So is the idea that Rey modified Luke’s lightsaber to make it crackle? If so why would she do this? Sounds iffy like people have run out of things to edit on this movie.

The reason why Kylo’s blade appears crackly and serrated is because when Kylo turned it red, the kyber crystal that powered it cracked. It serves as a pretty good visual metaphor of Kylo’s own nature, unstable and volatile.

So, making the Skywalker blade also distorted serves two purposes:

  • continuity fixing. It acknowledges the ending of TLJ, where the lightsaber was split in half. Rey repaired it, but in an imperfect way, leaving the blade unstable as a result. The actual kyber crystal IS seen when Rey holds the pieces of the broken saber. So it’s less of a retcon and more of an actual consequence.
  • storytelling tool. Rey wielding a crackly lightsaber represents her inner conflict and her struggle with the dark side. It mirrors Kylo’s blade, and also serves as a subtle irony when Ben finally claims his grandfather’s weapon, but it’s damaged and imperfect.

The subject of kyber crystals, despite being a well-known staple of Star Wars lore is surprisingly absent from the movies, beingd developed in either The Clone Wars or canon novels. But I think a casual viewer that hasn’t dived into the EU could still associate the new appearance of the saber with the fact it was broken onscreen the previous movie.

Adding something like this to my Return of the Jedi edit, yay or nay?

I don’t think that’s necessary, the scene needs to stay a personal exchange between Anakin and Luke, adding more characters would break the mood of the moment. Unless you make it extremely subtle and short, like a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it shadow.

Prequel references that have been considered:

  • Fortress Vader (from Rogue One) added to the Mustafar minute.
  • Coruscant added in the background before the First Order council scene (suggested by Hal)
  • C-3PO mentioning Padmé or Anakin instead of Rey after having his memory restored.
  • C-3PO mentioning Moraband/Korriban when talking about Exegol (“the place where the Sith hid after the fall of Korriban…”)
  • Hint to the Sith Troopers being clones.
  • Rey’s power explained by a vergence in the Force (suggested for Rey Nobody editions)
  • Sith whispers guide Rey to the Wayfinder (done by Hal)
  • Leia purple saber (done)
  • Green mist added to Palpatine’s surroundings and green Force-draining effect to imply a connection with Nighsisters/Sith magic.
  • (Radical) Turn Ajan Kloss into Naboo (mock-ups done by snooker)
  • Familiar aliens (Twi’leks, etc.) rotoscoped in the background of some scenes as extras (the whole trilogy was lacking in this aspect).

Non-prequel references but rather Canon fixing minor edits

  • Cut “They fly now!” (done)
  • Have Zorii say Poe left her to join the New Republic, instead of the Resistance.
  • Not referring to Endor as the place where the Galactic Civil War ended.

Score edits:

  • Duel of the Fates chanting for the “ritual” moment on Exogol.

I believe the music is more emotional and transitions best to the credits the way it is right now, ending with Rey’s theme. That piece of Rebel fanfare that follows doesn’t really scream finale (unless you go with the Falcon crew shot idea), and ends in a somewhat dissonant note.
The center of the epilogue is the end of Rey’s arc. The music should reflect that, and Hal’s current version sounds as appropiate closure.

In my preference headcanon Anakin takes the form of a visibly aged-up Hayden Christensen, mostly because of my stick-to-continuity approach, but I don’t really like the SE version of Hayden in ROTJ. He looks creepy and detached from the other characters in the scene.

I’d say keep SE Hayden for the moment, but hopefully it won’t be long before we have a seamless, “jonh-level” quality rendering of a Hayden-based Anakin force spirit.

Although, while a shot LIKE that would be nice, that particular shot doesn’t particularly scream end of movie. Rey doesn’t look emotional either.

I agree, that shot feels too active, it gives off a “time for another adventure!” vive, which is what it originally is, instead of a finale. And Rey loses all the emotion from the “Rey Skywalker” moment.

The chess scene works in a better, more subtle way to show that Rey’s friends travel with her. I much prefer the current, simpler ending. It puts the focus on Rey and the Skywalkers, and ends with just the Falcon riding off into the (binary) sunset. Classic!

+1

Though the Skywalker ghosts watching the Falcon/sunrise as an ending shot is a neat idea!

In your version, the deleted scene should ideally be placed somewhere before Anakin’s first nightmare. The political stance of the Jedi regarding Palpatine needs to be established early in the film.

When Anakin and Obi-Wan land at Coruscant after the battle, Obi-Wan mentions he’s going to meet with the Council. Maybe the Yoda/Windu/Obi-Wan talk could be inserted there, before or after Grievous arrives on Utapau. You may need a new Jedi Temple establishing shot to add immediately before the deleted scene, this way the musical transitions between scenes would be less jarring.

I’ve made some tweaks to my AOTC edit to fix up some of the transitions and some additional minor changes. In case this wasn’t picked up on before, it’s now available.

I’ve been working on my ROTS edit. I’ve been considering some other minor dialogue trims, added another deleted scene and of course Padme’s new death is still in the works. I’ve been considering adding the deleted scene in which Obi-Wan, Mace and Yoda talk about their suspicions about Palpatine for the same reason others do, to show that the Jedi are onto Palpatine from the beginning, but I haven’t completely decided yet. I’d be interested in hearing input from others.

I happened to stumble upon this video and I’m considering editing this idea into my TPM edit. I like it as it makes the music more unique when it’s reprised in ROTS, and I think it’s very fitting for the scene. What do you guys think?

A couple months ago I was inspired by the “New canon cut” and gave a try to reinserting the council deleted scene, but I cut Yoda’s last line so he can say it later during hologram briefing scene later in the film. Here, he just (reluctantly) nods.

I like that funeral rescore btw!

Was there a conclusion of TIEs having Hyperdrives? I’m constantly getting into arguments online about this as I really don’t like the lightspeed skipping scene but there is also this https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/TIE/sf_space_superiority_fighter

Special forces TIEs do have hyperdrives. It was implied in TFA that this was an upgraded model of TIE fighter, since it had two seats and Finn planned to leave the system on it.

I like this particular scene better with no TIEs entering hyperspace, though!

And can somebody make a video explaining this in a less obnoxious way?

Summing it up, they reused the same fight scene twice, but using different angles and adding different VFX to the first one to make it different from the second one (the intended-as-original).

Damn, now I won’t be unable to unsee it :´(

Here’s an idea, I know jonh said he made a final edit on the Force ghosts guiding Rey in killing Palpatine, but would it be possible to edit Sebastian Shaw from Jedi into it in place of Hayden for a second?

I like Hayden, don’t get me wrong, but I was thinking if Obi-Wan can go back and forth on his age can’t Anakin do it too?

I remember jonh did acknowledge the possibility of featuring Shaw, but dismissed it for the moment because of the lack of decent footage in comparison to Hayden. Shaw could be doable but it would stick out, compared to the almost seamless look of the other Jedi.
Still, he did “age” Hayden’s appearance making him look middle-aged.

I guess that transitions into the bed shot nicely, but still, why?

Toying with the idea of adding more intimacy. ROTS is only 6 months after ATOC and she gives birth in ROTS. So it gives more time together instead of. They kiss and then get married. Theres not a lot of connection for them, especially going into the climax of ATOC.

Last time I checked the Clone Wars were supposed to take place in a span of three years…

Could the current cut simply work with both removed TIEs at the end of the chase, and keeping the lightspeed skipping banter afterwards?

I don’t think we actually need to see the fighters following the Falcon to explain why it’s on fire the next time we see it.

Edit: yeah it would be great to have a new FX shot where the TIEs veer off after they lose the Falcon.

Yeah, I’m actually ok with Option 2; keeping Rey scolding Poe could make a hypothetical audience member think that “lightspeed skipping” simply means a hasty jump to hyperspace (without careful calculations, etc) and that is what got the Falcon in bad shape . After all Poe just goes and activates lightspeed right as the ship smashes against the ice wall. In that case, I don’t know if keeping the TIEs following the Falcon into hyperspace is strictly necessary, though it’s okay if it’s done this way since it’s established those special TIEs do have hyperdrives.

Man, I wish it were at all feasible to have all of you over or rent a theater or something and have 9 to 11 Saturday nights in a row for a viewing of this whole thing. With popcorns, prizes, drinks, and an anonymous ‘Apples to Apples’ style game of drafting innuendo lines from each movie. Possibly even video games, like a mini-tournament of N64 Racer.

I’ve thought a few times of getting myself a Hal9000 shirt just for such an impossible occasion.

This is the way

Yeah my two cents go for either Corellia or Naboo.

I like Corellia because it’s the closest way to acknowledge a EU planet. And Naboo because it seems the idea of retconning Ajan Kloss to be Naboo has fallen by the wayside, and there’s that pretty good Theed Palace night shot that could serve, bringing more visual variety to the montage. As a small bonus for those who have prequel fan-edits as headcanon, the Naboo night scene where it comes from is cut in several fan-edits, so in a way it wouldn’t stick out as a reused shot 😄

And I agree Coruscant could serve as a nice treat for the boardroom scene (RogueLeader’s idea is worth trying). I don’t remember if the movie outright states that the First Order is politically controlling the galaxy (even if it’s the most evident outcome of TLJ). Having Coruscant at least would imply that being the case.

The TLJ beginning is fine. I like that it kept one of the oldest Star Wars tropes, that is, always opening with a planet and at least one spaceship.

It may be the best way to connect the scorched forest to a more familiar Mustafar, without having to recycle a Rogue One shot.

Sure, if there’s some way to convey the peoples of the galaxy are under a oppresive FO regime and have this being their primary motivation to join the battle at Exegol, instead of just being cowardly/lazy until Lando charms them out of it. Maybe you could use some shots of FO Destroyers over planets for your Palpatine broadcast montage.

This may be extra-difficult, but what about digitally-editing a establishing shot to include Vader’s castle in the far background? This could make the planet a bit more recognizable for those who watched Rogue One. Or perhaps reusing the lava/smoke shot from RO, with some color correction and the shuttle replaced by TIEs/troop landing craft, to extend the intended establishing sequence following the First Order from atmosphere to surface (much like TFA). Though, since I like the game shots, maybe my suggestions are biased towards featuring them as part of this sequence.

Hal, in the event you cut the video game footage altogether, at least keep the TIEs flying shot. Every added second is worth it.
