Robert Harris Godfather Restoration WHY cannot lucas restore the oot ?

No greater sin could have been commited by this so called and self named film preservationist than to actually physically cut up the camera negative.

Which he did not do. The original negative was in tatters by '93. Even if he had cut it up, he couldn't have done more damage than was already done.

Quite frankly, your spiteful attitude towards Lucas is growing tiresome. I've seen several posts by you calling him insane and saying he belongs in a straightjacket and all sorts of other ridiculous things. And over what? Some movies. Cultural icons or not, that what they are: just movies. To harbor so much ill will towards someone over a few items of entertainment isn't just irrational, it's downright disturbing.

To summarize: "We live in a real world. Come back to it."

I wonder what Harris thinks about Lucas destruction of the o-neg to create the special edition of star wars, would be interesting to know.

Lucas didn't destroy the negatives. Time had done the job for him when the SEs came around (apparently the storage sucked). They had to use other prints to put the SEs together.

Now all he needs to do is invent a way to do V.O. using computers, then he can cut human beings out of the process completely. Synthetic voice stuff has actually gone a long way since those monotone Stephen Hawking things, its probably not long off if someone invested a few million dollars of research into it. And you could program the inflection to whatever you wanted since it wouldn't be translating live, it would be just like animating images--crap, no one tell Lucas, he'll actually start to do it. Haven't you seen him directing? His rare conversations with actors are obvious and simplistic observations about motivation, only explained with horrendous and stuttered communication, or else acting out how to say the line for the actor. So this has basically been his goal all along.

Say what you will, but I'd pay to see any movie made like that, Star Wars or not.

An interview with Spielberg and Lucas, from a few weeks ago.

I actually agree with Lucas on this one. There's a strong supernatural vibe throughout all the Indy films. Even though the displays of the supernatural are not many, the belief in them and the quest for the power granted by these objects are omnipresent in the villain's motives. I get what he saying: these are supernatural mysteries (well, actually "quests" or something would be more appropriate) in the garb of action-adventure movies. The same way the Matrix films are philosophy discourses in the garb of technopunk action films.

Info Wanted: Prequels Original Version?
Time
I was just about to post the link to that site. Basically, in Episode I, we got a longer podrace sequence (subsequently losing a shot of Watto that is still available in the deleted scenes), an extra eye-candy scene on Coruscant (subsequently losing a shot of Palpatine's apartment building which is NOT available on the DVD at all), and some background extras replaced with more exotic looking female Twi'leks (I'm Johnboy, and I approve this edit).

In Episode II, a few background speeders were removed from the chase sequence (I guess so we wouldn't forget to focus on the characters; you know, because the audience is essentially a dumb animal with the attention span of... hey, I found a nickel!) and Anakin's breakdown in the garage is extended (MORE HAYDEN! YAY!).

In Episode III, one of the wipes is changed to a normal cut and... that's it. No, I'm serious, that's all they changed. Why they even bothered is beyond me.

Crystall Skull has GL's fingerprints all over it

He is more a sympathetic character in the books.

You really think so? I thought the Gollum of the book was just the typical cowardly villain with a dash of pathos. The movie Gollum damn near made me cry (although that may have been Serkis' absolutely stunning performance).

As for trying to outdo GL, exactly how were you expecting them to depict the Pelennor Field without CGI, again?

Not really a fair question, since I absolutely loathe Temple of Doom for reasons other than visual effects. But the special effects in that film certainly aren't anything to gawk at. The raft looks incredibly fake as it stays perfectly upright during the fall, the mine cart jump looks terrible, and Mola Ram's fall, while spectacular for its time, does look rather dated. I find the heart-rip to be the best effect in the film, and that's closer to makeup and props than SFX.

But I wasn't so much debating the visual quality of CGI as I was the assumption that it's easy. It most certainly is not.

What happened to the painstaking care that used to look at each shot and scene for excellent visual details? I preferred it when people did real work to make sure that a particular image was as good as it could be. Though, I suppose that Guillermo Del Toro does a fantastic job in his movies. I can't wait for Hellboy 2 and he gives me hope for a good translation of the Hobbit.

A lot of visual effects artists would find that offensive. Using computer-generated effects is incredibly painstaking, regardless of what the public at large may think.

Wookie Groomer's 1080p Star Wars Saga project (Released)
Time
They're not available anywhere right now. On a.b.sw, all they have is RotJ (not enough to warrant the cover charge). Wookie Groomer has what is easily the best set, better than any of the supposedly 1080p transfers currently available. That's why I was asking for a torrent of all six. It would be a gigantic load, but I would seed it for as long as I could (I'd still have upwards of 20GB left on my HD, and I doubt I'd need more than that).

Info Wanted: Lord Of The Rings - Deleted Scenes Or Footage - for my edit?

Cheers. That’s all I could find as well!

I remember, around the time the third film came out, reading that several Mt. Doom endings had been filmed, although I have no solid evidence to back up whether this actually happened. For one of the big things I’d love to change would be to have Gollum’s demise as it is in the book. I appreciate PJ wanting to make the ending a little more Hollywood cliff hanger-esque (quite literally), but I adore Tolkien’s ambiguous, even fatalistic, end.

If any extra footage does make the light of day then I’ll happily integrate it into the finished product but in the mean time I’ve made a start to the editing and am so far very happy with the progress.

There were several endings filmed. Some footage can be found on the EE DVD, but it's incomplete (bluescreen and such) with Jackson yapping over it. There were three endings:

1.) Matched the book. Cut because they figured audiences would find it more humorous than dramatic. As much as I hate to say it, I agree. It may work in print, but when acted out, it would definitely look like a Homer Simpson moment. "D'oh!"

2.) Frodo deliberately pushes an inattentive Gollum into the pit, either out of anger at Gollum's betrayal or in an attempt to destroy the Ring. Cut because it made Frodo look like a murderer. I agree once more. It would be totally out of character, especially since Frodo is supposed to be lucid again.

3.) The one we saw. Frodo's struggle isn't to push Gollum over, but simply to get the Ring back. This fit with the power the Ring is supposed to have when this close to Mount Doom, and avoids the suspiciously convenient deus ex machina of Gollum tripping into the pit. Probably the best way to go, but you could argue, of course.

EU books: Thats it..
Time
lordjedi said:

Yes and there are Star Wars fans who don't care how good or bad something is, they read it/watch it/listen to it/buy it. Most of those fans will probably never find their way here though. It could be absolute dreck like most of the EU (super weapon of the week anyone?) and they simply don't care. As long as it has their favorite characters, they keep on buying the books and reading them.

And why is that so bad? If they enjoy it, why not let them be?
