GOUT image stabilization - Released
Time
About black levels, I think the tv reccomendation is just so it shows up on most tv sets which may not have the full range from 0-255. My family's widescreen tv has about 1/4th the contrast ratio of our analog rear projection. If stuff like the opening of ET looks completely black, then too bad. I don't like the idea of compromising the picture just so it shows up better on a tv. (isn't pan & scan another example of that?)
I don't know if that is the actual reason. But my video production professor told us there are legal black/white limits by the FCC in the US. He's also mentioned many times before that video basically has the wide range from dark grey to light grey.

And would Arnie be able to post his laserdisc vs Gout caps? I've seen the comparisons already here but those might be cool.

JEDI CON 2008-BEHIND THE SCENES CAST AND CREW INFO ON STAR WARS FILMING, DVDS AND OTHER BITS...
Time
I'm still surprised they won't just release the holiday special anyways. Sure, it sucks and I have not been able to sit through it completely without fast forwarding. But could it hurt if they just put it as a hidden bonus on one of the special features discs?

The holiday special doesn't make me cringe as much as watching the 2004 versions. I know a lot here don't like the prequels but people make bad films all the time. The video presentation has got to be the worst for any commercial release and that's unacceptable. I might actually be excited to watch the next version if the color is timed decently. I consider the unaltered dvd's to be of higher overall quality because it was a competant mastering that was state of the art.

The next set needs to have the original versions remastered with all the different audio mixes or else I won't buy it. And I encourage others to do the same. Most people consider dvd good enough that they won't buy the blu-ray if it's only what they already have on dvd. But the Die hards who will buy it for the 20th time, those are the people who care the most about the original versions.

If the blu-ray doesn't have the original versions, rent them.

Info: When does fullscreen show more than widescreen?
Time
Interestingly, the old dvd (or was it the laserdisc) for Willy Wonka said "matted" on the back. I saw Independence Day on one of the Encore channels recently (4x3), the people were not visible in that shot of the white house. It definitely had the pan & scan appearance as I previous wrote about seeing it on tv. This leads me to think the full screen dvd is just pan & scan.
There's a facebook group called "People who like fullscreen more than widescreen are truely dumb." (I don't know if they can cansider themselves TRULY smart.)
http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2217646160

Does anyone know what movie the picture is from. It looks a lot like Coruscant in Revenge of the Sith but it's not, plus any full screen Star Wars movie will always be pan/scan. I wish the image was bigger so I could better tell. But that's the kind of image that actually makes fullscreen look better. You actually see more of the people (ok just their legs) in the 4x3 version. And the extra space on the sides that contains nothing looks pointless, especially with those black bars on a standard tv. (truly dumb to use that example for a pro widescreen group)

First attempt at posting took me to a site with really annoying pop ups, then page cannot be displayed. It was fine after closing out and reopening. In the link, my images hosted did not show up and the script code didn't underline properly.

Whatever happened to my post about seeing the previous posts (like it was before) when in post mode.

Political compass: interesting test
Time
Anybody see "Something Wal-Mart This Way Comes" from South Park season 8? I think that was pretty accurate.
Just think they started out as a small store and got bigger because (get this) more people liked it and wanted to shop there. And this meant (gasp!) they just had to hire more workers. And I wouldn't know about this instance but usually if you want to persuade people to work for your company, you usually have to (are you sure you can handle this?) offer to pay them better than what they currently have. And just think, all that because of corporations being greedy. The government better use force and pass some law just because some people don't like where others choose to shop.
I really don't think the mom and pop store is as hurt as people might think because they serve different needs. Walmart sells general stuff, for example I might go there because I want the latest mainstream new dvd release. If I didn't buy a dvd from Walmart, I would find it at my local shop around the corner called Best Buy or Borders. I sure hope some pandering politician doesn't accuse me of taking away "middle class" jobs from Borders because I wanted to buy a dvd for $20 instead of $35. Hell, I might not even buy the dvd at all if I could only get it for 35. A real small mom and pop store couldn't have the capacity to have as many dvd's as Best Buy or Wal-Mart. (Although an independent video store could) But they could specialize in foreign films, anime, used video tapes or discs. If I want an ornate table, I'll go to an antique shop. If I just want some stand for a television, I'll go to Wal-Mart.

I've seen that chart before but I've never understood it. I find the World's Smallest Political Quiz diagram to be much clearer. There was another more detailed quiz with much more than ten questions that used the same graph but I can't find it.

I pretty much agree with radio talk show host Neal Boortz on his proposed new amendment:
"Neither the federal government, nor any state or local government shall make any activity a crime unless said activity violates another person's right to life, liberty, or property, either through force or fraud."

Digitally Mastered. Really. That's cool, I guess it means that if I transfer a 3rd generation fuzzy vhs tape to dvd, as long as I edit it on vegas and make a master avi file, I can truthfully say "Digitally Mastered."
Wow, that is pretty useless to mention these days. Like boasting about how my videos recorded on my Hi8 camcorder are "presented in Academy screen format."

Yeah, just posted with the new look and I didn't like how I couldn't see the previous posts. It helped me a lot to not miss anything I wanted to comment on. Other enhancements ("View Your Posts" feature, B, i, U buttons you can click)* would be nice. But this is something that used to be available and now it isn't so that makes it dissapointing.

*Videohelp.com has these features.

The Vaultbreakers Collection - Disney Preservations
Time
I have the original Alladin soundtrack. I ripped it to my computer under WMA setting (mathematically lossless). Personally, I think there's some empty bits but since windows media player doesn't support FLAC, I haven't bothered.
713 kbps, 6.74 mb
I saw the old Jungle Book dvd in the same video store that has all the laserdiscs. They have a lot of the Limited Issue's for rent. Should I talk to them about getting it? Maybe offer to trade for the newer Platinum dvd?

Nice! Is that the censored scene from Make Mine Music or Melody Time? I keep confusing which cut a whole skit and which removed the smoking for the region 1 but not region 2. Was it censored on the vhs (if there was a vhs)? Why is it window boxed?
Someone mentioned they acquired the Japanese R2 of Aristocats. What about the old dvd (which I just got used at gamestop)? I thought the picture looked pretty good and not over Lowry "restored."

It might rival the X0 project if they were not using the pre THX laserdiscs as well. Still I hope they are aware of the stuff you've done because if it restores detail the script might be of some use to them. Maybe you should see if you could compare some of your results.

Is there some script out there that could combine the vertical line resolution of the Pal laserdiscs with the horisontal detail of the Gout? Like know to use the NTSC scanlines but whereever there's an additional Pal line in between drop it in.

Speaking of Shakespeare and Monty Python... were you aware the Holy Grail dvd has subtitles "for people who don't like the film." They're taken from one of Shakespeare's plays but actually seem to somehow accurately paraphrase the real movie lines.

EDIT: Obi-Wan’s eloquent manner of speech really comes through in Backstroke-style subs (using Babelfish)

Regarding Anakin: “I hoped he does not attempt any to be stupid.”
Requesting to see Fett: “I should extremely like the present meeting this for to receive an award capture the fleeing criminal.”
Complimenting Fett: “Your clone is the unusual impression profound. You must be extremely arrogant.”

Are you sure you got that from babel fish? It doesn't sound any different from most of the dialog in Hack of the Clowns.
Is your English subtitle track for the entire film or just alien dialog?

How to use HuffYUV
Time
Okay I'm trying out Dscaler out now. The captures don't crop off the top. YAY!!! Looks good with a lot of options to adjust stuff so far except clicking on one option frose my computer. I had to turn off the power switch because ctrl/alt/del didn't work. It's impossible to say which exactly because opening up the program has it stuck on that setting still frosen. So I can't check. Something on the far left tab I switched to the other active option that looked similar. I hope the program isn't going to be stuck forever like this 'cause it looked really cool. With my computer that is built with a lot of power for video capturing what the hell could slow it down like that?

What I would have liked to know in the first place (had it not crashed) is how do I make sure capturing with Dscaler uses the huffyUV codec? Oh yeah and that audio stuff. Have the cable hooked up to the same place I used with PDI captures in virtual dub. But I don't believe I got sound with DScaler. (Could be wrong didn't get much of a chance to tell with the program crashing)

EDIT: the tab on the far left is called Sources. Most of the options were grayed out except the current one and the one I switched to got everything stuck. DScaler still won't respond.

Idea Wanted: the 1995 ET laserdisc extras - anyone preserved them to DVD?
Time

I’m surprised I haven’t seen this mentioned before but I recently saw the '95 ET set in a store for $20. I don’t have a laserdisc player so it wouldn’t do me much good but has anyone thought of transferring the extras to dvd? It says on the box that there are the deleted scenes, a documentary plus multiple trailers. These are all things that didn’t appear on the 2002 dvd which I still love because it has a fantastic transfer of the original version plus some good extras. The case is really nice too.
In fact, what did appear on the 3 disc gift set that didn’t make the 2 disc set? I’ve heard the “making of ET” dvd feature is shortened for the 2 disc set, is that true?
Also, is the newest soundtrack release altered because of the new version. The close up of the shotgun was simply cut out and an abrupt audio edit can be heard at this point, does the cd feature this?
