The Vaultbreakers Collection - Disney Preservations

How much are the laserdiscs going for? Is there any list of the features that didn't make the dvd's? I've seen just about all the disney laserdiscs in an independent video store with a huge selection of everything.
The first laserdisc of Little Mermaid is 1.85:1, the rerelease with some features that I don't recall seeing on my platinum edition is 1.66:1.
The back of the Lion King laserdisc says it is 1.85:1, is this correct or a misprint?

How much longer will the format war last?

I really hope most people will only buy the next Star Wars release if it's good. DVD was such an improvement over vhs and laserdisc and I think most people don't buy as many dvd's anymore just because "it's on dvd with extras." The novelty has worn off, at least for me. More people are probably aware about online reviews and screenshot comparisons and maybe thanks to Lowry, people realize "Digitally Remastered" doesn't always guarentee an amazing improvement or even a good job with the transfer.

Any idea on when blu-ray drives and burnable media will become mainstream? I have to imagine it will be quicker than dvd. Ever since I learned blu-ray had 5 times dvd capacity, I've been dreaming of burning my own standard definition videos uncompressed while requiring less discs. Which is why I'm glad blu-ray won because HD-dvd has less capacity.

Has the Academy version of Lady and the Tramp been released in any format? The Platinum Edition dvd just pan & scans the 2.55:1 widescreen. But there was a separate full frame version animated for theatres that couldn't yet show widescreen. To include that version instead of pan & scan would have cost more by requiring Disney to do two digital restorations for one movie.

I would prefer some menu. It doesn't have to be as fancy or whatever but something basic would still be good. Can't any basic dvd burning software let you have the play movie, scene selection and then just import a still from the movie for the background? I don't see how the second disc could work without a menu (did I read correctly that disc 1 has only the movie and no other video files?). But ultimately, no menu is better than no dvd at all. I wouldn't want to wait much longer just for a dvd menu, it's the content on the disc that matters.
Someone could always take a menuless dvd and encode a copy with something basic. That's what happened with the TR47 version of the Star Wars laserdisc transfer.

To me, I think Empire looks worse in some ways than Star Wars. The bright snow scenes are very noisy. Star Wars faded a lot but I think the THX process was better able to compensate for that than the flaws in Empire. The smearing is definitely worse on Empire, they definitely overdid it. I have a pre THX '92 vhs tape and some of the scenes which had bad smearing didn't look like they needed that much DVNR at all.
By the way, what does Digitally Mastered really mean? I hope that's not too off topic but I always thought it was a big deal and indicated a good tape transfer without much generation loss. I didn't realize that the telecine was much more important. I knew the THX versions were digitally mastered. The transfer from the master to the GOUT dvd is actually pretty good but the master's quality is very dated. However, my '92 vhs also says Digitally Mastered and some of the older Star Wars from earlier releases have it too. It seems like saying something is digitally mastered today is like boasting a new dvd player has stereo sound capability.

GOUT image stabilization - Released

I'm wondering what the X0 project will do with the second screen. "R2D2 where are you?" Because I've never liked the brightness/contrast in this shot, it seems like the telecine did not capture the dark greys well. The other shot I really wonder how it should[i/] look is right after the binary sunset when C3PO has his arms up saying "Please don't deactivate me."

What is the ringing? Is that like edge enhancement and was it on the laserdiscs. As for the dirt removal, are you doing spot correction?

Actually, I've seen comparisons. That's only the R2 UK versions (Totoro, Whisper of the Heart) that are windowboxed. They look really washed out to, a very digital miniDV look. It seems to suggest the old dub is only available with the pan & scan Fox release.

Moth3r, how did you adjust the black levels? Did you just use simple photo software manually or something more sophisticated?

All right, what is so bad about windows media player? The quality is better than quicktime or real. I have divx player and probably should try that but I only opened the file, didn't want to save it and it opened in wmp by default. It's not that important to me either, if it was I would have already made a couple of long posts asking a ton of questions by now.

As far as I'm concerned, the longer they're in print, the better. The prequels are only available separately so I think they complement those nicely. I would think the stores would like being able to stock all 6 movies in a consistant style on the shelf.
By the way, I bought Star Wars the day it came out, Empire a little later in November '06 and Jedi in March '07. I never paid more than $15.00 (half the msrp) plus tax for any of them. You just had to compare stores. Even Borders started selling them for 20 as their regular price (not on sale) around November '06 and they rarely sell anything for less than msrp.

Original theatrical subtitles....
Time
I'm pretty sure the original clips from Empire of Dreams are film sourced. It might not have been in that great of condition and required a lot of clean up to use. They look different from the actual Gout (Han Solo running away from the stormtroopers) Someone once pointed out that an animorphic clip from Empire at Cloud City showed a ship flying by without the 97 correction to match the orange sky and it still had the matte line. (the thread was "I think the oot WAS restored.")

Actually, I think I know of another scene that would test this: The original entrance to Mos Eisley. Near the end of EoD, a few short before/after clips are shown of the new effects. There's very obvious DVNR smearing on the THX version in this shot. Any pre THX release could not look nearly as bright with the correct color as the sample from EoD. So does the animorphic widescreen clip from the documentary have the smearing?
This is from dvd active, they have a guide to the alterations.

This clip is also shown on the feature about the special edition from the 97 video release in pan & scan. Anybody know the source for those original clips?

Has the Gout actually been discontinued like they said it would? Because I still see plenty of new copies in stores now, over a year after it supposedly went back into the vault. Disney discontinued Lady and the Tramp & Bambi a year ago and I've only found Lady in stores where the dvd's are sometimes hidden behind other titles (FYE, Blockbuster) so it's not in plain sight from a distance.

I'm pretty sure the gold writing on the spines has a slightly different hue on some copies, which to me suggests a reprinting. I know LFL wanted to have a huge box set in 2007 but after deciding not to do that, I wonder if they figured it would make sense to keep the individual releases in print. Because there is no way Lucas doesn't want some release of his movies on the shelves. Supposedly the first dvd set with the bonus disc was going to be released again in an amazing new slim box but I haven't seen one at any store. The '04 and really stupid '05 box sets are still around too.

About Studio Ghibli. What does OGM stand for? The original English dub of My Neighbor Totoro was on a Fox vhs and DVD. The problem is the dvd is really no better than the vhs. It's interlaced, pan & scan and the original Japanese track is not included. I have the Fox vhs and the Disney dvd with the new dub (not as good as the old) but it would be nice to have them combined. I know the R2 Japan has the original dub for Laputa. According to IMDB, the original dub (for Kiki) was rare. Like only used for in flight movies or something.

Info: When does fullscreen show more than widescreen?
Time
I was just thinking about the back of the Pearl Harbor vhs. "This film has been modified from its original version. It has been formatted to fill more of your tv screen. During battle scenes, the black bars will be slightly bigger."
I wonder if that means you get the entire film image, completely unmatted?
And has a full 16 x 9 version of Titanic ever come about? A few clips were shown about 1.85 on "The Force is With Them: The Legacy of Star Wars" feature from the '04 Star Wars bonus disc. I have the vhs and that's a full screen transfer I'd definitely like to get on dvd. (It was also released in both formats on laserdisc) Is it wrong for me to say I like the 4:3 version better when watching on a standard tv?

Independence Day, really? I remember seeing it on tv very recently and it looked like clear pan and scan to me. Furthermore, some of the trailers that were about 1.85 showed no more on the top and bottom I thought. There is a full screen dvd available. Anybody know if the mix has been redone? My audio professor mentioned it was very uneven due to being rushed for theatres.
I know what you mean about the video being more matted than you saw it in the theatre. As I mentioned before, the same thing happened with Pursuit of Happyness.
I didn't mention James Cameron's films because I already knew about them. The list I wrote was ones I don't know about. Some might not be matted, I don't know.
Willy Wonka (from the 70's) is another. The back of the warner dvd says it is not matted but I have the full screen version and, honestly, it didn't look like I was missing anything.

I assume that since Fox and the Hound has only a 4:3 release on dvd twice, there's no widescreen laserdisc. People at Ultimate Disney are not sure what the original camera ratio is. Someone would have compared a widescreen laserdisc if it existed. Remember, a lot of the movies in the 60's and 70's were open matte.

So what is the aspect ratio of Mary Poppins? Are there any screenshot comparisons. I don't remember seeing anything about it on ultimate disney. Would the widescreen BatB laserdisc really go for less than 10?

So you're looking for a Song of the South dvd that is still in Pal? Because I thought someone here already got an untouched source (2 actually) and ran into trouble trying to convert it to NTSC.

What about preserving the original dvd of the Jungle Book since the new one is cropped to widescreen? This also applies to Robin Hood and Aristocats but the earlier versions of those are much easier to find.

One last thing, the original english dubs for Studio Ghibli on My Neighbor Totoro, Laputa: Castle in the Sky and I think Kiki's Delivery Service?

I posted this before but were you aware that The Little Mermaid- Platinum Edition on disc 2 has the knee cap scene in the Hans Christian Anderson feature? It's non animorphic but others here have said it looks better than the old limited issue dvd. And Little Mermaid has not yet gone back into the vault, Alladin just did but it's been out for a while.
Ultimatedisney.com is a good place to look around.

About Song of the South. The best version is definitely the BBC 2 broadcast. The Hong Kong laserdisc is unsubtitled but the picture is very washed out compared to the Japanese one. And there was some work here on putting together something good. I really wish I had heard a more recent update from this.

One eBay auction for a vhs tape claimed it was NTSC but dubbed into French. I've never heard of such a release. I did recently come across it in segments on youtube. The picture quality looked really good, both source and lack of youtube compression.

By the way, I live about 30 min from a huge independent video store that sells a ton of laserdiscs. They have a lot of the Disney ones. I saw the Lion King deluxe edition for about $35. I'm considering seeing if I can get a laserdisc player just so I can buy and watch Beauty and the Beast.

There's a whole section on Snopes.com about the supposedly dirty stuff in disney films.
