A query about straight LD rips for DVD back up....I AM a newb at this.
Time

I have noticed this just from watching the movies with this machine....

I use the Cinema2 setting for video and I turn the V-DNR to variable and I  utilize the digital audio....it gives a darker picture for the format.  Cinema1 is a nice setting too...I'm guessing these are like home theater settings of sorts.

The T.V. I watch on is a Phillips HD 42 Inch LCD.

Well,

I'm sorry for the time it's taken.  I lost my home and my family and I had to find an apartment.  We've moved in and I'm a going to try and start some capturing.

The DVL-90 has these features for video/ audio,

Full Output Complement:
Gold Plated AC-3 Bit Stream / PCM Optical Output
Gold Plated AC-3 Bit Stream / PCM Coaxial Output
Gold Plated PCM Coaxial Output
Gold Plated Analog Audio Output x 2
AC-3 RF Output for LD
Gold Plated S-VIDEO Output x 2
Gold Plated Composite VIDEO Output x 2

If I were to use the composite (yellow, red, white) connection, can anyone tell me if this machine keeps or rearranges the signal inside which might cause a loss of quality?  I'm not even sure if I'm describing this properly so please go easy on me.  I am trying to decide which connection would be better on this machine as I'm sure there are better ones out there.

I have 2 ways avaialbe for capture right now...

1.  Leadtek WinFast 2000 XP Expert TV Tuner for PC
2.  Dazzle DVC 100 Rev. 1.1 USB for Laptop

I still have this, ATI TV Wonder 650 PCI HD PVR, but I've set it aside for now.

If there is anyone who owns this machine and can offer some capture insight, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Thanks Big!!!!

Shawn

I'm running Window's XP Pro on both machines.

Gents ive been ofered a pionner laserdisc player cld925 with the original trilogy ( plus other discs) for £ 75 , is this a good price ?. Does watching the original trilogy on laserdisc look better than the retail dvd  release ? . I have a40 inch sony and im just wandering what the picture would be like .

  Any ideas .

My Pioneer DVL-90 Elite made in Japan cost me about $135.00 USD, used.  It did come with the original remote and in excellent condition.  I believe I got a manual as well.

My Japan pressing of the SE LD sets cost a bit as well, so in my opinion, you've been offered a really good deal.

:)

I've read this thread an a lot of the technical talk has me at a loss but what it's being modified for does not.

I am excited to see this project come to fruition.  I believe that having the best quality straight transfers of the different versions is pretty important and would allow for future quality projects to stand the test of time for the fans.

I am a fan of the 1997 Special Editions but I don't have the equipment to do the type of transfer that's being suggested here.

My Special Edition LD sets, I have 3 (U.S. Black Box, Japan [PILF-2434], Japan[PILF-2860]), are awesome and my Pioneer DVL 90 made in Japan is a nice machine to enjoy them on.  Of course, my favorite version of the OT is the original.   The only DVD archive I have of the SE is the 5 Star Dual Layer set....which at this point shows it's age for sure.

Thanks for taking the time and effort to update us and your equipment to provide such things for all the fans to enjoy endlessly.

Cheers,

Shawn

If you start with a player that has the digital out-does it still need a demodulator to get the 5.1?

As for this question I have no answer.  My receiver would decode it but I would guess I'd have to run the LD player through it and then from their run it into the capture card.

Just by looking at the stats it would seem that this video has been dumbed down from the original cap.  Kind of a bummer when you think of how cool a movie it is.  Is there a better/fuller version available?

Moth3r,

My apologies......I guess it's been so long that I hadn't checked first.  I hadn't posted the links so people could buy them, I posted so that people could report them.

I thought I was being helpful.

I will pay closer attention to this in the future.

couldnt you just post the sellers name?

That may not be allowed either.  Selling bootlegs of fan made edits and such can give this place a bad name even though it may not be our members selling them.

How can we draw attention to these issues so that they get noticed without posting actual links?  I feel proud when community members coming together to fight such a cause.  It is an honorable cause.

The sellers probably picked it up from the news groups and just decided he was cool enough to make money on something he got for free....and some people paid for it.

The first seller I reported I had actually sent a message to first.  He actually mistook me for the second seller I reported and was very indignant about being reported for doing what he was doing.

Very unfortunate.....................

Here is the second seller saying he bought his stuff from a Star Wars Celebration convention.....

How Many Star Wars Related DVDs do you have- how do you keep up with them?
Time

I have a Phantom Menace CD wallet that I keep stuff in.  It carries the 2004 & 2006 sets along with the Wal-Mart Bonus, The Story of Star Wars.   I've got one DC set with artwork in it's own cases.  A Dr. Gonzo set that is in slim cases and some miscellaneous DC Bonus Feature disc compilations.  I also have a 2 disc set that has all the OT "Making Of's" in it.

I do have the Adywan ANH Revisited and I'm working on getting all of the HDTV sourced sets in AVCHD.

Guess it's time I start sorting these properly......

Yeah, I noticed that the description is misleading in regards to HD.  My main concern was getting at least the mpeg2 with lossless audio instead of just the Dolby 2.0 as an option.

I did a search myself on meaningful specs and was hard pressed to find any mention of them.  I MAY just spring for the Hauppauge HD PVR with a little crimping of my budget so that I have something more high end right out of the gate.

Okay, here is what I chose to buy.........

Dazzle Video Creator Plus HD

My laptop has the requirements to go after the higher quality.  I haven't opened it yet as I wanted some opinion on it's usage for this project.  It does WAV for audio which is awesome and of course it handles the higher quality output formats.  I don't think I need HD or AVCHD for my LD transfers but it's nice to have the option.

I am excited to get started.

:)

Moth3r,

Thanks for your descriptions and help understanding what I'm looking at.  Maybe it's time for a capture as long as what I purchased is enough to do the trick.

My LD allows me to turn off the V-DNR which may be helpful with the AG1980 in the mix.

:)

Thanks Orinoco, most appreciated and detailed.

The DVL-90 is a very nice machine but with digital standards as they are it can fall short even with composite.  I did find that the composite does present a better picture when testing.  Maybe finding an affordable but well created video processor to run in-between the DVL-90 and the Panasonic recorder would be a better solution unless I find a PCI video card that can offer the same quality options as a table top processor.

I will keep searching.  I really want to put my Japanese 1997 SE sets to DVD without any retouches or edits.  Just straight transfers to at least keep them archived for posterity.
