~French Coffret Trilogie LD to DVD transfer~ (Released)
Time
Being the spiritual creator of TooT and its biggest fan, I can confirm that there are some artifacts that appear across multiple discs. I think there are several classes of flaws:

1. Disc-specific flaws. This includes laser rot, and can be completely cured by TooT.

2. Version-specific flaws. Don't know if there are actually any errors of this type, but if there are, then they're created between master tape and LD mastering, so that a specific pressing run of LDs all have the same errors.

3. Master tape-specific flaws. I know there are several of these. The same dropout can occur on not only several discs of the same pressing, but on discs of different pressings (but presumably made from the same master tape). For example, there are errors common to both French and German THX discs.

4. Print-specific flaws. Some errors are no doubt introduced by the use of a given print for the telecine session. If the print's dirty, then that dirt's going to turn up on all discs made from that print, which could be a lot. I think the burn marks during the Tantive scenes are an example. But they could also be...

5. Master neg flaws. There are some flaws that were introduced in 1975-1977 as Star Wars was being made. All the effects were done with optical printers, which means there could be up to several dozen elements composited into a given shot. Which means several dozen pieces of film that would have to be shot, processed, handled, edited, and finally composited without any dust present, in order to give a final composite negative without dust. A daunting task. And one that was probably impossible -- and impractical -- for a low-budget space opera, back in an era when "home theatre" meant waiting for a movie to be shown on your 13" TV and audiences just weren't as discriminating as today.

I'll freely admit I use it for pretty much everything I rip. It's just I don't rip that much stuff. On occasion I'll be pressed for time on a rental or library DVD, and I'll make a quick rip so I can watch it without late fees or fines. But that's about it. I'm boring.

Impressive SW LD collection you've got there. And you've got one LD player more than me, dammit! Which types?

Thanks. It's taken quite a while to acquire all those discs. It's made more difficult by the fact I'm a pretty-much-unilingual NTSC-watchin' Canadian, while I've been looking for German and French PAL discs.

And I guess I've actually got three more players than you, since I sorta forgot I've got two more in a box someplace. If memory serves, I've got a Denon 2300, a Pioneer 504, a Pioneer 525, and two Pioneer industrial players. Whose numbers I can never remember: 800? 440D? Something along those lines.

Anyone looking for a decent, clean, underused LD player? Let me know by e-mail (address below)...

No, getting any of the original SW films is much, much harder than acquiring the LOTR trilogy.

Definitely looking forward to the HD version of Peter Jackson's [...] Rings trilogy in HD!

The Rings trilogy was broadcast in HD 1-2 years or so ago. At least TTT was shown in both Theatrical and Extended versions. Not so sure about the others.

THE FAN EDIT CONTEST HAS A WINNER !!! REVIEWS IN OFF TOPIC FORUM
Time
I was one of the judges for this time 'round. I quite purposely didn't post my individual comments to the forum, since I figured the appropriate way for entrants to get feedback was to be able to read all of the judges' (anonymous?) comments, in private. I think those people who entered should get some feedback, but I'm not sure it's appropriate for everybody and his dog to be able to read that feedback. It's the privilege of having entered: you get some private feedback about your work from people who tried their best to judge to a common standard.

As far as slagging CBB, I think DAYV can confirm my scores showed I was not influenced by anything said in this forum.

One of the things I submitted to DAYV along with my scorecards was a bunch of suggestions on how to perhaps modify the contest for next time. I think my best suggestion was to centralize the entry point: each entry should be copied for each judge, and sent to one location. At that location, all the entries should be assembled into complete entry packages, and sent out to each judge from there. This cuts the postage to the minimum (it is much cheaper to send one package with seven discs to one place, than seven packages with one disc to seven places), and it also ensures that each judge gets exactly the same thing, more or less at the same time.

I also figure there should be more detail given in each judging category (e.g. points for more sub-categories). As a judge, I wasn't too sure how I was supposed to judge audio, for example, knowing that the source was DD5.1 but that the heavily-edited result on an edit was only 2.0. Do I judge the technical merit, and say that job wasn't so hot (5.1 -> 2.0), or do I judge the artistic merit (a big change made in the dialogue or music or whatever)? Both are valid approaches, I think, and should be considered separately.

I also think a lot more information should be required of entrants about the raw materials used, the applications and techniques employed, and the specs on the final result -- including a fairly-detailed rundown of what exactly was changed in the edit. In this vein, CBB did a great job: I got a sheet for each film that explained what the point was, and approximately where they made changes. The Cyberdyne T2 edit was also cool for that, especially an extra with switchable audio (!) showing the before/after on the replacement of the G'n'R song.

As it is, I think this contest was still a success. Anything volunteer like this takes a lot of effort on everybody's part to make it work at all, let alone fairly smoothly. Big props to DAYV for doggedly keeping the thing moving forward (even when one of those damn Canadian judges was taking so long) and actually seeing it through! And also much respect to all the editors who submitted work. I figure this is about as bad as we'll ever see: things can only get better! And if this is the worst, then that's not too shabby at all.

Help Wanted: Star Wars films with audio description. Can anyone help out??
Time
Surely the clever thing to do would be to source a tape/disc of the DVS version, and cap/rip the audio? Faster (and better?) than starting from scratch, I'd imagine.

How much does the DVS version cost? If it's at libraries, I wonder if there is some sort of inter-library loan system possible?

If anybody has any further info on where to buy these things, please post it! UPC codes and/or ISBN numbers, etc., would also be helpful. Without an exact UPC or something, DVS might not be the first thing quoted by a sighted cataloguer.

These editions have got to be available in more than one library, someplace other than Wisconsin.

'Backstroke of the West' with retail DVD quality : FINISHED & RELEASED
Time
Being an adult, and living in a country where we can watch "South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut" without any edits for language on regular TV in primetime, I don't want the subs Bowdlerized. But I see Sluggo's point: it would be nice to have the option for something cleaned up. What I think would be uncool would be to have only a non-swear version!

Just out of curiosity, I wonder how you clean up "R2! Do you is fcuking!"?

Actually, kanji is one of the Japanese character sets. The part that says "Sutaa Uo-ozu" is in katakana, which is used for foreign loan words.

There are several books available in Japan (not manga) that have artwork on the cover that's different again from the stuff posted here. Haven't bought any, so I can't post samples, sadly...

The Cyberdyne edit came to me complete with cover and disc art. The front of the cover is a slight modification of an original cover, but the back points out all the features of the disc. The disc itself features some extras, with an original trailer (used as part of the edited film) and some before/after scenes with selectable audio. To be honest, I haven't finished watching the whole film, but the edited parts I did see were very well done.

Thanks for your kind offer, movie_rebel! In order for me to contact you, you've either got to turn PMs on (you appear to have accepted the default, which for this forum is OFF, strangely) or send me quick message to karyudo at gmail dot com.

My preference would actually be for e-mail, because as you'll soon learn, your PM box will hold only a total of 25 incoming and outgoing messages -- too few for many people, including me!

OK, then, you're even weirder than any of the three scenarios I outlined: you're a North American who likes F1!

I like F1 myself. I miss Murray! Saw him walk past me in the (near-empty) grandstands at the very first F1 race I ever attended (the 1995 Pacific GP) and was so naive that I figured, "Oh, I'll just go up and talk to him next weekend at Suzuka." Yeah, right!

Well done. You must be a) Canadian; b) from Detroit, Minnesota, or North Dakota; or c) particularly perceptive on your trips to Canada.

I didn't realize until I lived in Japan just how much unique Canadian stuff there is, that nobody else really knows about. Or cares about, I suppose. Want another example (for people who lived through the '80s)?

Fill in the blanks: Gino ______, "Black ____ look _____ in the _____."

Unless you're Canadian, I suspect right about now you're thinkin', "Huh?"

(Amazingly, even with that little information, Google can supply the answer on the first page of results.)
