BTW, it reminds me that in the last Harry Potter, the biggest work the visual fx guys had to do was deleting the "spots" on the teen actors' faces...

Well, concerning THAT particular photo, I must say that the photo itself is ugly... Anyone photographed with flash or any face-lighting is pretty much ugly. I've seen better photos of him...

I'm really not sure about that. Just see the end of ROTS, where droids seem to be new "members" of the Tantive IV. The reference books had to explain the "hole" between ROTS and ANH, where, in the series, the droids have no masters...

"Lucas making references to the EU", that line sounds really uncredible, IMO (even if he has, for some little details)...

Here are the references, straight from Wookieepedia:

- In the fourth episode of the series 'A Race to the Finish', the Droids end up at a race known as the "Boonta Race." A similar name was used for the podrace in 'Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace', which was known as the "Boonta Eve Classic".

- The swamp planet of Bogden is a planet visited by the droids in the series. In 'Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones', Jango Fett says that he was "hired by a man called Tyranus on the moons of Bogden."

- As confirmed by StarWars.com, the wheel bike, which was Jann Tosh's vehicle as seen in the animated series, was also the type of vehicle that was the vehicle of choice for General Grievous in 'Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith', when in a chase with Obi-Wan Kenobi on Utapau.

- The diner in an episode of the series has a strong similarity to Dex's Diner as seen in 'Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones'.

- Toong from the series was given as the home planet for a species in the prequels.

- In the episode, 'The Pirates of Tarnoonga', the pirate caves on Tarnoonga bear a striking resemblance to the sinkhole grottos of Utapau as seen in 'Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith'.

Ok, but it's how I've said, just little details... that's all. When you see that on a "continuity" point of view, you easily understand that the EU is, for GL, a very secondary universe...
There are no real big references... The biggest one I've seen is Obi's line concerning Quinlan Vos. And that jedi was intended to be seen in ROTS, but has been cut...

Well, I must say that I really prefer themed reference books for each aspect (characters, species, vehicles,...) than a one big encyclopedia that would be with no doubt very incomplete, or at least with little articles with not enough infos...

The best way to have a very complete encyclopedia with a lot of infos is a web encyclopedia IMO. Unfortunately, the "Databank" of the official site is really small, and misses a lot of things from the EU. But, they have to sell books, so...

Oh, I've always loved that line! Everytime I hear it, I just laugh! It's so funny, and, I have to say it, so misplaced in the SW universe.

Another funny line in that scene is "Piloter dans l'espace, c'est autre chose qu'une moissoneuse-batteuse!"...

And yep, I also love the ESB line "Tu fous la merde partout...", grifter!

And the translation of "scoundrel" to "vaurien" is also great.

I totally agree with you! I've never understood those name translations. In a way, I think they have made some names more "Earthy", I mean near from real names. "Yan" instead of "Han" sounds like a name of Bretagne (french region), "Chico" sounds mexican,...
For C-3PO, I think they played on the similarities in the pronouciation, "6" in french is near of "3" in english than "3" in french, if you see what I mean.
For the "Millennium Condor", all I have to say is that I've never understood this change (and also "WTF?") ! Considering that it's named "le Faucon Millennium" in TESB and ROTJ...

Concerning the french voices, there are some troubles also. Recurrent secondary characters (like Wedge Antilles) change voice from an episode to another.
But the must disturbing is for the SE. In the Jabba scene in ANH (and in the little changes of dialogue in the Greedo scene), Han has not the same french voice that in the rest of the film. And when I say "not the same", it's really a big different voice! Too bad they didn't call back the original french voice, considering that he's still alive...

Well, all that to say that I always watch Star Wars in english with french subs, even if I've grown up with the french version that I like (really!), just for the voices...

I was thinking about the work of translation that has been made in France. It's not bad, really, but there are a lot of disturbing things concerning the various names of the Star Wars universe. Here are some examples:

Darth Vader -> Dark Vador (and so, all the Sith lords of the saga are "Dark xxx")
Han Solo -> Yan Solo
Chewbacca -> Chicktaba (only in ANH)
Chewie -> Chico (only in ANH)
The Millennium Falcon -> Le Millennium Condor (in ANH)
C-3PO -> Z-6PO (only in the OT)
R2-D2 -> D2-R2 (what have they smoked?...)
Alderraan -> Aldorande
The Death Star -> L'Etoile Noire (The Black Star)
Tarkin -> Tarkan
Jabba the Hutt -> Jabba le Forestier (!!!), "forestier" meaning "forester", I think they've translated the word "hut" in the first sense, and so though about the forest... how crazy!
Bantha -> Banthos
...

What do you think of that? Pretty weird, heh?
Note that the more affected episode is Star Wars (or ANH), and the PT has no real translation troubles.

So, I was wondering: how does the Star Wars names are translated in other non-english countries? I'm just curious... It could be funny...

There are some things that "disturbe" me in ESB:

- The giant space slug: that creature seems to close his mouth in a very slow speed, but just after the "mouth" shot, the slug moves very fastly when trying to eat the flying Falcon... pretty weird...

- During the torture scenes in Cloud City: Han is "electrified", in a way, and Chewie has to hear a very disturbing noize (oh, real torture!...

). But for Leia? What is her torture?

- in ROTJ, there is something I've never understood, even if I've read some pretty weird explanations. Why does the heroes in the Lambda shuttle have to ask for the deactivating of the "protector shield"? I though that shield was around the Death Star, and the heroes want to land on Endor, where there's just the shield generator. Maybe Endor itself has a shield, but in that case, where is the shield generator FOR Endor?...

- Darth Vader's helmet: in ESB, in the famous scene where we see the "naked" top of Vader's head, we clearly see that he has just the helmet on his head (considering he has the mask also), but in ROTJ, Luke takes of the helmet and we see another part under it, that hides the top of Vader's head. So, what's the deal with that?

- Another thing on the whole trilogy: it's not a real trouble for me, but I have to admit that I really admire the Wookiee language knowledge of Han... Some "growls" and "groar" from Chewie, and Han understands all... Amazing!

It would not be the same, just cause Firefly was a completely new universe, a new series, and was entirely depending on the "good" (huhum...) will of the Fox... we've seen the result...

But yeah, the "spirit" of that show was really cool, and would not have been the same with a big budget and a lot of GC action scenes.
BTW, just to say, I know that show for less than a year (before the release of Serenity) cause it has never aired in France. I've just heared of it in a Joss Whedon audio commentary on a Buffy episode. So, I've bough the 1st season on DVD (region 1 of course) and hopefully there's a french track on it (too bad there aren't french subs, which I would prefer...).
Anyway, all that to say that I've really enjoyed the show, and I was really sad that there weren't more seasons. End of the anecdote...

You know, I find very cool the fact that they (Lucasfilm guys) will be forced to make Star Wars stories with a low budget (I mean a big TV budget, but many less than the movie ones). A "low " budget is often a good point for imagination and creativity, cause we can't count on many "extra-spectacular" scenes (which are numberous in the PT).
And for a TV series spectator, he has to want to know more at the end of an episode, and the best way is to create good characters (which are not many in the PT...).

So, pretty "low" budget (for a Star Wars) + good characters = maybe a great thing!

C'mon guys, let that show a chance!
Many OT fans have been confused and disturbed by the PT because of (not only that but...) the unfamiliar context. I mean, if you look carefully, the OT has a very Western/Sci-Fi context, which was cool for the general atmosphere and for very "cow-boy" characters such as Han Solo. The PT, on the other hand, has a very Medieval-Knights/Sci-Fi context, which has a really "cleaner" (in the wrong sense) and "colder" atmoshpere.
For this series, going back to the source could be very ecxiting, if it's well done of course... Maybe it could become the "real" come-back of Star Wars that many OT fans wanted, who knows?

I've just one thing to say about it: wait and see!
