Last web series/tv show seen

Just been watching a live action series on youtube based on Fallout called Fallout: Nuka Break.

It's the most impressive thing I've seen in a while - even compared to big budget hollywood stuff. - It even has a Doug Jones in it [Hellboy, el laberinto del fauno, etc]

you can check out the entire first season as one video here - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GcgxXnEVVyM

I assume they'll do similar with the second season at some point..

* there was an earlier fan film that spawned the series but i would personally recommend people skip that and check it out later if curious - the quality just isn't as good as the series. And it isn't really needed to explain things..

there's also a spin-off film called Red Star which was quite good, although the effects and make-up weren't quite as good as the series..

The Hobbit Part 2.

So much bloat.

It's hard to judge on it's own merits being the middle part of the story but it really felt like it dragged. I'll definitely be interested in what fan-editors do with this.

I DID like the newly created character of Tauriel [sp?] not so much the rest of the new stuff..

The To Do List

Utterly forgettable - with a few laughs. - But that IS what I expected going in so I can't really complain.

Riddick - extended edition [Director's cut?]

Good fun. If not for the flashbacks and references I could happily pretend chronicles never happened and be content.

This thread right here is for an edit by strangeland. It began as the Weyland shareholder edition and may end up being called Leviticus.

The rest of us have been contributing ideas and feedback. If my suggestions prove too radical for strangeland then I will most likely begin an edit of my own - if that happens I will begin a new thread so as not to confuse things further.

The idea behind moving the action to LV 426 is mainly too to alter the film to be more like i was originally intended. The early scripts had the story take place there and at one point the film was going to be called LV 426.

Originally Ridley wanted to do something focused on 'the guy in the chair' - what eventually became the Engineer, since that was one aspect of the franchise that hadn't really been explored. Along the way the film transformed from actual prequel to vague tie-in.

how about a dark ending where they never deploy the lifeboat, the engeneer never leaves the ship (as we find out, in alien, was facehugged), David dies with old man wayland, we are left with this (now moved) part of the transmission,

And Shaw finally gets to meet her maker.

Yeah, I never really took it in until recently but Shaw tells David that she wants to go to Paradise...that is where her father told her that people go when they die.

Maybe she enters into some sort of death coma ala vanilla sky and their further adventures are merely an afterlife fsntasy?..

there should be some thumbnails at the bottom for some black and white clips..

If i can figure out what fomats skydrive likes for streaming i'll try upload some stuff in decent quality.

Yeah, I'm hoping to ramp up the tension with a bit less gore porn. But then it may not be integral to the story if I start pulling out other stuff.

I'm hoping it's possible to imply that taking their helmets off in the temple is what brought death and disease upon them - not David pouring black goo into Charlie's drink.

but then the medpod set actually looks really cool when you get rid of the horribl blue tones over everything.

Just a lot of tinkering at the moment, taking inspiration from strangeland and others.

What are some things that bothered you about the film?

Did you check out the link? - the clips ARE pretty rough but it's a start, i guess.

Ultimately I want something that feels more at home in the Alien saga rather than the pretentious wank of "we had a better idea.."

The original script is something I thought was interesting and would have made a fun movie - before lindelof. [it's hard to blame him though, Ridley made some really stupid decisions.

I'm happy with vaguely implying certain things like the mission going to LV 426.

My biggest problem with the story is Shaw. You can't just have her survive something like that despite all odds and tell your audience that she's a strong female lead. Noomi also struggles with the script a bit and her accent varies.

She's also an absolute bitch to people.

A lot of the plot is also geared towards birthing the creature at the very end, but it amounts to nothing - a sequel will almost certainly follow Shaw and david leaving the creature absolutely alone on the planet.

I'd like more focus on weyland the company and weyland the man.

Something else that bugs me is the lack of originality, it's all been done before. People seem to love the c-section / medpod scene but something similar was already done in Alien Resurrection.

I want to show a lot more of guy pearce throughout the film, get rid of the horrible colour grading, have Vickers stay on the Prometheus at the end - she didn't deserve the ending she got, trim characters being jerks, trim holloway being upset - they've found something amazing, even if dangerous, fix a lot of goofs and errors and I want to set things up as a prequel to Alien.

i've also got a bunch of conflicting ideas that i haven't made up my mind on.

Started doing a little tinkering. I guess i'll start up a new thread if strangeland doesn't touch base soon, but for now I guess i'll put this here -

http://sdrv.ms/1gMrBwb [my skydrive]

Anyone wanna check these out? - they might not load in the browser but you should be able to download them. these are pretty rough and unrefined, just some of the first few ideas I had. I've got some grander ideas i've not tackled yet.

I've also found a lot of good stuff buried in the documentaries that I haven't incorporated yet. mostly alternate dialogue and HD alternate angles..

in the last few weeks i've looked at a few other Prometheus fanedits and it seems that none of them really tackle the parts of the film that I have issues with. I'm seriously looking at cutting out things that a lot of people seem to look meaning there might not be much of an audience for these ideas outside of myself..

at this point strangelands version seems the most interesting to me, if not as radical as i'm considering...hopefully we hear from him soon.

EDIT: just noticed that one of the clips isn't up yet, i'll see if i can sort that now - it's a sequence where i've been trying to remove David vry obviously infecting holloway's drink..

:( sadness.

It can be a bit of fun if you play with friends but the AI is terrible. Aso, it's advertised as free but you only get one character - if you want the others you have to buy them in packs. My friend got a download code and it was just the same guy in a different outfit.

I hope this isn't Microsoft testing some new sort of demo / freeware model!

Really not impressed with it.

My [early] thoughts on the Xbone - 3 days in..

The interface

It could still use a little refinement and it will probably evolve over the next few years but already it's far better than the current 360 interface. It DOES take a little getting used to since they've re-organised a lot of stuff. The basic features are pretty much all thier own apps now, it's fairly compartmentalised but it's quick and easy to move between them all.

I quite like being able to scan a QR code with the Kinect rather than typing in a 25 digit serial number - and there's no chance of typos.

Avatars carry over from 360 but there really isn't a place for them currently, I don't think they'll be missed if they are phased out.

Now that I've got my bearings a bit, I find I can get around pretty quickly using voice commands.

the video / entertainment apps are decent - sort of more of the same - but it's pretty handy to be able to list them as channels in the tv guide - i've not used that for TV actual yet, though.

Overall there's a lot less clutter and it's a lot more fluid. There is still a bit of loading some of the time but it's not like the headache of the NXE on 360 hardware - almost constant loading / waiting.

You can message people and see their details across the 360 - ONE divide but you cannot party / chat which sucks a little.

The audio quality in general seems much better with voice chat - both with Kinect and Headset.

The games

In getting rid of the DRM 'features' that upset [just about] everyone they also got rid of the useful feature of only needing the disc to install a game. This is where the system falls down a bit. Take Forza 5 for example - after a lengthy install that filled up 33GB of my 500gb hard drive - The game wanted a 6GB update - ON LAUNCH DAY - and I still need to have the disc in the tray when I want to play it. Kind of a worst of both worlds approach.

No more racing home and popping in a game right away - it's put a disc in and go have dinner while it does its thing.

Forza is a lot of fun though. I also picked up Battlefield 4 and Assassin's Creed 4. Both are good fun and look great. I fell out of love with Assassin's Creed early on with the repetitive nature of things but I'm quite enjoying part 4 [I'm pretty sure there's quite a few more than 4 of them already?]

Overall

It really is a system that's designed to go hand in hand with internet access and if you don't have decent broadband you probably aren't going to have a great time.

As an entertainment hub it works great but the system really needs MORE games and apps asap.

oh, and Killer Instinct suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucks.

Hmm, good point. Henriksen is the face of Weyland in time periods before AND after Prometheus.

He plays a prominent role in Mass Effect 3 [lesser in the previous]. Maybe dialogue could be pinched and repurposed somehow.

As far as sound effects, I've got a clean recording of the Nostromo alarm and some stuff ripped from the movie - computer terminal sounds.

Looking for a cleaner version of the trailer sound effect.

Pretty sure I've got sound effects from the AVP games on an external hard drive somewhere - but the most iconic stuff wouldn't really fit in Prometheus - Weaponry and xenomorph screams. Maybe the cool hydraulic door sounds could be inserted someplace.

Ripley said: Did interest in this just drop sharply while I was away?

Guess I'll just keep rambling for a bit.

Been scouring the blurays and there's quite a bit of stuff that may be useful, Sadly there's some interesting stuff that'd be unuseable - like extended scenes but with crewmen standing in the shot or ridley talking over the actors.

There are some good alternate shots that should be easy enough to insert as well as clean [enough] dialogue from multi angle scenes.

Example: the scene where Milburn and Fifield runs longer. Milburn says his fingers are still numb - which explains why he is shaking his hand furiously, then he goes on to say he hasn't been in stasis that long and Fifield comments that nobody has.

The scene with David on the bridge - where he is holding the basketball - pulls back and with outstretched arms David says "I am king of the world" - but this may have just been Fassbender dicking about.

If I find the time I might go through and catalogue all that stuff.

I was browsing browsing youtube yesterday and discovered some promo stuff from the last AVP video game with narration by Lance Henriksen. If a clean enough snippet could be found it might b fun to replace the Weyland Hologram intro with LH saying the "building better worlds" line. Might make a fun link to AVP and at this point i'd like to see that just to spite Ridley ;)

Hey guys. Haven't been around much lately but I've been thinking about Prometheus quite a bit over the past few weeks.

Has there been any progress lately, or are things on the back burner - doesn't feel like it's been as long as it has since we were last discussing the edit.

I flicked through this thread and then went and watched Prometheus - in black and white. Even without changes it was a bit more enjoyable - I've been toying with the idea of doing a black and white edit mostly for myself just to get a version I'm happy with.

all things considered, the ending is still a mess. I've been trying to think of a way to make the awakening of the engineer be satisfying in some way.

My sketchy idea is to have him explain to David [using the alternate version where he speaks] Just what his mission / goal was.

It's already clear by his later actions that he's not happy. This is probably the only spot that I could justify the sacrifice sequence.

I don't like the idea of the Engineers creating humans - but I do like the idea of them taking on a sort of 'guardians of the galaxy' type of role.

- Ridley has mentioned the idea of the engineers as being gardeners - i think this was from an earlier time where a greater focus would be on their terraforming / word building..

So, what if he explains to David that the mission was to prune back mankind a little - not total obliteration. Maybe they know how dangerous humans can be and it's more a case of protectiing others from us?

Then of course Weyland steps in and tries to plead his case - asking for more life.

Then I had another idea - What if the Engineer places his hands on David's head / face as before but then we see a white flash / montage that basically convinces him on the spot that Humans have gotten out of control and compels him to try finish the mission alone.

- some of the viral footage could be useful here, basically a jumbled sequence of David's memories and Weyland archival footage - there's some good stuff in the David8 viral clip - David saying things like 'war' with a tear rolling down his face.

so the Engineer kills the humans mostly because they stand in his way.

The other big thing I've been considering is how the characters get infected. My idea at the moment is that anyone who breathes the air in the 'temple / tomb' will be infected. This could help in tying in to ALIEN - if this is to be LV 426 then the engineer will also be infected - unbeknownst to him, looking at the holograms there is no urgency when they go into stasis, so whatever killed the flight crew happened while he was asleep.

So shaw uses the medpod to cut a creature out of herself and everyone else dies before they reach this point. Charlie's rapid degradation is a result of the infection combined with alcohol poisoning and Fifield is mutated by the lake of black goo...and drugs.

'something' bursts out of the Engineer offscreen before the Nostromo crew find him. He dies in the crash or is trapped. I don't buy that Shaw could survive an encounter with him, especially when he is angry and specifically hunting her down.

I did a few quick tests and it seems I can remove the part where David visibly infects Holloways drink - but I've also had an idea to expand the scene where David talks to Weyland while wearing the dream helmet.

I'd like to use footage from the start of the tedtalk - the zarathustra bit, there are some good shots where you can see Weylands mouth so it should be easy to dab in some dialogue...and maybe add in something like "what would Charlie do?" - from his later scene with Shaw.

I watched another edit called Maculate Conception - which i think is still WIP. There were some changes I didn't like but one thing I did - The editor created a new hybrid out of both versions of the scene where Shaw is in her quarters and Holloway comes in, they argue then awkwardly start to get it on.

I haven't tackled that but I've been toying with re-ordering the Holloway scenes so that he does most of his drinking after they have an argument - David meets him in the mess hall and things are a bit more ambiguous.

I've also been toying with a new opening / closing -

I like the idea of starting with Shaw heading for the lifeboat, she starts looking for supplies until she hears a sound and grabs an axe - the sound she hears is the creepy wailing sound from the promo trailers of this and alien that doesn't appear in any of the films*. She moves through into the main lounge area and sees a recording of the Weyland speech from 60 years earlier.

then we cut to weyland fullscreen then to David sitting in the lifeboat watching the same clip instead of Lawrence of Arabia - but still cut to him finishing the line 'the trick wiliam potter is not minding that it hurts' [rather than just repeating it]

then later later on when we get back to this point we hear Weyland going on and on as Shaw cautiously moves through to where the Trilobite is, sees it, freaks out and runs out side.

No over the top engineer vs shaw battle, no awkward face rape, no pointless introduction of deacon.

* riffing on the idea of attaching that sound to the Trilobite - what if we hear that after the medpod pulls it out of her - BUT blended with the sound of a human baby crying? - that might prove unsettling in a good way if done right.

I've got some other ideas that i've been madly scribbling down in a notebook. What do you guys think of that stuff fora start.

I'd like to close the film with some of young Weyland. I hate Shaws message at the end. I'd rather put that at the beginning - edited and if at all possible combined with bits of the transmission the nostromo picks up.

something along the lines of "My name is Elizabeth Shaw...if you're reading this transmission make no attempt to come to it's point of origin..there is only death here now" - there are some promo clips with suitable dialogue to steal from - Crew files, quiet eye etc.

I also feel like the briefing scene can be salvaged by trimming out half of what Weyland says and ALL of what Shaw says.
