I can't help but snicker when people say that humanity is "killing the planet". You know what it takes to kill a planet? Asteroids. The size of Texas. If we piled every nuclear, biological, and otherwise unsavory weapon into one spot and set off the biggest fireworks display in the past 65 million years, I guarantee you that, 100 million years later, intelligent life would still be alive and kickin'. Would they be human? Probably not. But the point is that this planet is a tough old bird, and it's nothing short of arrogant to think we could take her down for the count. And that's not even taking religious beliefs into account.

Why is the GOUT not anamorphic?
Time
generalfrevious said:

If the GOUT was anamorphic, then it would sell out overnight; but the caveat for Lucasfilm is that if the OOT sold like hotcakes, then the "official" vesrion of the saga would suffer and go against their plans to eradicate the OOT from the collective consciousness of the general public. It is their gaol that 50 years from now, no one will remember the OOT and everyone will unconditionally accept the SE and PT.

Oh, please. I can understand the goal of the purists, but this is nothing short of delusional. The SE has all the fancy newfangled CGI that kids love, nowadays. They'd sell no matter what the OOT looked like. Let's face it, most people don't give a damn who shot first. To the vast majority of buyers, it's the same movie. And really it is, whether we want to believe it or not. A few bells and whistles does not a new machine make. The purists' share of the market is almost negligible. There is no conspiracy to make people forget the original movies. That's ridiculous. If it was, they wouldn't ADVERTISE THE CHANGES when it hit theaters in '97.

Companies have been known to put out garbage DVDs, but I just found the fact that they didn't trim 12.5% off the top and bottom of the picture an act of unusual laziness, and wondered if they've even acknowledged questions about this.

Oliver Stone's "W" with Josh Brolin playing George W. Bush
Time
I honestly cannot stand Michael Moore. The man is... indescribable (of course, by "indescribable" I mean "a lying, leftist, fatass of a douchebag"). On the other hand, JFK is one of my favorite movies of all time. Of course, that deals with stuff that happened almost 25 years before I was born. This will hit a little too close to home for me to get any entertainment value out of it.

By the way, how much fabrication was there in JFK's plot? And was RFK (the movie) a sequel?

New 'The Clone Wars' movie trailer
Time
I like how you're judging the entire plot of the movie on one comment made in the trailer. That is an incredibly stupid thing to do. You ever think that the Republic might have something to gain by helping the Hutts? You know, something that might not be in the 2-minutes worth of disjointed scenes we have available? I don't need the Force to sense predetermined bias in your thought patterns.

Is a "seamless branching" DVD of all the versions of a SW film possible?
Time
I was thinking about this recently, and was wondering if it was possible to fit all the different versions of a SW film onto one DL disc with negligible quality loss. I was thinking of:

A New Hope
Version I: Original Edition (1977) [No subtitle, original stereo audio]
Version II: Original Edition (1981) ["Episode IV", audio changes from mono mix]
Version III: Special Edition (1997) [missing shots from LD]
Version IV: Special Edition (2004)
Version V: Special Edition (2004) with deleted/alternate scenes from Behind the Magic

The Empire Strikes Back
Version I: Original Edition (1980)
Version II: Special Edition (1997) [missing shots from LD]
Version III: Special Edition (2004)

Return of the Jedi
Version I: Original Edition (1983)
Version II: Special Edition (1997) [missing shots from LD]
Version III: Special Edition (2004)

The Phantom Menace
Version I: Theatrical Version [missing shots from Japanese LD rip]
Version II: DVD Version
Version III: DVD Version with deleted/alternate scenes

Attack of the Clones*
Version I: DVD Version
Version II: DVD Version with deleted/alternate scenes [including Droid Ship sequence]

Revenge of the Sith**
Version I: DVD Version
Version II: DVD Version with deleted/alternate scenes

*The theatrical and IMAX versions of AotC do not have a readily available source.
**The difference between the DVD and theatrical versions of RotS is so minimal it isn't worth including.

Possible? Not? If it is, how does a fan-editor pull off seamless branching in the first place?

Now this just serves to confuse me even more.

Are you saying if Lucasfilm doesn't release the OOT, eventually those fans holding out for the OOT will start buying ancillary products instead?

Why would that be the case?

Well, if you're a Star Wars fan, the same old thing will get... well, old, eventually. Don't you ever get curious about, say, what's happening to Luke in the EU once every couple years, or how cool that model X-Wing would look hanging from your ceiling? Would you give all that up permanently because of your idealistic crusade?

Wow. The polarization between the reaction here and the TFN boards is striking. Over there, they're saying their hope in the series is renewed and this will be better than the PT. Here, everyone says it's despicable and will be the worst thing since Plan 9. Does one group have unrealistic expectations and predetermined bias, or does the other simply have pitifully low standards and rabid fanboyism? Only time will tell, I suppose. Until then, I'm looking forward to it.

Fighting Wars and traversing Trek... *SPOILERS*
Time
Actually, I'm doing this because it requires a minimal amount of thought, as opposed to, say, editing all the deleted scenes back into the SW movies. It sounds easy, and it WAS easy, until I got to the subtitles. Damn Lucasfilm to the deepest bowels of entertainment Hell for not making the alien subtitles hard encoded! Doing it with DVDPro is incredibly tedious, because I need to actually produce the DVD files before I can even see if my times are off!

Okay, rant over. Actually, I don't feel the need to be a millionaire. All I want is a nice, quiet desk job with middle- to upper-middle-class pay, a wife, children if she wants them (and ONLY if she wants them, as I'm not too keen on the idea), and a widescreen TV with no frickin' overscan.

Fighting Wars and traversing Trek... *SPOILERS*
Time
Since this topic is only half about Star Wars, I figured it would fit in best in the Off Topic forum. As some of you who have read in the Star Trek '09 movie thread may know, I am currently in the process of watching every episode of all the Star Trek series in preparation for the new Trek movie coming out next year, which may (or may not) be a complete reboot of the franchise. A similar, but not quite as drastic, marker in the history of the SW EU is upon us, as well. Del Rey's contract with Lucasbooks will run out at the end of the year, and until Lucasbooks either renews the contract or finds a new publisher, there will be no more SW novels planned after the end of '08. As such, while I continue my journey through the wholly alien universe of Trek (I had never seen a complete episode before I started), I will be reading through all the adult-level EU novels in rough chronological order. To match my lack of Trek knowledge, I have never read a SW novel cover to cover. It'll be an interesting journey.

As far as a progress report goes, I have successfully completed Season 1 of the original Star Trek (along with a few Season 2 and animated episodes that happen to fall in between the S1 episodes chronologically). I must say, I find it incredibly entertaining. The effects are outdated and some of the science is absolutely laughable (Kirk's transporter mishap splits his personality, but transports two complete bodies?), but I have become attached to the characters (particularly Spock and McCoy, whose banter reminds me of C-3PO and R2-D2).

It was a rough start though. The first thing I watched was a B&W/Color spliced version of The Cage, which was relatively unimpressive (except for Vina as an Orion animal woman *purrs*). The next episode, an animated adventure called The Magicks of Megas-Tu, almost made me stop watching entirely. I found their portrayal of Satan as such a benevolent character highly offensive, but luckily, I decided to give it another chance. Glad to see them avoid religion for the most part, it was only uphill from their.

I've only recently decided to start the SW books, and I'm an incredibly slow reader, so I'm still going through Darth Bane: Path of Destruction. I'll reserve judgment until I finish the book.

The real pain as far as "chronological order" goes is trying to place the "Tales" series of books from the 90s. I'll need to consult a timeline when I get closer to ANH's vicinity, but that's a long way in the future. As for books that will come out later this year, I read at such a slow pace that, by the time I read the 20 books before "Order 66", it will already be out.
