DTS audio preservation .... UPDATE 07 May 2015 ... Work In Progress

I think what Molly means is that perhaps it's easier to take a default or sort of standard audio track that is already synced to video (so the First Contact Blu-ray's audio) and sync the DTS Cinema rip to that.  Sync it to that, and it'll naturally sync to the video as well.  This is how I did it on Jurassic Park 3D and it worked pretty well and was easy.

As we know, the hard part with this DTS project is cutting and splicing the reels together.  I continue to try and teach myself how to do this.

Sony Sound Forge ...... I've been having a really good time with it.   It works nicely since my files are already decoded and with LFE.  I was afraid at first because I didn't want to screw it up but after yesterday I just jumped in.  I have worked with Adobe Audition and vinyl rips and I became pretty good at it so I figured, why can't I do this.

Now it's on ......

I've used previous versions of Sound Forge - isn't this a simple case of selecting the zero level audio and hitting the delete button?

It could be if I knew exactly what you were talking about.  I am new to Sound Forge.  Since I'm editing multichannel audio I'm sure I have plenty to learn.  Guess it's back to google and the hunt ....... thanks for the info.

DTS audio preservation .... UPDATE 07 May 2015 ... Work In Progress
Time

Okay, update ....... Up to this point, I have to say I've been a bit frustrated because aside from a set of discs folks are using for an ongoing project there hasn't been any other movement on this aside from me obtaining soundtracks and decoding them ...... it was leaving me feel a bit helpless and bummed.

Fast forward to yesterday .... I received a pm on another site from a close acquaintance who has helped me through the DTS mess.  He offered a few suggestions and it inspired me to do what work I know I could.  I opened up Sony Sound Forge and started work on the audio for Star Trek: First Contact.  This is my first real forray into Sound Forge but I'll be darned if I'm going to let this project drop by the wayside .... projects will need audio to work with and people have requested audio they'd like to see be available for use so I'm going to do it.

Now, synching the audio to video is NOT my forte.  I will have to learn to do it.  Please be patient with me.  As long as I can keep the audio as close as I can to fluent without copying, pasting, time shifting and such I will have made it far easier for others to smooth out any minor details.

For everyone who has shown me support, it is greatly appreciated.  I will need it to keep moving forward to finally get some of these rolled out.  Keep bringing your suggestions and any tips you might want to share.  It helps us ALL.

Sincerely,

Shawn

BIG HUGE THANKS to borisanddoris, ElDonante, Silverwook, CapableMetal, and others who have inspired, worked on, and helped in some way to spark folks interest on this matter. WITHOUT them we'd still be wondering and waiting for such preservations. You ALL rock in my book. :)

I have this set .....

Jurassic Park (1993) [41830] CAV

Thank for the offer, Jetrell, but I have this set too, along with the "normal" CLV version... I will not use them, until someone think that its soundtrack is better or different than the UK PAL, or of my experimental conversion (from DTS to AC3 5.1 640kbps)...

If everything will go allright, it will be released next week!

I love the CAV set.  Maybe I'll do my own custom transfer for home with the DTS audio I have.  I am not very capable with AviSynth but I do use VirtualDub and maybe I can make a nice little presentation for my home viewing pleasure ..... having a version in letterbox is always nice.

Thanks for considering my offer.  It is appreciated.

Ya know, I've offered my TPM film trailer up numerous times for someone to scan and absolutely no-one showed the slightest interest in doing it so it's going back in storage until I can maybe get it done myself...

I think only a handful of people on the board have the equipment to do something like that.  I have an ep 3 trailer that I've thought about scanning frame by frame on my flatbed to see what kind of quality I can achieve (it does 4800dpi resolution) but it would be a huge and long project, I just haven't been motivated to take it on.

We have good people working on big projects at the moment.  I'm totally cool with that.  It's just hard when you offer stuff up that could help and it just goes un-noticed due to the bigger projects going on.  I'm still sad my cinema DTS audio project effort has all but stalled half-way through.  I've gotten support from a small group and that is far better than none but I'd really like to get the audio put together completely for everyone to use and I'm not able to do that due to my limited knowledge of multichannel audio editing & synching to video.

I'm glad people are obviously making use of what's been provided by other members for the bigger projects, maybe when those projects are finished I can get some tutorial advice so I can go on alone.  The main thing is, the small groups do help the larger cause and it's good for all of us.

:)

P.S.

Sorry for the rant and sorry to emanswfan.  I hope everyone understands it's not personal towards anyone, just venting, thanks for letting me blow some steam.

The prequels are fine as a stand alone trilogy of their own but my guess is only 35mm scans are going to do them the justice they deserve.

I might have tracked down the superbit audio, but do we need it when we have the cinema track? surely that is definitive?

I'd personally like to have the DTS audio for all 3 of the Japan R6's.  It would be nice for the archive and for making a custom disc or mkv with the different DTS tracks .... especially the full bitrate as compared to the half bitrate ..... to switch between for giggles.

you may want to track down the R6 DTS DVD of JP as well if your comparing

That was an exclusive DTS track to that region that was 1536kpbs  and apparently a different mix. I had it for a while and it sounded superb. very high bitrate as well whilst reading up on it

http://www.buyoyo.com/buyoyo/eng/ProductDisplay.do?prrfnbr=71560&prtype=all

costs $5 plus shipping

I have the White Box set and they are 755kbps for DTS.  It would be nice if someone on the forum had the R6 Japan DTS set as the audio for JP 1 & 2 had exclusive mixes for the region.  I also believe the video bitrate topped out @ 9mbps which was the higher than the Superbit set.

For anyone interested, I do happen to have the Coherent Acoustics DTS for the "fixed" JP DTS DVD.  A kind member here helped me acquire the DVD and I wouldn't have a problem giving back.  Maybe at least to have another audio option.  It is 755kbps, not 1.5kbps.

I'm actually thinking about synching the audio to my Japan JP DVD and see how it works out.

I'm capturing right now the third side of the DTS laserdisc; I wonder if its soundtrack is the same of the theatrical DTS CDs or not...

I read somewhere (IIRC widescreenreview) that the AC3 LD soundtrack was a mere conversion from the DTS LD... anyone could confirm that?

It is possible that it was derived from the theater DTS audio but it might be mixed a little different due to home and theater venues having different auditory needs when it comes to presentation.

Just got the disc at work. I have a BD ROM with me and just ripped it to a MKV. There is definitely a regular DTS 5.1 soundtrack. I will check to see what it calls that track when I get home to where my PS3 is:

I do have borisanddoris' DTS track from myspleen with me and will try to sync it. Problem from the start is that the 3D JP transfer has the new Universal logo so at minimum there is an offset needed.

I wonder if they ported over and remixed the old DTS DVD audio.  It was only half bandwidth as well.

A perspective on the 3D from a member of the AVS forum .....

My review of JP3D:

The Good Things first: The 3D was wonderful! On a par with Titanic 3D!
Easily one of the best conversion jobs ever.
Didn't find any evidence of massive DNR, the picture looked clean with lots of detail.
The colours were rich and slightly warm, very film-like. But didn't look too much like a 90s movie to me, as it was so clean, and that's a good thing!
Sounded good too. An additional aspect of the soundtrack I will discuss below. There were quite a few pop out moments in addition to a very realistic depth perspective.
It was pure Nostalgia for me.

Now the things that bothered me:
1.The aspect ratio has been tampered with once again. The image has been zoom-boxed, cutting on all four sides, quite a lot. As a result Dinos heads get cut off slightly, eyes at the top edge of the screen get chopped off. The cropping was distracting(the ratio was still 1.85:1). The Imax 3D trailer was framed at 1.85:1, and there were even comparisons made with the Bluray(which was cropped), the 3D version was even more cropped than the Bluray. The framing of the IMAX3D trailer is exactly how it looked in the Laserdisc and VHS as well, but the cinema version has been cropped further than the 1.85:1 trailer cut. It makes me worry about the Bluray 3D.

2. The VFX models didn't lend themselves well to 3D. The lack of detail was clearly apparent and in contrast with the rest of the surroundings, which were 35mm footages.

Surprising things that I noticed: Lot more detail, individual objects, even the minutest ones are now clearly noticeable.
I also noticed the Pace of the film, it was like a roadrunner, one thing after another, barely ever slowing down.
I mean I've seen the movie countless times and know every single frame by heart, but never has its pace felt so relentless, my goodness( and no there was no speedup issues).
New additions:
There were definitely quite a few additions very clearly noticeable-
1. When the thunder strikes and the lawyer crouches, asking the doctors to head back to their cars, they have added a lightning flash visually, which was never there. And It makes the impact of the scene much better!
There are minor additional sounds added to the soundtrack(not the music track), extra velociraptor sounds when the deadly duo enter the kitchen, one of which clearly had a high-pitched cat sound.

2. The animatronic shots were the most impressive in 3D. However the final shot, when the T-Rex rears up to its full height in the Visitors center lobby and roars, knocked the earlier poor vfx 3D shots' balls out of the park. That last shot when the Rex Roars and the Banners fall was ABSOLUTELY EPIC, as it was in 2D when it originally came out. It had GREAT depth with the Tail swinging out of the screen+ it was highly detailed. I don't know how they could get the last CG shot with the T-Rex to look so detailed, imagined it to be lackluster like the other CG shots, the colour scheme of the Rex also looked slightly different, more colourful that is.
I'm catching it again on Sunday!
These didn't at all damage the experience for me, though the cat sound was a bit annoying and unrealistic(Well Gary Rydstrom succumbed to a little temptation it seems).

Bear in mind that the extremely grainy image on the Japanese Ep1 LD means the compression needs a much better bit-budget for transparent results compared with the average film.

I for one would line up for a "superbit" version of your capture.

Here is the MediaInfo on one disc of my capture.  Maybe there would be a way to get a 3rd capture and do a median of them?  I am ONLY familiar with VirtualDub.  I am not an AVIsynth user.  I'd love to see a way to clean up the video for a better presentation.

Can you give me an idea of where you edit the LD sides together?  I have my TPM LD discs spread out over 3 DVD5's .... I recorded each through my standalone Panasonic DMR-EA18 DVD Recorder.

I am going to stitch them together now that you've done this and see how it looks although it will be like a 12GB mpeg2 file ..... LOL.

Any chance you did a dual layered version?  That would be nice.

Cheers again, it looks nice.

Well this is an MKV so it's not even really a single layer :). I have no plans really of doing any dvd releases though. I believe the quality of this encode should allow for a very nice dual layer if someone were to choose that route, however, I'm no expert as evidenced in my multiple ridiculous postings in other threads lol.

I figured with the smaller size of the .mkv that maybe it was compressed to make it an easier upload, that's all.

I certainly won't bite the hand that feeds, ya know.
