I also like version 1. Just wondering, is there some reference that’s used to determine what the “correct” colors are? Or is this kind of a whatever-seems-to-look-right approach? Not that there’s anything wrong with the latter, but I’m just wondering if my preference for how it looks lines up with how it actually used to look.

Absolutely zero reference has been used

@Williarob: Thanks for the file!

I already started working from a screen grab of your earlier posts and came up with these:

http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/184689

http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/184691

They’re by no means perfect of course, just an indication. Pick your poison 😉

The first one is a slight deviation from yours; a bit lighter and warmer, while overall keeping the same balance in tone.

For the second one, I tried to match the tone of the noise and the color of the sand in the TN1 frame as best I could

P.s: how do I embed a picture from flickr inside a post? doesn’t seem to work, I just get a link instead.

What strikes me is that the orange/brown noise in the shots is so prevalent that it becomes part of the overall color tone of the picture and I wonder if that wasn’t intentional. (not the noise, but the color) It gives the shots a bit of a sandy/desert-y look and frankly, I kinda like it. (maybe because that’s how I remember how the shots looked from VHS) But I also remember that they shot the desert scenes through a “panty hose filter” on the lens, which acts a bit like a color filter and which leads me to believe that might have been a deliberate choice for the color tone of the picture.

What I see in Williarob’s and Mike’s cleaned up shots is that by removing the dirt and noise, this color has also been taken completely out and left with a very clean, natural looking shot but I wonder if that’s how the shot’s actually supposed to look, color wise.

Good point. Perhaps something more like this is what they were going for?

Imgur

rather than this:

Somewhere along those lines, but maybe not as intense.

Could you, by any chance, upload both pictures, TN1 version and cleaned up, so that I could have a go at it?

Thanks 😃

What is this glitch? I cant get the framecount but its after the line “your sad devotion to that ancient religion hasnt helped you conjure up the stolen data tapes…” when the camera cuts,

taken from the 1.6 proper bluray release, its been there since 1.0

Looks like a color correction issue? there’s also some banding on the guy’s face

I guess i missed something, but I’m still confused exactly why -1 or rogue1, or whoever they are, is opposed to this being released?

As far as I understand it, he started Team Negative 1, who released version 1.0, but due to some alleged misconduct by Negative1/Rogue1, the team disbanded and now some former members of that team are continuing the work without him. (shoot me if I’m wrong)

I for one, am VERY grateful for this release.

so I guess that is how it is on the laserdisc.

You might be right, I switched to the mono mix and the glitch isn’t there. The laserdisc audio also seems to have some other minor issues too, around 01:19:00 the audio seems to be slightly out of sync, but as you said, that’s probably just the way the laserdisc audio is…

But again, thanks and congratulations on this stunning release.

all (very well deserved) praise aside, I did seem to notice a shot that looked like it got left out during the cleaning process. Around 00:09:45 when C-3PO says “what mission, what are you talking about?” it looks like 3PO’s head is being swarmed by flies (very splotchy dirt marks)

around 01:10:00 there’s an audio glitch when CPO says “that isn’t very reassuring” instead of the word “that” there’s a tiny piece of audio score from probably a different part of the film.

Haven’t checked the forums in a while since somehow I didn’t receive any more notifications in my mail even though I’ve subscribed to this thread.

And then I found out there was another version out of the SSE.
