Sorry to disagree but you are wrong. Porco rosso was released in theaters in france, on June 1995 by Studio Canal. Jean-Pierre Dionnet bought two films from Ghibli at that time, Porco Rosso and Totoro. Totoro was directly broadcasted on Canal + in 1998.

proofs here : Porco rosso in France and Totoro in France

the deal between Ghibli and Disney was only concluded in 1999. And The first Ghibli film released in france under the Buena Vista Banner, was Princess Mononoke on January 2000.

Damn, I was sure to have read infos about Ghibli-Disney deal before '99... Sorry, it seems that I have a bad memory...

I've read (in Animeland magazine, Ghibli special issue) that the US soundtrack of Nausicaa has been totally remade, cause it was too much different of other US production. And more than that, Nausicaa has been re-edited (I don't remember if it was the US version) and many scenes have been deleted...
I'll try to find the article about that (it's in french, but...).

I can assure you that all the Ghibli movies have been distributed , in France, by Buena Vista, even if they were not credited. Studio Canal, on Porco Rosso, was the DVD editor, and a third part distributor (if I remember well), but Buena Vista has always been involved in the distribution of Ghibli movies in occident.
It's not that they "love" those movies and wanted to let occidental people know those treasures, but for many years in Japan, Miyazaki is known as the "japanese Disney" (even if I find that insulting, IMO...lol), and so, Buena Vista has always wanted to control the distribution of his movies.

Anyway, good news about Porco Rosso! It's one of my favourites, and I've tried for a long time now to find it on DVD. Thanks for the tip!

Yes, it's a well-known problem about LDs, and especially on Star Wars: the film has to be cut (due to the duration available on a LD), and sometimes the transition effect between two scenes disapears... I've noticed that many years ago, with movies with fading effect between two scenes which is not present on the LD version. But the quality available on a LD worth the buy IMO.

The real problem for Ghibli animes is that the films are ditributed by Buena Vista (it's the case in Europe, and maybe in US?) and, as everybody knows it, Buena Vista = Disney. And they don't distribute any Ghibli film (in theatres or on DVD) when Disney stuff come in (like a new movie, or a DVD release)... too lame...
For an exemple, when they have distributed "Porco Rosso" in France (I don't remember the year), this Ghibli anime has won (in term of amount of tickets) against the Disney animated of the moment (I don't remember which one). Since this time, every Ghibli movie have been distributed only between two Disney movies...

Actually, in France, even if there's Narnia in theatres (but it's really too different of an anime, so, no conflict), we have the pleasure to have "Pompoko" in theatres. I haven't seen it yet, but I will soon! Anybody saw it?

On TESB the temporal smoothing is much worse, it is oversaturated at some points, undersaturated at others: saturation, brightness and contrast fluctuate as hell.

EDIT: And a lot more line drops.

What do you think?

I just think that, at this time, there were no better versions (considering it's a CAV version).

If it's true, I don't understand the point of that, and I don't find that funny... I just hope the purpose was not to send fans to Supershadow, believing that what he says is true...

So, I've tried to translate all the important parts (not the story descriptions of each film). Here it is:

"Three at a time, et none the less! The THX label arrives on the french PAL LD market with, as first titles, the 3 episodes of Star Wars on 3 CAV LD, with 4 sides for each film. It's logical: George Lucas is at the origine of the trilogy and the THX label. For the event, the director-business man has verified himself the samples, that we've had the pleasure to watch. So, we haven't had the occasion to test the commercial copies, which will be out only november 2nd, due to the late approbation of George Lucas. Anyway, the commercial copies should be the same as the ones we watched.

Star Wars:

> Image: variable quality, with beautiful sequences and "granulous" scenes (desert). Pretty light colors, which could have been more present. The image, globaly, has a good definition and a good quality.
Unfortunately, some unwelcomed "drops" (I don't know exactly what he means by that) add some stars (I think he means some "white parasites"), even in the cinemascope (widescreen) black bars. The 1st disc being more touched than the 2nd one, but this whole edition is largely better than previous releases.
> Sound: Excellent stereo, clear voices. Good dynamic.
> Technical note: 4 (of 5 I guess)
> USA - 1977 - Color - 122' - Fox Vidéo/PFC Vidéo - THX label - 2 discs - 4 sides - 2.35 Cinémascope format - Stereo - French Version - CAV - Chaptered - Manufactured by MPO.

The Empire Strikes Back:

> Image: A good mastering with sequences with very precise image. Some "drops" (again) in some shots. The interiors scenes are pretty nice, but the snow sequences are very granulous.
> Sound: Brilliant, a good general rendering in the action sequences. It's dynamic. Dolby Surround with very distinct effects (starships flying by from behind to above).
> Technical Note: 4
> USA - 1980 - Color - 124' - Fox Vidéo/PFC Vidéo - THX label - 2 discs - 4 sides - 2.35 Cinémascope format - Dolby Surround Stereo - French - CAV - Chaptered - Manufactured by MPO.

Return of the Jedi:

> Image: Very nice definition, unfortunately parasited by some "drops" (I hope you know what he's talking about!). Very well respected colors. Note: a sudden and unwelcomed cut at the end of the 1st side (I think he's just saying that the cut has surely been made during a scene, instead of between two scenes).
> Sound: Very clear, nice dynamic.
> Technical Note: 4
> USA - 1983 - Color - 132' - Fox Vidéo/PFC Vidéo - THX label - 2 discs - 4 sides - 2.35 Cinémascope format - Dolby Surround Stereo - French - CAV - Chaptered - Manufactured by MPO.

Note: all the durations are those mentioned on the LD covers, but aren't the real durations of the LDs (I guess it's the duration without the manufacturers logos and legal disclaimer)."

In "La Trilogie Déclinée" part, the author is just talking about the previous releases, and tells us that all the CAV editions (including this one) have not the special features present in THX VHS tapes.

In "Parfaitement Compatibles !", the author talks about the THX mastering, perfectly compatible with any LD installation...

I hope it will help you, and sorry for my english, it's far from perfect, but I hope that is understandable.

Star Wars DVD Covers

Yep, I think you're right, landscape covers have nothing to do with age. And I also agree about the "shitty cardboard Warner Bros cases"! In fact, I can tell that I hate Warner Bros as a DVD publisher, they often make ugly DVDs, with ugly menus, and in France, the audio commentaries (of Warner Bros pictures) are never subtitled...

Anyway, I really like those landscape covers, I find there is more space (in a way) for description, in the back cover.

It'll make a big splash, get a glowing 90% from some ad-laden industry mag, then quickly fade away as everyone goes back to the well-engineered, universally available standby -- be it Counterstrike* or HTML or whatever.

Hey, what do you think this technology is made for (and especially PC games)? Make people buy bigger and expensive PCs...
The other thing is that the "Flash 8 required" warn was not present in the very begining website and, even if we can enter it with Flash 7, the site was really bugy...

If you're interested, I have some french special editions ("Mononoké" and "Chihiro") containing special features made just for those french edition (Japanese animes and mangas are very appreciated in France!). The most interesting is an encounter between Miyazaki and the sci-fi illustrator Moebius (made during an exposition of their work in Paris).
I'm also a huge Ghibli fan, and could help you if I can. Tell me.

Yeah, that's right. I forgot that one. They have some strange things in Star Wars. Do you remember the horses and the rabbits and other earthly animals they had in the Ewok movies?

Yeah, and it's pretty sure that they have used those "real-world" animals just cause of the pretty low budget (I mean, it was just TV movies).
The interesting thing is that in the excellent book "The Wildlife of Star Wars" (a must-have for every SW creature fan), the Ewok ponys and horses are described as "equus", "found in several planets", and have a "mysterious" origin.
I've always loved the reference books just for that: they always explain all the strange things (and even the contradictions) of the SW universe in really well done explanations.

Has anyone here read Traitor, which is Matthew Stover's excellent entry to the New Jedi Order?

Not yet. I'm trying to read the novel in chronological order and haven't read any NJO novels for now.

Have you read his Clone Wars-era novel Shatterpoint then?

No, just cause the Clone Wars era is not yet edited in pocket books (I don't know how you call that in english) in France. Some of them have been edited in bigger format but are too expansive for me. But I'd like to read the novels from that era.
