Someone wanted me to fix their daughter's computer, so last night was my first extended time with Windows 8. You know what, after the 20 minute learning curve, I kind of like it. You have to think of it like booting into a giant start menu, which you can then close to get back to normal. I search for all of my programs in my Win7 start bar, so searching for everything in Win8 was just a matter of going to the opposite side of the screen.

People give MS crap all the time, but at least they have the balls to try different things. Everyone decried the Ribbon interface in Office, I was happy that MS wasn't just changing fonts and calling it a day. It's hard to change the way people work, even if it is more efficient. MS tries, and sure they end up going back on a lot of their ideas, but they tried.

The layout does have some great ideas but it's far from intuitive. Once you're used to it all things do move smoothly.

My frustration stems from using a touch based interface on a desktop PC. hopefully 8.1 will fix that. At the moment I'm exclusively using touch enabled device and it's pretty quick to get around using your fingers.

So far it has handled everything I've thrown at it either as well as or better than Windows 7.

The start screen is actually a handy way of having quick access to whatever you want, although I am waiting for 8.1 to fully configure it the way I want. The live tiles are so large that I only fit a handful on screen at once - even the zoomed out view only shows some of what I have pinned.

I went to GenCon this past weekend. It was great fun, but we nerds certainly fit the "smelly and lacking social skills" stereotype.

I did some light cosplay. Friday I wore my homemade BSG jacket and undershirts (I couldn't fit into the pants). Saturday morning I wore a white shirt and red tie to cosplay as Cole from www.pvponline.com (my wife wore a black t-shirt to go as Jade from the same comic). We met the creator, who was overjoyed that we made the effort. Saturday night I wore a TOS Redshirt and my old thick rimmed glasses, not to be a Redshirt, but to cosplay as the drummer for Five Year Mission (www.fiveyearmission.net), which he appreciated.

If you wore a red shirt and lived to tell us about it then you did it wrong.

And shouldn't there have been a "echo" of Soran running around in there somewhere?

Good point, that.

The movie has some good moments and has a lot of boxes to check but the logic of the nexus falls apart if you try to make sence of it.

I don't hate the movie but it definitely falls short of it's potential. It quite likely had to do with the crew spreading themselves thin over mutiple projects.

I can appreciate it for laying the groundwork for First Contact - a movie that really floats my boat.

finally finished watching In The Flesh - there are only 3 episodes but i've been slack.

I don't want to say too much other than I really enjoyed it.

I've been getting into a bunch of zombie themed stuff lately, mostly through coincidence, so it's good when you see something that manages to stay fresh.

here's a quick summary I stole from tv.com -

In the world where In the Flesh takes place, the dead rose from their graves, ate human brains, got better, were rehabilitated through treatment and counseling, and then rejoined society, where they now live—with the help makeup and colored contact lenses—as if they'd simply had a bad case of the chicken pox (the show refers to their condition as "Partially Deceased Syndrome"—PDS). But at the same time, untreated zombies roam freely and cause serious problems.

There's more to it than that but I don't want to spoil anything.

Yeah Bitch, Spoilers!

Since Breaking Bad is now on the home stretch I figured it might be nice to have a one stop thread for us to post thoughts, theories and such.

Are you BBaddicted?

So we're 2 episodes deep into the final 8 and the end is coming fast. I've been talking with friends about how we think it's going to end - Purely for fun, we'll probably all be way wrong.

At first I was like -

Walt is probably buying that M60 to go up against Hank and Co.

But then I was like -

If he really has gone full Heisenberg then it's probably equally likely that he is going after former associates like Todd (aka Meth Damon) and Lydia. Erase anyone with links to Heisenberg.

I've been re-watching the flash-forwards looking for any hints /clues that I hadn't noticed before.

In the first clip I noticed that he looks bald ( the classic Heisenberg look) in the id that he shows to the waitress so he has at least been using the id (or planning to use it) before he grew his hair out.

previous observation - he leaves a $100 tip for a free meal - that he didn't even eat.

In the second clip I just assumed at first that he was just trying to recover the ricin for fear of someone finding it - and having left town in a hurry but now it seems like he may be planning on using it.

it's a bit hard to tell because I'm not sure if we are looking at Walt or Heisenberg.

if it really is his birthday then a lot can have happened since most of the series has taken place over the course of a year.

I'm also watching Talking Bad which has been a good bit of fun so far and is a good wind down after the seriousness of BB. Apparently Samuel L Jackson will be on next week.

The Great Gatsby. Good flavour (sic) but felt a bit flat in the middle. I felt I enjoyed the story when it was following Nick but at times when he's on the sidelines I began to lose interest.

3 Balls.

GI Joe 2. What is up with the Rock? he is freaking huge. he is literally twice the man he used to be.

Joss Whedon should have put him in a Ruffalo wig and cast him as the Hulk. That said, I feel like his acting has improved a great deal over the years.

mindless fun. 2 balls.

The Host. Great style, very little story. I'm not surprised given the source (author of twilight) but it felt like it had real potential at the start. A bit of a shame. Waste of a great cast.

1 ball.

10 Years. It wasn't a bad movie but I was expecting something very different. The trailer paints it as a slapstick type comedy when really it is more of a romantic dramedy.

It's an ensemble film about a 10 year high school reunion. It's something that a lot of people can relate to, and there are characteristics we all probably recognize but I feel like it would have been better served if the focus was shifted more towards two characters who spend most of the film on the sidelines, only to take centre stage towards the end.

2 balls ( could have been better with different editing)

I WAS planning to go see The World's End but it would appear that it's finished it's run at my local (I hate Village / Roadshow). It may still be on at my nextmnearest cinema but that's a 45 minute drive away. Might have to get the boys together for a road trip..

"Star Wars"

An enjoyable little film.  Not much can be said about it other then good characters, well done special effects for the time it was original made, and a fine tribute to the action serials of the 1930's.
I think I've seen that. All I can remember is that I thought it could REALLY use an update on the special effects, really bring it into the 90's.

Dude, it came out in the 90's.

Breaking Bad.

Awesome on so many levels but Badger and Skinny Pete discussing Star Trek was hilarious. [mostly Pete's reactions]

As much as I'm enjoying it I know there's a finite amount of episodes left and once it's done there will be a void. I kind of want to savour it as much as possible.

Tread lightly.

That moment when Walt goes full Heisenberg. :)

You're gonna laugh but I have to ask you about this..

The Nerdist have started a Talking Bad series, They Had Vince Gilligan on the first ep. He was trying to answer fans questions without revealing too much, It was good fun, I'll probably keep watching it.

Looks like they also had him on thier podcast but I haven't checked that out yet.

If it was done right. Whether it could get ratings in the current splintered tv landscape is another matter. (Does Nielsen even factor in online viewing?) The conditions that allowed TNG to thrive no longer exist.

Maybe a miniseries, or a series of direct to video movies? The studio may be leery of ever having a Trek show on the air at the same time a feature film is in theaters again.
I think Dorn's "Captain Worf" idea as a miniseries would be cool. And if it worked like BSG's miniseries did, then take it to series. But you're also right in that the casual viewer might be confused by having a series taking place in a different timeline than the movies coming out at the same time.

Yes, I know that Superman Returns came out while Smallville was on the air. I still think people might have been confused.

A show where Worf is captain of a Starfleet vessel would have to remain cannon to the new films anyway - He wasn't a captain at the point where Romulus comploded and Spock and Nero were sucked back one hundred and whatever years.

Star Trek [2009] has roots in the Prime timeline - it's just one long-ass time travel episode that hasn't yet been resolved.

It's kinda funny you mention WORF and confusion in the same breath when he himself was in movies and a tv show [DS9] AT THE SAME TIME ;) - and in different time periods to boot - see First Contact.

and yeah, the whole STV and STVI coming out during TNG. If an audience can handle that I'm sure things will be fine.

Maybe a mini-series to clear up how he could be in so many places at the same time? ;)

So I got a Surface Pro a few weeks ago. It runs Windows 8 Pro. The metro stuff actually works well with a touch interface but its still a wierd fusion on metro and desktop.

The 8.1 enhancements look interesting and it should be out before the end of August.

I will say one thing for Windows 8 - it is fucking fast.

Clearly they will want something out in 2016 - the 50th Anniversary of the franchise.

We're had two films in the JJ-Verse, may as well round it off into a trilogy and then do something fresh. [He's still producing iirc]

Would people actually watch a new Star Trek television series at this point or should it be put on the back burner for a while?

I second the recommendation for Red Dead Redemption. Fantastic game.
Thirded. I need to rebuy that thing.

You NEED to have not sold it in the first place. I still can't believe you did that.

There were some dlc packs that came out for free but the GOTY edition would appear to be the most convenient - apparently it comes with absolutely everything including pre-order bonuses [bonii?]

Just be sure to steer well clear of the Undead Nightmare DLC campaign early on as it contains serious spoilers.

Over half way through 2013, and I've been reflecting on my game purchases this year.

I've only bought three games this year, Bioshock Infinite, State of Decay, and The Last of Us. And they have all been absolutely great purchases, and I feel like these three titles could carry me through the remainder of the year, especially with eventual DLC on the way for all three of them. I have beaten all three, but I've really wanted to go back and replay each of them, BSI and TLoU on harder difficulties, but just haven't had the time.

State of Decay has had two major title updates since I last played it, both of which seem to have fixed a whole mess of issues the game had back when I played it. I'm really looking forward to downloading those and enjoying a cleaner smoother play through. There is also suppose to be a "sandbox" DLC coming out for it sometime in the nearish future, I'm interested to see what all that entails. It is already a sandbox game, so how do you make it more sandboxy?

I am, however, considering shelling out for a few titles I've wanted to play for a while now.

Red Dead Redemption

Farcry 3

Borderlands 2

Batman: Arkam Asylum

Deus Ex: Human Revolution

Heavy Rain

Dishonored

Metal Gear Solid HD Collection - I've still never played Snake Eater! What?!

But I still have several games on my back log I need to play through:

God of War Trilogy - Made it close to the end of GoW 2, haven't proceeded because I began it on PS2, and now have to restart on PS3 since I don't have the PS2 version any longer.

L.A. Noir - Haven't started

Resistance 1 & 2 - Made it very close to the end of the first one, PS3 broke, backed up all my saves and sent it in to get fixed, all my saves restored fine except for Resistance, so I have to start over.

Fallout: New Vegas DLC packs - I've got them all, but have only beaten the first one.

Skyrim - Really got into it for a while, loved it. I was right at the end of the main storyline with over forty hours of play time and my game save got corrupted. Was over a year ago, restarted recently, but it is kind of hard to get back into without thinking of how cool my other character was and how much time I already invested in the game. I feel like I am spending hours doing stuff I already did before.

Uncharted: Drake's Fortune - Started playing it a couple of weeks ago. Only a few hours in, should probably finish it. I just realized recently that I've owned a PS3 for two years and The Last of Us is the very first game I've beaten on it.

Some of those games were a lot of fun, some were quite dull.

Gotta recommend Red Dead Redemption - it was a blast and I still go back to it from time to time. It's a fairly serious game but the multiplayer can be hilarious.

The visuals are a little dated but the controls are decent, the acting is great and the atmosphere is spot-on.

I hope there's an RDR2 in the pipeline over at rockstar.

Farcry 3 and Deus Exn were good in places but both disappointed me - and this is from someone who liked Deus Ex 2!

I don't think I'll ever finish Heavy Rain.

LA Noir was boring - i'd expected it to be open like GTA but it isn't. The atmosphere is good but I lost interest after a handful of missions.

just grabbed Halo: Spartan Assualt. Haven't played much but it looks to be a good bit of fun.

Played through all of Aliens: Colonial Marines on the weekend - co-op mode with a friend. the game is fucking terrible.

I wanted to like the game but the story contradicts the films and doesn't even bother to do a decent job of ret-conning the storyline. overall the writing was very sloppy and it hardly even bothers being a story worth telling.

The issues during development of the game are well documented, and it's obvious while playing. there's no polish, it's all just slapped together.

Had a bit of a tinker during the weekend with my Surface Pro tablet. Installed Rage and had a bit of a play - it ALMOST runs smoothly at 1080p - just a slight bit of screen tearing but otherwise I think it runs better than on my desktop PC - the texture loading was definitely better - I almost never noticed texture pop-in, which I see fairly often on PC. - oh and this was running on an external USB hard drive too, So I was pretty impressed with that.

I also installed Portal 2 [mainly for the level editor] and that seems to run nice and smooth. I did have a few level ideas but I've started over from scratch now. Anyone here got any maps they've made to share?

Also been playing a bit of Shadowrun returns. I can lay in bed and play it just using a stylus which is cool. It's a bit slow at the start but i've been enjoying it.

Added to my list of potential band names in case I ever start a band.

oh, you do that too?

Haven't been playing much, Haven't had much free time this week. My copy of the last of us has been collecting dust - might fire it up later.

Invested in a surface Pro tablet. Reading up on [PC] games that it will run and rifling through my collection. haven't actually installed any yet though..

I didn't really get the tablet for games but I'm curious to see how things run - it's more powerful than my Desktop computer.

There are a few titles out soon that I'm interested in - GTA5 [looks massive], Diablo 3 [for 360 - Never played it], Wolfenstein: The new order..

I guess I should probably get stuck into my pile of shame before then. My tomb raider is still half raided, I don't think Ill ever finish MW3, and the last of us of course.

xhonzi - did you end up making the move? Curious on your thoughts - if you did in fact start using it..

Haven't played a lot with 8 [still happy with 7] but I'm getting pretty tempted to pick up a Surface Pro [Microsoft Tablet]. they run windows 8 Pro. I guess I could use 3rd party stuff to tweak it more to my liking..

Might have to wait for the prices to drop a bit, though.
