Info & Ideas: ESB and ROTJ Wishlist

Again, a couple more ideas:

- when R2D2 shoots the lightsaber into the air, and Luke is waiting with his hand in the air for it, this could be shortened just a little bit, so it would seem even more synchronized, a real Jedi move.
- of course, in the Vader-Emperor dialog in ESB, Vader must already know about being Luke's father! The actual dialog will normally depend on the available sources to use in the scene.
- now a bolder suggestion: emperor's minions could perhaps (if technically possible) changed from humans to neimoidians. There is plenty of neimoidian footage in the PT. This would be really a minor change since emperor's minions play no real role in the OT, but as neimoidian opportunistic nature suggests, they stay close to the ruling party - the emperor.

I completely agree with nohandluke's view on mystery of Bobba Fett. It is totally unnecessary to bring in his face from PT into OT. I also don't like Morrison's voice that much, but it is not that important to me. Some of you are distracted or even agitated by it, but I'm not. In the end, it will be Adywan's decision. By now I'm confident he will do all 6 movies well, in the sense that he will improve both OT and and make PT suck less.

As for the his upcoming edit, I do hope someone will seed a torrent as soon as possible. It tried playing around with newsgorups, got myself Alt.Binz for geting .nzb files, and then GrabIt for using those nzb files to download binaries, but so far it hasn't worked. The download is always stuck at 0%. I guess the reason is I should be subscribed to an Usenet account, not use the free Usenet servers found on the net. If someone could clarify this for me I'd be very grateful.

"Your mother once thought as you do."

I don't like this idea. It is unnecessary in my opinion. As stossmo said, some mention of her during Luke's and Leia's talk on Endor would be better. Maybe Oragana's told Lea some things about her mother, and also perhaps Lars and Beru told some things to Luke. No the truth of course, but certain things they thougt it was safe to tell.

I have no problem with VLC, it is a great player, invaluable for partial torrents downloads, and other tricky files. It is just that the combination I described above gives me the best possible DVD playback on my computer. In fact, I only use 2 players on my computer, MPC and VLC, there is no need for anything else.

I experimented a little and greatly improved DVD playback quality. I use the latest Media Player Classic, nVidia PureVideo mpeg2 decoder, and ffdshow for postprocessing (Blur&Noise reduction, upscale resize, with luminance and chroma sharpen, YV12 output). I had to tweak the settings a bit differently than suggested on the net, because my computer couldn't handle the load (but it came very close, very few frames dropped).

The improvement is huge! Your 'low quality' sample looks great. I can only imagine what the full quality video will look like

OK, I understand the 432px: PAL DVD is 720x576 in 16:9 aspect ratio. 2,35:1 AR of the same DVD is then 720x432. But why 1024x432, why the upscaling, if I set 'original size' in my player?

Wait a minute......... 1024/1,78 (16:9) = 576. So why does it say PAL DVD 720x576, 16:9 AR , when the 16:9 would be either 1024x576 or 720x404? Is it 720x576 minus the black bars, or is it 576 pure vertical resolution and they somehowe interpolate to get from 720 to 1024?

The dewback, from which the trooper steps down, has some strange colors on it's head. But than also the R2 unit, that passes the scene when Kenobi and Luke are stoped by the troopers, has a green stripe not red as everyone says. So what could be causing these two problems? The rest looks OK color-wise.

BTW, I like Vader's black eyes. My way of looking at this is, in SW3 when they put his mask on, the inside of the eyes looks red, and that is what his vision is going to be, but from the outside it is pure glossy black! It is intentionaly semi-transparent. You cannot see inside but he can see you.

I finally got home to watch this early present.

Adywan, this is just great, even at 2000 kb/s (that is for video only, isn't it?). At 6000 kb/s it will probably look amazing. The overall color correction is good! But what really stands out is the quality of the sound. It pops! The cantina music has an ambiance effect and can be clearly heard.

I personally like the trooper getting off a dewback. It is done really well, and fits into the scene. Also, slowly approaching Alderan is also excellent! Cantina creatures are perfect, especially Greedo. Now I really can't wait for the finished movie.

One technical question though. When I put 'original size' in Media Player Classic (or any other player), the video is quite noticeably bigger than half of my 1440px wide LCD. It looks like 1000px wide and 430px high (I made a screen shot and looked at the properties), although I know from the properties that the resolution of the file is 720x576. Shouldn't it the the original size on the screen be 720px wide? I still don't have all these thing quite worked out.

1000 x 430 is ratio 2,35:1, that is OK, but shouldn't the the resolution of the visible video (minus black bars at the top and bottom) be 720x306?

Damn, I got to a spa for 3 days, and right then you post the a major clip. They have internet in the rooms, and I had to check this thread and what do I see, couple of pages in one day. I read all the stuff and I almost wished I was home so I could watch it - but I know a massage later today will change my mind

Just watched ESB again. I must say, Yoda looks great, except for the eyes, they are too static, not always looking into the right direction, eyelids could also be slightly improved. I have noticed what bothered me the most - Yoda's ears. They shake all the time at the tips, which makes them look really unnatural.

-Also, the cockpit doors on Luke's Hoth fighter and even more on Luke's X-wing at Dagobah are wobbly/shaking like they were made of plastic. It looks cheap!

I knew I should have kept notes during the movie, now I feel I forgot all things I noticed that bugged me. Well, I'll have to watch it again!

- Imperial walkers on Hoth move very choppy, you can tell the use of stop motion technique.

- The sound the M. Falcon makes after failing to go to the light speed at the end of the movie, sounds to much like a malfunctioning car, probably intentionaly, but sounds off to me.

- Luke's jump from the carbon freezing hole is a little bit too fast.

- The 2 guards at the end of the scene where Vader leaves the bridge at the end of the movie, have those large stupid looking helmets. The could be erased. We already see a lot of personel, and I feel those over-sized helmets look horrible.

- When the general what's his name contacts Vader in his chamber via large screen, the transmission starts with a TV like static. I would change that to a clean transmission or something like that.

More to come

The 'performance' was perfect, and as you suggested, maybe just some facial movements. Try some and if it doesn't fit in, don't do it.

However I won't mind if he leaves him completely alone, and let's not crystal-gaze too much just yet.

You're right, it was Frank Oz, I already changed it. Anyway, I meant exactly what you said above.

Agreed. With all due respect to all you've done, the OT Yoda was nothing short of phenomenal and needs no updating.

Hey, don't get me wrong, I love Frank Oz's Yoda, I wasn't suggesting messing with that, I only thought some minor improvements (not like changing his face to CGI or anything like that), to make him even more natural and less a (though great looking) puppet, but in a way than wouldn't distract people or they wouldn't even notice. But hey, it is just and idea, nothing more.

There is another thread concerning ESB and ROTJ wish-list. I'm sure Adywan is going to take a break after ANH edit, but ESB and ROTJ edits should be much easier to do, first, there is less to change and second, he has gotten very proficient in editing techniques.

BTW, improved Yoda would be great

When Luke ignites the lightsaber in Kenobi's house, I see some king of cord or something in his sleeve under the sabe hilt?

I think Adywan already fixed this.

"61. Put the original Dianoga back in the trash compactor"

I don't remember Adywan writing this. Num. 61 in the list of changes on the first page of this thread does not say anything about Dianoga.

I was just checking out the 2004 DVD to see some differences and I must say that the light sabers really looked crappy. Adywan's improvements are really great here. And I hope he hasn't shown us even half the changes, because I would like to be surprised, you know that feeling like watching an almost completely new movie.
