THE STAR WARS SAGA - 1080P AVCHD DVD-9 for PS3 & Blu-Ray players - Episodes 1, 4 & 5 available now

@ ChainsawAsh,

Thanks for the clarification on that.  It can sometimes be difficult to follow other members posts because they may not always realize they are answering a question asked by someone who may not know the differences/specs on these things....with all that goes on here...it's just the nature of the beast I suspect.

Are you saying you have burned it on a blu-ray disc?

If you are asking me, the answer is no.  Referencing the title of this thread, I burned an AVCHD DVD9 and I had no issue with the disc I made.

As long as the disc is burnt properly I don't see any reason why a Blu-Ray disc wouldn't do the same.

If the question is in reference to compatibility, the Samsung BD-P3600 handles the AVCHD file format on a DVD9 like a champ.  It will also do .MKV file format.  This particular Blu-ray machine is quite versatile....I've been a proud owner ever since it arrived at my home.

The only thing I don't like is that you can't make it "all-region" for DVD...though there is an "all-region" version of this machine with it's own nice-sized hard drive, it tends to run a bit more expensive and this one wasn't cheap to begin with.

I'm watching an NTSC (or at least a Region 0) AVCHD version of this right now....

Here are some 70mm film scans--they'll give an idea of what he might have seen.  Some are degraded but most look pretty good.  Note the natural colour scheme and great image detail (and lack of horrid blue-cast).  http://www.jedi1.net/default.aspx

Those pictures made me cry.  THAT is how I remember SW.

I remember those wonderful images.....it is how I remember it as well.  Such a shame.

Are the original prints of each film still out there?

I've read that post so many times in the past.

Collectors seem to have the only prints nowadays. It's been said that prints were shown up until the mid 90's, even 70mm ones. I'm sure those and all the SE prints are locked up in Fox's vaults.

Somewhere...fairly well protected, I have filmstrips that were cut and being sold as separate pieces for collectors....it is from a theater print for one of the SE Trilogy trailers......I got them all for probably about $40.00 total.

I have no way of knowing how exactly to put them to good use....I don't have the equipment or the knowledge to do so.

Media Brand Differences/Specs......
Time

I was wondering if there is any chance of someone starting a sticky thread with regards to the different types of media brands folks use for projects that would center around pros, cons, best price, and what not to even look at when it comes to captures and/or burning?

I realize everyone has personal preferences based on experience but it would be great to know about the specs that are unique to each brand so that people who may not be fluent in these to make a more informed decision based on the knowledge AND experience of the seasoned users here.

My apologies if this has already been discussed...I used the search function and didn't get any hits.

Cheers!!!!

Hey dark_jedi that sounds like a good deal.

But you do realise people are probably going to be sending you packs of DL's now you've said that? You'll probably end up with more than you would know what to do with. LOL :D

well no one has committed yet but 1 guy here, so we will see, it is cool either way, by NO MEANS is anyone at all obligated, these will be out for everyone sooner or later, although I wish I could keep them from some people.

I am willing to commit a 10 pk, just pm me your address.

Cheers

That DTS is not true DTS I am sure, I have that set to and Darth Editous' LD rip of the DD 5.1 sounds way better, and these files will NOT just line right up, there is a lot more to it than you think, believe me, I am working on this now for my set, if this set looks better than the one I am working on, I offered to make NTSC versions for him and sync the DD 5.1 also to it, but have heard no word since.

Well, that certainly is a bummer.  Here I thought I was on to something kind of cool.  Well, at least I have the AC3 files available just in case.....thanks for the heads up.

While doing a little bit of Google this morning it would seem it is possible to extract the DTS audio from the 5 Star DVD's.  Would this be something you'd be interested in to add to the project?  Let me know.

For the other audio files mentioned, just send me a pm.

ATI TV Wonder HD 550 Elite Card
100-703205 PCI OEM

The above card has a 12-bit decoder but I don't know much more about it.  It says it has 2D & 3D Comb Filter, Automatic Gain Control, MPEG-2 Encoding.  Uses ATI's Theater Pro processing from what I can tell.

I really wanted the ATI HD650....I just missed one, got outbid and lost while I was sick....totally sucks because the seller lived close and the card went for under $30.00....I'm so ticked.

LOL

They are from the NTSC discs - PAL LD never had enough room to hold an AC3 track.

Please hang on to those files because I may have mislaid them myself :$ ;)

Most certainly....you were nice enough to make them available to me......it would be the least I could do in return.

:)

Hey Jetrell Fo first of all thanks for the interest, I watched the ROTJ DVD I finished yesterday and WOW it looks good! I can safely say I am pleasantly surprised by how well this release is turning out! Thanks for the offer of the 5.1 AC-3 audio files, I would love to include them. Let me know how can make these available to me and we can go from there. :D

You're welcome...I want to do my own transfer of the Japan SE LD's, the Silver Box, and I'm just trying to soak everything in before I take the plunge.  I loved the Dual Layered 5 Star Editions but they weren't as good as they could have been.

Too bad I don't know how to extract the "DTS" tracks from them, I'd offer those up too.

I am genuinely excited to see your results....the preservation projects are a very cool idea.  Thanks for all that you're doing.

:)

If needed, I have AC3 audio files for the SE from Darth Editous who was kind enough to share them.  I would gladly offer them if they would help.  They are separate, 1 from each LD side so they would have to be put back together...and they might be from the NTSC version so they would probably have to be adjusted...but it would offer a second audio option anyways.

Cheers

JetrellFo's Jedi Archive Special Edition: Japan LD Preservation Project ***Still Learning***
Time

Thanks Aleksbmw, it is appreciated.  I know the S.E. isn't everyone's favorite but archiving different pressings of the Trilogy could have a long term benefit for use in future edits, preservation of a version which has already been replaced by another, different audio options, and an added section of discs to someone's already large collection of Star Wars archive projects.  It's not like George Lucas is going to do it for the fans....but the fans will.

The TPM Japan LD is one I have and want to do as well.

In the end I'm doing it for me but I was hoping to share it with others that share the passion.

The Special Edition wasn't needed.
Time

My opinion is this,

The S.E. should stand on it's own as a "could've been" treat for all the fans.

It should never have been something to base a whole new set of changes on.  If Lucas wanted to "fix" the Trilogy, he should have allowed those who worked on them originally to make use of the new technology and find a way to incorporate those creations back in replacing the original elements that might need fixing/updating....this way, it would have enabled a better transition between the look and feel of the Prequel Trilogy and the Original Trilogy.

Doing this would also have allowed all those people whose hard work got butchered the opportunity to keep the respect that was taken from them and their creations and George Lucas could have kept his credibility as the guy who stood up against bastardizing film history.

The S.E. is a great concept and it's execution was in poor form as others have already stated.  The Original Trilogy is what I grew up on....saw it at the Drive-in even.  It changed the way I looked at Sci-Fi and the evolving world around me.  It is sorely missed.

I am honored to live in an age where the fans have proudly accepted guardianship of something precious that was left for dead by it's own creator.

Cheers to these Star Wars fans, anywhere and everywhere you are, you rock!!!!

JetrellFo's Jedi Archive Special Edition: Japan LD Preservation Project ***Still Learning***

As I'm perusing the board, I'm seeing that my endeavor is going to end up with a "white noise" fate considering all the high profile projects going on so I think I'm just gonna do what I'm gonna do and call it a day.

Mods, feel free to delete this thread at your convenience.

Thanks for allowing me to at least post my proposal.

Cheers to all!!!  Wish me luck.

JetrellFo's Jedi Archive Special Edition: Japan LD Preservation Project ***Still Learning***
Time

I did a search and didn't find anything on this....if I missed something please let me know.

What started my quest....

I was always so geeked over my 5 Star DL of the SE and the Letterbox presentation but I wanted to see a better picture, a better package overall.  I haven't really seen any capture projects specifically done for the Japan SE LD sets.

I think it would make a great preservation project.

My proposal for the project:

Japan SE LD set, PILF-2434, Mono, Stereo, and 2.0 Audio including the Japanese Subs, Extra material included with discs.

Japan SE LD set, PILF-2860, Episode II Sneak Peak, Mono, Stereo, 2.0 Audion including Japanese Subs, Extra Material included with the discs.

Do these discs sets have commentary tracks as well?  I also believe that the 5 Star DL set carries a DTS mix which should be easily transferable for use, no?

For artwork, I'd like to see something that matches the LD sets presentation of each in regards to packaging.

I would be willing to do the straight captures but I KNOW I would need assistance in regards to reconnecting all the video/audio properly, making menus and artwork, incorporating the different audio mixes, and making sure the interviews with GL, the SE "Making of" feature, and the Episode II Sneak Peek feature all make it in as extras for a quality release, either DVD9, AVCHD or both depending on time and resource of course but I'd hate to squander quality.

In regards to audio, Darth Editous helped me acquire the AC3 audio for the SE Trilogy anyways....I have them saved on an external drive.

I could post torrents when things are complete but I'd prefer someone who has good knowledge of  newsgroup usage because they would probably be better accessible to the bulk of fans that dig this stuff.

WHEW, that was a lot to say....I hope I didn't bore you all.  I would happily make sure that any and all involved would get the proper credit.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it..............PMSL

:)

I'm probably asking for a whole big mess aren't I?  Is this something people would see an interest in or should I just stick to creating something for my own personal enjoyment?

Thanks for any considerations, suggestions, polite criticisms, and advice.

Shawn

Did you get a replacement ATi card then, you said above that the original was damaged in transit? These are supposed to be pretty good for capturing.

Thanks for the response Moth3r.

I decided to keep the card in the hopes I could find someone to solder the capacitor back on.  I found a shop and I will pop in today to see what it would cost.  I agree that it's probably the best option from the hardware I have.

UPDATE:  I had the card looked at and the tech said it looks like the card has had home-made repairs done to it and it looked as if it was refurbished somewhere in the chain....he said he wouldn't trust it.  I will keep the accessories it came with and look for a replacement....at least it was only a small monetary loss....it could have been worse.
