ill admit to having more interest in Philosophers after Descartes. Long live Reason. (Which isnt to say that those before him were daft and useless - quite the contrary).

Reg - I think the soft spot I have for Dante is mainly due to my interest in literature, poetry, and linguistics. (Currently Im double majoring in English and Philosophy - though it seems obvious by the last few posts on this thread). His la Vita Nuova is incredible, IMO.
I would compare Virgil's approach to Dante somewhat, and say his significance is similar to Plato, Aristotle, and Socrates - valuable for knowing the roots, but slightly less insightful then contemporary works.

So im working a trade show in DC on saturday

Hey Simon, I was at that show representing with the owner of the store at which I work. Just thought that was neat.

I hate people who come to class unprepared for a test, and bitch about it like they are suprised. I hate it more when the teacher pities the dumb jerks and postpones the test. Thankfully in college, this has only happened once.

I also hate that somebody stole all the Kerry/Edwards signs from the neighborhood I live in. How lame is that. I didnt have a sign, but next door this guy had two stolen. And there was a story in my local news/opinion paper about somebody having their Kerry/Edwards bumper stickers ripped off while he was in Publix...lmao...it just doesnt make sense.

When we first tackled Soren in my Existentialism class last semester, I didnt get it. It takes some real focus and occassionally lots of re-reading. But honestly, after assimilating his work, its become some of my favorite.

Bossk id also recommend Nietzche and Sarte. I primarily recommend existentialism to people when they are first getting into philosophy. I feel like its a lot more relevant for people - I mean, it tackles questions that have import to most everyone.
But you should also consider some more foundational stuff. Descartes, Hume, Locke. From them you will get an idea of the foundations of contemporary philosophy. Older, "classics", like Plato, Aristotle, Aquinas, etc. are important, but I dont feel, as relevant.

Regicidal, what do you think of Dante? And have you by chance read any of Virgil's work?

In Memoriam: jimbo September 2003 - October 2004

Personally, I never had a problem with his opinions on SW. I mean, disagreement is healthy, and it promoted thought on more than one occassion.
However, the possible benefit was far outweighed by his ignorance, crassness, and general lack of respect for others. I also kind of hold him accountable for the degradation of the political debate thread.

Variety is the spice of life, but I hardly think that Jimbo was flavouring things around here more than he was making them sour. (Sorry for that )
His oppostion on things SW related will be missed...but there are others now on the board that have his views, and perhaps they will become more pronounced in his absence. I have to agree most with Klingon Jedi, when he said

Jets v Pats will be interesting, but I hate to admit I think the outcome will be similar to the Seahawks game. The Pats have a knack for getting out of tough situations, and unless they are unprepared (mentally) and the Jets are firing on all pistons, the streak will continue.

My mom likes the Steelers, and they are doing pretty well, but I dont think they are well rounded enough to beat the Pats next week. I think that NE's streak may last into the post-season. Id say the Eagles have the best chance of beating them, and then shortly after, the Vikings. I mention Min simply because of the sheer quantity of offense they are producing - whereas NE isnt really well known for blowout scores.

*fingers crossed for the Jets*

The neat thing about 1gig of storage space, is uploading a shit ton of music to your G-mail account as attachments, then accessing them from any other computer with internet access. Its fun. Plus, you could essentially do that with any large file. A game, or something to that effect.
I dont really use it for mail issues. Not because of the privacy thing though...just because I like my other accounts.

Well, if you use the PT as a body of reference, he might have caught the blast in his hand, or mouth, and spit/thrown it away. Or, he might have teleported, or CGI flipped out of the way. Really, the possibilities are endless.

But in all seriousness, that would have been an odd plot device. I wonder if Yoda would have simply taught him as a Force Ghost...or maybe Luke just gives up (his x-wing is just about submerged) so he lives on Dagobah for the rest of his life. Man, I dont think Empire would be my favorite if that happened

P.S. I was looking at this chocolate bar I bought, its from a company called Dagobah, and on the back it says that Dagobah is Greek for "temple of the Gods" or something to that effect...I thought that was neat.

I dunno what to say, but this is great reasoning man. I laughed so hard when I read this (in the computer lab no less). This is just another tid-bit to add to the "lack of continuity/nonesense" that comes from Lucas.

I think it is a popular misconception that Democrats are somehow more focused on minorities. In fact, neither party is really overly focused on minroities. If you look at the general campaigning trends this becomes more clear. I think that the general idea, among politicians, is that certain demographics always vote inside a certain party - and all a candidate has to do is make a few comments here or there about their support of the minorites. For some reason, it seems they think this is sufficient campaigning. Its very disrespectful.
Its sad that the overall climate has changed so little in the last 30 years. Its like Civil Rights came and went, and now that its not at the forefront of the media (at least not as much as it was initially) people just kind of brush it off.
