Did George Lucas take too much credit?
Time
GL was and still is a great IDEA guy, he has an immense imagination, that at times is stagering. He is, however, very poor and bring those ideas to fruition in an entertaining fashion. If you need to see what i mean, just watch the empire of dreams doc. In the casting clips you here all sorts of jubbled, long winded dialogue, some of which made it into the film, some that did not. Obviously some of the less disireable dialogue was cut/altered/replaced because it is no where in the films. Another example is in ESB, the "i know" line by han was improvised on the set by harrison and Irvin Kershner, something that GL would have never allowed if he would have been at the helm. The best thing that happened to star wars was the forced absenteeism by GL in ESB and ROTJ, plus his openess in ANH. This allowed awsome input from various sources that really polished SW and made the OT the classic movies that everybody loves. His tight fistedness is what has ruined the PT. In my opinion the PT could have been saved if he would have allowed input in the same way...

So who the f#@k is that long haired kid grinning like an idiot in the DVD version? Anakin? If it is, why isn't Ben's character look like Ewan MacGreggor? Am I nuts (distinctly possible)?

Obi-wan was good until death. Which is why he still looks old. Anakin Skywalker died when he became Darth Vader. "Then my father is truely dead"

BUT later vader tells luke that he was R-I-G-H-T. How luke saved him already, tell you sister, blah blah blah blah... You cant save something that was already dead...

if i have a dollar for every edit lucy boy didnt think through i might have more money than him...

But without some actual usage in the movie, that's all it turned to be, "pretentious film student" name dropping.

i am not convenced that there isnt meaning behind all of the name dropping. Though one may never know the original intentions of the W brothers.

See i hated the first movie, it was simply plato regurgitated with [sarcasm] completely awesome outfits, and wonderful special effects [/sarcasm]. Further more i cant stand matrix fan culture. But i loved the last two movies, it left me pondering for weeks all the implications of the various alagories and simbolism. Not to mention the vast array of historical, philosophical, and religious name/likeness dropping.

I hate lothe wouldnt piss on them if they were on fire the Prequels, but the matrix trilogy is by no means a bad saga, most people just get confused when the watch them and miss the overall point (it takes a cetain kind to enjoy them*) But comparing any matrix film to casablanca is a bit um... well say strecting their worth.

* this is not to say that ones intellegence has anything to do with the enjoyment of the Matrix films. It is more the way people think. Highly concrete thinkers would not enjoy the matrix movies nearly as much as a more abstract thinker. It is a matter of intelectual taste rather than intellegence...

The PT was doomed from the opening crawl and here is why

I dont think he lost anything... I think he never had it...

Look at all the other successfull projects, they all had an enourmass amounts of input from a myriad of other people. GL is a wonderful idea guy with a spectacular imagination. But he has never been a great script righter or polisher of ideas. In the o-ot he was greatly distracted by battles with the studio, the sag, and various other hollywood entities, leaving room for other to polish his ideas.

That's why when I watched these Prequels, I think to myself.. "whydid Lucas make these, as Anakin is not interesting enough to support one movie, let alone three."

There's a theory that a movie only works if you show the story of character at the most critical, most interesting and most compelling moment, and for my money, Darth Vader defined that moment, and Anakin is just a boring and useless character. The Original Trilogy is the story of Luke's ascension to a Jedi, and Darth Vader's antagonism, redemption and eventual death. We really didn't need a backstory, as Darth Vader represented a more interesting character and arc, than does Whiney Ani.

The prequels are kind of like watching home movies of Barry Bonds as a toddler, while the Original Trilogy is his record-breaking home-run year.

I couldnt disagree with you more on this. Sure the PT is complete crap as it stands, but that is not to say that a redone version of the story line would be the same. There is a lot of room for the back story to be great, it has just been done completely wrong. If Gl would have allowed the same amount of input he did with the first three(O-OT), we probably would not be as negative about the whole things. Anikin was supposed to be a hero that fell, and shattered the galaxy in turn. Lots of plot, lots of character development, lots of action, lots of everything you need for a great movie. GL just messed it up big time...

Agreed on the needed run time for ROTS. The clone wars just started at the END of AOTC, there is so much to cover. But we all know gl will drop the film at the same length as all the others, he is OCD in the editing room.

As for Vaders comment i have always thought that it refered to Obi thinking vader could be turned back. Doesnt vader say that part of him is dead or something? Then at the end of ROTJ Vader requests that luke tell his sister that he was right, and how luke has already saved him... I have never understood it to mean that obi misunderstood the nature of the force... could be wrong though i suppose...

the Godfather. With the Godfather II the stories are enterlaced with one another, and you see the progression of Vito Corleone. The reason this works is because the story is told in flashbacks while the story countinues in current time as well. I would be all for showing so sort of flashbacks telling the back story of anikien through out Ep. 1. If done right it would be very compelling and add much to Anakin as a character. But as it stands now i view it as wasted screen time.

"I'll try spinning! That's a neat trick!" (I hope I never watch that scene while going through a deep depression, or it might send me over the edge.)

dont forget the also painful "IT'S WORKING!!!, IT'S WORKING" "Are you an angel?" or any random ani(which by the way is a horrible name makes me think he was at one time a red head running around with daddy warbucks.)

but that nonsence is nothing compared to Ani's elloquence when it comes to the women in AOTC... Yikes what a stocker...

The biggest issue in my mind with the PT is that TPM starts when anikin is nine/ten. The kiddy themes that are introduced to the saga way down the more heavy elements to come. TPM would have been much more affective with Aniken being a normal padawan at 17 facing the trials at the beginning of the first movie. Anakin could already have a accomplished great deeds and have a developing reputation. A 17 yr old anankin far aged far beyound his years, brave, wise, humble. The character could have been set up as a true hero, with all the classical character traits that one would attach to a true hero. Lucas tried too hard to make him a mystical figure, virgin birth and all. We never see Anakin that was anything near heroic or that should true character. Instead we see a annoying little kid, and a moody teen. When anakin falls in ROTS i wont care, no one will. The character that has developed so far is anything but relatable. By shifting the age of anakin, and erasing the nonsense created by TPM GL could have developed a character that people wanted to cheer for, a character people wanted to cry for, and most importantly a character that the audience could have sorrow/pitty for when fate turns anakin into vader. Luke, Han, and Leia all had this going for them in the o-ot. Heck even vader has it going by the end of ROTJ. Who amongst us wasnt stongly effected by the final battle scene where Vader saves his son and defeats the emporer?

gl greatest error was trying to make the movie kid friendly, instead of making it apeal to the kid in all of us...

sorry for all the gramatical and spelling errors in this, i am lazy, and sorry if this has all been covered before.

Obi-Wan's Krayt Dragon call changed on DVDs
Time
Excuse me the Ewok Song Change is a GOOD ONE!!!!

But in all seriousness i hate the new song as well as all the new shots of various planets. I grew up with that song and because of that the og ewok song has been embedded into my psychy. Put it back Luca$ put it back... Besides wouldnt it take months for the remnants of the empire to crumble. Sure the top two are done, and so is part of there navy, but it isnt like the rest of the empire would simply melt away(there would have to be some sort of power struggle amoungst the other mofs) and people all over the galaxy would simply run out there homes and celebrate. Besides the rebels were in no position to completely whipe out the remnant...

GL you make my butt sting, i lothe you...

I am glad that i knew about this before seeing the RSE's(which i still havent seen), cause if i would have seen that crap at the end and it been a surprise i think i would have lost it. Who knows what meyham would have insued in my living room...

there are no words to properly communicate my frustration with this mess GL has made of what used to be such glorious films...
