Hoooooraaaaaay!
Hoooooraaaaaay!
At one point I thought it was just a problem with my player, but I have not seen this kind of artifacts on any other LD's I own.
That's interesting - the artifacts look like RF interference. If you have any different cables (extra-shieled old-school high-end video cables?), I'd suggest trying those, but if you haven't had trouble with other LDs, that would seem like the trouble is with the disc itself.
Puggo Grande "feels" the most like "Original Star Wars" to me, despite its scratchy video and wow-y audio quality, it's definitely got the "heart" of Star Wars missing from the official releases after 97.
If you have any big stuff to fix that doesn't get cleaned up with automated processes, I'd be happy to take a crack at it with AE rotoscoping (I outlined some of this in the x9 thread, not realizing that you'd moved on from that already :) )
I *highly* recommend using After Effects instead of photoshop for this kind of work.
Basically, you'll save the step of exporting the frames, modifying, then reinserting them. Instead, you paint a "traveling matte" that you modify as needed, with the possibility that you don't have to draw a new one for every frame.
This is how old-school effects shots are modified (wire removal, etc) these days, and I did a little training for it at Technicolor about 8 years ago. I'm sort of handy at it, or could get back to proficiency very quickly.
If you would like to share the offending sections of footage with me, I'll get to work.
Is there any news re: the restored Mono mix mentioned here?
Will you be sharing this? I'd love a raw capture of the digital '77 mix.
I'm a little late to the party, but THANK YOU to Puggo for making this and to msycamore for the invitation.
Puggo Grande is just wonderful. The original wipes, the mono mix, the scratches, all of it makes for an viewing experience in which the focus is the content, not the quality of presentation. I enjoyed watching Star Wars more than I have in years watching this version.
Awesome!
And I know I'm not alone in anxiously awaiting Puggo Strikes Back.
It looks like I have re-started lurking at the right time, this is incredible news!
OK I've watched a few minutes of The MoveAlong Story of Star Wars and the intro is amazing! I had actually conceptualized the black text of the record crawling against the blue background, but you actually made it! Well done!
I have a few more ideas I'd like to examine in mine, but you've inspired me. THanks!
I'd be happy to share!
I've just done the raw capture and need to edit the two sides together. (they're like 1GB each at the moment)
It's not completely noiseless, as there are ticks and pops a bit, so I'd like to clean those up but I'd be happy to share the before and after.
I downloaded the MoveAlong Edition last night, will check it out later in the week.
I have an idea for my own video version, too.
3 years late to the party- I just did a ridiculous transfer of a Japanese vinyl copy of Story Of Star Wars on a decent turntable with an expensive cartridge, captured at 96Khz/24Bit. Was wondering what to do with video, but then randomly came across this thread.
I'm glad this exists, now off to find it somewhere.
Ah - I was "downloading" a newsgroup reader. Apparently that is not what I needed to get binaries from newsgroups.
I am definitely asking for links. :)
Hi - Not sure what you're asking me, but I'm having trouble just not knowing anything about newsgroups, etc. Is that what you mean by "other site?"
And re: "Certainly not".. I somehow missed that you weren't doing the vinyl transfers yourself. Vacuum cleaning machines (A la Keith Monks, VPI, and Nitty Gritty) are the gold standard for getting a clean record to begin with.
ABC, another question:
How do you add an LP "layer" to another track and completely avoid phasing errors?
Would someone be so kind as to share SW and ESB with me on Rapidshare?
Hi all!
I am in the middle of getting a newsgroup downloader so I can check these recordings out. I am an audiophile and LP lover so I'm very curious to hear what's going.
On the capture side, my own experience with the Goldring 1042 cartridge is mixed at best. My friend with a Linn Lp12 had one and I didn't like it at all. However, I have heard other needle-drops on the internet with it and it sounded great.
So i'm going in with a little bias... :)
I would love to make audiophile captures of these, but my own experience in trying to locate well-pressed LPs has been frustrating. I DO have a good "Star Wars", but both of my Empires are off-center so the pitch wavers quite a bit.
ABC, do you vacuum-clean your records?
Downloading,
-Joel
That's great news. :)
How does one sign up for a copy? Forgive me if this has been asked... I'll go read the other 7 pages, but just in case...
I'd love one, too!
Thanks,
-Joel
