Agreed. My father and I have watched it almost since the beginning. I would say they stopped making consistently good episodes about 5 seasons back. Now, it's more bad than good. However, it's difficult for me at least, to imagine Sunday nights without it.

Anakin's fall - did it really need three films or could it have been done in one?

Given how bad the PT has SUCKED so far, GL needs the third film to try to redeem himself.

Anyone ever seen the episode of the Simpsons from like a year and 1/2 ago, where the family goes to see a SW rip off at the movies, and its like 3 hours of the Imperial Senate proceedings? The kids go on a crusade to force the GL type producer to make better movies. He takes them on a tour of his ranch and shows him the studio. There's one guy in there wearing a VR type getup manipulating digital equipment. Then the GL character hops on a taun-taun and takes off.

Heh. Typically, we americans are taught more about the history of other nations rather than current events. I'm considered one of the more knowlegeable people in my school but I can probably count the world leaders I know of by fingers.

Still, I think it's relative; you all are told what is going on in America because whatever the US does affects you. The same can't always be said of the other nations. If America's actions didn't directly affect the rest of the world, then I doubt you'd know as much about them yourselves.

I just don't think it should be prerequisite that I, as a citizen of the American northeast should know what's going on in Siberia right now. Does this mean I'm stupid or brainwashed? No, it means I don't care.

I look at it more as a major weakness in the American educational system than anything else. I graduated high school in 1990, and I can say after looking at some of the kids in my family that things have changed for the worst...big time. My wife is also a teacher, and can tell you that all the BS they have to put up with, from idiot uncaring parents to advertising, running, and collecting for fund raisers being brought in by outside vendors. And keep a kid back for not learning? Feh...not possible. Pass them to the next grade whether they know the work or not. Not only that, but take a walk to the local mall. I know you're still in school, but after talking with you in the past I think you're pretty intelligent: I'm sure you can see how scary it is. Teenagers, in GENERAL (not you) are idiots. When I was in the mall during my lunch hour I was shocked by what I saw: 12-13 year old girls who look like tramps, 8-9 year olds with cell phones, 15-16 year old single mothers with two kids. Points to breakdowns at home and at school, unfortunately.

Expanding on what I said above about teens being idiots, again please don't take it the wrong way. There are exceptions. You are one of them, I was one of them. There were a few of us in my class that would actually read our own books during lunch, or would compete for good grades on our tests. Then there were the rest.

What exactly are the people of the US supposed to do for the rest of the world? How much of the blood of our citizens has been spilled over the past century liberating or protecting other countries? How much of our food has gone to feeding the hungry? How much money has our country shelled out bailing out failed economies, or rebuilding tsunami devasted countries a world away? When will the people of the world solve their own problems instead of looking for the US to bail them out? Do the corrupt/failed governments of the world bare any responsibility for the terrible state their countries are in? Who gives anyone the right to demand that we give more? If you sincerely believe that what I've said above is brainwashing, you need help man.

Did, in any moment, said you have to DO something? You don't, and belive me, we don't want you to. What we'd like is that you'd know about the world a little bit better. To KNOW, not to DO.

I apologize if I jumped, however when you start talking about brainwashing it's difficult not to make the leap. Yes, there's an entire world out there that begs to be explored and learned about. The same could be said standing on any point on Earth, not just the US.

Returning to the original topic, Yoda: What's the word on the seats Labour lost? Do you think if will force Blair out early?

Comics Fans
Time
Not sure if this has been covered before, so please forgive me if it has.

I used to collect back in the mid-late 80's and early 90's. Mostly Batman, Transformers, Detective Comics, etc; Never read Marvel back then because I thought Marvel was for losers (my opinion on this has changed radically). I remember walking down to my local convenience store and picking up a copy of Batman #400, with an introduction by Stephen King. That was my prize until my brother got me a copy of Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller, at which point, to quote Mr. Miller, "I fell in". Some of my favorite memories were taking rides with my dad to the next city over to the comic shops there (there were none in my hometown). As I advanced through high school I began to stop collecting, and made maybe one or two stops at the local comic shop through the entire decade. Around 2001 I stopped at one down the street from where I worked at the time and fell back in again. I take my kids with me when I go. Now my tastes know no bounds, and I'm dying to catch up on things I missed. For example, I just read the first issue of Neil Gaiman's Sandman (the collected first volume), and am thirsty for the entire series.

I'm just wondering what your favorite current title(s) is/are?
What was your favorite in the past?
Who is your favorite author?
Favorite artist?

My answers in order:

1. Anything by J. Michael Straczynski
2. The Marvel Transformers series (this was my lone exception)
3. Miller, baby.
4. I'd have to say the person who does Straczynski's Amazing Spiderman book, I think it's Romita, not sure.

Reminder: Free Comic Book Day on Saturday, May 7th. Take a friend!!

It was very dark and was the defining work of the time. Pretty much single handedly revived the Batman franchise at DC. He followed it up with Batman: Year One which was a 4 issue mini-series that "reset" the clock and retold the origin story. Again, awesome work that aided in the revitalization. Not as violent as you may think. Miller's strength lies (IMO) in using dialogue to create character.

And... if all goes well... the new 'Batman Begins' film should be very close to the tone of 'Batman: Year One'. (fingers crossed) I'm looking forward to it at least.

And Chaltab- if you ever are willing to take a chance on it, look for the hardcover book 'The Complete Frank Miller Batman'. Here is a

description..

IMHO its a great read and you can still find it around generally at a decent price.

What did you think of DK II?

I think it was different, which counts for a lot these days with me. We're too often being force-fed (no pun intended) the latest car chase/bang-bang/idiot teen comedy every other week. You could make the case that SC is quite violent, but it was done well (IMO).

Plus he is not a Frank Miller fan, that has to account for some distate towards the movie.

What did you think of DK II? I know many Miller fans were quite dissatisfied with it... I've never read Sin City, but it looks like the local B&N is carrying it now, so I think I'll catch up. My love affair with Miller began with the original Dark Knight and Bats Year One. Ahhh, the day.

Miller wrote Batman? Gosh I'd hate to see how he butchered his character.

Batman: Now you die. *Throws a batarang decapitating the Joker. Blood gushes out and pools up on the ground. Then Ace the Bathound eats Joker's body.

In between all the movie watching, there could be bathrooms, and places to enjoy other trilogies like books and Video games. Rachet and Clank comes to mind.

Actually, I was thinking about this recently. I realize many of us are from pretty far away, but has there ever been any thoughts of having a get together? Maybe an OTCon, or something? Perhaps that would be a good way to generate some press for our cause? Perhaps we could have two or three smaller ones in different locations and webcast them to eachother...I know it's probably just pie in the sky, but hey, never know.

One good sign about ROTS (no spoilers, please...lol)

As far as I can remember, GL didn't allow any advance screenings of either of the other PT films, but there has already been a press screening of ROTS and there will be advance shows across the country on May 12th (and no I don't have tickets but I know that radio stations and the like will be giving them away).

The rule of big movies tends to be, at least here in the States, that if the movie is known already to be a stinker there will be NO advance screenings so that the critics will have no time to flame it in advance. An early show could actually be pretty ballsy on George's part and hopefully shows a confidence in the finished product.

The thing I guess I'm most looking forward to in this one is that from everything I've seen so far its actually starting to *feel* like Star Wars. Yeah, it'll be glossy and video game-like in appearence, but there is what looks to be tons of nods to the OT. I don't know if anyone else saw the E3 footage that was recently posted on a.b.starwars but... wow! This is not to say my faith hasn't already been kicked before by the PT... but I'm actually getting vaguely excited. Dammit.

Yes, I too am beginning to get excited, even though I told myself I wouldn't. I've been down this road too many times at this point. GL and company are so good at trailer editing that anything they put out gets the Pavlov reaction, at least with me. I remember when I saw the first trailer for Phantom Menace, with the "Binary Sunset" music playing, then the "Every journey has a beginning....every saga a first step", then blamo! The trumpet music of the main theme comes on, and the hair on the back of my neck was way up. Talk about Pavlovian. We'll see, but I'm anticipating better things from this one than the previous two. Hopefully GL can gain a measure of redemption by going out with a bang.

I am voting for Liberal Democrats, generally regarded as the 3rd choice party, but in my opinion they are the onlt real alternative because the other 2 parties are so similar. It's the same old story of smiling, lying politicians. Blair will win and I am ok with that. It could be worse.

Tarantino-esque? Not at all! It's the opposite of what Tarantino does, it's a light hearted fun movie. It's not really a kung fu film per se, and the special effects are somewhat cheap substitutes for real Kung Fu (as I've discussed in the other thread), but it's an OK film. Not as good as Stephen Chow's previous film, Shaolin Soccer, but...

I should clarify: What I meant by Tarantino-esque was the visual style, especially in the beginning during the dance routine. Also, did you all see Kill Bill? Much of the fighting, especially with the axes was reminiscient of it; at least for me.

There are still inconsistencies overall, ie: God help me I'm actually goint to cite PM, but Qui-Gonn's whole basis for trying to get approval to train Annakin is that he senses how strong the force is in him. Also, in ANH, when Vader and Luke are racing down the trench in the battle of Yavin, he says "The force is strong within this one", which at least implies that he's been able to sense a presence in the force in other people in the past.

Good point, however in ANH we hear Vader with the "I sense something, a presence I've not felt since...." speech, and then later reveals his concerns about Obi-Wan to Tarkin. I know I'm knit-picking, but this is irritating me.
