Global Warming
Time
"If the big guy is pointing a gun at you, and telling you that the idea is to see you dead, I think that's justification enough."

I was about to use the Han/Greedo scene as an example of a preemptive strike. I think if anyone wants to understand the conflict in the middle east, they have to read Now They Call Me Infidel by Nonie Darwish. She reveals the sad truth why bin Laden probably won't be caught but you'll never see any politician (Democrat or Republican) say it because it's very inconvenient.
http://www.amazon.com/Now-They-Call-Infidel-Renounced/dp/B000W8WSGY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1201760227&sr=1-1

About global warming. You should get Glenn Beck's An Inconvenient Book .

And why is it that people who are skeptics must be "paid by the oil companies or Bush?" What if some of these so called environmentalists have a hidden agenda of their own.

"PETA doesn't care about people."
Mr. Garrison, South Park

“Climate change provides the greatest chance to bring about justice and equality in the world.”
No matter if the science is all phony, there are still collateral environmental benefits (to global warming policies).”
-Christine Stewart, Canada’s former environmental minister

“To capture the public imagination, we have to offer up some scary scenarios, make simplified dramatic statements and little mention of any doubts one might have. Each of us has to decide the right balance between being effective and being honest.”
Stephen Schneider, 1989. He wrote a report about Global Cooling in the 1970’s and was the lead author of the 2007 UN IPCC report on Global Warming. Could this guy make up his mind?

“Free enterprise really means rich people get richer. They have the freedom to exploit and psychologically rape their fellow human beings in the process… Capitalism is destroying the earth.”
Helen Caldicott, Union of Concerned Scientists
(Note that just because some activist group has a cute name like "People who Care" doesn't mean it should be regarded as an authentic unbiased source. And capitalism means you have the freedom to use exchange money for goods and services and vice versa provided you don’t use force or fraud to obtain it. So how can somebody be exploited if they chose to do something?)

“The only hope for the world is to make sure there is not another United States. We can’t let other countries have the same number of cars, the amount of industrialization we have in the US. We have to stop these Third World countries right where they are.”
Michael Oppenheimer, Environmental Defense Fund
(Wouldn’t it be great if this guy actually had to live in a third world country?)

Info: When does fullscreen show more than widescreen?
Time
I'm pretty sure a lot less than 99% of full screen movies are straight pan & scan. I bet at least 25% of all widescreen movies are matted in some way. Kubrick is probably best known for doing this with his later films. I'm just thinking off the top of my head. The new disney dvd's for The Jungle Book Robin Hood and Aristocats are all cropped to widescreen. (And I don't think there would be any boom mikes to worry about in animation.) One of the Pirates of the Carribean movies (all Super 35) was misframed in the widescreen version. I'm pretty sure The Pursuit of Happyness is another super 35. I saw it at an advance screening and it looked like a 1.85:1 movie. I was surprised to see the widescreen dvd 2.40:1. They say a matted widescreen is correct because that's the way you saw it in the theatre but that wasn't true in my case. A dvd preview on the Casino Royale dvd is 1.85 and it shows more on the top and bottom.
Here's some examples for the Harry Potter films. (Anybody know how Order of the Phoenix was shot?)
http://plum.cream.org/HP/
Anybody know whether these films are open matte?
The Ten Commandments
Animal House
Airplane
Sixteen Candles
The Breakfast Club
Top Gun (one of the few older movies to get a special edition rerelease with a seperate full screen version from Paramount)
Pretty In Pink
Some Kind of Wonderful
What's Eating Gilbert Grape?
The Naked Gun (all 3)
Home Alone
Better off Dead
Robin Hood: Men in Tights
The Truman Show (The new dvd shows slightly less on the top and bottom the Trutalk montage with the mock LIFE cover is a good example)
A Beautiful Mind
Lost and Delirious (Lea Pool- 2001)
Stardust (Great movie! go rent/buy it. It's 2.35:1 and a user post on IMDB said it was hard matte. Still I'm sure I saw more on the top and bottom in the theatre than some of the widescreen clips I've seen online. The theatre screen looked about 2.15:1)

What I wish is that studios would give a full screen dvd release only for open matte films. For example Scorsese shot many of his films like Goodfellas in the 80's and early 90's so that they could be also formatted for 4x3 tv. He has returned to true widescreen with more recent films like The Departed. Guess which movie Warner made available in full screen?
And I know that it costs more to do a pan & scan transfer. Is that also true for making an unmatted release?

Blu-ray Disc or HD-DVD?
Time
"Recent information that BDMV (Blu-ray's commercial movie format) discs soon won't play without AACS encryption. Neither the discs or the software required to encrypt the content have been available to consumers so far, but Authoring for non-encrypted discs has. This will apparently force people who have already created their own BD movies from Camcorder footage or MPEG transport streams (from digital TV) may have to spend a lot of money copying discs to new media, or simply lose the abillity to play it."

What? Does this mean if I don't put some sort of copy protection on my home videos that they won't play? As soon as the price becomes reasonable (and it will be sooner than later now with the Warner decision), I had planned on burning my standard definition camcorder videos to a blu-ray disc because I'll be able to fit so much more on a disc and not worry about compressing it. I don't care about whatever copy protection there is for commercial movies, I just want to burn my own discs. Oh and if I ever was to legally purchase a blu-ray disc, I would expect it to play.

Also, where is some good information on the region coding for the new players? I know HD doesn't have it and Blu-ray has 3 but are they also set to restrict the current dvd regions.

"The People Vs. George Lucas" documentary...
Time
This sounds interesting. I've talked about why I joined this site but I'll try to repeat it here in a more condensed form.
I'm 21 but I never really grew up with the original films. I saw what I now know to be one of the last tv airings of the original Return of the Jedi on Christmas Eve 1996 but that's about it. In 2003, I saw Star Wars from the Death Star rebel briefing scene with the CG schematic on to the end. I remember wondering how it was possible to have that ring in the Death Star explosion back when the film was made, it looked like a modern CG effect. Not that it looked bad but my dad said they made some recent changes to the film. I thought that was nuts, like it was said on the Q & A of the Back to the Future dvd, they didn't erase the wires because they didn't believe in doing it. I figured that was shared by everyone in filmmaking.
My first year in college, I finally watch A New Hope as part of an assignment for one of my classes. It was just before the '04 dvd release so I borrowed someone's '97 special edition tape. I was bored by the beginning doc where they talked about the changes. I remember thinking when they talked about Jabba "I thought Jabba the Hutt was a serious bad guy, wouldn't Han Solo get in big trouble for stepping on his tale?"
I had just read the book Eragon a month earlier so unfortunately, watching the actual movie felt like a cliche ridden lame rip off of something else, rather than how it is actually the other way around. One thing that annoyed me was how the good guys always hit their targets with the ray guns while the bad guys missed. Even if they were sitting across each other at the same table.
I'm excited to get the (full screen) dvd set that Christmas. I've never had the movies before so any version is fine with me. Besides, I'm more excited to see the supposed state of the art restoration. But from the start, somehow the movies just don't look right to me. I remember wondering if that is really how good they are supposed to look, something just seems unnatural.
After seeing Empire of Dreams which I thought was really good, I now understand the importance and significance of the original film and wish I could see that version. Eventually, I find this site and realize Lucas apparently intends to never release the originals again which I find unbelievable. I later am able to finally watch the original versions on vhs with a friend at college since our library fortunately had the faces set. And I enjoyed it so much better than either the '97 tape or the dvd set. Now aware of just how bad the colors are in the dvd's, I remember saying to my friend that I bet if Lucasfilm just ported the THX versions professionally to dvd, it would look much better than the bootlegs and even the current dvd set due to the bad colors. I suppose I should regret saying that now (I didn't realize how bad the smearing is) but actually, even on my family's widescreen tv, I think the official '06 versions look better because the colors are not screwed up. And it does look a lot better than the bootleg set I have as well.

Well I guess that wasn't short after all. But I think the important thing is that most people will be happy as long as the OOT gets a proper release. I actually enjoyed the prequels having rented the first 2 from my college's library in early '05 and then seen ep III in the theatre. I don't really care that much about whether the prequels could have been better or all that. They are finished and I assume pretty much the way Lucas intended for them to be. I believe Lucas would be forgiven and win back many if he just stated the next time the trilogy is released, it will include all versions like Ridley Scott did with Alien, Legend and now Blade Runner and Steven Spielberg did with E. T. and now with Close Encounters. That's all he needs to do and most of the bitterness towards him, the SE's and prequels will melt away. And I even think Lucas would feel like an idiot for not getting it right the first time.

Can you copy dvd's made with a dvd recorder?
Time
I don't have nero or imgburn. I used Sonic record now, I wasn't even trying to copy the individual files to my hard drive. I just wanted an exact copy to another disc. Do you need anything to rip the individual files? Because I don't think I could do that with Sonic.

EDIT: You mentioned how you know I have the PDI card. Would you have any suggestions about what to do to solve the problem with the image shifting up in the frame? I haven't made any real captures using the card other than a few comparisons because a cropped image is worthless to me.

Can you copy dvd's made with a dvd recorder?
Time
I know the PDI computer capture will look much better. I'm just looking for a quick way to make a rather good backup of all my tapes in a straight transfer. I usually use my computer when I want to do some editing or enhancements to an existing video (slow motion, text). And I don't have the hard drive space either, I'm sure uncompressed captures of everything would easily clear 1 tb.
But the video files are different? What are they on burned dvd's and how is that different? And is there a way to check?

Can you copy dvd's made with a dvd recorder?
Time
I have one of the cheap countertop models from Sony and tried to copy a recorded (and finalized) disc in Sonic Record Now. It froze my computer that I use for video editing, which has plenty of CPU and memory.
http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&productId=11039219&langId=-1

Just a day before, I was able to copy a computer burned - dvd and burn it to another + disc. I really want a better dvd recorder so I can record all my video camera tapes to dvd in high quality. The sony device records a fairly fuzzy picture compared to the original tape. Not only would it be a good backup to tape but I want to make direct disc copies. I hate having to play a tape through 10 times to make 10 copies. I know recorders with a built in hard drive could copy direct like I want but would I need one? Shouldn't my computer also work?

(PDI Deluxe) VHS capture questions for those wiser than moi
Time
"I would mess around with it now myself, but I have a lot of other things to juggle atm."

Same here. Besides, wouldn't that lose resolution if I shrank the video.

EDIT: Then again, reading what you wrote. "Cap card A may make the picture area of the VHS capture 704 pixels wide in the final avi, but Cap Card B might make the same picture area only 699 pixels wide (but all will still give a 720 wide image stream in the end of course)" maybe not? Somehow I get the idea that a 699 pixel capture could never gain back the 21 pixels.

"I mean, a lot of the spot removal I'm doing probably won't even be noticeable to most people (except for big spots or drop-outs), but examples of this were already shown. I guess I could find another scene with really bad spots and make a video."

Would you happen to have any before/after screenshots hanging around? Are the shots you're working on from the Japanese special collection, THX definitive collection or both?

I don't know exactly what you mean by sweetspot drivers. I probably have them somewhere but I didn't actually install the card so I wouldn't know where to find them and what to look for. I'm totally annoyed about the image shift issue though. I mean, how could no one know on video help? (almost 100 views, no replies)
It's good that you discovered a way around it but that does seem weird that pressing stop would make a difference. Maybe the heads somehow can't hit the same field each time.
However, I actually did encounter that example of a interlaced cut but it wasn't quite exactly with video. And I'm pretty sure it will give me the same result at that frame every capture too.
Just for fun here it is.

I must not have paid attention to what it actually looked at full size so I didn't realize I would get a double image.
Would you have any suggestions about where else to ask about the PDI image shift?

Info & Info Wanted: GOUT film grain
Time
Wasn't it mentioned here earlier that for one of the widescreen releases, they had to search for a print before subtitles were burned in? And I'm sure the X0 team would be able to tell if any grain was added for the dvd release. I think it was just on the master tape that was used for the laserdiscs. I'm sure someone would have noticed if the X0 screens looked drastically cleaner.

No, I haven't come across anything like that. Is that on a frame right before/after a cut? What vcr are you using, by the way? And how good of shape are the tapes in? Do you think that they could just be a little worn out that the tape does not play precisely the same every time and that the capture card is merely faithfully capturing that? I know the format is not the most frame accurate or warp proof.

Is there any way you could post screencaps to better illustrate what is happening? I have the pdi card and I have had problems too, the video image is shifted up in the capture. My audio professor said it might be a timing issue.
http://forum.videohelp.com/topic335815.html

But that's not the same thing you're seeing, right? I've never noticed anything wrong with the fields in Sony Vegas. Even if I switch between even & odd fields first in the preferences or render box. But then again I haven't worked much with the pdi card so far. Either way, I have got to believe that there is some kind of control or plugin to compensate at the capture stage so you don't have to average it out in avisynth.

George Lucas to host showing of Star Wars "1977" for AFI's 40th anniversary.
Time
What about Beauty and the Beast? That has a special edition too plus a workprint version. I really think if AFI wants credibility, they should explain why this is not the same film that won 7 academy awards in '77. Not everyone knows what a restored print or anamorphic widescreen really means but they sure do, I hope. I would have been perfectly happy with the Gout included in the '04 set. Because then I wouldn't have gone online in search of the originals and learned about all animorphic video and DVNR smearing in the first place. So I wouldn't have known better.

Family Guy to kick off season with 1 hour Star Wars spoof
Time
Loved it. What was the Doctor Who reference? I thought it was interesting how some shots were from the SE while others were original. The sunset had the '93 colors. The "Look Sir Droids" didn't have all that stupid stuff. Most interestingly, the take off from Yavin was '97 but flying by the gas giant was original. Although the conversation was totally different with Greedo, Han shot him. period.
