Fellowship Of The Ring Extended Edition Blu Ray color correction (* unfinished project *)
Time

Ok, so the idea is to use the theatrical version of the blu ray and the Extended Edition DVD as reference for color correcting the Blu Ray release of The Fellowship Of The Ring, using Dr.Dre’s color correcting tool.

This will be a jump into the deep end as I have little to no experience in these projects.

Doing Color correction completely manually would seem like an endless task, but after seeing some sample results of Dr. Dre’s tool, the task at hand might be a little more straight forward than it first seemed.

These are VERY early stages though, as I have yet to purchase a theatrical version of the blu ray first.

Hey guys I realise I’m a little late to the party and first off I’d like to give a huge thank you to Team Negative and a big congratulations, it’s simply amazing and gorgeous and is a better version of the film than I ever thought I’d see in these troubled times.
However, I would like to ask how I can burn the film onto a disk. I was able to burn Harmy’s Despecialized Edition onto verbatim DVD+R DL disks but they’re max size is 8.5GB and this is 21GB.
1: Is it possible to put this onto a disk?
2: What disks do I need to buy?
3: If my computer can burn the Despecialized Edition will it be able to burn this (do I need to download any more software or by a different disk drive or something?)
Sorry if my questions have already been asked, I looked through the thread but I’ll admit that it’s late and I may have skim read some pages near the end.
Thanks in advance

Hi, welcome to the forums. these are technical questions though, and will have to be asked in the technical section. You can find that section on the main page of the forum.

Cheers.

maybe one could make a blu ray with both options…

Unless TN1 has some great insider secrets, not a single person on this forum (or indeed, apparently, the internet) has gotten homebrew blu-ray seamless branching to work, despite many efforts. If you want to read about it I can try to find the threads and PM you, since it will take us far off topic here for the sake of discussing (so far) completely fruitless efforts.

But yes, it would be fantastic if it would work.

I see. Never mind, then 😉

Well, the color and contrast look amazing already!

However, I did notice some quite noticeable light streaking on the far right side of the frame almost throughout the entire sample:

Is this present on the film or did it get introduced in the scanning process?

The Eastman vs Technicolor sample as well as the Silver Screen Edition seem to have quite noticeable light streaking/banding on the whole far right side of the frame.

It this present on the film as well or does this get introduced during the scanning process?

I think the sample given was the entire scanned frame so you see the junk on the edge that normally gets cropped.

would have to be cropped quite dramatically then and it’s also visible on the Silver Screen Edition

Looks like the smearing happened during our scanning process. Here is one of the original frames (EXR format).

http://www.thestarwarstrilogy.com/starwars/file.axd?file=/2016/01/StarWars.Frame.00022792.zip

As you increase the gamma / brightness the smearing becomes more apparent…

Could this also be the reason why there seems to be a light band on the right side of the screen throughout the movie?

Re the smearing that has been mentioned, I grabbed a frame from the same Spanish LPP, assuming that -1 used the LPP for this shot (they may have used another source), here is a comparison:

So it looks like the smearing is not in the Spanish LPP, whether it is a scanning artefact, or a processing/compression issue, I can’t say, and of course, they may have sourced those scenes from a different print that has the issue.

wow, that’s a big difference!

Well, I did a little experiment applying a bit of denoising and making the colors more saturated and “technicolorized”:

It’s just a fun experiment though - I love how grainy it is, because it represents what the print would look like in a cinema and the colors do need a bit more attention, which I think they’re gonna get for the BD25 release, but not necessarily in this direction.

wow, that looks very promising…

Oh, and in case I haven’t said it: Thank. you. so. f*cking. much, Team Negative One!!!

You know those days that we used to gripe that there wasn’t a proper version of Star Wars available anywhere?

THOSE DAYS ARE NOW OVER.

Yes, it’s no blu ray but this release has way more detail than ANY VHS, LaserDisc or DVD release EVER had.

Again, thank you TN1, for restoring our childhood.

I’m noticing that lights and reflections are “streaked,” like it was a slow exposure and their luminescence is trailing off a little. It’s especially noticeable when Artoo and Threepio are in the sandcrawler. Is this the result of overexposure in the scan or is it native to the print or negative?

EDIT: Here’s an example of what I’m talking about.

http://i.imgur.com/93i2t0z.png

Do you mean this:

with the smearing coming of Threepio and the lights

and this with the Jawas?

It might be something that happened in the compression phase perhaps?

I noticed the “light bleed” as well. To me it looked mostly like ghosting, which can happen when direct light hits a camera lens. Older lenses, like the ones used for Star Wars back in the day, were much more susceptible to this.

Or maybe it’s the result of the “panty hose filter?”

Poita, do you happen to have scans of this scene for comparison?
