Info Wanted: anyone done a TPM and AOTC colour correction?
Time

Alexrd said:

Is anyone doing any TPM and/or AotC Blu-ray colour correction? TPM doesn't need that much work, although I found some shots that need some, like the Jedi Temple exterior:

This is a picture I found from what I believe to be the original version (not the DVD):

This is the Blu-ray version:

And this is my quick attempt at a colour corrected version:

As for AotC, it has that horrid green tint all over the movie and I'm not sure what can be done about it or how.

There has already been some preliminary discussion on this...

http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/Star-Wars-PT-DTS-CD-ROMs-UPDATE-26-SEP-2012/topic/14273/

Preserving the Theatrical versions of these movies would help keep a reference standard for future projects.

Flunk has an .avi for ESB and RotJ.

I never knew that!! Were they "700Mb fit-on-a-CD" quality as was very common in those days or were they a decent size and quality??

When I read this I went searching and I have all 3 of these.  I think I got them when I used to use one of the old file sharing programs...I forget the name off hand.  If I remember correctly all 3 cut off during the end credits.  I could be wrong....I'd have to check.

I was gonna give out free, unlabeled copies at Comic Con yesterday, but then noticed their stance on bootlegs and decided it wasn't worth risking getting booted from the con

I wonder if you could just leave a pile of them somewhere... :)

Would people "steal" something at Comic Con?

I'd bet hanging around the Star Wars fans in the hotel bar would probably have led to some quiet hand outs.....  :)

You want to know what I think might be cool for this?

Finding 5 different people that can each do 1 capture of a specified version of the 1997 SE laserdiscs and then find 1 person willing to take all 5 separate captures to make 1 great reference out of them.

It may sound crazy....I just wanted to think out loud.

:)

What about 1 person that can capture three different PAL 1997 SE laserdisc with different laserdisc players (making for example 3x3 or 3x4 captures) and then take the best out of them?

Highligth: just bought one 1TB hard disk to use only for Star Wars projects...

I'm guessing a PAL & NTSC version would be good for both sides...so people wouldn't have to manipulate things for themselves.

This leads me to another query....when comparing video ONLY (aside from any visual adjustments...characters, colors, shadows, wipes), how does the BD version compare to the 97 LD version in the way of timing audio to them?  I realize PAL would have to be sped up a bit.

What I'd like to see is a minimal amount of adjustment...i.e., cutting out pieces of scenes and what not so that ANY 1997 audio could be muxed with little or no speed/pitch adjustments (aside from the PAL speed up) while keeping the 1997 SE the way it was released.

Any ideas, notes, suggestions, opinions, definitive answers?  :)

I don't see why it should get him banned, Adywan's been openly campaigning for donations for years and no one ever got banned - and that's fine too.

But no, at this point it's about me being busy with my postgraduate program, so a donation wouldn't help speed things up in any significant manner.

This brings back memories of when Rikter was selling copies of different fan LD transfers for money some time back.  At the time, no-one was making complaints, of course things changed.

Donating time and resources to help with projects help everyone....making money on said projects hurts everyone.

I have offered donations of discs and such in the past.  I've offered my time and assistance when acquiring some of the DTS discs we now have available for current and future projects that want to include audio alternatives for preservation.  I could not ask anyone to ever pay for my time and effort in this community.  WITHOUT donated teamwork, none of us would have what we have now.

Lee did the French Coffret set of the SE.  He did 2 versions....I have both.
Thats not 100% correct.

For the 97SE I used the UK PAL 97 SE box set, I did two versions the 1st of which wasn't a public release.

For the non SE I used the French 1995 THX Coffret box set. The only difference between the Coffret box set and the French 1995 THX individual releases used by Moth3r is that the Coffret has English audio and French subtitles throughout in the lower black border, where as the individual releases have French audio and only have French subtitles in the lower black border for Greedo's & Jabba's lines if I recall correctly.

Just thought I would clear this up. :)

Thank you for clearing it up.  I'd rather be aware of what I have then somewhat clueless because I thought differently.....LOL.

I still watch these.....a very special treat for sure.

Cheers

He also, as a side-project, did the French 1995 THX (non-SE) set.

I'd forgotten as there wasn't a torrent made for them.  Lee sent me discs personally of the 2 SE sets he did.  I'd bet the THX sets he did looked nice too.  I'm gonna have to learn the newsgroups...not having some sets only available there blows.  :)

Maybe TPM could be updated to something of higher quality than Xvid?  I'd certainly like to see a theatrical Bluray sized one for the DTS project.  I have a Bluray player for my home but don't have a BD drive for the PC.

I wonder how a Muse capture of it would look?

That DVL-90 looks funny: http://www.laserdiscarchive.co.uk/laserdisc_archive/pioneer/pioneer_elite_dvl-90/pioneer_elite_dvl-90.htm

Wood on the sides? Reminds me of 70's synthesizers and stuff. :)

Anyway, I've read that the HLD-X0 and HLD-X9 are the very best.

Yeah, I believe most of the Elite's had "that" lacquer finish.  I kinda refer to it as the "suped-up" Woody (old car reference) of my video machines because of that.

It's a nice machine but it's dual purpose.  The DVD part sucks ass.  It has a nice set of connections though for me to chose from and I got it at a reasonable price when I bought it....like $135.00 USD and it included the original remote and manual....I couldn't pass that up.

LOL

I'd like to think my Pioneer DVL-90 Elite is a higher end player but there are days I most certainly wonder.  I've done some captures with it but nothing that's been shared openly.

I'd love to see all 3 smear free Technidisc transfers happen or be shared if they are available.  I have msycamore's Technidisc.  It's cool to have as a part of the collection.

Cheers on your new LD's.....I hope you get to enjoy them with a nice player real soon.

CapableMetal, I did take a quick look at Jedi for you and this is what I came up with:

0 = first frame
712 = STAR WARS title card appear

reel changes

25055 = r2
54317 = r3
84511 = r4
112587 = r5
142918 = r6
172032 = r7

G'Kar appears to lack 9 frames in total around the reel change points.

G'Kar:

-1/-1= -2
-1/-1= -2
-0/-0= -0
-1/-1= -2
-1/-0= -1
-1/-1= -2

TB:

-1/-1= -2
-1/-1= -2
-0/-1= -1
-1/-1= -2
-1/-1= -2
-1/-1= -2

TB lack 11 frames around the reel breaks, and a few more on various points.

Are you going to do the ESB & ROTJ for the project as well?  I know the m2v you uploaded is certainly cleaner than my LD caps are and your work with them would probably be the better of the sources to go with.

I am hoping the next move will be to figure out what source video we're going to use for a full release....

Does anyone here work well with LD video?  I have the Japan pressings of the SE in mpeg-2 format @ 9Mbps.  Each side of an LD occupies 1 DVD5 with LPCM 2.0 @ 256kbps audio.

If it would help any I'd gladly send them out to someone for use.

I've downloaded msycamore's video and I'm going to see if I can learn how to synch audio to video.  I'm going to have to learn sooner or later.  Maybe now is a good time.  Thanks to msycamore's hard work in getting this up for us all to work with.

Cheers!!!!
