The only 5.1 mix was done for the 1997 special editions.

The only star wars laserdisc besides the phantom meance in ac3.

Phantom was of course Dolby digital ex though, and not just plain vanilla 5.1.

The original films never had any real quality audio release on home video until the Definitive collection and the PCM tracks on those were really nice.  Though i hated the added sounds on star wars.

Also the digital audio releases were rather late in the game even in japan.  Late eighties, Jedi being the first in Digital on laserdisc i believe.

I think they considered testing digital mixing on empire but it was not a proven thing yet, and the THX system had not been created yet by Tom Holman.

The first digital mix was star wars done in 1985 in stereo for home video, but did not make it to laserdisc in the states until 1989 at the earliest.  japan got it in 85 or 86 in the japan special collection, and also the pan and scan digital release predating the 1992 issue of star wars in the USA.

Thank you for the education...I always love learning about this stuff...it helps sort through all the misinformation.

Cheers

I use BD-RB ALL the time for my BD's and stuff so I know the x264 codec is the shit! really GREAT results.

Darn- If I'd known you could burn these to blu-ray I would have sent you some BD blanks too. ;-)

BD versions would be a nice option to have for those who don't like to compromise their quality preferences.  I know for me anyways, seeing a quality audio/video LD transfer on an actual BD and not AVCHD would be quite cool.

Just saying.....

Thanks dj, for all that you've done and are doing now.

.: The XØ Project - Laserdisc on Steroids :. (SEE FIRST POST FOR UPDATES) (* unfinished project *)
Time

All I've really wanted next to an HD version of the OT was a straight HD (or as best as possible) quality version of the SE itself, cleaned up and color corrected, no additions or subtractions, and no shrinking ratio or missing scenes due to side flips.

I'm always happy to see people with the know-how doing what they do and how they do.

Here's to hoping that this project gets a proper finish and release, either in a raw format or a fully realized one.

Help: looking for... 'Star Trek TOS' - Special Edition First Run on Sci-Fi Channel
Time

As I was perusing youtube today I saw video from the Sci-Fi run of Star Trek: Special Edition with William Shatner hosting all the in-between extra pieces that they did.

My question is this…has anyone recorded all the first run airings of this special series in full and is there a project lined-up any where to share these in their entirety?

It would be very cool to see these in as high quality a format as could be expected from taped airings.

Thanks…

Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)
Time

Kenobius Prime said:

No, of course not.  It is maddening nonetheless, that's all.  :)

Here is an article by Mark Picirilli that incorrectly tries to tie Kershner, his death, and the Blu-rays together, as well as my response.  These guys need to be responsible for their mistakes.

http://www.examiner.com/sci-fi-entertainment-in-philadelphia/with-star-wars-blu-ray-release-philly-native-kershner-deserves-a-nod

The below statement prompted me to email him:

"Kershner, who died on Nov. 27, 2010 at the age of 87 at his home in Los Angeles after a three and a half year battle with lung cancer, surely would have loved seeing his vision come into homes as it was intended to be seen."

My email:

Mark,

The above statement is untrue.

The version that is coming to Blu-ray is unfortunately the 2004 DVD cut, NOT the original 1980, award-winning, Kershner-helmed version.  He questioned the additions and did not think they were necessary, as so many of us also believe.  We are facing a serious crisis in film history at the hands of George Lucas.  Since 1997, he has been oppressing, removing, and destroying prints of the original 1977, 1980, and 1983 versions of the Star Wars Trilogy.

We can really use the help of journalists such as yourself.  If anything, we need the CORRECT version of events to be told and spread.  There are so many people that still to this day DO NOT know what has happened and consider the 1997 and 2004 versions to be the originals.  Even documentaries and books about the originals mistakenly use images from 1997 and 2004 versions.

I urge you to take a look at these sites to show the truth and the real history of these beloved films:

http://www.savestarwars.com/

http://originaltrilogy.com/

For your consideration.

Nicely stated......and good on you for taking the time to say your peace in a fair manner.

:)

GOUT, Automated Theatrical Colouring, and a Reference Guide

I gave my latest encode of g-force's latest script a little color boost, I think his earlier ones had it, I don't know why he decided to remove it, as I think it improves the image.

the values on g-force latest script is:

########## black level/gamma, hue
Levels(10,1.08,255,0,255).Tweak(hue=-3)

and this is what I used:

########## black level/gamma, hue
Levels(10,1.08,255,0,255).Tweak(hue=-4,sat=1.3)

a quite subtle approach as I think the GOUT video cannot handle too much saturation before it starts to bleed, try it out, d_j and see if you like it. I will take a look at yours and see how it compares.

Unfortunately, there isn't that much you can do with the internal tweak function, positive values adjust the hue towards red and negative towards green, that's it.

Okay, here is my question.....I'm not familiar with scripts or how to understand or implement them.  I have captured just the Trailers and the S.E. doco from the U.S. SE LD set....I'd like to try applying something like this above in Avisynth.  Where would I find this script and how would I use it properly?

Thanks

If it helps, the files I have are still in .AVI format.  Too bad something like this couldn't be used to help make the old 5 Star set of the S.E. look nicer....it could use it.

Thank you to all those who have shown an interest in my efforts. :)

If I get some time this weekend I will post some screen captures from SW and ESB. I plan to start work on Jedi next Friday, so hopefully within a few weeks I should have the whole Coffret finished. :D

Lee,

Your hardwork, updates, and finished projects are all appreciated.  This Coffret set will be a great addition to anyone's collection.  I know personally I've been waiting to see what they look like compared to the U.S., U.K., and Japan versions....this might be the best of the bunch and that can only benefit everyone here.

Cheers

Help: looking for... 'How The Grinch Stole Christmas' - ABC Family Cut (Live Action)
Time

<span>ABC Family Cut</span>

This cut has added most of the deleted scenes from the movie. Strangely, some of these deleted scenes never made it onto the DVD releases.

Has anyone recorded this with plans on doing a release?  I saw deleted scenes like the “house light trimming” competition and I really would like to see a full blown version, for posterity if nothing else.

I know there are some who probably don’t like this movie…but I can tell you my daughter loves it and I really think Jim Carrey did an awesome job, even if he had to have some behind-the-scene therapist help him through the make-up issues…LOL

Cheers!!!

I was watching the new Robot Chicken special last night, and thinking Marquand and Kershner haunting George would be a great sketch. ;)

A little obscure, even for RC.  But WOW I would love that!!  Throw in Sebastian Shaw for the win!

Yeah, this would be the "smack in the back of his fat head hat trick" George deserves but has up to this point been able to avoid.  It would also make an awesome sketch....even on Family Guy.....it would totally rule.

I just read this today....guess I need to visit this section more often.

R.I.P. Mr. Kirschner, I never knew you personally but you touched my inner child with Empire, so a part of me goes with you.

P.S.

Haunt George and tell him to stop screwing with these awesome movies...and to respect the originals.  I know I'm not the only one here who would appreciate it.

God's speed to you............

ATTENTION: Dayv needs our help
Time

Dayv,

I know we don't know each other personally but I've been here long enough to at least know your moniker here and what it's associated with.

My mom is a Cancer survivor....as was my Grandmother...there is hope.  Having positive support is just the beginning of a long fruitful future for you and your family.

I don't have much but I'd be more than happy to donate even a little to get things started.  Maybe we could do something along the lines of what was done for Laserman.

Stay strong, keep your children close to you, and stop in here when you need a little confidence boost....I'm sure everyone here will do what they can.

Cheers!!!!

I hadn't seen this posted yet so I'm dropping it here for all those who know Psycho Dayv.

He was diagnosed with Lung Cancer and a friend of his has started a FB to help make people aware.  You can also make a donation if you'd like to help the family during this most difficult time.

Thanks for listening.....I hope this finds it's way to all of Dayv's friends here and everywhere.

Cheers

Guess what just arrived!

That's right the French 1995 Coffret LaserDisc set! The audio is English or as the jacket says 'Version Originale' with French subtitles in the lower black bar. I've not got a lot of time as I need to get ready for work, but having a quick look at the 1st LD of ANH the picture quality looks good, about equal to my '97 SE LDs.

I have to say I am really pleased, this set is in exceptional physical condition, its like the whole thing is brand new!

Now then for some details of this preservation. I reckon it's going to take about 3 weeks to capture all 3 films and 5 capture average them. Then another week to edit the 4 sides and VHS footage where needed together, with a final week for authoring to DVD. So that's 5 weeks in total.

Unfortunately I am very busy this week so I probably wont be able to start until Monday. As always I will keep you all updated as I make progress. :)

I got excited with your search for the Coffret set and I've been hooked on this project since.  Thanks for taking the time and effort.

:)
