How about LFL releases only widescreen (they are being called the "theatrical" versions, after all), and then people here at OT.com will have something to bitch about for the next several years? Think of the cool projects that could be started: making the best possible P&S versions from the WS versions, lovingly reproducing the creative decisions made by some telecine technician in about 1982.

I know that's why; what I don't understand (with the benefit of 20/20 hindsight) is how or why it all blew up like it did. I'll admit I was "antagonized" at the outset, but now I'm wondering just what the big deal was. The new DVDs are coming -- yay! The X0 Project is continuing -- yay! OCPMovie's stuff is still available -- yay! And hopefully ol' ocpmovie himself will be back soon -- yay!

He has been TEMPORARILY banned. (Right??) I'm looking forward to ocpmovie's return. There is no arguing that he has long been a real asset to this forum. Not too sure how or why things got out of hand earlier this week, but I think we're all hoping for a return to form all 'round, early next week.

Oh, Lord -- I hope not! It's about time that "foolscreen" nonsense just went away. I will never understand why someone would voluntarily watch only 57% of the picture that was shot for our viewing pleasure.

And a fullscreen (sic) release just adds three more items to the completionist's checklist...

Hee, hee! You know, these sorts of picking-on-spelling-and-punctuation posts have a lot more weight when they themselves aren't riddled with errors (I count at least five)...

I think a one-week vacation sounds like a plan. I typically enjoyed ocpmovie's posts and stuff, until earlier this week. I like a good (if twisted) sense of humour, but this stuff went somewhat over the line. I hope ocpmovie takes it like a man, and makes a welcome, well-mannered return. I'm looking forward to things getting back to normal, no harm, no foul.

Good, on-topic question. How about:

- colour correction faithful to original film
- both crawls (and/or other languages, say?)
- Original Unaltered Trilogy elements in same quality as rest of film
- HD resolution
- multiple audio tracks
- DTS 5.1 audio

I don't see that anybody would have a better shot at filling in that wish list than the X0 Project has, assuming LFL doesn't get it exactly right in September.

Not true! You edited my post to sound like I was saying everything from the X0 Project is state-of-the-art, which is not the same as saying that I have confidence that everything behind the scenes is as close to state-of-the-art as enthusiasts can get. Your edit implies that I'm in the "blind faith in LD" camp, when I am not. Bits are cheap; why not use the whole quote?

What I removed from your post is something you have removed from every post you've quoted: context. If that happens to have removed the intent from your post, and in fact turned the meaning completely around, well, then, that's really not any different from what you've been doing. Because you did type, "Yeah, my Classic Editions looked like shit, didn't they? Totally terrible." I don't think that sounds substantially different from how I posted it above. Does it?

If we're trading selectively-edited quotes...

"Jesus christ, people, 2+4 equals four." - ocpmovie

"[M]y Classic Editions looked like shit ... totally terrible." - ocpmovie

If you're going to quote me, please do it properly:

"I have every confidence whatever happens behind the scenes at X0 headquarters is about as state-of-the-art as enthusiasts can get." - Karyudo

And my favourite:

I still think OCP is being a mean-spirited jerk.

I don't think anybody in his right mind would argue that a straight transfer from a 10+ year-old laserdisc is going to beat the picture quality of a DVD. So on that point, OCP is probably right in saying LD is dead. Assuming, of course, that LFL is planning to do a decent job of downsampling their 10+ year-old digital master tape.

However, what I feel characterizes the X0 Project best is not its laserdisc source, but the level of quality being brought to whatever best source is available. I don't think that sort of attitude is obsolete; I don't imagine the information the Project has been able to dig up is wasted; I don't feel those involved have been "owned" by LFL through this announcement.

What I expect will be true of the X0 Project is that continuing to work with the LD source for the time being (there's nothing as true to the original film at the moment, despite its overall lack of resolution) will be excellent background information for when the new discs arrive in September. The X0 Project has long alluded to the fact it's got good stuff at its disposal beyond just an excellent LD cap. I know they're working with TooT, for example. I'm convinced I recall posts made here referring to HD (as in "upsampling to"). I believe the site at some point mentioned comparing colours to actual film frames. All of these things, and the Project is still dealing with LD? There must be a reason, beyond a blind allegiance to a dead format.

I have every confidence whatever happens behind the scenes at X0 headquarters is about as state-of-the-art as enthusiasts can get. I suspect I'm not alone in that confidence. About the only posts I've seen not expressing some similar level of confidence are those made by OCP, whose posts are increasingly coming across as very sour grapes. Not very becoming of someone who's done good things for the fan edit scene, and I wish he'd stop.

One thing a real lawyer would know, for example, is that it's "copyright," not "copywrite." As in, the right to make copies. Not pickin' on you, specifically, fatned; I don't know how many times I've seen this mistake. Personally, I don't know how such a mistake could get started and repeated.

Info: A CALL TO ARMS FOR THE X0 PROJECT! (was: A SPARK OF HOPE...)

Ay, chihuahua! The announcement of the official OOT is cool, but it’s got to be a mixed blessing for the boys at the X0 Project!

I’m thinkin’ I (we all?) would still pay good money for an X0 Project transfer before ponying up for any official release, so I’m planning to make another “don’t give up now!” donation. I really hope there’s life in the Project yet, even though I could totally see packing up shop as an option.

I can’t help but think that if it wasn’t for organized efforts like The X0 Project, LFL might not be releasing the OOT at all, let alone this year. I figure it’s worth a tip of my hat and a dip into my wallet to acknowledge the pioneer (Pioneer?) spirit and contributions thus far of a bunch of people willing to hang it all out there by investing time, effort and wads of cash into something superlative that we are all lookin’ forward to.

Why are you being such an ass, ocpmovie?

I think it's pretty disrespectful to be dissing the X0 Project so loudly and at such length. What did they ever do to you? I'm actually sort of surprised that you, a fellow perfectionist preservationist, are the first one to be (building and then) jumping on the 'X0 Project got owned' bandwagon. WTF is that all about? Your projects aren't the same, so it's not like there's some sort of huge pissing contest. Is there? (What did I miss?)

Sure hope it's the liquor talking. 'Cause at the moment you appear to be in the distinct minority, with your one-person LOL-fest.

It is highly unlikely that both other discs have flaws in exactly the same places, so you should be fine. I'll be looking for your "Wow! TooT (as commissioned by Karyudo) is amazing!" thread once you've see the results!

P.S. Did you get the PM?

I did. I'd have answered already, but my mailbox is full again. This board's mail system drives me bonkers. However, I answer direct e-mail to 'karyudo @ gmail . com' promptly!

Grinder, that's quite the dramatic demonstration of picture flaws! I hope you'll consider posting some post-TooT results. It'd be way cool to see what you started with, and what you're able to come up with as a final result.

I understand that the X0 Project is also using TooT (including some customized departures to do some more specific tasks), but I can't imagine that starting with an excellent capture from discs that aren't typically known as rotters will be anywhere near as dramatic as yours could be. The discs I have don't seem to have nearly that amount of junk, so TooT-ing results are also pretty subtle when you're just looking at screen caps.
