Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)

Now in the minds of Lucasfilm, do you think they feel it's advantageous to go with 12 discs over 6, so that Documentaries can be added, as past DVDs have done, or would they eliminate the theatrical versions to have the set be 6 discs.

Ideally, they would see the logic in releasing both trilogies seperately, eliminating the need for 12 discs in one set.

Also eliminating the need to charge people for things they don't want.

One change I would like to see would be having some Jedi wearing armor as in the Clone Wars series (not to tie in with the EU but to give some of the Jedi a medieval knight look) and also have some of the Jedi wearing pretty much the same outfit Luke wears in ROTJ (making that out to be an established uniform of some kind).

The idea that the Jedi wear moisture farmer robes all the time seems a bit odd.

I'm pretty sure I remember seeing concept art of battle weary Jedi at some point - things like Ki Adi wearing an eye patch, it was an interesting idea that they obviously decided not to go with.

EDIT: it seems they made an action figure based on this concept - see here:

O.k., we need some ideas on how to better end this turd.

We're gonna need more turd polish...

Nothing yet, I've been out of the loop for a bit but i'll do some brainstorming. I have to say I'm interested in any borg related slant, although I could see why people wouldn't want to go in that direction.

The plot of the film as it stands is kind of thin and it can get frustrating to be left hanging, some sort of satisfying revelation might just elevate this into a worthy part of the early film saga.

DOOM: knee deep in the edit. (* unfinished project *)
Time

Okay I've been working on some motion comic style concepts to use for the flashbacks throughout - I chose the style since these segments will be exposition heavy and I'd have a lot more freedom.

Here's the first realised concept, the others are still pretty sketchy. Please keep in mind it is ROUGH and of course motionless atm.

The first major flashback being what used to be the prologue scene. The idea being that as the main story flows in a linear fashion the flashbacks start with the most recent and move backward to the earliest event - and the greatest reveal.

I'm still toying with visual styles. Here's the original shot for reference...

DOOM: knee deep in the edit. (* unfinished project *)
Time

Okay guys I've been hard at work on this and it seems I have a story structure that I'm fairly satisfied with. I know it's been a while and I haven't shown much but the scope of the project just keeps on growing.

I've combined a few ideas into a central concept that the story is more like a comic with live action elements, starting out with a main title reveal as a comic front page cover.

Basically I'm planning to use motion comic style segments for exposition that wasn't there before – for flashback sequences that work further into the backstory each time and reveal more of the events that in turn lead to the start of the proper story.

I AM still working on a Grindhouse / Exploitation style for this thing so above all else it has to be FUN, I'd just prefer if it also made sense, and if it comes across as a little preachy, I'm okay with that.

This should also be useful since I plan to reintroduce ideas from the early games, the id design documents and the early screenplay that didn't make it into the finished film.

1 Olduvia is not on MARS – it is on EARTH.

There is mention of Olduvai in the film – I believe this carries over from earlier versions of the script where the final reveal was that they had been on EARTH the whole time and the human race was living on some other world. What is interesting is that Olduvai gorge in Tanzania is commonly referred to as "The Cradle of Mankind."

Olduvai is used in the science-fiction movie Doom as a name of research facility on Mars. It was built around the ancient subspace gateway, linked with a similar device that was excavated on Earth. The plot is based on the theory that life on Earth originated from Mars.

I'll be scrapping this idea since it's BEEN DONE in other movies and stories about Mars. It's a cliché in storytelling even though there is nothing to prove or even suggest it. And it has no real impact on the story of Doom anyway.

This begs the question of what happened on EARTH which is still a concept with a few holes i'm plugging. And hopefully there will be a nice nod to doom II: Hell on Earth in there somewhere...

2 the UAC is not just another cliché 'evil' corporation.

This sort of thing gets boring and the scientists in the film seem to have no clue what they are messing with – In my sequence of events they had to infect their patient [Stahle] in order to test whether their c24 cure was working. And it does work, they just didn't get a chance to test it before Stahle broke loose and went on a rampage. This helps make sense later when Sam injects John with the c24 serum and his wounds are healed and everyone else who was infected was mutated – in this way I can remove the utterly stupid plot point of the virus choosing whether it mutates the host based on their demeanor.

3 The ARK

having a name like that makes sense but in the actual film it has to be coincidence since the prologue tells us the humans have no idea what happened to those that built it.

The teleportation itself with be coloured to more closely resemble those from the original games and the interior will be a token wormhole style view similar to that seem in Doom 3. Basically green with bright yellow and white flashes.

4 UAAF

In the film when they arrive at Olduvai, Portman says “why can't UAC rent-cops-deal with this bullshit” - which I'll have to remove since now they basically ARE the UAC rent-a-cops. One of the original ideas for the early games was that the marines would have been working for the United Aerospace Armed Forces. As far as I can tell I just need to remove all mention of “RRTS” in dialogue and maybe throw uaaf into some on screen text.

5 Tei Tenga

Since the dead planet is EARTH I needed the 'home' planet to be someplace else - Tei Tenga is a fictional moon or planet where Doom was originally supposed to take place during its first and third episodes, according to Tom Hall's preliminary design document for the game.

There's probably much more but off the top of my head those are some major set pieces I am working with. If I have time i'll try add some recent pics later...

Halo Legends - I am amazed at how terrible this was. I was expecting average at best - it's terrible at best!

This I assume will make halo fans feel like George Lucas must feel about the Star Wars holiday special.

I get the feeling they tried to copy the success of the Animatrix to an extent but it seems they didn't bother to steal any of the really good ideas that made that a fun collection of stories.

the only decent thing was the music but that wasn't original - it was lifted from other [better] halo productions.

stay away.

Well Titan A.E. ripped off of star wars, lensman, flash gordon and god knows what else.  Not too original.

Oh yeah totally forgot When worlds collide.

So it's only okay when Star Wars does it?

Just watched Cargo and liked it quite a bit.

The story went downhill a little bit somewhere in the middle but the visuals were impressive which kept me immersed in the film.

There is a great orchestral version of TOS theme (and suite from "The Cage") on a CD called "Time Warp" by Erich Kunzel conducting the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra. It also contains a cover of TMP theme/Klingon battle that is excellent.

And, I own it. *grin*

I don't hear no Klingon theme, nevertheless IT IS AWESOME.

Unless the version i listened to is different. FF, please check your copy, see if it does or does not include the Klingon theme.

On the [TMP] soundtrack I have, the main theme plays out like in the movie which could be an edited version.

re: the TMP proluge - I'm not entirely sure but I think it's ONLY in the Director's cut - in short you haven't missed much, really. It's a very slowly zooming starfield - moving away, and some slowly paced music playing.

after that we fade to the Paramount logo and the main titles.

Since FanFiltration was considering adding a new text based prologue anyway, it was suggested that a new sequence be assembled from TOS footage to Imply the ship and crew returning home after the '5 year mission'

Ziz, The major strength of playing a Prologue [at least in this instance] is that we can bring people up to speed, then go off and show the main titles and imply a passage of time. Thus when we get back to our main characters any difference of appearance [greying hair, etc] is no big deal.

There is also a lot of TMP era stuff to cram into the start of the movie, so mixing in TOS era stuff might get confusing.

It's my understanding that FanFiltration wants to intercut the main titles with the refitting of the enterprise, I think in part so we can get rolling once the story starts proper without stumbling quite so much.

and Re: the Shatner clip there, I agree the original sounds 'good enough' as it is. It serves a purpose without giving anything away, at least from what i've heard.

It's an interesting idea, and I like it. Although personally I don't really like the idea of using the TMP main theme before showing the TMP main titles.

If we go along with the idea that we are moving form the realm of TOS to TMP then the prologue should feel like TOS on the big screen...

Although it might be an idea to close the prologue with the 'final frontier' speech and TOS theme then move into the TMP theme as the main titles begin.

EDIT - I just realised 005 just mentioned this.

Doubleofive, Yes that was my thinking, New prologue with Old prologue music - tweaked if needed, then the Paramount logo, then the main titles with main theme reveal.

of course we should look at all of these ideas and decide what works for the film.

As the TMP theme is reprised a few times within the movie already my feeling is that we should hear it less often rather than more, that way it should have more impact when we do hear it.

as for my concept version of the main theme - yes i'll share it but let me tinker with it some more first...I did use some of it in the klingon conept I posted on youtube.

I really don't know how that would fit..I'd be open to suggestion but I would suggest sticking to Goldsmith stuff.

re: the Prologue - what about just keeping the existing prologue music? Other than that I agree that it should probably be something associated with the show, It should be an impressive reveal when the movie theme begins.

it felt weird getting this new theme and then changing it again with ST2, only for it to re-emerge later.

Well, it WAS the Motion Picture theme that later got reprised elsewhere, just like the title fonts, not so much a definitive "this is what star trek is now" theme.

That said i've been tinkering with rebuilding a version of the intro and Klingon theme from TMP using more recent cues [mostly from star treks 5 and 8] - I'm attempting to keep it as close as possible to the TMP version.
