STAR WARS: EP IV 2004 REVISITED ADYWAN *1080p HD VERSION NOW IN PRODUCTION
Time

Firmware upgrades are more likely the answer. Verbatim may work better for some but no all of us have the same drives...so it won't be the same for everyone. I've burned 2 AVCHD discs on Sony Dual-Layered discs and had NO problem burning or playing.

I actually have some Taiyo Yuden discs and those are for my special videos.....like Adywan's stuff.

Anyways.....not everyone's experiences will be the same.

Pioneer DVL-90 (Made In Japan) Laserdisc/DVD Player Settings

Okay, here is the deal...the VCR doesn't have the Red, Blue, Green component in.

My Pioneer doesn't have the Red, Blue, Green component out.

It has the yellow, red, white plugs out and the VCR has the matching in's for these.

What is the difference between these two? Which is better? I'm guessing S-Video is a toss up between the two.

I'm SO confused.................................lmao!!!!

Thanks Moth3r for your response.

Is there anyone here who owns these components that can shed some light on the technical aspects of each machine to know whether it's worth trying or not?

The DVD recorder is a Panasonic DMR CA18 DVD Recorder. The S-VHS is a Panasonic AG1980P Desktop Editor.

Here is what I found for info:

Panasonic AG1980 S-VHS Desktop Editor -

FEATURES:

 • Still the only VCR in it's class to provide near frame accurate editing. When used with edit controllers from Videonics, FAST and FutureVideo, the AG-1980 achieves an accuracy of +-2 frames And, the 5-pin edit terminal on the rear panel makes it very easy to set up an editing system.
 • Performs all assemble and video insert edits as well audio video dubbing. Also has independent linear audio input and output for more flexible audio dubbing.
 • Hi-Fi stereo audio with a frequency reponse of 20Hz to 20kHz and a dynamic range of 90dB. It also has Hi-Fi recording level control, headphone monitor terminal with volume control and a mic input terminal.
 • Advanced dual-loading mechanism features a quick reponse time, requiring only 0.5 seconds for a picture to appear from Stop mode and 1.9 seconds from FF/REW.
 • Digital Processing:
 • Digital Comb Filter using advanced 3-dimensional system provides complete Y/C (luminace/ chrominace) separation. This practically eliminates color and luminance blurring.
 • Field coefficient Digital Noise Reduction (DNR) circutitry processes the Y and C signal separately, thereby boosting the signal-to-ratio and reducing noise during playback.
 • Built-in-full field TBC (Time Base Corrector) eliminates even the smallest of jitter, skew, head impact error and color bluring.
 • Ivaluable for editing, the TBC helps maintain high picture quality even through the third-generation.
 • Besides digital circurity, the AG 1980 has laminated video heads.
 • Clearly superior to conventional ferrite heads they provide more vibrant color reproduction and a higher S/N ratio.
 • Made In JAPAN.

 • Connector Type 1.0 x Headphones ( 4 pin mini-DIN ) - Rear , 1.0 x RF input ( RCA phono x 3 ) - Rear , 2.0 x S-Video output ( F connector ) - Rear , 1.0 x Composite video/audio input ( BNC ) - Rear , 1.0 x Composite video output ( Mini-phone stereo 3.5 mm ) - Front , 1.0 x Composite video/audio input ( 4 pin mini-DIN ) - Rear , 1.0 x Composite video input ( BNC ) - Front , 1.0 x S-Video input ( 4 pin mini-DIN ) - Rear , 1.0 x RF output ( F connector ) - Rear , 1.0 x S-Video input ( RCA phono x 3 ) - Front , 1.0 x Microphone ( RCA phono x 3 ) - Front , 1.0 x Composite video/audio output ( Mini-phone stereo 3.5 mm ) - Rear

The fact is that in 2006, in a world where we now had high-definition video discs (hddvd and blu-ray), George Lucas literally gave us 1993 quality transfers of the star wars trilogy and acted like he was doing us a favor.

A favor, it was not. An outright slap in the face for fans of what started it all, it was. On this, most all of us agree.

Pioneer DVL-90 (Made In Japan) Laserdisc/DVD Player Settings
Time

Hey all,

I have the Pioneer DVL-90 Laserdisc machine, made in Japan. It's got a lot of nice features to make use of.

Does anyone here own one and if so, what kind of settings might you suggest I use on it when playing LD's for the best playback.

I use the Cinema 2 option with no V-DNR and seem to get a pretty nice picture. I am planning on keeping these settings when transferring some LD's for archival purposes.

My other question is, are there any upgrades that can be made to this player to enhance it's playback capabilities?

Thanks much,

Shawn

This is the capture card I have. Very cheap, but old hat now (surprised it's still available - I've had mine about 6 years!)

If you're looking for a new card, I'd suggest something that uses the Philips Saa7163 or Saa7164 chipset, or the ATi Theatre 550 or 650 (the latter may not work with VirtualDub, though). These chips include 3D comb filters to get better quality from composite sources - but because of the way some LD players process the signal this may not be a benefit.

It says this doesn't process any sound. How do you yourself process the audio to add when you're ready?

Thanks

What was done for the 1995 THX mastering?
Time

Mielr said:

The "Faces" LDs and VHS tapes from 1995 are from the same master as the Definitive Collection LD set from '93, and the same master (except for the original scroll on SW) was used for the '06 GOUT DVDs.

(The '93 VHS set in the Hologram box were sourced from a previous master - different soundtrack, too).

Aside from new telecine transfers, they used a 'dirt concealment' technique on the Faces/DC releases, which actually caused some unfortunate smearing and artifacts.

Anyone have a few shots of the 1993 Hologram set? I'd like to know what I'm looking for and I don't think I've seen it.

Thanks kindly,

Shawn

If you want lossless, you should consider a video capture/TV card for your PC. A cheap one would be adequate for your needs.

Okay, for a lossless A/V Laserdisc capture, which kind of capture card should I be on the look out for?

I looked at these.....

Hauppauge HD-PVR Model 1212 HD Capture
Sony Handycam CCD Camcorder w/ Plextor USB Video Capture Device
They are both on eBay.

I only have a PCI slot available, NO PCI-Express. I also want to make sure there won't be any sync issues with A/V. Probably a card that works with VirtualDub would be a good idea but I'm not sure.

At this point, a price range could be up the $400.00USD mark for suggestions.

Thanks in advance..........

Is it possible to put AVCHD disc's onto a dvd recorder's HDD ?
Time

IF you had an external HD connected to a Blu-ray player you could. IF you had a Blu-ray player that was Wi-Fi capable you could network it to your PC and stream them from there.

These are the only two ways I know aside from burning the discs and watching it in a Blu-ray machine. One can create the AVCHD file structure with tsMuxeR then burn to disc with imgburn UDF 2.50.

If it's already in the AVCHD structure then you only need imgburn & UDF 2.50 to finish it off.

Nero will do it, here is an easy tutorial to follow. It worked wonders for me.

Remember, google is your friend. :)

Moth3r,

Thank you very much for your response. It is appreciated.

Ya know, this all started because I was watching my 1997 Star Wars Trilogy SE 5 Star Edition DVD's (yes, I actually have a set) and I thought wow, these could look better than they do and I have the basic materials to do it but how.

Regarding video capture cards....I realize there is probably personal preference involved....what should I consider within a reasonable budget?

STAR WARS: EP V "REVISITED EDITION"ADYWAN - 12GB 1080p MP4 VERSION AVAILABLE NOW
Time

Since I've been dormant here for so long I've missed many a surprise here.

Ady,

I have to say that just by watching the trailer, I can't imagine the end product until I get to see it "with my own eyes" (pun intended, of course).

The only issue I as a newb could see in the trailer was that it might be nice to get a better coloring/shading on the Falcon on the Bespin Landing pad when they enter the city with Lando. It looks a bit out of focus and no where near as clear as it does while it's taking off in a hurry.

As for the color-correction....it looked awesome to my eyes. I certainly wish I could have gotten a hold of your color-corrected Episode IV....I bet it stands the test of all the compliments it's received.

I will be paying closer attention to this release.

Thanks for ALL that you do.

A query about straight LD rips for DVD back up....I AM a newb at this.
Time

Hey all,

While trying to wade through endless discussions about video/audio editing here I was not able to find something strictly relating to creating straight quality back-up DVD's from Laserdisc.

It is obvious that the forum has some very accomplished video editors so I'd like to learn what I might expect to accomplish with the equipment I have. My budget isn't huge but, if needed, I would be capable of light additions to what I have to get better transfers.

So, with that said, this is the hardware I have on hand to utilize.....

1. Pioneer DVL-90 (Made In Japan) Laserdisc/DVD Player

2. Panasonic DMR CA18 DVD Recorder

3. Sony STR DG510 AV Receiver

...and if needed.....

4. Panasonic AG-1980 SVHS Desktop Editor Pro-Line Machine w/ TBC (In case my un-opened 1997 Silver SE VHS Box Set needed to be utilized)

I would prefer to end up with back-ups that need Dual Layer DVD's to make the most out of audio/video options for quality.

Questions I'd like to find straight & simple layman answers to are.....

1. What is the best way to hook these up to maintain audio/video quality?

2. Should I consider a separate TBC of some kind to go between the LD and it's next connection?

3. Should I consider a different DVD Recorder if I want a "lossless" audio/video quality?

4. Concerning software for the DVD authoring/editing process, what should I consider using to connect the actual video portions while editing out the side-flips and such?

5. Lastly, are there those here with open slots in their schedules with no projects in line that might consider offering their assistance to do these for me if I cannot afford any possible higher end equipment to complete such a project?

(Of course, if someone did offer an assist they would obviously be entitled to copies of their work for future use in edits and such. I would also supply the media for burning & postage paid both ways....in addition to my life long gratitude for such assistance.)

At this point, what I would like to transfer is....

Star Wars 1997 SE Trilogy: Japan Silver Box Source (I also have the repackaged 2000 set, Japan Source and the U.S. Black Box SE)

Star Wars 1999 Phantom Menace: Japan LD

Star Wars 1995 Faces Trilogy: U.S. Source

I have other Laserdiscs that I'd like to see get a transfer for home use but these would probably be the ones I'd like to start with.

My sincerest apologies now if I missed a thread dedicated to this and my gratitude to those who feel compelled to actually read this and respond.

:)

Shawn

THE STAR WARS SAGA - 1080P AVCHD DVD-9 for PS3 & Blu-Ray players - Episodes 1, 4 & 5 available now

Adywan,

I've been a fan of your work. Your stuff has a natural flow to it that others seem to miss.

What I'm tired of (NOT your fault)....is people putting this stuff up elsewhere with titles that make them hard to distinguish from others.

I'm getting ready to watch the ESB Color Corrected edition you've done. I will drop a note here about it when I'm done.

If I only had a blu-ray burner for the 14GB ones.....now THOSE would be awesome to see. (If anyone has extra BD discs of the ones available I'd be happy to hear from you....drop me a pm.)

Thanks for all that you do Adywan.

Alien 3 Extended Edition (Released)

I would be interested as well. I think this movie was very under-rated here in the U.S.. Mr. Fincher certainly didn't get a fair shake. I'd love to see each Director do a full blown edit of their respective movie as an addition to the Quadrilogy set for the fans. These are historical moments in a historical franchise that deserve to be preserved properly for all to enjoy.

Regarding the above trailer....I watched it and there is no EEV crash scene in it....maybe you have the wrong trailer linked.

I think he was refering to the Alternate Clemens segment at the beginning. That shot wasn't featured in any cut of the film, not even the workprint.

It was intended at one stage that Clemens walks along and witnesses the EEV crash and the opening scene in the trailer is a shot of the original sequence.

Okay, that clarifies things a bit then, thanks.

The opening segment of the "assembly print" seems to have that shot (Quadrilogy Set)...unless they are different for some reason that I hadn't noticed. I am so far from being technically minded about movie editing....but it did look the same.

What I do need though, Is a decent copy of this trailer

Alien 3 Trailer #2

http://www.movieweb.com/video/VIe85ifeaWPqhg

It contains the EEV crash scene, I don't believe is in any cut of the film not even the workprint. But it is in the trailer. Is the trailer on any of the Quadrilogy discs, I didn't see it, but maybe I missed it.

Hey all,

It's been a LONG while since I've posted here. Glad to see I am still a member.

As I've been watching some of my favorite flicks again, Alien 3 Assembly Cut was always on my list of cool. It unfortunately sacrificed the VERY cool ending of the theatrical release (which still sucks greatly) but I understood the need for the "sacrificial-like" pose Ripley takes in the shape of a cross as she plummets to her demise....sort of keeps the "spiritual" message in the movie intact.

Regarding the above trailer....I watched it and there is no EEV crash scene in it....maybe you have the wrong trailer linked.

Anyways, I am excited to see that people are doing these types of releases although the magnitude of them for any said movie gives me an innate headache...which one to watch first, etc. I've never seen the "actual" Workprint in it's entirety...as much as I'd like to, I can't seem to find it available on the net.

I would LOVE to see a more complete version that could incorporate as much footage as possible without losing any of the feel that Fincher set out for when he brought his ideas to the table.

Hope everyone has a great day!!!!

Cheers!!!!!

I would like to complete the set if it is possible but I haven't been able to find a place to start looking. eBay comes up a negative whilst doing a search, guess I will google until a definitive answer comes along.....
