Info Wanted: Special Edition Screenshot Request

That is correct, to the best of my knowledge -- and I'm pretty sure my knowledge is as complete as anyone's. There have been no HD broadcasts of the OT, anywhere, anytime. The best is PAL DVB (576P), with a Fox 480P airing of Empire and Jedi a close second. So what you're getting on TB or GKar is state of the art, with probably no (or minimal) re-encoding artifacts.

<strong>The Cowclops Transfers (a.k.a. the PCM audio DVD's, Row47 set) Info and Feedback Thread</strong> (Released)
Time
Yeah: a few standardized screen caps included right in the FAQ post. Personally, for any new set I like to see:

(a) if the thing's anamorphic;
(b) what's up with Greedo's subs -- hard or soft, font, size, colour, accuracy, etc.;
(c) if the menus suck or not -- and what to look for when the disc's fired up, to be able to tell different versions apart; and
(d) some technical details, like sharpness, colour, blown-out whites, crushed blacks, noise, etc.

I think most of that could be distilled to just two or three caps for the first film, and maybe two for each other film. Seven screen caps -- OK, say a maximum of 10 -- to more or less define a set would be acceptable, wouldn't it?

Whoa -- you have to get 5 minutes in before you notice junk like that? The ultimate project -- the X0 Project, perhaps? -- will have to have rotoscoping applied to nearly every frame. Well, maybe every second frame. There is a lot of junk that is hard-coded into the LDs. Even some video dropouts are hard-coded! It's not just your LD player...

I think that can be added as an item to Laserman's list:

- heavy duty rotoscoping of dust / scratches / blobs of colour / dropouts on master -- too numerous to specify individually.

Or .tga. Don't forget that!

I'm also surprised that you'd suggest exporting as a JPG. Hmm... really? Compared to TIF, TGA, or PNG -- or even GIF, in this case? -- JPG is pretty much the wrong tool, isn't it?

I never used PNG for a long while, 'cause I didn't know what it was. Once I learned that it was lossless and compressed, I started using it when I would have used GIF in the past.

In other words, perhaps none of the versions you can get now is the one used for Star Wars. To get an absolutely perfect exact match, you'll have to tweak both letter shapes and inter-letter spacing by hand. Since there are relatively few letters (ALUCSFIMTDProductionlgmeaxyfr,w.) to worry about, it shouldn't take that long.

Laserman has said he's planning on doing exactly that this weekend. Once he's done, I'd almost suggest he keep it to himself -- maybe produce an X0 Project newsletter on how it's done? This is one of those character-building (no pun intended!) exercises that everybody should have to do for him- or herself at least once. Makes you appreciate even more the effort people put into these fan preservation projects! And personally, I'd still rather do this than rotoscoping, which is another super-time-consuming b!tch of a chore.

No, don't write off what you've already downloaded! Just head to Giganews (as but one example), and use their short-term trial period. They'll let you d/l about a gig (or so) over three days, for free. Just be sure to cancel after those three days. This is all on the up-and-up, too. From Giganews' site:
Free 3-day Trial
All new Giganews personal accounts come with 3 days of free service (up to 1GB total transfer). If you cancel by 12:01am CDT (UTC-0500) on 07/12/2005, you will be charged nothing. If you do not cancel by 12:01am CDT (UTC-0500) on 07/12/2005, the service level you select below will automatically start and you will be charged for that service.

This offer is only good once, and is not available to current Giganews account holders.

There is no way you're missing a whole gig, so this should work perfectly for you.

You'd better be able to answer "yes, of course!" to the question, "You do have a commercial usenet server account, don't you?" before you start askin' for reposts...

I'm getting only three parts messed up, and that's just on my ISP's server. Haven't checked Giganews, but I suspect it's perfect.

With that many parts missing (and stuff still being posted/propagated), I suspect you are relying solely on your ISP's budget server. Either (a) give it a bit more time; or (b) take advantage of one of the many commercial servers that'll give you a trial account for several days.

AviSynth and Virtualdub filters
Time
That damn Laserman beats me out yet again...!

One thing Laserman's post reminded me of, though: if you start with VDub and get used to some of those filters, you can probably also use them in AviSynth. There are scripts written to allow the use of many (most?) VDub filters in AviSynth. Beats the hell out of trying to save different configurations of VDub filters for a given project...

AviSynth and Virtualdub filters

I'm not Laserman, nor zion, but I know a thing or two about AviSynth and VirtualDub -- especially the 'how to get started' part.

For AviSynth, you need to know about only two places: AviSynth.org (http://www.avisynth.org), and Doom9's forum (http://forum.doom9.org).

AviSynth.org is an online Wiki manual/user's guide, and is pretty comprehensive. Doom9's forum is where those hardcore videophiles who actually write filters and scripts and functions go. You will not need any other places to start.

VirtualDub has a new release today (1.6.8 or something?); you can also get info about how to use VDub at Doom9. I think a lot of us more experienced video tweakers use VirtualDubMod in conjunction with AviSynth. That's a very powerful, flexible, and totally free setup.

One thing to keep in mind: always use the smallest number of filters you can get away with. Using too many makes things slow, harder to troubleshoot, and (often) crappier.

Have fun!

Almost nobody does! I'm not sure whether nobody has one because they're super-expensive, or they're super-expensive because nobody has one.

I do have a decent scanner, though, and some expertise with Photoshop. So when the discs make their way here, I'll take a shot at scanning the cover. If my results suck, then there's always MBJ to come...

You are never, ever going to find a perfect match. Just think about how the titles were made: they were almost certainly done up with Letraset or a Linotronic (or something like that), possibly shot with a process camera to make a 'negative' PMT, and then filmed with a Dykstraflex camera. Any one of these steps could change the kerning, the weight of the type, and introduce spherical (or anamorphic?) abberations.

So, the best way to get an exact match is to start with something damn close -- the aforementioned Franklin Gothic, say -- drop everything into Illustrator or CorelDRAW (as I mentioned before), and adjust nodes by hand. Not difficult at all. Just a bit time-consuming. Assuming you've got Franklin Gothic, of course.

Oh, yeah. You're the one guy not working on a DVD! My apologies -- of course DVDShrink can't help you. In the grand scheme of things, 34 hours isn't that long, anyway.
