The Kenobi <s>Movie</s> Show (Spoilers)
Time

I’m pretty hyped for this. So glad to see the Larses are coming back, particularly Joel Edgerton, there’s a chance to build some good character drama between Owen and Obi-Wan, and maybe alleviate some of the plot holes or inconsistencies between what was established in A New Hope and what was shown in the prequels.

I’m still holding my breath for a Qui-Gon cameo or references to the Clone Wars era.

Gonna believe the developers are smart and won’t shoot themselves in the foot by having Vader and Obi-Wan meet pre-ANH (I don’t remember if such a scenario happened in Legends). Hopefully they will find a way, such as a Force vision (taking visual cues from the Dyad fights in TROS) that allows them to build a great and emotional setpiece without breaking the canon (more than it already is).

Maybe not the most helpful comment, but I certainly didn’t expect the Boba story to end with him in prison (?) and the Slave I blowed up.
I enjoyed the episode, though!

I was just looking over old comments and had a new thought about this:

We only see Boba a few times in TCW, the first of which being this one where he ends up in prison. There’s a later episode where we see him very clearly still in prison, but then a later episode where he’s out of prison, and it’s not explained why. You’d imagine that all of those activities carried quite a large sentence, but somehow he’s released. I might see what I can do about the second episode (the Rako Hardeen arc for those who know it) to see if I can draw on an angle which results in Boba’s escape.

Since Bossk is one of the main instigators of the prison riot in the Rako Hardeen arc, I don’t think it’s that big of a stretch to assume both him and Boba found their way out off-screen amidst the chaos.

And MR, that is somewhat true. Although I’d imagine that if the ship was considered a prototype in TLJ that they would have made at least one more since then in the year gap between films.

Well, the TIE Silencer from TLJ is not the same model as the TIE Whisper in TROS, so one could pretend Kylo asked for a newer set of prototype fighters once he became Supreme Leader (and ship progression in-between Star Wars movies is nothing new, so…)

When Kylo was on Mustafar and he has killed everyone, he turns around sharply as if he has heard something call to him. I know you’ve added sounds to when he picks up the wayfinder but would it possible for the sounds be extended and for them to start just before he quickly turns.

I once tried adding audible Sith whispers at that precise moment. This would also create an instant relation between the whispers and the wayfinder for the audience, considering they later guide Rey to the dagger and the Emperor’s wayfinder.

I would like to hear him say something about preparing to meet him on Exegol.

As you mentioned as well, there is subtle ways of doing it, and I think with a tweak here and a tweak there, it could be accomplished.

Maybe one could extend or interpolate the shot where Palpatine turns to his advisors after dismissing Vader, and add some Palps dialogue there?

Yeah. it’s definitely an awkward choice. On the one hand, I don’t like taking things out that are officially good™. But here, maybe pacing and efficiency is gooder™?

It is probably worth preserving if the episode was split in 2, perhaps like the Cad Bane arc. But taking into account the full 3-part arc, I don’t think the overall action or pacing of the story is any worse by cutting it. Personally I’m fine whether it’s kept or removed, but there are my 2 cents.

I don’t intend to release alternate cuts - I’d like to have a set of one version of each episode, which people can select from based on personal taste - so if anyone really objects to losing the invisible fight they should shout now! Like I say, removing that was a suprise to me because I do kind of like it, but at the same time it’s not a value add and I think the episode a whole would be stronger without it - mostly because the episode already has so many scenes and events the it feels like “and then, and then, and then, and then”. It’s a great episode, it’s just denser than most.

I mean, the Dooku vs witches scene is great, its choreography is good and Dooku is a badass in it. But you’re right that it is the least necessary lightsaber action scene in an arc that is already loaded with lightsaber duels. It works great as a climax for the first episode but not as well for the combined chapters.

Grievous capturing Even Piell at the beginning of Citadel might work! You could even go further and have Grievous outright kill Eeth Koth and capture Piell because of his usefulness. (Even if Koth appears in other episodes he could be said to be his convenient lookalike Agen Kolar, and honestly the fact he mades it to the early Jedi Purge in comics doesn’t really impact that much). I might watch both Grievous Intrigue and the beginning of Citadel to get some ideas running.

I’m not entirely sold on turning around the chronology of Revival and Younglings, mostly because I liked seeing a Separatist victory whose effect was felt later in the series. But in any case you have the last word, you’re right the Maul stuff should be rolling around as early as possible, and the original TV airing released those episodes out of order to begin with, so it’s a minor thing.

Your own feedback seems pretty complete, I agree with most of your notes and there doesn’t seem to be any issue that’s been oversighted. I think cutting the invisible witches sequence could work (maybe you could release alternate cuts?), and I agree with moving the Yoda and Obi scene to after Maul is restored.

For Assassin, maybe you could cut one of the visions or merge the two, this way it would feel more like a one-off, specific disturbance in the Force much like Luke’s unseen vision in Empire Strikes Back.

  • The Deserter / Gregor (Droids in the Void) / Hidden Enemy / Grievous Intrigue: Do the first three work well as a “Lost clones” anthology? Do the first two work better as a Rex-focused duology? Does Grievous Intrigue paired with the Deserter give us a stronger episode overall? Does Grievous Intrigue work well elsewhere - perhaps interspliced with Cloak of Darkness, currently my weakest epiasode?

Honestly the action scenes in this episode are pretty good, featuring the Grievous/Obi-Wan duel that is pretty even. These could be part of the Grievous manhunt that is implied in your Season 1 opening texts.

  • Revival / Younglings arc: I need to see what I can do to flip the chronology of these without it breaking anything.

The key points of continuity between the early season 5 episodes (Revival, the Younglings arc and in a lesser capacity the Onderon arc) are the following:

  • Grievous sacking Hondo’s base in Younglings. Revival shows the base almost in ruins and full of wreckage, and Grievous is mentioned by Hondo as the culprit.
  • Hondo’s character model progression (from the early season-like Onderon arc Hondo and the greatly updated model for the other two arcs)
  • If Revival is shifted later it might solve at least a few of the issues arising from Adi Gallia’s death, namely her role in the Citadel arc.
  • Order 66 arc / The Last One (first Yoda arc episode): I wonder if these can be tied together, since in TLO Yoda is actively investigating O66.

An interesting thing that came up to my mind: in the Legends continuity, the last stage of the war, concurrent with the Outer Rim Sieges, involved the Jedi leading further investigations into the identity of Sidious, almost unmasking him if it weren’t for the battle of Coruscant. They even search Sidious and Dooku’s hidden meeting place at Coruscant, something that happens in vision form in TCW.

In Legends what triggers these investigations is an oversight by Gunray that provides evidence to the Jedi, but in your recut TCW it could be the incident with Fives or the revelation that Dooku=Tyranus and that he was involved in the creation of the clones. In the opening text for The Lost One you could state that the chip incident has led the Jedi to launch an investigation, leading up to Plo Koon discovering the place where Sifo-Dyas died.

I would like to give Palpatine his own scene in ROTJ, have him talking to one of his loyalists. Telling the loyalist to meet him on Exegol.

Take the scene where Palpatine is sitting looking out of the death star. Get a palpatine impressionist to say the line. Deepfake Palpatines mouth and we’re golden.
Also, Record someone dressed up as a Palaptine loyalist for the scene.

Since TROS came out my headcanon is that when Palpatine turns to his advisors after Vader leaves, he sends them to Exegol and that’s why they don’t appear again in the film. Therefore tying the Imperial advisors to the Sith loyalists, an idea firmly rooted in the wider canon.

RELEASED - SINS OF THE FATHER (BOBA FETT ARC) - RELEASE CUT

My production number 209, episode number TBD (early/mid season 2)

Notes as above. I also took out the weird line where Hondo implies that his species plus Aurra Sing’s species could have made a human kid. I only really took out the skeet scene from the first episode, but I could trim that further if people feel like that part is a bit slow.

PM for a link to the tracker.

Nooo! I always bursted out laughing at that line every time I watched that episode u.u

Just finished Maul. It works great. The beginning act works much better without the baggage of Savage’s rampage at the diner and the mandatory fighting with the natives and having it uninterrumped enhances the LOTR-feel and the mystery of the scene.

One of the changes I would want the most is replacing the Hayden ghost with one that isn’t as creepy. I would love Hayden’s ghost at the end to go with Hal’s TROS but he just looks so weird.

I’m really hoping for this too. Not only less creepy but also aged up.

Meant to post this right after I uploaded, but I didn’t.

A better attempt at editing the Victory Celebration song into RotJ, without the planets montage or Hayden Christensen.

So good! I’d totally buy it as the theatrical '83 version.

Nooo, I think I just got lucky. I have been thinking about this stuff for three and a half months straight now. Though it does go to show that you can’t over-plan for this stuff, you should always be ready to flex and change as new ideas come to light!

EDIT: Damn, it works even better in context than I’d thought! She goes and teaches the younglings JUST AFTER SHE’S SAVED A BUNCH OF YOUNGLINGS. She’s literally just had the experience of realising how important the future generations of Jedi are, so she immediately goes about starting to get involved in their training, setting her on the path which continues through Rebels with Ezra all the way through to Mando with Grogu. FFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK this was a really lucky get.

Really well thought!!!

Agreed! At least with the “I’m the Spy!” line cut, it doesn’t treat the audience like total idiots. They seem to keep adding little plot reminders throughout this trilogy, TLJ was extremely heavy on this “make for people with short attention spans”

So true. I’ve become more supportive of TLJ with each day that passes but it still bugs me that many instances of expositionary dialogue seem to underestimate their audience. TROS is equally guilty of this, though.

I am excited to see how this intersects with the High Republic material.

I’d love to see live action Buryaga

Yeah I really liked Burryaga’s arc in Light of the Jedi.

Even if this show is set from the perspective of the dark side, a few cameos or supporting parts played by known characters would be quite welcome.

When we get the “I’m the spy scene” from Hux.

If I could suggest an edit:

After we hear the shots and Poe and finn turn to look, instead of cutting to the stormtroopers and Hux then saying the line. Have the shots, the characters turn and then cut straight to Hux saying “we dont have much time”.

The characters look at the ground anyway, and it removes the dreadful exchange and it let’s us know everything we need to know and the humour ruins it. Its much better in my opinion.

Remember, Hux helped form Starkiller base, and having his reveal be a goofy one, it removes any form of seriousness.

I disagree. How else are Poe and Finn supposed to know that Hux is the spy? They’ll be confused as to why Hux just shot his own men.

The “What? You?!” reaction (and the later “I knew it!”, depending on whether it’s kept or not) would be enough to sell that. Some things don’t have to be explicit all the time.

EDIT: Just looking over their character bios, Stass Allie is actually super convenient, because they look almost identical (at least they would when downgraded from real life to TCW style) and Stass Allie doesn’t appear in TCW, so in my version, fine, she does. Replacing background Adi with background Stass doesn’t break canon at all outside of TCW, so that works nicely.

Sure, that could do it! It’s to be noted that Adi still has a fair share of close-up shots, speaking parts and mentions by name in some episodes, like the Citadel, where deleting her lines would affect the overall dialogues. Maybe you could increase the pitch of her voice to establish her as a different character (Stass Allie)?

I noticed one mention of master Ropal early in part 2 (2:48).

Part 2 works nicely, it’s a lot of package but it doesn’t drag. Much like part 2 the pacing is intense and makes for an entertaining duology. I honestly like master Ropal because his death scene is surprisingly dark, but I agree cutting him (and by extension, the second MacGuffin) makes for a more streamlined story.

If I were you I’d keep Lightsaber Lost, and place it after the Bane arc as originally planned (or maybe before Seven Warriors to fit Ahsoka having more maturity and initiative in that episode). LL is filler, sure, but works for me to give the sense Ahsoka is taking time away from the battlefronts, references her relationship with Jocasta and foreshadows both a) Ahsoka becoming more mature and b) teaching/guiding younglings.

Regarding the rest of your planned episode order I think its alright in a narrative sense. Personally I’d probably put the Return of Maul as the s2 “finale” and Maul piracy as a premiere of sorts for s3, much as the original arcs were. The only continuity “problem” that the Maul and pirates episode would cause by being placed so early is that Adi Gallia dies there but later appears in the background of many episodes where the Jedi council is involved (one could possibly pretend she’s her relative and lookalike Stass Allie but then again Yoda in the Voices arc unequivocaly remarks that she is dead).

Merging Holocron Heist and Hostage Crisis was a great idea and well-executed. It makes for a much more exciting and fast-paced conflict, besides improving some aspects like why does Palpatine seem so complacent during the Senate crisis.

Maybe the bit where Cad Bane is reaching Cato through the comlink could be trimmed further cutting the shot where we see Bane calling to her, mostly because in retrospective it becomes more noticeable than a shot from the later Jedi Temple sequence is used (and TODO is not present during any other Senate scene) and I’d say the scene would work and flow fine without that brief shot.

The only technical issue I noticed was a rogue frame of the fish bounty hunter laughing before it cuts back to Bane.

Now moving on to Part 2, great work as always Eddie, keep improving 😄
