THX 1138 "preservations" + the 'THX 1138 Italian Cut' project (Released)

And I don't think its strange to also try to learn more about the mysterious history of the film. It's real, of course! And from 1971! But some accounts suggest there may or may not have been yet other versions.

This I totally get.

Maybe it's me but it seems there are some folks who aren't happy with any answer given, even though it's not the fault of the folks providing what info there is, but more a problem with the history of the myth/urban legend of this film and it's journey.

Personally, I would think people would just be plain happy to have this at all.  It's a REAL find that fans can finally enjoy.  Questioning validity and such really isn't any way to thank the guy that got the prints that made this happen.

poita, thanks for all you do.  I know you have a full plate and you have all my patience for things to come, like Star Trek III.  People like you make these communities the place to be when it comes to bringing the past back to life for future generations to enjoy.

Cheers to you my friend.

:)

"The audience was literally moved to tears", that right there says a hell of alot about the importance of film preservation. Thanks poita

These are exciting times, i just hope we don't see the end of them.

Grown men actually cried during the screening. It is a beautiful thing, we have forgotten how cinema can move the soul I think.

I am SO excited for everyone when it comes to this and I am honored to be even a small part of some of the projects that will eventually come from the donations made by a fair number of folks.

That said, poita, thank you from one film lover to another, you are paving the way for things to come and these projects could not get a better over-seer.

If there are any differences on the audio tracks on each VHS copy, then it might certainly be interesting to include them.

I still have a VHS copy of the Special Longer Version in German and I'd like to offer its audio track if you're interested. It was released around 1997 and was digitally remastered. On the case it says: Hi-Fi Stereo Dolby Surround Mono Compatible.

I don't see 2 US VHS releases have any audio differences.  I was referring to using a median of say 3 like video captures for footage needed to complete a higher res restoration for better detail and such.

Having a German video might help the picture quality from a median of four if done right.

Is the German version fullscreen or wide?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the actual release using the Director's Edition deleted scenes combined with a down-scaled HDTV airing of the theatrical? I mean that alone is significantly better than anything you could get with VHS or Laserdisc.

My intention was ONLY to suggest that we might be able to up the detail with a median from a few different captures of the same material, like what Andrea does with LD's.  The one that is out now isn't as hi-res as it could be.

JEDIT:

Edit and Preservation by FanFiltration

Most of the footage for this version is imported from the Director's Cut DVD set (but this is a major re-ordering and edit of that footage). Much of the footage that was missing from that set has been imported from a letterbox High Definition broadcast version. The original audio track was taken from the long out-of-print laser of the 1983 Special Longer Version.

Video / Audio Sources:

A) Widescreen High-Definition T.V. Broadcast of the 1979 Theatrical Version.

B) Director's Cut DVD {Including bonus out-takes and trims}

C) Laserdisc of 1983 Special Longer Version {Audio Only}

In the end, it was just a suggestion, not a dig at FF's creation.

Hi JF.

I'm certainly interested in seeing these. If you can manage an upload to the 'Spleen I would grab them in a heartbeat. You can never have too much 'Zilla.

Thanks.

That is kinda what I was figuring as well.  It's nice to see them almost as you saw them on TV when we were young.  It is a real treat, even with some of the great DVD/Bluray releases that have happened.

I may just leave them "as is" and upload them to the spleen.  This way people can do what they want with them.  I'm enjoying the ones I have.  I've got Godzilla 2000 on VHS too, Fullscreen I think, I should do that one too.

How to capture HDCP-encrypted HDMI sources (Vudu, Netflix, Directv, Virgin Media, etc.)

Depending on how fast VideoLAN (VLC media player) can capture ..

How to capture/record desktop video using VLC media player
http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-capturerecord-desktop-video-using-VLC-medi/

.. (that demonstration is at a "blazing" 10fps), you may require more dedicated software.

Videogame players tend to use the known and staunch FRAPS http://www.fraps.com/ to grab fast action gaming at high resolution/frame-rates, for game without built-in recording. However, there are similar programs jockeying for that dominant position. Like any software solution, how well it works will depend on the power of your system to keep up.

Always download from the original site for "clean" copies, and otherwise check user reviews to confirm their authors are not including unwanted ad-ware / spy-ware.

Good advice Spaced.  I tried VLC and it wasn't great for quality but maybe after reading the tut you provided the link for I can get a better idea on how to work it.

So... 2001.

What's the deal with that fan-edit that come out a while back, but got taken down?

I am unsure.  Maybe fanedit.org would be the place to look for answers.

Maybe I'm dragging things out, however if I am then Antcu is also. Please be fair.

Your reply, before you edited it, where you asked Antcu to stop, was better because it was fair. Sorry you changed it.

Ridiculing and chiding with silly sarcasm or ironic idiosyncrasies, and especially when the post only includes silly sarcasm or ironic idiosyncrasies, can (pretty much only) be interpreted as making fun.

I'm still waiting for you to quote the post of mine that you claim is entirely devoid of everything except silly sarcasm or ironic idiosyncrasies.

I'm also still waiting for some quotes of instances of me ridiculing or chiding you.

@skoal,

Silverwook has replied.  Instead of dragging this out maybe you should stop and thank him as well.  It is what you wanted, another person to help clear things up?

I asked him to consider cutting his losses, yes.  Ant can handle himself here so I adjusted my post.  I posted Silverwooks response twice for you and you didn't even bat a lash at it.

No-one here likes e-penis, except for maybe Mr. Frink's mom, but I digress.

We are all here for the same thing.  Did you ever stop and think that maybe no-one was responding to your requests because just maybe you were too insistent?  Patience is a valuable resource around here.  Use it.  It will serve you far better in your search than constantly questioning or tossing out the same requests over and over again in a short amount of time.

I think you should slow down a little.  Let things breath so that you'll be happier when you get good results instead of wanting to slap someone with it because it took too long for you to get, ya know.

Take care of yourself too .... we don't need members exploding like the bird does when Fiona sings in the woods(Shrek).

As I've said many, many, moons ago, I have both early 2001 DVD's. I know they are different because the Warner one has a non animated menu screen, although they kept the sound effects the MGM disc menu had.

Unfortunately, my house is still a mess. When I find them, I will listen for the missing Hal line. Given time, I might even be able to rip the audio track and get them out there for a detailed analysis. Between being a mod, and my so called life, this hasn't been on the top of my to do list.

I would personally love to see a preservation with as many older audio mixes as will fit. I've got the Criterion, MGM, and the early Japanese letterboxed Lasediscs too. (The JP doesn't have the intermission or intro/exit music though.)

I will do my very best to dig out my old DVD's this weekend. Now, everyone please take a stress pill? ;)

Thanks Silverwook, for responding to the request.  I hope it will reveal some good results for all interested.
