I think that if we are to use shots of Coruscant from the prequels they’d need to get a First Order overhaul, flags, Ties, destroyers in the sky, colour correction, perhaps even air pollution.

We could draw inspiration from something like this:
https://youtu.be/dFG0YgxEN2M

I was wondering if we could create a moving version of this piece of concept art from Duel of the fates, https://starwarz.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/duel-of-the-fates-concept-art-8.jpg.
It could be used as an establishing shot for the board room scene in Tros, and with some vfx we could have explosions added to it at the climax of the film.

Seems like a great idea on paper (one of the things I liked the most about the scrapped Episode IX was revisiting Coruscant).

An easier change could be this: remember that establishing shot of Kylo and the Knights of Ren approaching the Steadfast in their respective ships? Maybe the background could be edited, so the three vessels are in the night atmosphere of Coruscant instead of outer space. The skyline of Coruscant could also be seen behind the windows of the Star Destroyer when Kylo addresses the officers.

And then, at the end of the movie, we see one or several FO Star Destroyers being destroyed over Coruscant city.

That way, without even changing existing dialogue, it’s implied the First Order has followed the footsteps of the Old Empire reclaiming Coruscant as the galactic capital. And this, along with the hypothetical Ajan Kloss/Naboo merging, serves as a final acknowledging of the prequel era.

jonh ok well we need you to be able to finish this so everyone should help to keep the scope of your scenes manageable. Then we can have a finished product soon. The force ghosts can just fade out as soon as Palpatine’s dead. The quarantine won’t last forever.

And nice work on the film for the telephone of the dead. I like how they put the guy saying “don’t fuck with me” into the trailer. Cool!

Quiet!! I hope to finish the edition this week!😃

I guess we shouldn’t be surprised to learn you’re a big-shot pro! Thanks for sharing that. We’re glad to have you around.

Do not do that! I get excited !! hahaha

Maybe you already said it and I got lost among all the posts, but are you considering an alternate version of your edit with Leia’s purple lightsaber?

The shield should line up with the lightsabers.

Yeah, I think keeping a subtle (but still noticeable) version of the shield might kind of handwave jokes/questions about why didn’t Mace Windu grab two lightsabers and downright disintegrate Palpatine’s face with the redirected lightning XD

Having Rey glow with a slight, ghost-y blue outline also conveys the idea that the Force spirits help her.

Change of plans.
I’m trying to re-add the first Falcon scene, and use it as the opening of the movie. Then cut to Rey’s training.
Kylo will find Palpatine later, just after the meeting with First Order officials.
Problem is… I don’t know how to start the movie after the camera pans down post-crawl. I tried a linear soft wipe from the starry background to Falcon-in-hyperspace, but I don’t really like it.
Any ideas?

Whatever solution you come up to for bridging the crawl with the hyperspace shot (I stand by Starkiller’s suggestion) I’m totally onboard with this. It would be strange for a Skywalker Saga film to not open with a starship. Even TLJ kept the tradition.

How do you plan to edit the First Order boardroom scene? Because half of the dialogue is about the fleet. Are you going to trim it, or pretend the FO knows about the rumored fleet and that encourages Kylo to go searching for it?

Yeah. Changing Ghost Hayden to his ROTS self would make it a lot more palatable in the first place.

For Episode IX, I believe a subtly aged Hayden is the best approach. The close-up of each Force spirits lasts a couple of seconds, at least in Jonh’s edits. If it’s not instantly recognizable for most it will cause more confusion than wonder from the audience (like a full-on Shaw approach might do). Or maybe try alternative versions of this particular scene, one with aged Hayden and one with Shaw, and have them co-exist, leaving the viewer to choose which one to download.

I agree on that the audio can be perfected, but as a preliminar concept it’s looking pretty great. I specially like the bit with Palpatine’s instructions and explaining the Force-dyad right from the beginning.

My nostalgic self kind of misses the “Dark side is a pathway to many abilities…” but I can see it not being really needed in this new context, specially with the “more than a clone, less than a man” piece reworked.

Revenge of the Sith (The New Canon Cut) [ON HOLD INDEFINITELY]
Time

(spoilers for The Clone Wars)
The second Siege of Mandalore episode just confirmed the events of Episode III occur in a span of a few days, no more than a week. At the start of the episode, the Battle of Coruscant has finished and Kenobi is already assigned to Utapau. That probably means that Ahsoka is fighting Maul at the same time Obi-Wan is fighting Grievous and Palpatine is telling the truth to Anakin.

So it’s great to see that Obi-Wan mentioning Ahsoka during briefing scene is backed up by the canon.

Also, what was Ahsoka referring to when she said to Obi “Tell Anakin…”? If that Ahsoka-Anakin interaction becomes a factor in the third chapter, could it be hinted at somehow in the fan-edit?

Hello! I had no intention of including more ghosts, but later if you want, I could do a version with more ghosts … but for now, I prefer to only include ghost for the original trilogy … I know, hayden is not from the trilogy original hahaha

It’s obviously up to you if you choose to make more alternative versions. It would be a nice treat for sure, but I’m more than pleased with the current version, so it’s fine if you leave it that way 😄

The ghosts look magnificent! If something like this played out at the climax I would have walked out very happy with the film in spite of its shortcomings. And honestly, the fact they’re all repurposed footage will fly over most people’s minds, even fans. It isn’t immersion-breaking, and in fact having the Jedi ghosts appear is what someone watching the film for the first time would reasonably expect after hearing their voices first (I did, at least).

Perhaps you could add a soft glowing blue outline to the Jedi for the close ups, yet keeping the actual ghosts subtle otherwise.

Also other suggestion for the “brighter edition” could be add more stills/silhouettes of some of the other Jedi force ghosts involved (Qui-Gon, Windu, etc.) in the far background for the wide shot. I agree with having only Anakin, Obi-Wan, Yoda and Luke in the forefront, but it could be a nice touch to acknowledge the secondary ones.

Hal, I remember you or someone else here thought of changing the music that plays over the ending Rey Skywalker/Binary Sunset scene, as to avoid repeating the Force theme across three movies. Have you though of putting some version of Rey’s theme instead? I believe it might be the most fitting, because it reaffirms Rey’s identity above all else, and is very much the central musical theme of the sequel trilogy. I personally like this track (originally from TFA end credits): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1bJpmMwrabo.
Not the full theme, but some snippets of it, like that transition between the Force and Rey’s motifs. If you plan to end the scene with a fade to black, maybe the peaceful version of the SW main theme that plays at the end of the track could could fit better instead of a more bombastic piece, as it has much of a “final farewell” feel to it.

So in this hypothetical version, Palpatine is dying, all this time he has been grooming Kylo and Rey, a prophesiced Dyad, to inherit the throne after his death. Palps gives the rundown to Kylo but he knows that there has to be a catch, he plays along and plans to kill him together with Rey. I think the dynamic between Kylo and Palps has to change, Palps will play the act of a weak, harmless old man, like the good old days with Anakin. Make Kylo less hostile, rather more intrigued. I’m working on a mockup that will go something like this:

  • At last! My boy.
  • Snoke trained you well.
  • I killed Snoke.
  • I made Snoke. I have been the voice inside your head.
  • The first Order was just the beginning, I will give you so much more.
  • You’ll die first.
  • I have died before, now I don’t have long, I’m weak - more than a clone, less than a man.
  • What could you give me ?
  • Everything - a new Empire, the might of the final order will soon be ready, It will be yours if you do what I ask.
  • Become what your grand father Vader could not! Find the girl, Turn her and bring her before me. Together you will rule the galaxy as emperor and empress. Two that become one. A dyad of the dark-side of the force.
  • Who is she ?
  • Our blood. (just my crazy headcanon)

It sounds great, at least on paper. This extra/modified dialogue exchange really makes the pieces fit better. I like reframing the relationship between Palps, Kylo and Rey, resolves the contradictions in Palpatine’s plan, and what’s even better, it establishes the concept of the Dyad from the beginning.

The Kylo redub is promising, maybe it’s not that hard to reframe the backstory through Kylo’s new dialogue, and this will be useful for both Rey Nobody and better-done-Rey Palpatine approaches. Of course, few things are more promising than a Hal/Poppa collaboration.

And I dig the new Force ghosts version, making the actual ghosts subtler looks better and less distracting.

The “colors of the Jedi” seems pretty interesting! Also it would be less distracting that having the actual Force ghosts appear (though I kind of wished for that to happen as well).

I also onboard with Green Mist Exegol. A couple of days ago I revisited the Son of Dathomir story (in audio-comic form) and remembered that Sidious used to exchange knowledge with the Nightsisters of Dathomir. That, and the fact that the witch Talzin’s resurrection very much parallels Sidious’ comeback (to the point both characters drain a powerful Force-user’s life force to restore their physical shapes). The greenish tint to Exegol could serve both to make the planet more interesting to look at, and serve as a fun Easter Egg (connecting it to the green-mist appearance of the Nightsister spells) that hints to the “unnatural dark side abilities” Sidious could have used to return.

It’s clear you’ll have more story details to choose from once the season finale is released and we know how the Siege of Mandalore plays out. It’s becoming increasingly likely that TCW ends after Order 66.
But I’m fully onboard with referencing the events of Mandalore during the briefing scene, even if mentioning Maul by name could feel out-of-nowhere (though that didn’t stop Solo from showing him). Sundari seems the most plausible choice.
