Sigh. Like -1 said, it has nothing to do with censorship. I'm simply respecting his wishes in not publicly discussing the more open communication his chats are able to have about a subject that, due to the unfortunate reality of things, is in a legally very grey area indeed.
I think some people here have a misplaced sense of entitlement when it comes to these movies, forgetting that for all the unquestionable moral imperative of preservation, no one but LFL actually has any legal right to them whatsoever. Believe me, I wish that were otherwise as much as anyone, but it isn't. So when talking about making a film restoration from the kind of materials that Mike has access to, there is no way most of that can be mentioned openly in a public forum.
Of course, those who would rather sit around making cracks and being needlessly spiteful about it all are welcome to it, but don't expect me to sympathize when the target of such 'humour' is doing amazing and necessary work that is probably the best hope this beloved film ever has of being saved from the madness of its owner.

So there is a chance the original 70mm mixes could be recreated with these?
Maybe....though I'm not sure how the 70MM mixes are constructed compared to the 35MM mixes when it comes to the DTS cinema mix.
Maybe this will help me understand it better...
It seems Matthew Wood did some extensive research and such....time is still money to these people....it could have been done unless they just plan to ride the wave of each previous release so the fans pay for the work....LOL.
In other words...we've been getting ripped off all this time. LMAO
This is the only picture I can see right now, from the images above.... :(
I think this is exciting....hope to see this one turn out well.

No problem. It will be interesting to find out if they are different than the Blu Ray mixes.
I believe - at least with EP4 - that they went back, digitized all of the original recordings and totally redid the entire sound mix for the blu ray.
The SE's were just redone using the 4 track masters.
Strangely, if they had time and money to digitize original recordings of a soundtrack for Bluray you'd think one would have the time and money to get the damn picture right too, before packaging and distributing it.....LOL

If it this turns out to be something of interest, I have a Panasonic AG-1980 which is well-known as one of the very best decks ever made for extracting detail from old VHS tapes. Not that I'm in need of yet another project...
I've got the exact same machine.....I love it too....though I have to say I'm probably still a novice when it comes to using it's full potential.
I think Silverwook(?) has one too. What is interesting is that most really high-end VHS machines were designed to get the absolute most out of VHS recording and playback, and so naturally assumed the user would use the very best tape stock and condition. Not many manufacturers thought about a future market for high-end VHS machines designed for lousy or worn tapes. Now that the format is dead, those few that were designed for that are now the machines most coveted - meaning the Panasonic AG-1980, and also some of the JVC decks (such as the HR-S9911U). I lucked into a mint AG-1980 last year and wow, I couldn't believe the difference. Went back and re-captured all of my old VHS captures with noticeable improvement.
Mine was gently used but really clean when I got it. I have used it to make some VHS back ups but I'm still learning who to use it alongside my PC and my Panasonic DMR-EA18 Recorder.

Considering these are from the 1997 S.E. I would say that at least there aren't the audio changes that came with later versions.....including the .....NOOOooooooooooo...

Don't you understand? It's a double standard. Why was Robert Wise spared the fans outrage merely for being dead? Why didn't fans conduct a seance to yell at him for Paramount's decisions? And why have fans consistently failed to build a time machine to yell at 90s Ridley Scott for not releasing all the various versions he had no control over? Where is it?
The double standard is your own.
Robert Wise was alive and well in 2000---he even contributed a commenatary track to the DVD highlighting why he made the changes he did-----all those peeved off Trekkies obviously failed to make their voices heard ----when the theatrical cut was witheld eh?
I've said this before and I'll say it again.....though some may not like Star Trek OR the Star Trek Bluray set, what Robert Wise DID when he did the directors cut was what George Lucas SHOULD have done with the Star Wars Trilogy S.E.. Robert Wise told his team to redo the effects shots chosen and make them look like they were done in the same time frame as when the movie was first done. And they accomplished just that.
Robert Wise respected Star Trek and ALL those that worked so hard to make the original version of the first film look and feel the way it did. He did not want to hide or deny it....he wanted to honor it and them.

This is not directed to anyone, but out to the universe= I'll all for people trying to best each others versions - just don't piss the other person off enough to make them stop working on theirs, Theres handfuls of abandoned projects when you look back through the threads (and those were ones that got positive feedback and encouragement). More projects, more versions!
I've stopped a few of the things I started because of seeing such things here. I love that we all have an idea of what we'd like to see and it is harder for some than others to affect that change by trying it themselves because they don't have the technical knowledge and/or skills that others have or have access to. Healthy rivalry is certainly conducive to better looking projects but angry posts.....they gotta go. Just saying....
The way I see it is.....every fan community has the opportunity of turning in to "40+ year old soccer mom" duran duran fans that get all bug-eyed and bat-shit crazy when someone sheds a little light on the "fantasy".
It's all part-in-parcel to the passion that is fandom......it being good or bad is an entirely different conversation.
My point being that the final outcome is something we all work towards and look forward to in a community and at the end of the day, the pissing contests are obtrusive and affect no positive progress.

Anyone know if the Laserdiscs suffer from the heavy DVNR that plagues the digital broadcasts?
-G
I hadn't heard that the Digital Broadcasts suffer from DVNR....I've got 3 versions of the S.E. on LD, the U.S. Black Box and 2 Japan Boxes.
I believe I like the Japan ones better.....I'd have to see if there is a difference between those 2 picture wise.
Yeah, it's really unfortunate, because they actually look pretty good otherwise. Report back on your findings!
-G
I shall. Just be forewarned....I'm no technical genius...LOL ...so my explanations will probably very basic but I will let you know which set seems to be the most natural looking of the 3... :)

Isn't it illegal to hook up a Blu Ray player to an analog tv set? ;)
I look back, and I'm amazed I enjoyed letterbox movies on a screen that size for almost two decades!
I'm with you here. I certainly have gained a respect for the old CRT T.V.'s that I didn't have when I had one. I still have a 20 inch Samsung in my daughters room and I will take my custom discs in and watch em and I get such a kick out of how good they can actually still look on them.
Don't get me wrong...I love my 42 inch Widescreen T.V. but I am always pleased to go back in time and dig that 20 inch. As cool as those 5 Star Editions still are they weren't made with LCD in mind....and this is exactly why I'd like to see a clean, straight, no fixes, S.E. Trilogy from Laserdisc.
:)
I don't know of any Laserdisc versions of the Special Edition Trilogy that had anything but paper sleeves for each disc. I know the U.S. Box had black sleeves but there was no artwork printed on those sleeves.
I don't ever remember even seeing a "gold" LD box set for the S.E..
If there ARE any out there they usually end up being played as a surprise for folks and aren't advertised well to keep Jar Jar's prying hands out of the fun.....
I also thought there IS a project going on quietly right now to see if something like this is even possible.
So to answer you straight....at this point, there are none that I'm aware of.
:(

I didn't mean to sound rude, presumptuous or demanding. I'm just desperate.
I say 23.976 as some European blu-rays are 24.00 but that's probably not the case with the UK JP anyway
You have a pm..... :)
I DO think LFL had a unique opportunity with the S.E. and he just failed to follow through. Making it a "one last time" DVD package to celebrate it would have been far better than what we got when the 2004 set arrived.
A note from ElDonante.....
Hey,
borisanddoris sent the 6track my way.
I'm shooting for a mid-late July completion date. It's been really busy at work and in my line of work, when I'm not at work working, I'm working remotely on my own time. I also have a trip at the end of the month and won't have access to my editing suite.
With some luck (or a new job), we'll get this out this summer :P
