Ha! No it was a different one, but what a coincidence.

How much did you sell yours for BTW?

I offered free postage, so deducting that it was about $43 US, which is a few dollars more than what I first paid for it new in '95 (it still had the Tower Records labels on it- it was on sale for $39.99). ;-)

That was certainly a nice price to get.  I got my Collectors Widescreen Edition Black Box recently for $0.99 + a few bucks extra for shipping.  It was used but it pretty fine condition.

I may hook up the Panny and do a basic transfer just for archive purposes...keep the tapes as best they can be anyways.

I should finish reuploading my friend's rips, they were from nearly pristine tapes.  I never got around to it because my bandwidth was always getting eaten, but I'm taking it light for a while having just moved earlier this month, and gotten my connection back about a week ago.

This would be cool.  I don't like snatching anything less than mpeg2 for this stuff as I burn and watch and compression isn't really a friend of mine....LOL

Let us know if you decide to do it.

It would be interesting to know what, if any, differences there are video/audio wise between these sets.....maybe something that can be used elsewhere.

I have 2 sets of the Letterboxed Faces LD's.....I've got one set coming that was made in Japan so I'm looking forward to seeing if there is any quality difference.  I might do a transfer just for home use.

I researched, and yes, there was:

-A normal fullscreen "FACES" VHS set
-A special widescreen "FACES" VHS set
-A widescreen "FACES" laserdisc set

@frink:
Yes that's the "FACES" set.

Actually, there was a Widescreen Collectors Edition (Black Box Set)...which you may be referring to as the "Special Widescreen" set for VHS.

Time

I watched a test disc I made using my Panasonic DMR-EA18 standalone and I have to say, what I saw looked at the least, better than the 5 Star Dual Layered set I have.

I set the Panny to "darker" input while using the Cinema2 and Variable V-DNR on the DVL-90 and the picture is nice (not explosively awesome like the X0 might have been or Aleksbmw will look) and a little soft maybe in flesh-tones but a cleaner picture than the 5 Stars....maybe I will just stick with this capture method and use the AC3 audio I got from Darth Editous as a secondary option to the DD 2.0 @ 256kbps that the Panny does.

What I'll need to learn is how to edit & splice the video together properly so that I can then learn how to sync and add the AC3 audio to the movies so they are able to be chosen from when watching.

This learning experience just might be of use to me, to sorta quote an infamous Sith Lord, in regards to making a basic archive transfer of all the sets I have.

Cheers

Any updates on this or screen shots yet ?, how soon do you think  until you will have finshed capturing the laserdiscs ?

With what work he says he's doing I'd say it would be awhile yet before we see any capture work but since I'm not Aleksbmw, my opinion is just that, opinion.

I guess it comes down to quoting Mr. Incredible on this one..... "we'll get there when we get there".

I'm starting to believe that is the case for most every older film. Don't want to because that would mean more money towards LDs...oh well ;)

I'll get to a Star Trek audio preservation in DTS, but only after the Bond films. That is, if no one else has made these tracks available by then.  I have the Star Trek LDs, so it would be no extra cost or searching for me to do it.  Has anyone ever done a preservation of ST: VI?

I would personally be excited by a Star Trek LD preservation project.

I do have the 25th Anniversary set, the 25th Anniversary special, the 30th Anniversary special (which I think was Japan only), The Motion Picture (Special Longer Version), and all the Next Gen movies up to Insurrection on LD.

Cheers

Okay.  I know my S-Video doesn't do near the picture that the component does but the component could still use some help.

I will keep an eye out for one....it might help me make a better capture.

Component ? only Dvl 919 and Elite Dvl 91 has component output and that is purely for Dvd video not laserdisc. :-) Yes you will need a video processor with s-video output. You can try and get an old Faroudja Ntsc decoder with y/c outputs wich is bnc so you will need to make a new cable or get an adapter.

Sorry, I meant composite.  Would I need just 1 cable or 2?  What kind/type of machine should I consider?

I am no expert, but I think I am right in saying that if you want to take advantage of the comb-filter in the video processor then you would have to use S-Video, if you use composite then your still using the comb-filter in your capture card/TV. I don't know about component.

Okay.  I know my S-Video doesn't do near the picture that the component does but the component could still use some help.

Faroudja VP-250 Video Line Doubler...............would this be a good solution for my DVL-90?

Thanks in advance.....

:)

After looking at the manual, it is a definitive no if your thinking of using it for capture purposes. My video proc has a monitor (s-vhs) output, this does not. (that means i can get the processed signals in y/c) If you have a CRT projector it can touch up the image somewhat, but all in all this is a basic line doubler with a comb filter + basic bandwidth expansion hardware.

I do have BNC adapters for the composite/component, would that help or would I want one with strictly S-video?

Okay,

I've started working....this is preliminary.  Settings for the hardware is as follows:

Elite DVL-90:

Cables: Philips Gold Plated/Shielded Composite (Yellow, Red, White)

Mode: Cinema 2

V-DNR: Standard

Panasonic DMR-EA18 DVD Recorder:

Recording Mode: 2 Hours (XP) for DVD9

Black Level Control:  Input = Lighter/ Output = Lighter

Audio: DD Surround 2.0 (256kbps)

Video: Mpeg 2 (9.15Mbps Average)

The 3rd side of the set is going to be recorded using the Darker setting for Black Level Control Input.....I want to see the difference.

I'm working on posting screen caps...not having a lot of luck.  They'll be up soon.

Adywan capped the ac3 for phantom menace.  But you had to add it to his original phantom menace theatrical cut.

He said it was not as good sounding as the mix for star wars 1997 special edition.

At least from my perspective they sound and look really nice but I'm not running a surround sound environment at the moment so I guess I'm not speaking from a full perspective. From the specs I read, the 97 Japan Edition has a mono track as well.....I could have read it wrong.

The 6.1 for Phantom Menace is supposed to be awesome......

I also realize that my DVL-90 is a combi unit and probably not as diligent as I thought it was in regards to laserdiscs due to it's dual function nature......seems a D704 would probably be superior in performance but I don't have the cash to lunk down unless I sell the DVL-90.

Strange how things work isn't it...............LMAO

In the end, I just want to see straight archives of these discs as they are with any audio options and extras they offer as the 5 Star set doesn't cut it anymore (although I still watch mine) due to the advancements in capture quality.  No edits like additions or subtractions....just a straight clean picture like the GKAR pictures I saw....that would be awesome.

As Jetrell Fo was able to provide me with Darth Editous' DD 5.1 audio captures from the NTSC boxset (Huge Thanks by the way!)

Lee,

Thank you for your words.  DE was kind enough to share those audio files with me a ways back and I purposely kept them in a safe place for when I'm ready to start my own transfer one of these days.  I also figured that someday they'd come in handy here for others who may need to fix stuff or add them to a transfer presentation or archival preservation project.

I still have my "Hope for Laserman" artwork disc that I got for donating....when I find other artwork I try to save it as well for situations just like these.

Glad I could help in some capacity.  I look forward to the completion of this and the chance to enjoy it in my living room when it's ready.

Cheers,

Shawn

I found a nice little capture program that let's me take much better advantage of my capture card's options.

Can you elaborate on this a bit?  I'd like to find an alternate solution as well.

I did find something called ChrisTV that looks promising.

The program I am using now is called iuVCR 4.170n and it looks good, so far.

It's a shareware download with a 30 day free use limit. I like how they give you a lot of options to play with, and the info panel they provide during capture let's you know what's going on with the capture, and also the CPU usage. It seems to be giving me better results then I had with VirtualDub's capture.  My capture of the 1989 LD release went flawless last night. I was able to capture to a uncompressed 720X480 UYVY format with no frame drops, and it smoothly maintained a 29.9 frame rate.

Hope this helps.

FF,

Thanks for the info.  I will check it out.  I want to try and get the best capture from my Pioneer DVL-90, even if it's just for home purposes...I've got a few LD's like the Criterion Editions of Halloween and Close Encounters that I'd like to transfer for archival purposes.

Cheers

Good News everybody!

The (stereo audio) DL DVDs for ESB & ROTJ are finished! I am waiting on some DVD-Rs I ordered to arrive so I can backup the raw captures before I move onto ANH as I need to free up some room on my Hard Drive.

Lee,

Glad to hear things are moving forward smoothly....can't wait to check it out.

The most reliable dual-layer discs are Verbatim DVD+R DL, and single layer Taiyo Yuden DVD+R or DVD-R. You should read this.

Other useful resources are the DVD Media List at videohelp.com and the ImgBurn Support Forum.

Thanks Moth3r,

I actually visited the first link before I posted this because I knew that the JVC Tayo Yuden DL's (Premium Grade) I have from Japan rated pretty high and they are #2 in the top 3 on that site.

Thanks for the other links as well....nice to have some extra info.
