Harmy's THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK Despecialized Edition HD - V2.0 - MKV & AVCHD (Released)
Time

While the changes are for the most part less drastic than for the other two movies, TESB has the changes that bother me the most of all of them. In case you care to know, I'll list them:

1)The music timing as the Millennium Falcon drifts away from the from the star destroyer. I always loved the music surge as soon as Chewie releases the landing claw. Changed for...no apparent reason?

2) As Darth Vader leaves cloud city, what used to be a terse, tensely uttered "Bring my shuttle" now becomes the most awkwardly long-winded and non-spoken-style English phrase, "Alert my star destroyer..."..UGH (also discussed earlier here  http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/Alert-my-Star-Destroyer-to-prepare-for-my-arrival-What-was-the-point/topic/10993/).

3)The whole shuttle sequence.... this interrupts the fast-paced, urgent timing of Luke's rescue with a REALLY slow, unnecessary show of military pageantry. Wouldn't Darth Vader, if he's in a hurry, not worry about making troops stand at attention as he does something as mundane as shuttling from a planet to his ship?

4) Probably the 2nd worse for me is the timing of getting Luke back into the Falcon - THere *used* to be a really rhythmically timed orchestra hit, then the door closes, then a little string and flute flourish, and cut away. Now there are CGI doors, lots of light, NO apparent regard to the music timing...it's less artful and more slapped-together feeling to me.

I've never heard anyone mention #1 or #4 beside myself - it might just be that I watched that movie a LOT as a 14 year-old with a new (Beta!) VCR in the house, or because I'm a musician, or because I'm an audio guy in general. But I find those changes pull me out of the movie so much that I can barely watch.

Digital Source for the '77 Stereo Mix
Time

Is there anyone who already has this who might be willing to updload this to 'spleeny-poo or even dropbox it my way?

The laserdisc Archive thingy is 60 gigs and I only want the one file... plus no one seems to be seeding it at the moment...

If no one is willing to do this, and it's allowed, I'll try to download the whooole dang thing and seed just the 77Digital as a standalone file if this would be useful to others?

Help: Looking for... a good transfer of the first issue Pan And Scan Laserdisc for Star Wars

Is the "better master" a big deal in a standard-def LD, and worth the mediocre analog audio? I'm not trying to sound cynical, I really want to know. If this is the LD to check out, I want to check it out!

And I'm assuming we're talking about a CAV disc, too, yeah? (Sorry if this has been asked to death).

Puggo Strikes Back! (Released)
Time

Hey y'all-
I took off for a couple days and found that

1) .zip files aren't allowed on MS (as one of our members suggested)

2) Luckily, several folks had already grabbed and reupped this PSB. Thank you!

RE: The sound: despite the  wah-wah/tremelo-ness of it, the whole of the soundtrack - especially the music!-is really rich-sounding and satisfying.  I'm really really enjoying the differences, large and small, in the overall mix.

The colors are really wonderful, too. This shot makes me all warm 'n fuzzy:

I'd leave it as is ("dual mono") as well.

As an additional bonus, the same track played through 2 speakers will be perceptually "louder" than just coming through one.

On the other hand, if you encode it as mono, the end user can choose to do something other than listen to just the center channel but also has the option of using just the center channel if they want.

Not helping,

Joel

Puggo GRANDE - 16mm restoration (Released)

That sounds like a miserable job, sync *and* phase drifting in and out...

Anyway, thanks for the tips, Puggo and all. I have found that most ADR is only "pretty good" in movies and tv, which makes the syncing even more difficult - decisions like "do I  match the mouth movements or do I match the original sound from the released film?" come up). We'll see how this goes.

edit: I was unable to get near this last weekend, it will be a couple weeks before I am back home to try again. Apologies to anyone who is actually following this. :)
