Since I can’t get the flipping Youtube video system working and I’m sure you know what I’m talking about that is site is messed up!

Anyway while sifting though some of the links on this thread and finding that some no longer exist or where the Keck is the play button as there’s a video on page 1 posted by (darkhelmet) so where’s the press to play, thanks.

The Empire Leicester Square London A THX JBL Installation
Time
This summertime I visited the Empire hoping to catch DIE HARD 4.0 in THX but regrettably I missed it by just one day and therefore had to watch Transformers in THX that, was totally loud and mind blowing at the same time.

Here are a dozen or so pictures that I took on Thursday 26th 2007.

It was only two years ago that all the Star Wars films played at the Empire Leicester square as part of the Star Wars celebration day back in (2005) pity I didn’t have enough money to buy a (galactic ticket) not that it would make any difference the seats where sold out at (hyper space speeds) within 30 minutes I believe?

Did you have anything planned for it? It might contain useful material for a 70mm mix re-creation (you and Molly should talk, if you haven't already ).

Do you have the japanese laserdisc of TPM? Apparently the 5.1 mix on that disc is more powerful and has better dynamics than the mix that was on the DVD (you could speculate that it was the true theatrical mix, downsampled to 384kbps, rather than the "remixed for the home" effort that was used on the DVD). Therefore, the optimum TPM fan-authored DVD - for those so inclined - would contain HD2DVD downconverted video (because the original video on the NTSC DVDs suffered horrendous edge-enhancement) combined with the AC-3 track sourced from the laserdisc. Just an idea...

http://theswca.com/relics/prerelease/dolby.jpg

I like this thread and it needs simplified pictures, edited in at the beginning, to show how to do this in the simplest of ways.

Star Wars was realised in what is called a (road show) realise 70mm six-track Dolby stereo with baby boom track and monaural surrounds or (format 42). The front channels where all discrete full spectrum sound along with the surrounds.

The format of the 70mm print helped the projectionist to select the correct setting on the Dolby CP-100 processor at the time and in later years around early 1980’s the Dolby CP-200 was introduced and is still in common use in the best sound cinemas to this very day.

So you can ticker around with the mix on the (1997) version of Star Wars special edition and besides there’s no way of telling which parts of the split-stereo surrounds that where created for the (1997) Dolby digital or 5.1 mix there’s no reference marks to tell us what the (original monaural surrounds) sounded like back in (1977).

Only Ben Burtt and the re-recoding mixers know that, if they can remember that far back?

One other thing you have to remember with 70mm Dolby six-track is, that some of the channels may not be carrying sound information, for example the surrounds may not always be active as they are on the 35mm optical Dolby stereo because of the nature of the (matrix decoding circuitry) generates cross-talk between adjacent channels so the surrounds on the 70mm Dolby print may have different musical sound notes! As to those playing at the front including sound effects.

Actually, speaking of the coloring mishap on the first Lawrence DVD, I shouldn't applaud the new Searchers restoration too much since the coloring on that is equally off.

No it’s a pure and simple fault in the authoring of the DVD of Lawrence of Arabia, lack of supervision of the transfer, LOL or ether someone feel asleep though it as it is a long film, but that’s no excuse for taken consumers for mugs.

To their credit though they redeemed themselves somewhat by correcting it. The Superbit LOA is beautiful--its just a shame you have to own the previous version if you want all the extras.

I’ve heard as much, I only own one (Superbit) region 2 DVD Gattaca.

If you do, then piracy is afoot. You can contact OCP and pay him 10 bucks for it, reason for him getting kicked off the forums I believe. Or I suppose someone here can send you a copy. I know I'd just ask for a self addressed and stamped envelope and burn you a copy for free.

No thanks, I guess it was just the thought I’ll keep hold of my (Star Wars laserdisc and DVD copies) of the films. These copies here just look great and tempting, or I can play around with the contrast brightness and colour levels on the TV monitor, instead to obtain a good playback picture.

Thanks.

Difference in quality of laserdisc players

I'm wondering if my player has something wrong with the motor that it makes such a loud noise then... That's good to know if I got a better player that would at least be sorted.

My old SONY TV monitor had issues with laserdiscs, they always looked rough and noisy in the image. And here’s an odd thing I have this Toshiba that I picked up for free and thou it gives a slightly better image like that (rainbow colour) effect that you often get, I’m sure there’s a (comb filter) built into the Toshiba.

But here’s that thing? The image on the composite signal looks as if the tuning of the signal is marginal off a bit, and since I don’t know which internal part to look at on the Toshiba I’m a little confused, or eluded?

I have a Pioneer CLD-1750 that is in current use and Pioneer CLD-2950 that needs a small part to attach to the top of the spindle motor where the centre hole of the disc is supported a piece of rubber or rubber ring that sticks to the spindle.

The Pioneer CLD-1750 can a bit noisy due to start up and the acceleration of the discs speed tends to be a little off putting that is until the film starts and as the laser is tracking thou the disc the speed is gradually slowing down and getting quieter as well, I never gave it much thought to take an average SPL db read to see how loud the player is.

Some of the screen capture shots show high contrast in the last few on the bottom where as well as which one do you chose from some are cropped on the sides and a little cropping off on the top and bottom part of the frame. Is someone deliberately trying to drive us all stir crazy. There where a few images that I liked.

Lawrence of Arabia and The Searchers-- you know you want Blu-Ray!

Actually, Lawrence of Arabia fans will be keeping a close eye on the HD version when it comes out next year--what with the infamous color disaster on DVD. Hopefully this will be the first LOA package of proper extras and the proper image.

I’m willing to bet that Lawrence of Arabia as the same sound fault on the Bluray disc that is the same as the DVD version, its where Lawrence is walking on the train carriage.

The music skips a (few beats) on the English language track while the German language track sounds normal, except the dialogue of course.

I compared the fault with a VHS Hi-Fi widescreen tape and the music was of course perfect no jumps no skipping, now then.

Now if it is intact on the so called perfect format, I’d like to hear that down a high street in some home cinema demo room.

I first saw Lawrence of Arabia on TV many, many years ago and then saw it at the Odeon Marble Arch at London back in 1988 in 70mm six-track Dolby stereo SR.

Fantastic!

Info Wanted: 1984 VHS Hi-Fi Sound – A better source for the ’77 stereo mix?
Time
More than that VHS Hi-Fi tape can be damaged very easy, thou that’s not the point.

High frequency sounds tend to buzz sometimes and low frequency sounds tend to buzz as well depending on the scene and how quite background sounds are. I remember having a copy of Apocalypse Now on VHS Hi-Fi and the jungle scene where the tiger jumps out! Just before that where the Willard stops, and looks straight ahead, there’s this annoying buzzing on the lows.

So no VHS Hi-Fi isn’t a good source Laserdisc is its more pure sounding. I have a very early PAL laserdisc of Star Wars that was pressed back in (1982) which as been transferred to DVD-RW.

There is a bit of noise on it due to the analogue fm stereo track its Dolby stereo encoded and thou I can use the (CX noise reduction) on the laserdisc player to reduce the noise level it wasn’t a bad transfer.

But i found that you only need to raise the gamma very slightly and then use the input white level to brighten without bringing out too much noise. Here's an comparison example. Here you can see that i have managed to brighten up the image without bringing out too much noise in the darker areas and is almost as bright as OCP's. i boosted the saturation on my image just to match OCP's just for this example. The original of mine has had the saturation dropped by about 20%

I find it is always best to do some quick renders first onto a dvd-rw and check on a few tv's to see if any problems have occured with brightening & colour correction. The problem with the 2004 DVD's is that the detail has been lost in the black areas and no amount of brightening will fix this. Its all just finding a good balance between brightness & minimal image noise.

“This is madness”. Okay where can I buy one of these versions from? I have the THX laserdisc CAV version which I transferred straight over to DVD-RW and its not as good looking as the OCP version.

I still haven’t transferred Return of the Jedi the laserdisc version that came out around early 1990’s before the THX versions. This one has the original soundtrack that I remember from the 1983 realise that was on 35mm Dolby stereo, not sure about the 70mm six-track version, thou I bet that would be a must to have on DVD.

These are actual size. As you can see, they are about twice the width of a piece of 35mm film. This is from my collection of badly faded 70mm SW film strips. These cels are from a 1977 print - the Kodak codes next to the sprockets confirm it. The ones sold individually by Willitts Designs look much better, of course (I posted a bunch yesterday in the 'GOUT film grain' thread). I attemped to scan these cels with a flatbed scanner and a lightbox, but ended up with a lot of wierd lines/artifacts. BTW, I can't get the link in the first post to work anymore (?)

Convert me to Bluray or HD-DVD no way, I’d wait and see what the outcome is I’m, far too old and wiser, to get mixed up in this format war, please be my guest I’m not going to miss anything special and I couldn’t careless if Star Wars on Bluray or HD-DVD!

When one of the formats is resting in a shallow grave at the back of your garden and that its confirmed it will not rise ever again, and after there’s a respectful, disc category to chose from, then I’ll consider it.

Don't forget that it isn't about the films or fans any more, it's all about the money.

"Merchandising. Merchandising. Where the real money from the movie is made" - The wise & powerful Yoghurt.

With a seventh Dolby re-mix no doubt! I want the original Star Wars with "baby boom" track and monaural surround yes the version that was realised in the cinemas the (70mm road show) print. Not some cheap money scam to fool the Star Wars consumers, I’m feed up with being milked!

Buy Bluray with (extreme caution) if it’s the same Dolby film mix as found on the 2004 DVD editions, I would take it back and get your money back and lets see if that pisses Lucas off, if millions of copies where returned!

Perfect format my foot! If Lucas can prove to us and realise the original and original means original, I guess original doesn’t exist in Lucas (vocabulary) because he can’t even spell the word "original" with those crap Star Wars 2006 editions, the tight git.

Taking the same versions that where used for the THX CAV laserdiscs who, does he think he’s kidding.

The Empire Leicester Square London A THX JBL Installation
Time
At the Empire Leicester square in 70mm

Seeing Star Trek II the Wrath of Khan at London’s Empire Leicester square cinema screen # 1 back on warm Sunday October 8th 1989 which was part of an all day Star Trek event which started at 11am in the morning with a packed out Empire was totally out of this world for sound presentation via the Dolby stereo six-track and the Lucasfilm THX crossover system which was accompanied by a huge JBL loudspeaker array delivering up close to 16KW of brut sound power of high fidelity had to be heard!

The first show stared off with 35mm Dolby stereo optical print of Star Trek the Motion Picture which for an optical track sounded great all the richness of the soundtracks sound elements where faithful reproduced without colourization of the sound it fitted the screen size perfectly.

The 70mm six-track Dolby stereo experience!

Star Trek II presented in 70mm went just that bit further in terms of sound the opening titles was deep from the moment the James Horner score started over a Paramount Pictures logo, it gradually builds up in layers where its presence started to vibrate the chair with certain parts of frequency range pressing on me!

One moment in the film that I thought was quite impressive was when Khan, lifted Pavel Chekov off the floor whoa, this was a quite ambient scene and where all that low came from I still haven’t the first clue thou I’m sure most of it is in the centre channel mix after playing the same scene on region 2 DVD. Now I have seen this many times projected in the cinema via several 35mm optical Dolby prints but never like this, yes this is how it should sound and feel with lots of drama that makes the audience gasp!

http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w118/Brainstorm3417/StarTrek2KahnliftsChekov.jpg

Its not easy to play a scene like this and then later where the U.S.S. Enterprise is being attacked by a vengefully disgruntled Khan why who could blame him, suddenly you reach for the volume as it seems too bright sounding in the high frequencies as the phasers fire from the fronts then pan to surrounds within milliseconds its all too much for the home.

Getting all to sound right in the home varies from home to home the type of loudspeakers amplifiers equalizers room acoustics how one might customized the sound system to have a unique difference over most its about how far one is willing to take it and make its conviction sound good without muddying up the sound.
