Yeah, the Rancor needed help. Leaving that really made the SE seem more "unfinished" than what Lucas claimed the OT was. Jimbo, the Ewok song ruled. I have the original OST cassette, trust me, the film barely features it. My mom pointing out its absence is what made me think over the SEs(before, all I cared was that I got to see the trilogy on the big screen). I just don't get why people hate it so. Its barely in the film, and much better than "singing Ewokese"(according to the captions) being heard on Coruscant. That makes no sense.

Nope, I live in sunny Northern California. I saw the film back at my local anime convention Fanime 2002. Some friends I had made convinced me to see it when they told me that one of my favorite voice actresses (Miyamura Yuko) had a cameo. I really enjoyed it, and while different from the book in some respects(mostly streamlining for 2 hour film constraints) I think its excellent.

Obtaining a copy is actually easy if you know what to look for and where. First off, assuming you want subtitles, you'll have to get a bootleg. Normally, I'm against this, but the Japanese distributor refuses to let it be licensed last I heard. I hear the best is the DC 2-disc set. Anamorphic widescreen, I think DTS(5.1 DD at least if not) and so on. Unfortunately, even at Fanime it will run you about 30 bucks. You can also go my route. I have it on VCD currently. Use DC++ or bittorrent to get a subtitled copy. If I can, I can link a site that carries it for BT (I'm on a few forums that frown on such links). They currently have the Directors Cut and the sequel. Basically, you can thank my anime obsession for knowing of these sites(funny thing is, this particular site, like Kazaa lite, was featured on TechTV, and its pretty shady, which I find amusing).

I picked up Mara Jade: By the Emperor's Hand, which was wonderful, and now I'm waiting for the Dark Empire Trilogy to come in for me through ILL at my library. Of course, I still have to finish The Thrawn Trilogy and then a number of others (Shadows of the Empire, Han Solo Trilogy, I, Jedi, etc.), and then maybe I'll be able to get to the NJO. My problem is that while I'm wanting to read all of this Star Wars material, there's also too much else that I'm wanting to read.

What are everyone's thoughts on the whole issue of canon? Hope I'm not starting violent discussion...

I know what you mean. I still am in the middle of The Return of Tarzan(if you've never read the works of Burroughs, add it to your list), The Illiad, The Odyssey, several mangas, The Castle of Lyrr, I started 1984, and need to finish Battle Royale. Those are just what I remember reading. I'm a gemini, and I've also been diagnosed with (the fictional disorder) ADHD. My attention switches often. However, I can keep track of several things at once.

As for the EU canon, I love it. The novels add so much depth to the saga. Plus, all the books tie in, unlike the Star Trek one. I've read some great ST books, only to have the ideas in them crushed by a new episode or movie. The books try to tie in, the series doesn't. The short story collections really do add to the films as well. Characters that had little screen time now are fully part of the story. Like how the Stormtrooper that said, "Look sir, droids" saved Han Solo's life and so on. It puts a lot into perspective. I haven't read many of the comics though with the exception of the Dark Empire series.

My cousin told me that Hutt's skin changes rapidly until a certain age. Still, for something that took them a year to do(according to period interviews) it was rather awful. The coloration was wrong, his arms were wrong, and he looked completely phoney. Also, the scene is completely superfluous to the story. Jabba just repeats what Greedo says. It's so similar, I got the feeling Greedo was added to make up for Jabba being cut. It also make little sense that Jabba would see Han himself. Usually, he'd send a man named Heater(I think, I know Hearter wored for him, it's been awhile) to stand in for him, sense the guy was so ugly, and most people had never seen a Hutt.(That kind of got thrown out the window in TPM). So, given the bad effects, it might have been better just to redub Solo so he doesn't say "Jabba" anymore.(if I remember, it was Heater that met him in the radio dramas). It shouldn't be hard sense they removed the "Yes" from "Yes, I bet you have".

As for the "excellent" ships, part of the reason I hated the SE is because the SFX are below ILM's efforts. They're just too half-assed. The changing windows in ESB, the cartoonish CGI characters, and the reused models in the Yavin battle. Look at the X-wings in that battle. When they're coming up to the Death Star, look them over. You'll notice that they all have the same number of stripes on the wing, the same astromech droid, and rust in the same places Would it have been that hard to scan more than one or two models. That's how it's normally done. Every X-wing was a different model in the original. All ILM did in 97 was change the stripe on a few. They also forgot to fix that fact that Luke gets into a X-wing with a solid stripe, yet flys one with a broken stipe in battle. Sure, they had little more then a year to do it, but all the materials were premade. Lucas saved everything. I could understand if it were from scatch but it wasn't. Two monthes before the SE came out, Star Trek: First Contact had beautiful SFX by ILM. Did Lucas only put part of his team to work on the SE's? They look more like the group that represents ILM recently, where groups like Weta and Digital Domain have been exceeding them. Not the top quality we're used to from ILM. Why would Lucas leave something that's supposed to "fix" his movies up to such a shoddy performence. I just don't get it. If its suppose to improve, why are there new errors? An incorrect Jabba, unfinished changes, X-wings taking off next to an outpost that's supposed to be far away. A new battle establisment shot that makes it look like the Death Star is right in front of Yavin 4's moon. Not to mention all the errors that were left, like the lightsabers, the incorrect Death Star Plans, and the Rancor's matt line. It just didn't look like the work of ILM, nor like something that was supposed to "improve" something once and for all. They looked even more unfinished.

Of course, some interviews suggested that the SE was simply an excuse to test out new techniques for the PT, or just to pique interest in the re-release. The latter isn't really founded, but the former was stated as a reason. ILM is the fore-runner of special effects. Only James Cameron's Digital Domain and Peter Jackson's Weta Workshop and Weta Digital even come close to them in quality. Given the amount of work they get, I doubt they needed the OT to flex their muscles. I don't know about you, but I don't think I like the idea that the OT was merely a testbed for special effects. It really gives the impression that it's all about special effects in the end. Silly me, I though it was about story and character.

Sorry for the tirade. Sometimes these things get in my head and I have trouble writing them down. Just my opinions on somethings. Lucas can do what he wants as long as he gives what some of the fans want. It wouldn't hurt if he put more effort into things as well.

The New Jedi Order - book series
Time
That's actually where I am at the moment. I started when Vector Prime came out, read through Dark Tide, than stopped as I fell out of Star Wars. I recently read the next two, and am now on Balance Point, but again have fallen into other things. I'm painfully behind on my SW reading for the first time since I began. I'd discuss, but I've had way too many spoilers for that series at the moment.

Point 1: Boba Fett- Originally was a man banished from the planet Concord Dawn. Now, he's a clone copy of the same man used as the template for the stormtroopers??

To be fair, his identity was never truly confirmed. Under my understanding, Jaster Mereel(sp) turns out to be a mentor of Jango in the Mandorlorian way. Boba claims his armor. As for the clones, it would explain why their's a man running around guised as Fett.

Quote

Point 2: Clones- This is slightly more dependant on EP3, but where are the Spaarti Cloning Cylinders?? For that matter, who/what are Spaarti??

True. Possibly something that isn't created until after the Clone Wars(I was a bit surprised the clones are fighting for the Republic)

Quote

Point 3: Ships- Again, this is more dependant on EP3, but where are the Dreadnaughts, Alderaanian War Frigates, Republic TIEs, Z-95 Headhunters?

Very true, again, we shall see. Naturally, you can't throw every reference in. I doubt we'll hear of the Dathormirian Witches. I'd still like to see Corellia and especially Alderaan myself. Also, the construction of the Imperial Palace might be nice.

Quote

Point 4: Events- I'm hoping we get some mention of Thrawn and/or the Outbound Galaxy Project. So many have said that Lucas likes the Zahn Trilogy best, that it holds truest to the spirit of Star Wars, yet Lucas has yet to do anything that shows that the Zahn books fit into his own story.

I too would love even a throw-a-way reference to the Outbound Galaxy Project. Maybe a brief shot of Thrawn that only fans can pick out, we won't know though.

Galahad_Skywalker, here's my suggestion. Finish the Thrawn trilogy, it's what got me started. After that, either finish the Corellia trilogy, or put it on hold and read the excellent X-wing saga. It details the warlord age, the fall of Coruscant, and follows Wedge and Rouge Squadron instead of Luke and Leia. It's written by two authors, my favorite of which is Michael Stackpole(his short story in Tales from the New Republic with Zahn [my other fav SW author] is a must read). The series also introduces my third favorite EU character, after Mara and Thrawn, Corran Horn. Other great character's developed from the series are Tycho Celchu(sp), an Alderaaning, Ysanni Isard, the main vilian of the piece, and the Terrick family(Booster, the man with his own Star Destroyer).

What I'm really trying to say is this; hold off on the New Jedi Order for as long as you can. I've only read five of the series, but its impact will be largely dependant on your knowledge of the characters involved. Most of the books are excellent reads, though don't worry much about getting to the Barbara Hambly books, or the Black Fleet Crisis. I didn't enjoy them that much.

That's how I feel. The EU helps one appreciate the OT and PT as a whole. Lucas was also limited by the EU so I'm sure being familar with them helps. I actually haven't gotten to Cloak of Deception yet. I kind of fell out of Star Wars while reading The New Jedi Order. Basically, lack of a community to interact with(I don't visit TF.N[I always prefer Jedinet.com] nor do I recieve the Insider anymore), coupled with falling into anime kind of switched gears on me. This happens from time to time. Since joining these boards, I've been swinging back into Star Wars at the moment. Which books have you read, by the way? I've read most except for the majority of TNJO and the prequel novels with the exception of Rogue Planet.

SpyderX, you may have just restarted this thread. We all know that Jimbo sees these as "improvements". We do not. End of story. As for the scream, one person wrote somewhere that Luke's fall w/out screaming was the moment he became a jedi in their eyes. He accepted his fate. The scream ruined that. Also, VHS stereo benifits over DVD due to lack of compression. I only have the 92 realease(and what's left of Dad's ps SE set). The 92 set always sound fine, from a stereo POV.

I'm curious how people's views on the PT(or even the OT and SE ) differ if ones more familar with the novels. I've read most of the novels, and enjoy them. One of my bigger concerns out of the PT being good films is that they mesh well with the EU. So far they have. As such, I'm no stranger to Coruscant, double bladed lightsabres and so on. Does anyone feel that the prequels are better enjoyed from the big picture view, or are they better when only knowing the films(a viewpoint I don't have)?

Idea: Preserving the 1997 Special Editions of the Star Wars Original Trilogy on DVD-R
Time
I currently only have the 1992 PS set. I also taped ESB and ROTJ in widescreen off the Sci Fi channel. Mr. Coffee, I sypathize with you. I've long had a problem with digital things that I've only recently gotten over. Basically one to many asses rubbing the format into my face, coupled with having no problem with video outside of lack of widescreen. Also, tapes just survive better in my hand than easily-scratchable discs. I hated being forced into the formats, but widescreen and anime has made it a moot point.

As for preserving the SE, I've never liked it since ROTJ was in theatres. However, since the whole point of this site is preserving the version we love most, it seems natural to preserve the SE for those who, for some reason or another, prefer it.

I think I read that he had to re-record some sounds. Personally, while I'm not against remixes for those that want them, I always watch the original mix if its available. Often it's not, like when Manga Ent released The End of Evangelion. You had DTS 6.1, DD 5.1 and a remixed stereo from the 6.1 in both languages. Sadly, the original stereo mix(which the director insisted on) wasn't included. I bought the sub video. ^_^

my thoughts on originals vs SE...
Time
I too agree. Part of the reason I loved the films so much is the dedication that was put into the model work. I'm still awed by the effects in Jedi, the stop motion in Empire, and all the other details they did. I saw Spiderman 2 the other day, and John Dykstra continues to prove that he still has an eye for things. If anything, George should at least go the Star Trek I route. Every shot that was replaced was put in anamorphic widescreen on the DVD. The documentry goes so far as to say that they only finished what wasn't, and that they respected the work that went into it. At least this way, they're work is preseved. Lucas' current attitude is along the lines of, "who cares what they did". Which is sad, as I use to respect the guy much more than I do now. Welcome to the forum, though I'm a newby here myself.

Isn't that the truth. I remember him saying he complained about the films in every interview. I've seen quite a few of the pre-SE interviews. All he complained about was the cantina not having enough aliens. He then said he made up for it in ROTJ. Then there's my favorite. The statements that Star Wars is about characters and reimagining the old seriels he loved. Post 97 George- "I lied, it was about cool special effects the whole time, models suck."

Rick McCullum - "The essence of the storytelling had to be sacrificed due to the limits in technology". Bull, I'm sure the trilogy truly "suffered" lacking the redundant Jabba scene, the pointless Vader shuttle scene, and the goofy dance number.
