Filmmaker and New Yorker film critic Richard Brody's thoughts on the prequels.

after reading this in OP’s link, I stopped reading the article. Saying Empire was banally directed and that John Williams’ scores are bad basically gives you the prefect picture of the character writing this article in the first place, a moron with no idea about film making or music, who has absolutely no business being a critic of either.

I don’t necessarily agree with what he wrote, but IIRC what he was trying to say is that the original Star Wars was bold in its direction, while TESB and ROTJ were more traditional in their style. He didn’t say William’s scores are bad, but that they want to drag the viewer into the movie “by force”, to get them emotionally involved and close to the characters, something he doesn’t like. I think he means, for example, the way the score is used during the Death Star assault.

Is this person a close friend of yours? Is this person a Japanese citizen living abroad? I would advise a little caution, as even well-meaning questions can rub people the wrong way. I’ve had random co-workers and acquaintances who’ve never talked to me before ask me stuff since I’m the token white guy, and that stuff can get obnoxious after years and years (it was usually dependent on my mood). When living in America, my ex-wife would get a little upset when asked a question like that. I don’t speak for everybody, though.

We’ve never actually met each other, but I consider him like a friend (but not close, since he does live in Japan 😄 ). He’s a very active follower on my deviantart page, always one of the first to share his opinions on my works as well as other OT topics like videogames in general. I don’t think he’ll get it wrong, it’s just a question about SW after all, but I guess you never know, so I’ll be careful.

I would also not say “A Japanese” which, while possibly just an ESL thing, sounds kind of odd.

What should have I said instead?

How to tell if something is racist.

Do most average people of specific race in question find it offensive?

If yes, it is racist.

So, to answer this question, we only need to ask asian SW fans if they found the Neimoidians racist. It shouldn’t be too hard, I guess.

How many average Asians do you know? Enough to be statistically significant?

I’m just suggesting it could be done, and I’m actually curious to know what they think about it.
To answer your question, I know a Japanese. It may not be statistically significant, but I may try asking him his opinion on this subject.

Is this a meme? It was my first thought as soon as I saw Luke('s beard) in TFA 😄

That beard conveys wisdom; an infinite repository of knowledge it has.

Also it is a meme along with the “Why would Rey even train when she can defeat Kylo Ren already?” meme.

I honestly didn’t know it was a meme 😄
I was joking about the beard. Let’s say anyone can be described for one detail, I say Luke’s made up 99% of beard: Luke is Beard 😄

MalàStrana, I agree on most your points, but I think her taking Luke’s sword to fight Kylo could be a strong decision, since it implies she’s accepted her new destiny.

Hal 9000 said:

Yeah, and I am hoping Episode 8 delves into her inner conflicts and fears ala the ‘dark side cave.’

At this point, I wonder if Rey really needs to be trained by Luke, anyway 😄

[…] For the record, Anakin in TPM comes close to being a Mary Sue. I can think, though, of a scenes en route to and on Coruscant that depict him as out of his element and doubting himself. […]

Anakin shouldn’t have been able to take on a battle station all by himself, that’s for sure (especially since not even the mighty Ric Olie could :\ )

I disagree strongly with both of you, but I’m also sick of arguing my points, and furthermore I’ve wasted far too much of my life on this. Enjoy your opinions.

Don’t worry about it: we know your stance on this subject since you talked about it earlier, so don’t feel forced to stress it again.

The only way to accurately gauge Force Abilities now seeing as how Star Wars is so expansive is to put everything is under one umbrella. Meaning we should just assume Force Pushing is viable in the OT. Especially when Vader is able to hurl objects at Luke

But then, if Luke and Vader never pushed each other in both TESB and ROTJ when they had the chance, makes sense to think that they really couldn’t.

TV’s Frink said:

He does? When?

Yep, he does here when he pushes Rey.

At any rate, the easy answer is “because he’d be unstoppable and that wouldn’t make a very good movie.”

I agree, but generally in-universe explainations are also nice, so to keep things more (in-universe) realistic. Otherwise, it turns like in AOTC, where Dooku first tries to kill Obi-wan with a final blow (adding tension to the scene), and then, after defeating Anakin, he just changes his mind 😄

Honest question: why did Kylo have to fight Finn and Rey instead of knocking them out by pushing them with the Force, as he did earlier? He had plenty of room to focus on using the Force. IIRC, using the Force to push persons was first introduced with the PT, so comparisons with OT’s duels cannot be done.

(Spoilers)How could The Force Awakens have been more original?

What if Starkiller Base were instead just a planet hiding a (main?) FO military base? This is where the rest of the map is stored (and where Rey was taken), so Han and Finn get into the base to steal it, while the Resistence’s pilots lure the enemy away for as long as possible. No need for another Death Star anymore!
