STAR WARS: The Torrents thread
Time
I don't think that's right. I don't believe you should name something that isn't really yours to name, and then reject all appeals to have it changed just because the creator(s) didn't contact you personally. In this case, there is no doubt whatsoever that the creator(s) want 'EditDroid' to be the only name attached to this project. It is not "hearsay" to have information come via Usenet; that is where the community has been posting and leeching stuff since well before OT.com got started.

This is a release that shouldn't have been a release: we are lucky that it escaped. In some ways, we should feel ashamed for spreading it around like this (yes, I have my own copy), because the creators' wish was for it NOT to be spread around. Attaching a random name to it when there's no other info makes sense (it's gotta be called something), but as soon as there is clear and verified intent by the creator(s) to have it changed -- regardless of where that info comes from -- it should be changed.

So, please change it. Get rid of 'MM' altogether, and leave it as 'EditDroid'. It's what the creator(s) want.

@ Rikter, Darth Osor:

Straight from Usenet, where the creator (or spokesperson) answered my post:

>Might have to do a "formerly known as" transition, but I'll bet it can
>be done!

A brief transition would be fine, but we would prefer "Mysterious
Mysteries" cease to be associated with the works in any way
whatsoever. I don't mean to seem harsh about it, but since we were
basically "outed" against our will, the least consideration we should
be afforded is the right to name it whatever we wish.

>Ah! The original Lucasfilm name for the Avid system. Hmm... wonder how
>much should be read into that??

Plenty, since the DVDs were edited on Avid systems. Also, the
EditDroid was laserdisc based, so there's one more level of
connection.

So there you have it. "Mysterious Mysteries" is dead; long live "EditDroid"!

That was my post. I was also the one to ask what the the poster wanted the collection called.

The Avid system is the de facto standard editing system now used for editing motion pictures. Check out www.avid.com for more info.

Info: Any Interest In A Corrected 2004 DVD? (“Deliberate Creative Decisions” info)

I am guessing this 5.1 mix was taken from the 1997 LD set..?

Ah. So this is the same 5.1 mix that I mentioned a few weeks ago in another thread, and somebody answered back that the reason the 1997 audio should not be used was because it is (supposedly) little better than an upsampled 4.0 Surround Sound mix (at least that was the gist...)?

Neil, add me to the 'interested' column.

@RevB:

I wonder how many people are wishing you'd turned on your PM?? (I don't know why, but it's off by default. Another one of the OT.com quirks, like sending e-mail for *every* post made to a thread you're subscribed to, and starting you off on page one of a thread you're subscribed to when you click on the link in an e-mail. D'oh.)

Other than some pretty wicked combing (comb filter error?) in the Leia-on-Tantive-IV shot, that all looks pretty sweet. Anyone who's anybody is going to want a copy. Including me, of course....

Good capture cards - recommendations?

Yeah, it sorta does. The 925 is a nice player, and this is but one minor point. I always thought composite would be untouched, too, because that's what I thought I'd read, and it made sense. Turns out I was wrong! Actually, I don't know if one can be sure that the composite is untouched unless one looks at a schematic for each player in question. It could be that this is a fairly standard way of doing things.

On the bright side, it may yet be possible to grab the video signal upstream of the comb filter in the player, and feed it to a card (like mine, with a Philips SAA7133 chipset) that has a more modern 9- or 10-bit comb filter. Time (and probably some serious frustration) will tell.

As it turns out, if you're using a 925, you're using the comb filter in the player in both instances. Because it's well upstream of things like OSD, etc., it's inevitable that you use the 8-bit, three-line, now-obsolete -2024 comb filter of the player regardless of which set of outputs (composite or S-video) you choose.

The short sample clips I've seen from zion before are very much like the menus on the "real" DVDs: the Star Wars logo recedes into the distance with clips playing inside the letters. Very cool lookin'. I'm sure that's the case here, too. The proof-of-concept I saw some months ago was already pretty polished. It's just the logo that sucked. I hooked zion up with the correct text font (i.e. the one for "Episode V", but I couldn't find the logo. Good to see one has been found!

A message to Jay in regards to DanielB
Time
I come here because of members such as zion, MBJ, Laserman, ADigitalMan, Moth3r, mverta, Rikter, ReverendBeastly, etc., etc. (sorry if I haven't named you personally -- there are a lot of great people here keeping a lot of great projects alive), and I think what happens here is friendly, collaborative, somewhat conspiratorial, and fun. I'd like to think that for the most part I contribute in some small way to that overall vibe. That's what I think most of us are aiming for, anyway.

I'm a big softie at heart. In general, I don't like to see anyone banned, or censored, or censured from someplace like this that's supposed to be fun and edifying. Sometimes it is the lone voice sticking up for an idea that makes it happen, and the masses can be wrong. But in this case I have to agree with MBJ that DanB does not do much for the greater good with his posts. I'd like to think (even now) that he doesn't do it on purpose, but that doesn't make it any less annoying. To be belittled and told you are wrong by somebody who has never once demonstrated any better knowledge or initiative or research is very, very off-putting. It is extremely hard to keep ignoring such so-called dialogue when it's directed your way.

I would second the emotion that being able to filter one's view of the forum to just not include posts by a given individual is something we could use around here.

If a divisive member is banned, there's really not much stopping said member from re-signing under some new nick, which means very quickly the same problem could crop up again. With per-poster filtering, there's no incentive for the bad seed to do anything but continue to post under his or her original nick, because it's not known who's filtering and who's not.

I hope said filtering is technically feasible -- compared to other forum software, whatever's being used here sometime seems clunky (like not being automatically subscribed to threads you start, for one thing). With this sort of personalized filtering, DanB can continue to post what he likes, and those who don't want to see it, won't. Ahh... peaceful.

I don't mean to sound daunting; I mean to sound realistic.

I hope I don't sound like too much of a jerk when I suggest that if you really wanted to help, your time, rather than being spent writing highly-theoretical posts, would be better spent tracking down schematics and highly-experienced electronics nerds. My post was made after seeing the service manual for the Pioneer CLD-D925, and after poring over the schematics for a while, and after tracking down pinouts and spec sheets for some of the (now-obsolete) ICs inside the 925. I'm not sure what you expect, but there is no yellow-highlighted trace labelled "Perfect Video" and a big dot labelled "Tap Here for PAL!!".

It's great you're enthusiastic, it's laudable that you want to help, but at some point mere theoretical second-guessing doesn't add much to the equation. I'd be the first to jump onboard with your ideas, if they hadn't already been thought up elsewhere first. Oh, that's just me being modest: you can check out my post in the ultimate LD thread. So rest assured, we've got top men working on it now. Who? Top men.

I have read hundreds of posts in dozens of threads here at OT.com during my getting-up-to-speed research phase, and, although I arrived here at OT.com a little late to get involved in any recent unpleasantness and thus have no personal grudges, I know you must be aware you have rubbed some people the wrong way. Posts such as yours in this thread may threaten the fragile ceasefire that seems to prevail at the moment, and that may send some long-time members with lots to offer away for good. I would suggest that is not a great position for someone with no equipment or funding to find himself in. Please tread gently.

I believe Laserman's on vacation for a bit, so I'll answer the easy things and he can fill in the gaps and make any corrections when he returns.

Does this also mean preserving the Prologic soundtrack in uncompressed PCM?

The X0 cap is to HuffYUV, so presumably the audio's in the raw AVI as PCM, yeah.

some faint haloing is still visible. The bottom picture is wider? One of them has been stretched, or squashed...?

The haloing is there in the source. I've got just about every SW LD known to man, and it's there on all of them. The width and stretching and squashing is all pretty immaterial -- that's what LanczosResize was made for.

If you going to mod a player for capturing the PAL discs, would it be possible to mod an NTSC unit (ie the X0)?

Already being discussed (by me, with Lman and MBJ, for example). If it's even possible (and it may not be), this would be mighty tricky for several reasons:

1) the player's not Laserman's -- it's "12,000 km away", I believe he posted
2) in order to do any mods, you need the service manual
3) I've never seen an X0 service manual, and believe me, I've looked
4) I suspect the X0 service manual would be in Japanese, because it was only ever a Japan-only player (lucky I lived in Japan, eh?)
5) even many people at Pioneer North America are unaware of the X0, so there's not a ton of help available, even from what is probably the largest NTSC-speaking branch of Pioneer outside Japan

I'm sure Laserman could (will?) add a few more trouble spots.

One thing I do notice is that Laserman's appeal for funding of this project (either in cash, or gifts-in-kind) has fallen on deaf ears -- at least in this thread. Seems to be a large population waiting to get their hands on an X0 cap, but a lot of shuffling of feet and looking the other way when some help is requested in return. I'm not blaming; I'm observing. I would estimate that those of you who don't own an LD player (let alone two or more, looking for a great one) or any LDs (let alone several, looking for the best ones) don't have much idea of how difficult, time consuming, and expensive assembling all these great source materials is. I'm on player number three, and have nine copies of the entire trilogy on LD -- that's about 60 LDs (or 120 sides) to cap. That's the result of scouring eBay and Yahoo Auctions in about four languages for almost two years, and figuring out ways to buy and ship stuff from five or six countries -- including from those xenophobes who are unwilling to ship something outside their own country's borders. (Incidentally, despite my living in Canada and speaking English, I've found US sellers are pretty much the worst in this regard.) So when Laserman asks me, "Can you cap this frame from PAL on a 925 so we can compare?", I can supply it. He could also ask for caps from any other SW LD, PAL or NTSC, and I could do it. But that facility hasn't come cheap or been easily won.

As I re-read this, it sounds vaguely rant-y. It shouldn't (except for the xenophobic American sellers part). I'm simply trying to point out what sort of investment and procurement gymnastics have to go on (and have gone on) in order for this project to get where it's going. That Laserman is willing to make the X0 cap available at all is sort of a surprise to me -- I think I'd be very tempted to hang onto it myself and let someone else who wants an X0 cap do it his or her damn self like I did.

Laserman isn't the only one who could do what he's doing. You could, too. Ah, ha-ha -- no arguments; I said, you could, too. The difference between Laserman and you is that he's doing it (and from scratch, no less) and you are not. There is more than enough info out there for you to do pretty much exactly what Laserman has done, and you even have an idea of what path to follow and what the results should be like (unlike some of the dead ends Laserman may have already faced; I know I've hit a few). If you're not really willing to attempt it yourself, then I ask why you think Laserman should supply his hard-earned results to you for free instead? A rhetorical question to chew on. "The phone lines are open; operators are standing by..."

Mmm... sleep. That's where I'm a Viking!

Wanted: I'm looking for a PAL VCR...

That's probably not necessary anyway. Most power supplies are quite happy with anything between about 100V and 240V. Some have a switch on the back, but others just work. Then all you'll need is a power cord with the US/Canada three-prong plug.

Many DVD players available in North America will do PAL with no sweat. Many (but fewer) can be made region-free with remote keypresses. (Mine, of course, does everything now that I've poked around under the hood...) But unless you're also bringing your TV (did you say you were?), then won't your DVD player be sorta useless, because its S-video (etc.) out will be PAL, while your new North American TV will be made in China -- uhh... I mean it'll be NTSC. And I've never, ever seen a dual-standard TV for sale in North America.

Or are you planning to run everything to a computer capture card? Then you'll be fine either way.

BTW, I'm pretty sure most home circuits in North America are either 10A or 15A max. I think it depends on the wire gauge, and what sort of service (i.e. washer & dryer? or just general? or whatever...) you're running from. Nobody outside electricians will really know this well (and it'll depend on your actual abode). But you might find something online if you look for the electrical code for the place you'll be moving to. Or check some online forum like that of Fine Homebuilding magazine.

Idea & Info Wanted: Dreaming of the ultimate LD transfer
Time
How 'bout this for blue-skying:

The laser assembly is just an input to some complicated processing, right? And even some of that complicated processing is just an input to some even more complicated processing. Part of that processing is feedback to the laser assembly (accel or brake, for example), and some is signal from the disc -- some sort of RF signal, which isn't yet video and audio so much as it is "proto"-video and "proto"-audio, to be turned into RGB/S-video/composite way down the line somewhere.

(You know where I'm heading with this, don't you?)

Could it be possible to build a Franken-X0 that would use the high-quality laser pickup and some of the early signal processing stuff of the X0, but be controlled (feedback, and latter signal processing) by something like the 925 or 2950's PAL section?

Now, assuming that it is possible -- I'm an optimist, but not an electrical engineer -- is it even remotely feasible?

I don't think anyone could argue that this would not be the best possible PAL player ever. Totally unique, and fearsome. Also maybe a waste of a good X0, perhaps, but unique and fearsome.

I think we should sort out just exactly which frame that is! How many frames before/after the next cut? I'm sure I'm in the ballpark, but if we're going to get super-picky about colours, smoothness, sharpness, etc., etc., in a 500% blowup, we really should make sure it's apples and apples we're comparing.

I mean, shouldn't we?

(I'll make the caps tomorrow evening -- so about 22 hours from now).
