Part of the problem here is that a raw scan of a single film is over 20TB, i.e. over $700 worth of HDDs. Not easy to share or distribute.

"Raw" doesn't necessarily mean "uncompressed", but more like "unprocessed"...

Your 8mm scan samples were perfect examples... they were compressed H.264 clips at 1920 pixels width, so they had more resolution to work with before squeezing it down to (probably sufficient for 8mm) 720p. People would be absolutely satisfied if TN1 released their scan(s) as something like that. In times of 25GB MKVs being shared without much hassle, no one would mind 100GB worth of high-bitrate raw scans.

I rencently made a 3D-model of the "Otana" from "X-Wing: Alliance" for my "X-Wing: The Miniature Game".

I've modeled the thing in 3ds max and had it printed in plastic at Shapeways.com. Then I painted it with acrylics. More photos can be found HERE.

I think Rinzler stating he "found" alot of this stuff is incorrect or misleading.

As far as I understood his working procedure on these books, I'd say it's quite accurate. If I remember correctly he was given free rein in the archives, and in his SW blog updates he wrote about how he accidentally found stuff by just going through the drawers and files. I wouldn't be suprised if some of the reels just turned up that way.

The safe areas are ill-defined these days

Pretty much every video, DVD, compositing and 3D software I've worked with during the last 15 or so years used the 5%/10% guides, so I'm pretty sure that's the most common ratio for them.

People with that amount of over-scan should really throw their TVs away.

You might be reading the chart wrong though ;) Only stuff outside the "Action Safe" frame might get cropped off... sometimes only half of it. But when it happens, text outside the "Title Safe" frame would be too close to the edge of the screen to look aesthetically pleasing, so it's advised to only position text inside the "Title Safe" frame.

If anyone gets any of the books can you please try it on their free PC app to see if the extra content will play? (i don't have a kindle or ipad)

Well, I've tried one of the free "Kindle Editions with Audio-Video" on the PC reader and the Android app and both of them showed a "Your browser does not support the video tag" error in place of the video.

So I guess this is true:

Kindle Edition with Audio/Video
Audio/Video content is available on latest generation Kindle Fire (except 1st generation), Kindle Fire HD, iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch devices.
I still hope someone manages to extract the videos from all three books... I don't plan to buy another tablet for them.
