1. Dr. Gonzo is from NTSC, which is maybe a dozen or so frames longer than the video you've got, so you may have audio sync problems.
2. Instead of 34 hours, why not give DVDShrink a shot at it? It'd be quite a bit faster. As for quality? Since you'd only be dropping from 4.5GB to maybe 4.2, I'm guessing it'd be pretty good. Of course, when you reply and say it's better to re-render from the source, you're right. And it's your project. I'd do the same, actually.

As for authoring, I hear very good things about DVDlab -- but I don't know if the bargain-basement version will do subs at all. Might have to get Studio or Pro. Can't remember.
Authoring means you'll need all the assets from the disc you've got: audio (as either MPEG or AC3), video (M2V with no audio is best), menu pages (as PNG, I guess?), and your sub file. DVD Decrypter should be able to easily demux from the disc you've got, IIRC, even though there's no encryption to be Decrypted.
That should get you started. Do a bunch of reading (and learning) on your own, and you'll know more about this than most of us here -- me included. Go on: be the 'one black bar subtitle' guru!

I last saw this trick about three years ago, when I got some absolutely horrid Chinese boots: to watch the movie without Chinese subs, you were actually watching the hard-coded Chinese subs with DVD soft-sub black patches added!
By the way, if you're opening stuff in VDub, then whatever you do there will have to be re-encoded. VDub does not edit MPEG-2.
In fact, if you're using VDub anyway, what are you doing messing around with DeLogo and the like?? Just lop off the black bars that are there, and add them in again. In AviSynth, that takes exactly two commands, Trim() and AddBorders().

Great to hear you got it sorted! I'm a big fan of people who can take an idea and run with it... Also cool to hear Rogers doesn't suck. I'm on Telus, which also doesn't suck, but it doesn't not suck quite as much as Rogers. I think what I'm trying to say is that I doubt I'd have been able to get everything from Telus at this late stage.

Yes, that's a very heavy dollop of sarcasm.
The only down side is that Lagarith is slightly slower than HuffYUV. But when it comes to quality and size I would think you would be willing to sacrifice a bit of speed.

MSU is really slow (for 550 frames it took about 12 minutes).

The nice thing about HuffYUV is that it is very fast, which makes it very good for capturing. It's not an especially good archive format (because of its size), but it's a great capture format. Considering most people have never heard of Lagarith, and that MBJ has previously quoted figures around 1TB for his storage capacity, I don't think the X0 Project has gone wrong in choosing HuffYUV.

I say 'Huff why you vee,' because it's HUFFman compression of a YUV signal. I used to want to say 'Huffy' and leave the 'UV' off, though.

Uhh... where? 'Cause there have been three people in this thread who have pointed out that there are at least three versions available already, and they're all from DVB caps rather than LD. Why aren't any of those people your hero, for pointing out so many versions that already exist?
Not to disparage Rikter's new efforts, but I'd really like to read how a new version will be any better than what's already available.

PAL DV is 4:2:0 and NTSC DV is 4:1:1. DVD is 4:2:0 in both systems (at least I'm very sure it is).
You can read up on chroma subsampling differences here: http://www.mir.com/DMG/chroma.html

Amateur!
Seriously, I don't know exactly what I've spent -- and I don't want to know, so I don't have a figure to give my wife -- but it's a lot. You're doing the right thing by getting lots of discs. I edited between French and German discs sometime last year, and can confirm it's possible to put together a version with no missing frames at any transitions.
Still working on getting a better PAL LD player, though. I've got a 925 and access to a 2950, but I want something better...

That is not universally true. It is only true for material that is exactly 16:9; anything else -- like Star Wars, at 2.35:1 -- will also have black bars as part of the movie.
@Dantha Fodder: Chances are good that even though Premiere displays the picture without horizontal stretching, it's still fine. As long as it's re-encoded with the 16:9 flag set, all will be well.
As suggested, the render-and-test routine is the best way to ensure everything's working properly.

MaximRecoil has good, strong reasons why TR47 should be included as part of the name. I think he's right that both Cowclops and TR47 should be mentioned. Something like "TR47 presents Cowclops v.2" or "TR47 v.2 powered by Cowclops" or whatever. It's bound to be a bit clunky, but what can you do?
Thrashing out the details now, before the set is released, is far better than the alternatives. As long as Cowclops is given his due, MaximRecoil is right to be further thinking of 'branding' and continuity.

But your results will suck in comparison.
In the commercial printing industry, there's a saying: "Price, Quality, Speed: Pick any two." Same thing goes here, pretty much. The X0 Project, not being supported by a studio or anything, has chosen Price and Quality (and even then Price is of less concern than it is to probably any other project), so Speed necessarily suffers.
I, for one, am enjoying the X0 Project ride, no matter how long it takes. And I'll bet the X0 Project wraps it up well before mverta does!

I agree with your analysis of "sounds good" and "continuity" when applied to companies and brands. However, I feel this is a different situation. Cowclops is not a real brand or a company. He's an individual, and as such surely has the expectation that his name be attached to his work if he so chooses. I don't discount the contribution TR47 has made to promulgating the original transfer Cowclops did, but if I were Cowclops and now came up with a better transfer and asked that my name be attached, I'd be quite insulted that somebody was arguing to keep my name off simply because some other name "sounds good" and "maintains continuity." I still feel that in this context, those are weak and lazy reasons.

What's it look like in some computer-based player (like VLC or Media Player Classic, or PowerDVD or WinDVD)? That might also give some hints as to what the player's being told to do.
