Reasons why I like TPM.....
Qui-Gon Jinn
Darth Maul
IMO, it is the most natural looking of the prequels...reminiscent of the OUT.
Design
Audio presentation
These are in no particular order but these things still appeal to me when I watch it.
It would be cool for archival purposes if someone could do something so nice with the NTSC & PAL S.E. (I love Lee's work on the PAL version) ....just as a preservation....a timeline of changes for historical reference if nothing else.
Awesome work being done here, thanks for your efforts.
In my own opinion....had the S.E. been done with more care and more attention to detail there probably wouldn't be so much animosity towards it. There was a great missed opportunity with it's release.
All I ever wanted most was to have the original preserved properly and if they were going to make additions or expansions to give it something special for the anniversary that it would only add and flesh out things crucial to the core of the entire story.
OmegaMattman's work looks quite promising as well.....I wouldn't count his efforts out just yet....
;)
So would it be safe to think that one wanting to do this using various sources (i.e. deleted scenes and such) should probably try use matching audio source quality to keep the output as consistent as possible?

Honestly, I don't know what that means. I don't know much about the sound. The term "1977 Special Edition" is foreign to me. Are you saying the video is Special Edition ('97 or '04?) and the audio is '77?
It’s a bit of each all mixed together makes my stomach growl. LOL
Its basically STAR WARS 1977 with Lucas using the force to trick our weak minds into think the visuals are the same with his ILM team.
Then he forces Skywalker sound to trick us even more.
I keep wondering what happened to the stolen 70mm print of Jedi that grew magic legs and walked out the cinema in the UK or was it USA or was it simultaneous coordinated theft by two parties?
This means that someone still has a stolen "Return of the Jedi" 70mm print if its still in good condition not! The colour would have faded and the mag stripe would no doubt be so fragile if ran though a projector it might break-up or has flaked away, due to poor storage.
Remembering "Return of the Jedi"
http://www.in70mm.com/news/2008/jedi/index.htm
A print of the film (a 70mm print valued at $10,000) was stolen at gunpoint from the GLENWOOD Theatre in Overland Park, Kansas. The CENTRE Theatre in Salt Lake City, Utah experienced some weather-related damage, prompting its 70mm “Jedi” engagement to be relocated for a two-week period to the REGENCY. An engagement at the CONTINENTAL Theatre in Denver, Colorado was terminated following damage from a fire.
I’d say who ever stolen it was STAR WARS nut or some serious pyrite who would shoot someone to get a film print so that he can make money off something that doesn’t belong to him.
WISCONSIN
Milwaukee – UA SOUTHGATE
I just caught this thread and I saw Jedi @ the Southgate venue here in Milwaukee.....the screen was massive and the experience was freeking cool.....Seeing this mention brought back memories....damn, I miss the 70mm 6 channel audio presentation......
Very nice guide, thanks Doctor M. I would also think it's safe to say that when dealing with audio that one should try to have the best audio quality available as a source for doing these things.....I mean, you just can't polish a turd no matter how you paint it.....LOL

If you don't want to go into any AviSynth scripts and stuff, I would suggest makng an mp4 or mkv with a program called ripbot, it is easy to use, has many options and encodes very well with nice quality.
I had some issue with 7z and the Ripbot download. Here is a link for people who might get this issue.
http://forum.videohelp.com/threads/334352-Problems-Installing-RipBot
I will give the conversion a shot and see what I come up with. Any specific requests for the a/v quality for these?

Awesome. It's a pity about the burnt in subs but it beats VHS quality.
All 3 files equal about 10GB's...if you can suggest the best way to convert them with the best quality possible, I'll do it and upload to Demonoid so people can have them....let me know. I also have all 3 separate trailers for the SE as well if they're wanted though I know they are found elsewhere on other fan sets.....
:)
I just checked because I had some time....the Japan SE featurette pieces have the same "voice" outro as the VHS ones do.....
:)
I'll check my Japan LD caps (with the burned in subs of course) of this and see if it has the same "voice" outro....I know they are in AVI so I'll have to find the best way to compress them to mpeg2 for upload.
I'll get back tonight after I check.............
Maybe an easy-to-understand tutorial on using Vegas for this instead would be helpful to people....is there one available here?
I was born in the late 60's.....I grew up with the "reveal". I still appreciate the moment for it's emotion and wouldn't want it changed. The prequels did diminish what had come before and that was and still is a bummer for me. I can't speak for others.
Han shot first no matter what GL says!!!!

Any news on the VHS featurettes?
Aren't the VHS featurettes just the SE doco broken up in to 3 pieces? I know the Japan SE LD's did this and I have them capped separately.

I think the DVDs are good enough to gift to people.
My bro has an HD set and no blu ray player, but i think he will be pretty surprised with your V3.
Still trying to find a company with reliable dual layer media since practically all verbatims are now made in India and are junk. 50% failure rate for some people is not acceptable.
Guess i will have to pay a pirates ransom and get some expensive archive quality dvd9's which match up to the quality of the dvd5's of taiyo yuden.
I suggest just doing a little research. JVC DL's made in Japan worked just as good as the Verbatims people talk about and they are just as reliable for the long term. They don't cost as much as the Verbatims but it doesn't mean they are crap either.
Do a search on eBay....10pk's of these are very affordable. You chose what works best for you. It's the best way to know.
If you are having such high failure rates your drive may need a firmware update or it just doesn't work well with certain discs. I've found that my HP laptop drive kinda sucks when it comes to burning any kind of discs so I use my desktop for that and just use the laptop for read only. As crazy as it sounds it can sometimes be the simplest of things causing errors.

How are you with DVD authoring? I ask because it seems that the best option would be for you to take the introductory stuff you want and add it to the front of a superior transfer (e.g. DJ's V3) so you don't actually have to sit through a VHS quality copy of the film (which gets old fast!)
I recently did just that with the CBS-FOX part (which I can supply if you're interested) - the Maltin interviews are also around on some folks' extras discs (I did my own PAL transfers of these a while back which you're also welcome to if they're any use).
I would be interested, if you could.
I could probably pull that off, if I could get the fresh rips. I've only been able to find rips from Youtube, except for the Maltin interviews which I could pull from the extras disks.
What I'd probably do I think is put the 2 lead-ins on the DVD as extras that you could play on your own before the movie. So I would need:
-CBS Fox collectors previews and CBS Fox logo lead-in. I believe this might have been identical on all three tapes.
-The "heads" lead in with 3 Maltin interviews, the "one last time" trailer, and the THX "audience is now deaf" log.
I still have my "heads" VHS tapes and I can re-look at my brothers CBS Fox versions to see exactly what the lead ins where.
By "Heads" am I correct in guessing you mean "Faces"?

He's not really making fun of him. It was a common sentiment back then (that Empire's sophistication wasn't automatically preferable to Star Wars' simplicity).
I look at it this way.....there is a reason why most people consider Empire over Jedi as their favorite. "Kersch" was ALL over it.

I bet Marcia Lucas' interview for that book won't be making the final cut for the new one.
You know, I always wondered, if the ever changing Special Editions were due in some part to George's desire to push her percentage of credit back to zero.....I mean he is a bit.....errrr.....self-absorbed.
:)
For those who responded, thank you.

J.W. Rinzler via Twitter: "In SR Archives, hit gold mine: original interviews of Richard Marquand and H. Kazanjian--gotta be over 200 pages. Huge for ROTJ book."
Maybe he should have kept it quiet til after the book was published so George couldn't revise these interviews in his own image ...... I hope none of it gets censored.
:)
ADM,
I just wanted to say thank you for such a thorough walk through. It's really nice that you made it accessible and human at the same time. Kudos.
:)
Any updates on this one? I'm a monster movie fan from way back and would love to see this come to fruition.
I hope all is going well with it.
:)
Just a heads up....I answered my own question through some trial and error. I noticed that the framerate for the VHS TPM was 29.9703 (I think that is what it said) as compared to the 29.970 for the LD rip. I only needed 1 frame so I made the correction in Virtualdub, saved the 1 frame, edited it into the beginning of Side B of the LD and what do you know.....my issue was easier to understand.
Thanks for letting me record my progress through this forum. There is a lot more to know than some of the tutorials reveal. Trial and error are paramount when trying to understand your hardware, software, media, and how it all fits together to help you reach your expected goal with the outcome desired.

Hey all.....
I pulled out my AG-1980 Panasonic S-VHS machine because I got anal about what seems like a couple missing frames from my TPM LD transfer...and Virtualdub reported no dropped frames.
I took out my virgin copy of the TPM Widescreen VHS I have and transferred it today. Then I took out my Star Trek DS9 "Behind The Scenes" VHS and my William Shatner's "Star Trek Memories VHS to transfer.
I used the Huffy codec for the transfer and have learned a bit more about trimming un-needed video so I have just the movie.
What am I'm curious about? When it comes to editing VHS, is there anything that I need to look out for, do differently, or anything in general that's different from a Laserdisc transfer? Any and all assistance would be greatly appreciated.
:)
