Toshiro Mifune turned down Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Vader roles (<em>according to daughter, Mika Mifune</em>)
Time

I guess Lucas wrote Obi-wan especially for Mifune: Obi-wan is a Japanese-sounding name, after all.
So he turned down the offering because of the way samurai were depicted? That’s very interesting, especially coming from a leading actor in countless jedi jidaigeki movies.

Why did they use Arriflex cameras on Return of the Jedi rather than Panavision cameras?

Are you saying child actors are cheaper than adult actors? 😄

Peter Suschitzky’s cinematography in TESB is one tough act to follow.

Alan Hume actually walked out because he didn’t like how GL was treating Marquand. Alec Mills took over for the last month of production.

I’d genuinely like to know more about these.

WRONG MOS!

Right, it’s Mos Eisley space port, of course 😄

P.S.: btw, I forgot writing about my experience with “Greedo shot first”! As I said, I saw the 97SE first, but that scene was so fast and odd (and on a “pan and scan” VHS), that I didn’t figure it out what exactly had happened, except that Han somehow had killed the “alien” with his “gun”. So my father than told me this: that Han had shot the blaster under the table, its bolt had deflected onto the wall and finally against the “alien”, killing him 😄 So, completely misunderstanding that scene, it was still “Han shot first” to us 😄

Watching Star Wars As A One Year Old
Time

I think I saw the 97SE on VHS in 1997 or 1998, so probably I was either 3 or 4 years old, but I don’t remember very much about ANH.
Santa Claus Lucas talked about how he “improved” the movie with Vader’s figure standing in front of him;
I had trouble understanding the dialogues (especially when talking about politics);
I found the droids’ scenes on Tatooine boring, but I always let them play anyway;
I think I liked Mos Espa’s sequences because they were the first steps towards Luke’s new journey;
Luke’s training with his BLUE lightsaber, of course 😉
Chewie going nuts was always funny on the Death Star, and “Boring conversation anyway” always made me laugh 😄
I also think I liked the garbage masher’s scene, though I don’t specifically remember why. But I was scared that they could actually get smashed; I don’t remember feeling sorry for Obi-wan, though, probably because he “sounded” still alive 😄
I didn’t understand they had to destroy the Death Star on time, so I found the dogfights boring;
when the Death Star finally exploded, I think my father told me that it would show up again in ROTJ because it wasn’t COMPLETELY destroyed, starting a false myth 😄
Overall, I think I liked TESB and ROTJ more (Ewoks not included!), even though they were much more mature and “creepy” 😄

P.S.: when I saw TPM a few years later, I remember saying to myself that it was fine (except for the obvious retcons) and that it was more “modern” (not in a good way) compared to the OT because the film was faster paced than TESB 😄

THE WASHINGTON POST – George Lucas: To feel the true force of ‘Star Wars,’ he had to learn to let it go
Time

Lucas can make all the changes he wants, but should also give more respect to the originals, the ones which made Star Wars what is today. I’ll never understand why he can’t do like Scott and release both versions, is he THAT ashamed of his early works?
In any case, I understand his take on Han, but his “Greedo shot first”'s edit looks terrible and awkward, not the way to go.

Where/How will you see TFA?
Time

Probably on bootleg 😄, but consider it a preview: I’ll immediately buy its official blu-ray if I’ll find the movie objectively worth it, but I’m not throwing the little money I have at Disney just for the sake of it :\ These guys keep releasing movies like pizzas in a fast-food (actually, movie reels are jokingly called “pizzas” in my country 😄), and it shows it quality-wise. So I MUST “test” TFA’s quality before considering it worth my time and money, or s**t will just get “reels” :\

Return of the Jedi - Why so much hate? What do you guys think of it?
Time

I dislike Leia being Luke’s sister too as it feels as a forced retcon, but they had no choice but do something about it. Had Yoda just said “We need to find another one”, no problem, but he didn’t, so they HAD to explain who was the “other” he was talking about.
Anakin? Not sure it would’ve worked, as Yoda refers to him as an “agent of evil” in TESB, but with the right dialogues, they could’ve made it believable maybe (hell, they “kind of” explained why Ben lied, after all!)
If they didn’t have so many characters at that point, they could’ve introduced her in ROTJ as a new character working for the rebellion, so to make her take part to the DSII attack. I’m not sure it would’ve been better, but from a marketing standpoint, this could’ve also been the basis for new films or telefilms.

My problem with ROTJ is mainly with the character development, with only Luke and Vader actually concluding their story arc. Part of this is probably because there are too many characters. Imagine if we had:
-just Luke, Chewie and Lando saving Han, both making Luke’s plan more believable and Lando’s actions conclude his arc;
-Leia coordinate the final attack instead of Lando, putting her in charge and concluding her arc as general/queen;
-Han skillfully infiltrate Kashyyyk with Chewie and his people, instead of stepping on branches and triggering traps.
I wish we had more material to make an “ultimate edit”, but one can only dream :\

P.S.: I just realized the DSII’s explosion is a huge peace symbol (never thought peace could be achieved with war 😄)

Info Wanted: a Color Corrected 2004 SE Trilogy preservation?
Time

As I understand, compared to the 1997 SE, the 2004 SE has its own (screwed) color granding, which is exactly the official one found on the DVDs. So, as LexX wrote, the closest version with better grading is the 1997 SE (which is mostly based on the OT one).
Unfortunately, as far as I can tell, no one has ever tried (even thought 😄) applying that color grading to the 2004 SE. It’s not an easy task either, because the 2004 SE has different grading almost shot by shot. I guess a “quick-and-dirty” corrected 2004 SE could be achieved by using the 1997 SE (which is only available in SD or upscaled) and replacing+regrading only the “new” 2004 shots, but I’m not sure anybody would be interested in making such edit and supporting it (i.e.: focusing on preserving its download for years).

I don’t know if this: http://www.radiotimes.com/news/2015-11-17/its-taken-13-years-but-someone-has-finally-spotted-the-matrix-easter-egg-in-star-wars-attack-of-the-clones has been raised here before but I thought it was fun and plausible what with the first film stealing much of the expected applause from TPM. I didn’t see Comic Relief on the night (I don’t have broadcast television) but I caught the skit later. BB8 is shaping up to be a cultural icon like Fett and Maul.

I knew the actor who played Mouse was the death stick dealer, but never spotted her before!

Maybe the prequels are set in one of the early versions of the Matrix, and Anakin is one of Neo’s predecessors? 😛

Surely “A New Hope”'s SE featurette (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zB4woJeligY). I think I specifically saw that edit you posted in the fan documentary “Star Wars Begins” (http://fanedit.org/ifdb/component/content/article/85-fanedit-listings/documentary-review/416-star-wars-begins)
There probably are officially released sources, but I doubt they’re more than SD, unfortunately.

To me, yes, but mostly to avoid retconning Leia’s character. Instead, her becoming queen in ROTJ (as suggested by Kurtz) and proving worthy of the title protecting her people against the Empire, would’ve made for a better character development and a better end to her narrative arc.

I think the whole queen crap is ridiculous. It would make the rebellion stupid. They were fighting to get rid of dictatorship, not to go from empire to monarchy. And btw, “her people” were all blown up in ANH.

The way it is now makes for a far better character development. We first meet her as a spoiled royalty in ANH. By the time of ESB she seemed to have become respected by the rebels because of her skill rather than the fact that she was once a princess. In ESB she even hates it when Han calls her princess, which implicates she put that stuff behind her and that she is not proud of it. The old EU actually made the final transformation, i.e. into a politician in republic/democracy which is a direct opposite of her status at the beginning of ANH.

I think the Amidalas being monarchs doesn’t necessarily mean the people of Alderaan are/were under dictatorship: maybe it’s like a modern democratic monarchy like the UK (which is member of the EU, a democratic union of states kind of like the Republic), so there’s no contradiction here.
About the “her people” issue, I don’t think it was confirmed in the movies that there weren’t survivors, away from their home planet.
But in any case, my point is that to me Leia becoming a queen or leading the Rebellion would’ve fitted her character more, being Leia a princess taking more and more responsabilities in the war (stealing/keeping safe the plans, helping on Yavin IV, co-directing the battle of Hoth). I don’t think she was spoiled in ANH, quite the contrary. Very cold and young, sure, yet a loyal leader.

Derision, of course 😄 Maybe it was too sudden, too unexpected, with that two-steps igniting, I don’t know. I myself can’t understand why, but as soon as I saw it igniting, I found it hilarious and immediately started laughing, like when Finn suddenly appeared in the desert in the first teaser.

And only a couple of shots have been re-comped for the SE - most of the space battle you see on the BD is the original compositing.

I meant with matte-lines removed, but you're right.

And it looks 100% more real than any of the visual fx shown in the TFA trailers.

So true :D

And those composites you pointed out actually look really good for the time, especially the Tatooine ones. The hangar matte is admittedly not great but that's definitely the exception.

I thought they could've at least tried to avoid using blue-screen for the first skiff's shots (the ones green-shifted) and try something else, but if you say it looked ok, touchè :)

ROTJ [...] bad special effects

Really?

Really:

https://youtu.be/taRp0pSUx5w?t=29 (hard to see here because of the resolution, but both on the bluray and the GOUT the composite is clearly shifted to green: looks fake)

https://youtu.be/taRp0pSUx5w?t=35 (can't find it GOUT, but Chewbacca's fur bleeds green because of the bad composite: looks fake)

http://geekleagueofamerica.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/screenshot20110903at165.png (the blue-screen composite: looks fake)

And much of the original GOUT space battle. Just because they redid the composites better for the SE, doesn't mean they originally looked great. Compared to the earlier movies, they focused more on quantity than on quality. It doesn't necessarily look fake (especially because every image is "so dense"), but it's not up to the standards of the earlier movies.

 And also,

:D Are you sure using ROTJ is a good idea? It always comes with the worst examples in the OT (bad special effects, pointless battle scenes, "muppets", bad or cartoon-like acting, plot holes, ...)

But, in any case, he says "Hee Ya", not "Whooo"! Guess what: western reference, and he's considered just like Solo in the movies, so it still makes sense. Also he's just survived the most dangerous mission in the galaxy and does not even look goofy like Poe does (that muppet on the other hand... :D)
