Revenge of the Sith (The New Canon Cut) [ON HOLD INDEFINITELY]

^Thank you! I’ll work on those. I’m really glad you actually gave feedback!

Of course! I actually had the notes saved for a day or two; I just wasn’t sure if I wanted to post them, since they were mostly technical complaints.

For the miswire jokes thing, I remember the mindset I was in when cutting that, and I think it’s because I didn’t want Anakin and Obi Wan to have any hint of animosity in the opening. I wasn’t sure if someone was going to read that scene as Anakin being serious or sarcastic - I didn’t want anyone to think Anakin took something like that so personally. And I also don’t know if there’s enough in the film that characterizes Anakin’s humor as doing bits. It’s a little more innocuous and traditionally friendly for Anakin just to go straight to being defensive of R2, rather than snark on the offensive. I might put it back after thinking about it more.

Regarding the “no loose wires” scene, I personally never interpreted it as hostile. I hadn’t even considered that it could possibly be interpreted as hostile. It always seemed, to me, lighthearted banter. I can definitely see where you’re coming from with not wanting any room for animosity, but I just thought it was too funny to pass up.

In the opera, I think cutting straight to “is it possible to learn this power” is too abrupt, and makes the Darth Plagueis story much less of a story. It’s weird to have Palpatine build up this tragedy and then it end up just being “There was a guy who could save people from death. The end.” And if you just meant to switch out “he could actually…?” with it, you get rid of “Not from a Jedi”, which is the beat I feel like the scene should end on. Besides, it’s not a huge thing to have Anakin ask as if to make sure he heard something right.

I think I agree with you about the Opera scene. I just kinda threw something out there because I prefer the scene trimmed a bit, but that’s really a matter of personal taste.

Unrelated: do you know what resolution the source video you’re editing is?

I’m a big fan of this edit. A lot of the changes work for me. I took notes of the problems I had while watching, but I understand that this is unfinished so it’s likely the technical problems will be ironed out before release.

[7:45] Added dialogue is WAY too quiet.

[9:41] I would have preferred that you kept the whole “no loose wire jokes” conversation; with part of it cut out, the conversation feels too abrupt. I also thought it was one of the funniest parts of a mostly unfunny movie, so it’s a shame that it’s missing, IMO.

[20:40 and 21:04] Added dialogue is a bit too quiet.

[26:49] I could tell that “forgive me” was cut short, I’m not sure what you could do to remedy that, though.

[27:34 and 44:20] Not really a criticism of the edit, but Hal9000 has some upscaled deleted scenes on MySpleen, if you have an account; if not, feel free to PM me for them.

In the Darth Plagueis scene, I personally would’ve cut it like so;

“He could even keep the ones he cared about from dying.”

“Is it possible to learn this power?”

Anakin asking if Plagueis could actually save people from death seems like a dumb question to me, seeing as that’s what Palpatine just said.

[43:24] Music change is too sudden. Maybe crossfading the two audio tracks would help?

I love how everyone makes up their own stories and reasons as to why the ANH saber fight doesn’t look like shit - when it does, and the only reason is because they were limited to the extent they had to do slow movements close to eachother to not destroy the props and/or the glowing effect.

People try to justify it because the answer you’re giving just isn’t satisfying. Out-of-universe answers in general aren’t satisfying.

How out of touch do you have to be? I suppose if this was gonna happen, it would happen in Bumfucknowhere, Wisconsin (I’m sure Ashwaubenon is a lovely place); but even still, Darth Vader is iconic. It would almost take effort not to know who he is.

TPM Anakin, AotC Anakin, RotS Anakin

This is almost a thread idea, but it will work here…

Which of these is the worst Anakin?

That’s a tough call. I’m tempted to say TPM Anakin but then I think about how Christensen is an older actor and should have done a better job. I mean, whose fault is it that Little Annie was such a lame character? Certainly not the kid, he was like nine years old or something …then again, can Christensen even be blamed? He’s not an inherently bad actor (I don’t think, I’m not sure) so blame would fall on the writers, directors and whoever cast him for that particular role.

"[Christensen] said, ‘I don’t want to be this whiny kid.’ I said, ‘Well you are. You gotta be a whiny teenager.’ He said, ‘I want to be Darth Vader.’ I said, ‘You gotta be a petulant young Jedi. You’re not going to be the guy you thought you’d be when you signed your contract.’

What you had in mind is better than what I put in there, I’ll use your idea.

Squeezing in the clip wouldn’t work, though. I’m using Harmy as a base and I believe you used the 2004 DVD as a base.

I actually used DarthRush’ RotJ Remastered, and he says that he used Despecialized for about 95% of the edit. So it should work, unless the 5% that isn’t Despecialized just happens to be the clips I used, or he did some color correction of his own.

Very well done. I really only put up with the rest of the movie to see Luke fight Vader, so this edit’s a blessing. I only have two problems, and one of them it seems you’re aware of. It may technically break the philosophy of this edit, but perhaps inserting a very small clip of the space battle, between the two scenes where Luke jumps to the window, would work.

“I’m afraid the deflector shield will be quite operational when your friends arrive.”

Cut to battle outside, just enough to make it clear that things are not going well and that the deflector shields are still up.

Cut back to the throneroom.

“As you can see, my young apprentice, your friends have failed…”

I like it. I’ll make a second version with that.

Edit: Not sure exactly what to put there. Additionally I don’t wanna focus too much on Han, Leia, etc, because they havent’ been introduced in this movie, but there’s a lot of that. I just kinda added a few bits of Ewoks.

This is what I had in mind

My other minor complaint is that when Luke first grabs his saber, it seems like he goes directly for Vader. I tried something similar to this edit once, it didn’t pan out, but I do remember that I had Luke go for the Emperor’s neck with Vader blocking, just as it happens in the unedited movie. Directly following that was a backwards clip of the same clip. So it played out like this; Luke tried to kill the Emperor, Vader blocks, they lock blades for a bit, then they lift them away to begin fighting.

I tried remaking it to help illustrate my idea.

I tried doing that originally but couldn’t get it to look right. I’ll redo it like that, though.

Edit: If you don’t mind me doing that.

Sure, go right ahead. If it’s easier, you can just squeeze my clip in there rather than editing yours to match mine.

I like Bernie. I’ve said so more than once. But I did think his ideas (like free higher education) were pie-in-the-sky while Hillary’s were more realistic.

Don’t you think they’re good goals to work towards, though?

Sorry if it’s explained earlier, but what is the point of this change? Just rewatched this part in version 1 of Hal’s restructured TFA (which I’m assuming is unchanged from the original) and it’s not really any different from what you have him saying here in your edit? And if that’s as good as you can get it, sorry to say but I think this needs to be on your cutting room floor 😉

.Val

It was redone so that it was structured like a mind-trick, so the implication would be that Rey learned the mind-trick from Kylo trying it on her.
