Figures that all the 1995 CAV sets weren't U.S. ones....LOL.

The 1993 Definitive Collection set was CAV. The 1995 "Faces" releases were from the same master.

As for CAV itself, I believe the only discernible difference really is that they are full-featured, meaning they support FF, slo-mo....stuff like that.

True - although CAV has a theoretical signal-to-noise benefit over CLV, in practice I've never seen any noticeable quality difference.

Yeah, I don't know what I was thinking....the DC was CAV....duh.  I'm guessing the picture quality between the U.S. DC and the Coffret Set may be different as due to the region (NTSC vs. PAL).

JetrellFo many thanks for the offer of the LDs, however if I were to use any release based on the '93 master I may as well use the GOUT.

Is the Coffret set based off a different master?

As far as CAV sets go, it is my understand there was the following:

1995 French Coffret (English Audio)
1995 French Individual Releases (French Audio)
1995 German Individual Releases (German Audio)

There may have been a German Box-Set but I could not see a listing on LDDB.com

I don't know if any other LD sets have the footage I need. Unfortunately even if there was a set I don't have the finances to buy another set of LDs for the foreseeable future. :(

Figures that all the 1995 CAV sets weren't U.S. ones....LOL.

As for the footage you need, I was asking because I would think VHS would be noticeable unless the conversion to mpeg2 of the CAV footage would render this moot.  If so, I would think you could substitute CLV footage instead.

I have the Japan made 1995 Faces discs, do we know if they're missing the scenes you are trying to replace?  If so, I'd be happy to lend them to you for this endeavor.

As for CAV itself, I believe the only discernible difference really is that they are full-featured, meaning they support FF, slo-mo....stuff like that.

I did not know that there was a CAV set for these......they must be the only ones as the rest, even the Japan pressed ones, are CLV.

Are there any LD sets that would have the missing footage that I assume you'll be taking from the VHS for transitions?

Tests have shown me I may need to rethink my strategy a bit.  When I use the Cinema2 video option on my LD (it supposed to enhance the blacks) I get a darker picture but due to my inexperience I cannot find a way during processing to even this out and get a better picture without making the end result look too washed out or processed.

I'm going to have to educate myself more on all of this I fear before I can create anything that I would feel good about submitting for all of you as the standards here are all ready rather high with the awesome transfers already out there.

Keep your fingers crossed for me.

Nice to see that you found the "Coffret" set...I know you were searching hard for it.  I hope it didn't end up costing you too much.

Is the picture quality any better on this set than the other region releases?  I know I had read the the Japan pressing of the Faces set wasn't as good as the U.S. release which surprised me greatly considering.

I've put my own project on hold due to some frustration on my part with the entire process.  I'm going back to square one and doing some more tests before beginning again.

Cheers for your efforts on all of this.

Star Wars' creation and original release defined a generation, redefined movie making, redefined the movie going experience, redefined the place Science Fiction had in all of the above (Ridley Scott's Alien did as well).  The Original Star Wars Trilogy in itself was, and still is to those of us who got to experience it and for those of us who have been introduced to it afterward, a historical landmark of genuine proportion.

The actors that gave the story a face, Han shooting first, color timing, musical score, and ground breaking effects process's created specifically for telling this story are to this day still talked about even by other directors who saw the same thing we did.  It moved the Earth.

To make it disappear just because one can.....is like ruining the "Legend of Sleepy Hollow" or the "Loch Ness Monster"..... it ruins the mystery.

The Direct Stream Copy/Full Processing Mode setting does not have a bearing on capturing.

A quick explanation:

 - for simple operations with AVI files - for example splitting a large file into smaller chunks - where the audio and video are not altered, use Direct Stream Copy

- if you want to apply any filters to the video, e.g. noise reduction or colour correction, then you would need to use Full Processing Mode

Thanks Moth3r, that sorts that out.

Info Wanted: Is a 35mm reel scan going to be any good?
Time

I am FAR from being an expert anywhere near this field but I'd have to say that if someone were to have access to some proper resource a project like this COULD be very promising.

My guess would be that they'd essentially be doing what Lucas & Co did when they created the S.E.....essentially making a new master print from the 35mm scan, as things go I could have this entirely wrong too.

At this point I'd figure there would be some processing (via hard core fans, not Lowry) to revive and maintain what most of us oldies got the lucky chance to see on the big screen when it was released.

I realize that this probably doesn't answer your question completely but I wanted to at least take an "ordinary guy" stab at it.

Here is my other dilemma....there isn't really a definitive guide for VirtualDub when it comes to all it's settings and such....two of the first ones I've been searching for is answers regarding Direct Stream Copy and Full Processing Mode for video/audio usage.

Which is best for quality captures and what does each actually do to the audio/video when used?

I know there is an eBook floating around but I've been at a loss in my search for it.

First interview after announcement: (starts around 8:15)

The first topic seems to be launched at this community.  And yes you'll all want to bitch and moan, but realize you've got his attention, now it's time to focus on how do you convince him/others of the importance of the original films as seen back then.

A sign that he most likely appreciates the original's impact is when later in the interview (~23:50) he explains how the coolest thing he was able to show off was the Biggs cutscene footage.

Wow, what an interview.  He puts some of the basics into a simple perspective.  It certainly shows how splinters of the same cause can create  a bigger wall which may be harder to climb.

Thanks for the listen....it was very enlightening.

JetrellFo's Jedi Archive Special Edition: Japan LD Preservation Project ***Still Learning***

At the behest of my own inexperience and the interest of a few members here I have started and completed my first test disc.

I captured "just" the 3 SE trailers and the mini-doc from my U.S. 1997 LD set with the intention of honing my understanding of the process and creating a singular disc with just these features on it.

Virtualdub and TMPGEnc are the programs I'm using to do this with.  I finished the first disc with a basic menu and found that the Cinema2 setting on my LD machine did indeed keep the blacks but the picture is a little dark so I am trying some different settings with TMPGEnc 3XPress to get a better picture for the second test disc.

This foray has shown me that I can get a nice straight capture using the ATI capture card with no extra processing through Virtualdub.  Doing a whole movie will mean a bit more effort but in the end I at least have the ability to do so.

It's a start...........

Here's what I don't get......

I just got done watching Empire of Dreams again and it's obvious that the original "Star Wars" was created during a tumultuous time in history not only here in America but in the world as we knew it then.  There were also SO many challenges when it came to creating the techniques from scratch which were used to help garner the 10 Emmy nominations and the 7 wins....all of them for the production side of the process.  Countless people in film-making were influenced by these changes and the end results....what a WASTE for it to be shunned by the guy who fought so hard to get it made with the obviously restricted budget he was allowed.

WHY undo all of that by exacting what seem by most to be frivolous changes that weren't executed very well with far superior technology than was used to create the original masterpiece?

Oscars, not Emmys. ;)

Thanks for the heads up....it has been corrected.  I was feeling passionate and didn't screen for errors before hitting "post".

I don't think it's just because he could.....there had to be something more personal that wasn't very intelligently connected to keep things in focus.

I love Star Wars......I'm just sad that what made it so accessible and relevant is being wiped from existence just to facilitate and justify "creative license".

I am awaiting a firewire card so that I can use my external drive for capturing in AVI.  I would be willing to do a raw capture of my SE LD sets but I'm going to require some patience and probably some assistance with knowledge of editing/processing of analogue captures so that I can make it as clean as possible without too much processing.

Lee,

Your effort and time are greatly appreciated and I certainly would not expect you to be doing more than you can.  Since I have a U.S. and Japan set of SE LD's the least I can do is try to manage for those who just want a nice quality copy of these anomalous releases.

I am only working part-time right now and that is about to end due to the seasonal nature of the job I work.  I will have some time available to do this capture but it will only happen one movie at a time....as I do not have the resources to do it any quicker.

I will pm you with a time frame for the arrival of the DL discs I promised you.  Money has been the only obstacle at this point.  I am sorry for the wait.

Cheers

We can probably continue this part of the discussion in my thread so as not to clutter Lee's thread.

Sansweet's leaving Lucasfilm....
Time

My take on this.

Mr. Sansweet has done alot for all the SW collectors in the way of turning the hobby in to something far greater.  If, during his tenure, he has indeed dipped in to the dark side.....only he can rectify those mistakes.  Bashing him won't make it happen any sooner nor will it make him any more amicable or empathetic to the fans...he is only human.

I wish him well and hope that his departure can only help strengthen the fans position in the near future when it comes to all that we speculate.

I remember when Ben Burtt started working with Pixar....it was and still is my hope that he made a stand in defense of the OT and stuck with it even though at this point he may not be able or willing to discuss it publicly.

I have always hoped that Dennis Muren would make a stand as well opposing Lucas in defense of all the HARD work that people did to actually make Star Wars and start the journey through the changes to film-making and history.

I am STILL hoping to see this happen in my lifetime.

In reference to the Faces LD's I have a question....is there any noticeable differences in the U.S. pressings and the Japan made for US pressings?

I have a set of each and just wondered if there is anything I'd need to look out for.

I have some of each as well, and I've never noticed a difference.

I've actually recently read some where that the Faces made in Japan for the U.S. weren't as good a transfer as the U.S. ones were...and something about the U.S. ones being harder to find...or some darn business.

A new Star Wars Trilogy on the way?
Time

If the 3D movie experiences would help fund an HD restoration of the ORIGINAL Trilogy, I'd be all for going to see each and every one.

This would be a great marketing tool for GL as well.  Something like.....

For ALL you die hard fans that want the unedited, original, stinking Star Wars Trilogy...the one you ALL have been asking for then here's the deal.....

Gather ALL your hardcore Star Wars fans and attend every 3D release.....

Keep ALL of your ticket stubs as proof of purchase....

After Return of the Jedi finishes playing we'll give you ALL the address to send your ticket stubs to.  Profits from the 3D releases will be used to fund the project and when it's complete each person who sent their ticket stubs in will receive a Blu-ray Release of the Original Star Wars Trilogy for showing their appreciation to the biggest cultural and movie phenomenon ever.

Up for the challenge.....

This would be worth the money spent.

Just an idea anyways..........are you listening Mr. Lucas?

Can you clarify what you mean when you say "capture the audio separately"?

If you are capturing the analogue audio output from your player, you'll find it difficult to sync later if you don't capture the audio and video together. If you're capturing a digital stream however, there should not be any audio drift.

I'd like to go after the digital stream.  Other wise I will be capturing audio/video together.

I'm running some tests using different LD's just to get a feel for VirtualDub.  For now, the best results will come from a capture > AVI output.  Any post-processing will be a completely different story.

I may offer up the raw files if someone wishes to offer an assist or I'll just do the conversion to DVD and call it a day.  Lot's to learn, very little experience, and a love of movies.

I have these on DVD-r from my set of U.S. LD's.  It is only DD 2.0 audio and they probably need to be trimmed to remove the LD screen and have a proper menu done.

Since I have NO experience in this kind of stuff, what I have is how it will stay unless outside forces intervene..............LOL.  I'm having a hard enough time trying to work with VirtualDub or find any thorough tutorials on all aspects of it.
