Ideas and Suggestions for :Star Trek The Motion Picture (True Fan Edit)
Time

I did not do much work tonight. It was a "LOST" night.

Understandable. I'm putting a lot of thought into the early stuff right now so hopefully that all works out well.

I am very happy with how it plays out when I assemble the scenes back together.

If it at least plays like 'star trek' - i'll be very impressed.

Have you put much thought into the prolgue at the moment? I dig the TOS montage idea but don't personally have access to any of that stuff atm.

Anybody working on prologue concepts?

I wish i knew something for Star trek and the original aesthetic you want to achieve there... sorry but i am JJ's generation here.

I really like to help and make mockups because i see the movies from an artistic pov and not from a fan's pov.

Thanks to johnny he brought up excellent artistic skills and and ideas that i admire and like.

Bring it up chief :D

Im looking this topic ;)

Thanks Angel, that means a lot coming from you.

We really just need a different shaped viewscreen and walls, as this room is used later in the movie.  TrekCore has HD shots you could base them on.

In any case I am liking the idea of having the viewscreen just be floor to ceiling ala Star Trek 4.

I've sourced some more Klingon footage and I'm planning to assemble a leaner and cleaner version of my BOP vs V'ger clip. I might have a tinker today and see what I can come up with.

Fortunately the various Klingon bridges in Enterprise are almost identical, which makes sense for television - unlike the major changes from Star Trek 3 to Star Trek 4 - when it was supposed to be the SAME Bird Of Prey.

Oh and I found my copy of Elite Force but having a listen to the audio it seems that the Klingons only spoke English.

Hey guys...I made a matte.

I couldn't find an appropriate shot to mirror this token Star Trek visual...

but then noticed an almost identical bridge shot in a different Klingon themed episode. Long story short, that episode had what i need to I roughed together a quick matte mockup which should allow us to put ANYTHING into the view area easily...

There are at least 2 shots i can think of offhand where this could be useful.

FF, Your frind may find this useful...

one more concept, just for fun...

I never really liked that effect but I guess it's worth seeing if it can be done well...

I was thinking about maybe trying to show the crew getting 'digitized' and the ship getting destroyed. There is footage of a BOP breaking apart, although it would need to be composited into the cloud.

Maybe we could take the original idea and add some enhancements, as well as enhancing the d7 cruisers?

Give it a try I guess...

EDIT: That reminds me, If we do indeed show the klingon BOP at warp then the visuals should be comparable to warp effects elsewhere in the film - whether original or enhanced.

Thanks for the PM Polarity - sent you a reply.

http://www.ex-astris-scientia.org/articles/orbital-office.htm - They really did get some use out of this thing!

Gibberish?  Lifting dialog?  My vote is to put another call out and re-record dialog in Klingon!  Certainly we can find someone on BBS or somewhere who knows enough to give us dialog to fit whatever we want.

When I say that I refer only to TMP - where they made up a few bits and pieces. It wasn't until Star Trek 3 that a language was properly developed.

I'm sure you're right though, there are probably much more people out there speaking Klingon than Esperanto.

Really all we need is some stuff that sounds gruff and guttural - they aren't reciting shakespeare here after all ;)

I like the proof of concept, maybe a little less "inside the ship". It'd be awesome to have just a ship entering the cloud and getting blasted, but that would be hard to do with with visuals we have.

Well, it would be impossible, otherwise I'd be all for it...

maybe, I was hoping to just use the film dialogue but i don't know.

Given that the spoken Klingon in TPM was gibberish anyway, maybe we could simply lift dialogue from elsewhere regardless of context?

Can anyone remember if there were spoken klingon lines in any of the games? specifically something like the Elite force series..

Obviously you wouldn't want to use a very  recogniseable voice like that of Christopher Lloyd.

Sounds great FF, I'll try to finish up the other bits and pieces i'm playing with. Then at least we have a good starting point...

If anyone else wants to take a look at my intro proof of concept, I'll throw it onto youtube for now.  - Just bear in mind this is extremely rough!

EDIT -

Here's a quick and dirty mockup to apply more 'cinematic' colouring to the rather 'television' look of the source footage...

I've ripped scenes from a handful of episodes. There are quite a few shots but many aren't really of use without a fair bit of compositing, if you look closely I've painted out the enterprise in the shot above.

If FanFiltration is satisfied with the direction of things I will look at building any specific shots from various elements.

The major issue is that a lot of shots don't run for very long, but there are one or two sweeping shots.

The last version looks great. The "pinkie" version almost like the Nexus from Generations

The "pinkie" shot is directly from Enterprise. It's not a creative choice, just a source we are considering using.

tweaking the upper grilles to make them smaller is needed.

I wouldn't be too concerned about that, by the era of the motion picture this ship is a relic. Any inaccuracies could easily be explained away - I'm not trying to pass of a 22nd century BOP as a 23rd century BOP. not ATM anyway.

I do appreciate the feedback though. And if you guys have other ideas, let's hear them...

Star Trek: Phase II: For real this time.

Star Trek: Then next Generation...gets demoted by The Old Generation, who aren't sorry. Not one damn bit.

The other films titles generally are something relating to the plot. Something to consider - although the plot is meant to be a little mysterious.

FF, I've just been listening to the Nemesis score and there's a lot of little incidental pieces of music that aren't really distinct in terms of theme but convey a decent atmosphere. It might be a good place to check if you're still stuck...

Re: Sound effects, I've got some stuff - check over the Generations stuff and then let us know if there's anything else you need, anything specific...

FF, I was also meaning to ask you what quality sources you were working with [framerates etc.] - the dvd I own is PAL and interlaced and it looks awful.

Yet another idea, Majel Barrett needs to be to ship's computer voice. It's a tradition TMP broke with.

I guess she missed out on getting two paychecks ;)

Re: the titles - it's a proof of concept...if the classic font FF wants, the classic font FF gets. I was also considering tinkering with the TOS titles font.

time for a montage...

As you can see they all have unique elements, which is a plus..and there are also some elements in common.

My feeling is that the beginning should flow, rather than being a series of disjointed segments. Which is a part of the problem with the film as it stands [at least IMO].

Would you guys be interested in meeting up for a group IM/chat? maybe during a weekend...not sure on the time differences between us.

I was interested in knowing everyone's time zones anyway, since our schedules seem to be way off.  Indiana, EST here.  Johnny's in Australia, if FF is in the UK, we're pretty much on incompatible time schedules. ;-)

Also, looking through the DVD, I think the Blu-ray looks so much better.  The classic scene (for me) of the Enterprise orbiting to leave earth with the sun peeking around behind it is so dark on the DVD!  I'll show you what I mean later.

Well that is why I suggested a weekend so it's not so bad if someone had to be up late at night...Just putting it out there.

I'm up for it if anyone else is [I'm GMT+10]

Besides we all seem to be here and posting within a similar timeframe.

Oh and there still might be a way to 'hide' the matte lines without having to correct them - maybe by adding a sort of cloudy foreground...

Re: the title font, I just find the old style really awkward looking. It's just a concept. anything can be tweaked.

for that hull shot i just made a new layer over the top that was blue and set it to hue - rather than adjusting the source image. I made sure the side decals were still red and then just roto'd the dish like you would a lightsaber.

Great to hear FF. I've been looking back over your notes, and I was just thinking that maybe you could substitute the Reliant era craft for the epsilon 9 station - including it's fate - rather than trying to show both.

If that doesn't work in the grand scheme of the story, I understand, I just thought i'd mention it...

I guess this is the time to throw all ideas and concerns on the table, no matter how ludicrous.

And another thought occured...what about using a picture of an older Stephen Collins, implied to be the elder Decker?

I know the role was already portrayed by a different looking actor, but James bond looks different almost every time we see him. And if you could photoshop him into a higher ranking costume than the younger Decker currently holds, it might be enough...

and to go off on a bit of a tangent [which i haven't really thought out, so be gentle..] - What about starting with a Miranda class vessel [ala reliant] IN klingon space on some sort of covert mission. they get V'ger'd and the Enterprise is rushed in to rescue her [all hush hush like]. This would give the Klingons a fine reason to attack the Enterprise later...

Regarding Kirk's arrival, Not sure if you've looked at this already but i would strongly suggest trimming down this seqence...It seems a little jarring, the focus is on things that are irrelevant and the shuttles seem to appear out of nowhere...

I would suggest losing 1,3,4.

Just tinkering away after work...

Here's an opening concept.

And here's my idea re: the mattes. As you can see the results are less than stunning.

For some shots it's a lot easier to hide simply by adjusting the contrast, which I see they did on the Bluray realease...

That's pretty sad about Andrew Koenig - I hope they find him alive and well. From what i've read he seemed to be acting a bit different the last he was heard from, maybe he just wants to be alone for a bit?

Found a site today with some interesting details for TMP and Phase II.there are also some concept images and set photos!

http://www.ottens.co.uk/forgottentrek/phase2_2.php

doubleofive, Great transporter concept, I think i would only suggest adding a LOT more light glow.

In these shots from ST3, the tansporter pads light up pretty brightly even after the transporting is done...

Would you guys be interested in meeting up for a group IM/chat? maybe during a weekend...not sure on the time differences between us.

^ The mattes in the film are truly terrible - there's a similar shot i noticed earlier where the camera pans and the Earth moves but the matte behind it does NOT. see attached...

They also used the exact same approach and docking shots in TWOK - bad mattes and all! I can't believe i never noticed that before.

adding a 'blink-and-you'll-miss-it' Borg reference could be kind of cool, a bit of a nod that doesn't interfere withg the story being told.

Here's a shot from the comics where they mention Borg tech being used on the Narada...

Did anyone happen to see the TOS fan created series 'Phase II' pilot episode? My memory of it is a little hazy but they had William Windom as an older Decker who had been thrown back in time rather than killed and wound up living on Earth.

I don't know if any of that is useful but it was an interesting idea.

I also started playing with rebuilding the main titles..

I never liked the font they used and aside from Nimoy, Kelley and Shatner the rest of the main cast were crammed onto a single title card....
