Thought on de-SE'ing the DVD

If that's the case, then why not use the 5.1 AC-3 from the SE LD's?

Let me see... one, two... three... four. Five? Yeah, I think that's right. I've got five hard drives connected. I believe one is just 80GB, three are 120GB, and one's 160GB.

Half a TB, and still I run out of space. Using HuffYUV and TooT efficiently sucks back free space like you wouldn't believe. So does keeping the results of failed experiments, and things you know are obsolete but haven't had time to go back and fix.

The next drive I buy (and it shouldn't be for a while, I hope) will be 200GB or better. Yikes. I remember my first IBM clone: a 286, which had a 20MB hard drive!

Really, two 80GB drives should be ample. But to paraphrase whoever it was (the Duchess of Windsor?), you can never be too rich or have too much drive space.

Me. I have everything that was broadcast. (Note: Ep 4 was never broadcast by Fox.)

Yeah, they're all OAR. The only thing I have that isn't OAR is Ep 2, which is a native 1080i 16:9 crop.

I don't see why -- the German DTV or Fox TS captures are far, far better. In my opinion, there is no point in capturing any part of the SE from LD anymore.

What are you using Karyudo, a BT-878 card?

Nope. It's a Philips SAA7133-based card. The 7133 is actually a newer (ergo maybe better, despite similar specs on paper?) chip than the 7118 that's used in the card that Laserman's using -- but as we all know, it's not just the chip that's important, it's the implementation. Or maybe not: it is not clear whether it's the card or the player that's doing a poor job in the comb filtering department. In fact, since it's not perfect I think we know it's at least partially the player.

The 925 converts the video signal to digital pretty early on (8-bit ADC, compared with the Philips' 9-bit) and then eventually runs it through the now-obsolete Sony CXD2024 8-bit, three-line (cf. Philips' 9-bit, 4-line PAL) comb filter. That looks to be downstream of other stuff such as the frame store. Ideally, it would be nice to grab the video signal just before it's converted to digital, and output it as composite -- maybe using a little daughter card add-on to the 925? I hope it's not some pipe dream, but might actually be possible.

I know, and I'm sorry. I don't know quite what's wrong. I thought it was Azureus, but maybe not. It contributes, but maybe it's Java? Arrgh. Don't know. All I know is that it'll run fine for a while (not even sure how long), and then my Internet connection dies. Nothing in or out, including e-mail, newsgroups, web, or BT. So I poke around, reboot, and everything's fine again for a little while. Until it's not.

Like I've said, though: if it becomes necessary, I'll mail you some DVD-Rs. I said I'd finish (somehow...) and I will.

You didn't?! Oh, the horror! OK, just kidding. But I have just about every NTSC disc available, and I think the Japanese 'Faces' discs are the nicest. I could just be being sucked in by the different IRE setting (i.e. 0 vs. 7.5), but I don't think so.

Ideally you'd have capped three different sets of discs and used TooT, too. Still, the raw X0 cap will be very nice by itself.

Yeah, sorry about that. I will be back, but I have to sort out some unexpected problems first. I went to quickly update Azureus, and now things are messed up. Haven't had time to un-mess-up.

If all else fails, I'll mail you a DVD-R.

Moral of the story: never upgrade "quickly".

The French and German (and presumably Spanish -- those discs were made in France) versions all come from the same transfer. However, the side breaks between the French and German transfers are different, so all the frames are present between the two versions. Except (maybe) for any frames "missing" between film reels, since this is a different telecine transfer from the NTSC version.

@ RB/facehead:

I ran out of space on my drive un-RAR'ing the Surprise Torrent, so I took SW down. But yeah, I'll still have Empire and Jedi up on Monday (and beyond). Don't panic! I'll keep an eye out for what you're up to, and I'll make sure you get those two things before I retire from the Isomix seeding biz.

Just took a look at the Phantom Re-Edit 1.2 (Magnolia Fan), and I'm sort of disappointed. The video quality is good, but not great. The audio quality is passable, not great. I guess I'm not aware of just how crappy the VHS was, maybe, because this doesn't exactly stun me with its "DVD re-edit" brilliance. I'm glad I downloaded it, but I doubt I'll watch it again and again or anything. I haven't watched MagFan's own reworking of Eps I and II yet (DVDs should be in the mail, I hope?), but the chit-chat about them seems to indicate I'll enjoy those more.

@RB:

My personal advice? If you haven't started the Surprise Torrent by now, don't! Wait until it's not a surprise. I suspect what will happen is that a whole bunch of us will finish, the password will be published, we'll un-RAR the thing, burn it, and delete the original RAR -- thus dropping the traffic to near-zero. Once the surprise is not a surprise, then there should be a new torrent that isn't a RAR, and has an NFO, etc. Or, I guess some people will have to keep it as a RAR? I think these post-surprise scenarios haven't been thoroughly thought-out. We'll see, though, I guess!

I dunno how much longer I will want to keep seeding for the Isomix trilogy, but I will certainly keep it going as long as it takes for you to finish, RB.

I apologize for the direct link! I didn't know that meant to the tracker page; I was thinking it was the actual, downloadable torrent that was against the rules. Now that I think about it more, it's my bad.

As for complaints, I'm not exactly complaining (I'm downloading the torrent, after all), but things aren't quite working out efficiently this way. And I'm glad to hear this isn't HS-related. I would have been really upset if this torrent has anything to do with that damn Holiday Special. I got one copy about two years ago, and that's about all anyone needs!

I must say, I think it's rather bad form to promote something "surprise" -- even going so far as to RAR the thing so nobody can see what it is -- and then stop seeding. Now there are about 60+ people hovering at about 25% done, with no guarantee it's going to continue anytime soon. I'm sure there's a logical reason, and I'm not getting all huffy just yet, but in general this sort of "surprise" thing is not a good idea. Even at Christmas.

Just fantasising about how the ultimate LD transfer could be produced. Come on experts, what do you think?

Discs
LD enthusiasts reckon that discs pressed at Pioneer Japan are generally better quality than those from Pioneer USA, so would the best discs be the Japanese "faces" set?

I'd give "Discs" an importance weighting of 50%. If the Japanese 'Faces' are the ones to have, I have them. Yay, me! If not, then presumably it's PAL that's better. Which I also have. Yay, me!

Player
You want the one that has the highest quality disc transport, laser and pickup. Processing electronics unimportant as we want the untouched composite video output. Pioneer HLD-X0 anyone?

Or -X9. I'd give "Player" a 25% importance weighting. NTSC, definitely the X0 or X9. Or maybe a Runco THX reference machine? PAL, pretty obviously the 925 or 2950. I've got a 925. Yay, me!

Time Base Corrector
Composite video fed into a standalone professional TBC unit to strip and rebuild the signal with perfect video timing. Who makes TBCs for the pro video market?

I have no real idea, but I'd estimate this is worth 3%. Presumably, a decent player would do a good job with video timing, and a good cap card would do a good job with poor timing.

Comb Filter
The TB corrected signal is fed into a professional comb filter, which will split the signal into component video outputs. I assume that the 3D motion-adaptive type of comb filter is the best?

Again, no real idea, but I'd guess this is maybe 5%? Even the lowly Philips 713x or Conexant 2388x cards do a better job than some of the best LD players, so I'm not sure the 'professional' filters can be all that much better. If you do the math right, it doesn't much matter what it costs. Does it?

Capture Hardware
What kind of professional capture board has a component video input?

Because you could fairly easily cap each of R, G, and B separately (i.e. one at a time with a standard cap card) once they've been split into component outputs, and then re-assemble, this only reduces hassle and isn't really a show-stopper. I say 1% different from a professional card with component in. Overall, I give Cap Hardware a 5% importance. Hey, this is my weighting!

Post-processing
I'll assume that you'll want something better than avisynth and pixiedust?

What's better? Something that costs money? I'm not sure that's a good way of thinking about it. Lowry Digital had the best money can buy, after all, and look what they came up with. I'd say PP is worth 5%, but AviSynth can probably account for 4.5% of the best available technology for any money. It's not fast, but we've all been waiting 25 years already, so what's a few days of processing time at this point?

OK, OK, there are some pretty nice digital grading packages that aren't free, and aren't likely to be duplicated as long as AviSynth is GUI-less. But that's now getting really, really, picky. Like 0.25% importance of the overall 5% I've assigned.

Encoder
If you spend $-000s to buy CCE-Pro, I think it comes with a Pentium workstation and proprietary capture board included. Is CCE pro the best encoder, or are there better packages used by the studios for DVD production?

I can't answer what's best, but I'd guesstimate that the best is better than what's easily available to the persistent amateur by no more than 15%. I think professional stuff doesn't necessarily do a better job, it just does it faster and with less complication. [As an aside, I had a pro sound card once, and it was very nice, but its main feature seemed to be the fact that you could plug in XLR mics, etc., directly. Other than that, the chipset was available elsewhere for less money.] Overall, the encoder is worth maybe 5%.

Finally, I'd give the person doing it an importance factor of maybe 12%, just so this all adds up to 110% (like it should, if you believe 'athaleets' -- I think athletes know better). Even given all the best equipment, some people would find a way to mess it up, but if you were even halfway competent, it would be possible to have something pretty stunning.

Of course, to even reply to this post, I've had to take liberty in assuming I qualify as an 'expert', which I may not. But it's a fun topic, nonetheless!

Info: Original Trilogy on UK Terrestrial TV?
Time
Even if they're DTV (they've been on DTV in the UK before, so this is certainly possible), they may not be advert-free, widescreen OAR, or anamorphic. In fact, they never have been before, so I wouldn't hold my breath.

The best English-language broadcasts remain the Fox 480p, widescreen OAR, anamorphic broadcasts of Empire and Jedi. No ANH, and there were ad breaks every few minutes. Still, they're not too bad. A few glitches (originating from Fox, not the affiliates), but decent most of the time.

I like your new screenshots, and I think your assessment of them is fair. Nice and dispassionate. I feel you're able to look at your own work quite objectively, which is great.

Now back to calibration, etc.:

I'm using the histogram when capping with VirtualVCR, but I'm disappointed to see that it's so small. I'm being pretty conservative, sacrificing a bit of contrast to be sure that I don't blow out the whites nor crush the blacks. On the histogram, it looks like I could push things closer to the edges, but the histogram doesn't seem to be detailed enough for me to know for sure that there aren't (m)any outliers that I'd be destroying. Some things can be fixed in "post", but blow-outs and crushing can't. How have you approached all this?

I've poked around a bit with the ColorTools VDub plugin, but I'm not sure how to use it effectively. Got any hints -- or a complete rundown? I feel like without reference material (like a test pattern), knowing the info CTools can tell you isn't particularly useful. Or am I out to lunch?

I really wish there were some colour bars or something absolutely repeatable to calibrate to. I'd like to think I've got a pretty good eye, but I like concrete, irrefutable numbers better.
