Preserving DTS LaserDisc tracks, specifically Jurassic Park

Hey Guys and Gals,

I've been MIA and I do apologize.  Kinda struggling in my work life which is pretty much my only life (up to 4h/day traveling to work, up to 14h/day of work, ugh).  I'd really like to hand the 97 DTS project off.  I don't get a winter break like the rest of the country because I provide Internet services for people all around the world and they're working when this country is on break or sleeping, so I do not see a time when I'll be able to get this done.

...unless, of course, someone in the Chicagoland area wants to give an IT guy a job where I can wear jeans and a t-shirt and not have to sit in traffic for hours :P

If anyone is up for the challenge, it's pretty easy to do, just really time consuming.

P.S.
When did the average wage for IT work become less than what I used to make as a teenager working part time at a mall?

Hey El....I am certainly glad that you are at least still with us here.  If I could find work to help my family I'd be in a better spot too....it definitely sucks these days.

As for the project...I am sorry to hear that news as well but I want you to have the time you need to do what it is you need to do...that comes first.  Now, I know I've got somewhat of a tutorial on how you did things.  If you have time to make me up a thorough tutorial (instructions, software used, etc.) at least we might have something to go by if anyone else wants to help out.

CapableMetal did a run @ ANH with video from msycamore....a really nice combination for sure.

Drop me a pm....let me know.  I'll keep my fingers crossed for you....I know how rough things can get.

Cheers!!!!

:)

And don't be too hard on DJ. He was just tired of this project being compared to Harmy's, when it's obviously very different since we're working from the opposite direction. That, and he's working hard on his job, and on this and 3 other projects on his free time.

This community does get a little weird like that sometimes especially with such high profile projects.  I'm glad that  folks like DJ, Ady, and Harmy do what they do because I know I don't have the skills nor am I known well enough to have the wonderful support chains that these folks have gained due to the time and work they've all put in.

My hat is off to everyone and anyone who takes on any project, no matter the size, because every little bit helps.

:)

Hmm.. Interesting about the DTS tracks. I wonder why only the home video and broadcast releases omitted that frame. Incidentally though, I'm not using the DTS tracks. I'm using the rips from the Laserdics, which don't have that frame included. I'll have a think and decide what's best to do.

You're using video/audio rips direct from the laserdiscs, and now that I read it again it looks as if DM is suggesting, with regards to that frame, the way to do it if your going to go with the DTS audio.

I need my head checked.....I'm feeling dizzy....LOL

If I may...

I have bought from TB a couple of times already and all he asked of me is $5 for shipping (we live on different continents btw) and an amount OF MY CHOOSING for donation, which also covers for blank DVDs.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot to mention I had the option not to buy from him if I felt $5 + an amount of my choosing was a ripoff. That's the beauty of living in a free country.

Alright, have a nice day everyone!

What happens in private should stay private.  Please do the OP and yourself a favor and don't talk about stuff like this anymore publicly.

Openly looking for money to recoup money, you've put in to create a project, after the project is finished....you're just asking for a reaction like the one that happened in this thread.

I've had people send me discs....I've sent discs, all free of charge.  If I paid for something...like some of the audio discs I recently acquired to help other projects start & finish....I asked for NO money and shared freely.

The karma helps everyone.

If anyone feels for any reason, that they HAVE to depend on a larger resource to complete a project, they should make it known WHILE the project is going or as it is starting....not after the fact.  I've seen plenty of generosity on this site when people ask for help.  Telling folks that money will be needed to receive a project they're interested in rarely fares well, ever.  Just the facts.

I'm going to jump in and defend TB. I haven't been on the forum for a long time, but he was always (and still is) one of the more prolific archivists on this site.

If I'm not mistaken, TB, I bought both a 2-disc Batman Begins and Dark Knight DVD set from you a few years back on your EBay account, largely because (a) it had a variety of material that I wanted to see that I couldn't find anywhere else, regardless of quality, and (b) I felt the price was ridiculously cheap for the work put into it and the shipping costs.

Fact is, I stayed away from this forum for a long time because of how lax the community became in regards to preservations. Few, if any, were trading on an active basis - I haven't corresponded with Beastly in years, and I know he stopped trading altogether and had a huge collection of rare stuff. I've sent materials off in failed trades, sent potential materials for inclusion that vanished into the ether, and tried to help with projects that went nowhere.

I give TB the benefit of the doubt - I've seen his work, and know him (even if it's just on this forum) well enough to believe he has a genuine interest in helping preserve materials just as much, if not moreso, than most people here.

I personally don't doubt TB's commitment to the preservation projects they're involved with...but there are rules.  If only some have to follow them and others don't then why are we here?  One shouldn't imply openly here that you have to put up cash to get something from them.  It's presumptuous and could be seen as an illegal transaction based on the property involved.

I think everyone whose had even small parts in a project has been a part of a project that ends up in limbo...including myself....what is one supposed to do?  Do we pull out whips and start forcing people to eat dirt unless they comply and finish what they promised they would start or help with?  It's pointless, really.  Real life comes in surprise flashes just as rare and hard to find material do.

You defending this person is commendable.  As a member of this site the rules are designed to help protect everyone.  If you feel there has been misconduct of some sort, then you need to contact one of the mods and/or Jay to start the process of getting things sorted for everyone's benefit, including TB's.

Cheers!!!!

Ep. 2 and 3 are cancelled now

This kinda stinks.  I was hoping for someone to consider doing a color correction/theatrical reconstruction of them at some point so that we may utilize the DTS audio for them (even though ROTS audio is still unable to be accessed due to it's encryption/what ever they did to it).

Just a quick update on my progress, ANH is now finished and I've started on ESB. As with ANH there are quite a few missing frames from the TB release, but the GKar is mostly intact. There is one important issue though. It seems that all releases of the 1997 SE have 1 missing frame. It occurs at frame number 75282 on the 2004 DVD (and the Blu-ray as well, presumably). It's the last frame of the asteroid hitting the bridge of the Star Destroyer and for some reason it's not in any of the 97 releases - TB, GKar or Laserdisc. With that in mind, I'm planning to leave it out since the evidence would suggest it wasn't there in 97.
Disagree.
There's overwhelming evidence to suggest it was there in '97.
That being the DTS soundtrack, which definitely include that frame.
If you omit that frame from your video, then you need to cut ~42ms (period of one frame) from the DTS soundtrack.

Incidentally, we called it 75305 over in the "standards" thread

So, the DTS soundtracks that have been shared ARE actually being used for projects?  I wasn't aware, aside from what CapableMetal had done to sync with msycamore's ANH SE video only upload that any other projects were currently going to make use of them.

Shows how far out of the loop I apparently am at the moment......

I was watching this project quietly, hoping for a cool project to add to the collection.  After reading how this is going down I find myself having to pass on owning this set.  Community & teamwork should go hand in hand, the donation part should be voluntary, not mandatory.

I know I am not alone when it comes to spending some money to have solid resources for projects going on and I am honored to be able to do so and share what I've acquired so others don't have to.  It benefits everyone and my hat is off to all those people who've done the same.

If you're looking for what looks like "mandatory donation"....this site may not be for you.  Due to the circumstances, I will be passing on this collection.

As for the '97 DTS mixes... what would they be mixed to?  I'd certainly be up for the challenge this summer, depending on the destination (Blu-ray, De-Specialized Editions, something else?).  It should take about a week per mix to get them just right.

I'm going to try to have a more detailed instruction set before tomorrow afternoon if anyone thinks it's necessary.  If there is demand, I can also write a script to automate the conversion.

El, I hope everything is okay as we haven't heard from you for awhile.  I am wondering if you are still interested in doing mixes for the SE like you did for Jurassic Park?

The JP mix you and boris brought us is a fantastic piece of teamwork that really shows what this community is capable of.

Here is to hoping that you are still considering this....it would be an awesome addition to all that has been happening.

Cheers!!!!

Info & Service: Audio and/or video captures offered... anyone interested?!?

Maybe TPM could be updated to something of higher quality than Xvid?  I'd certainly like to see a theatrical Bluray sized one for the DTS project.  I have a Bluray player for my home but don't have a BD drive for the PC.

I wonder how a Muse capture of it would look?

I could do the laserdisc capture of TPM Japanese laserdisc using my two own copies, the Pioneer HLD-X9 and another high quality player (like Panasonic LX-HD20 MUSE) and/or another normal quality player (Pioneer CLD-D925 and LD-V4300D); then make some use of AviSynth median or TOOT script to blend the captures.

If there is someone interested, please post your comments here.

Thanks.

I would be interested in seeing this happen when you're ready to give it a go.  Maybe it could be used alongside Ady's Theatrical Reconstruction so the DTS audio could be added to the 5.1 AC3 that he used for it.

Although, I have this question....how does the LD cropping match up with the Bluray?  I know they fixed the issue and it is now the original theatrical cropping.  If they all match we might be able to come up with one really nice video presentation for this.

Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released)

I believe this has been asked here before but I'll ask anyway. I'm trying to burn the remastered version of Harmy's DeSpecialized edition to DVD but I want to include the audio tracks. Not all of them. Mainly the 1977 5.1 mix, the 1977 mono, 1993 mix, commentary etc. I also want to customly make my chapters so it matches the chapters of the original file. So far the only program I've found thats allowing me to do this is ConvertXtoDVD. The DVD came out okay but its a bit boxy in some areas (quite noticeably in the opening Fox/Lucasfilm credits). Any of you know of any good programs that will allow me to customize the DVD the way I want and still come out good on the DVD? I don't own a Blu-Ray player so I can't make a Blu-Ray disc. Thanx.

Well, now that I read this a bit closer it would seem that you're wanting to put the audio "you" want to hear with Harmy's video, while retaining the DVD9 menu's for a DVD5?

I'm not sure you'll be able to just port over that menu without issue.  This is not my forte but I believe you won't be able to use just one "fix all" program for this.  It's going to take a little work and patience.

Info Wanted: anyone done a TPM and AOTC colour correction?

I know adywan did a color correction of the TB version of TPM....you could probably use that as a basis.

Maybe. Although he colour corrected it by removing the pink tint present on the DVD version (pretty much like AotC now has a teal tint). On the other hand, I'll be using unfiltered frames and other pictures as reference. The OS has some of those.

P.S: Do you happen to know what's the best HDTV version of AotC available?

Truth be told....I have no idea if there are HDTV transfers of AOTC or ROTS.  If there are, I haven't seen them, nor would I know how to find them, sorry.
